Nail on the head...it's all a necessary part of the show. Bob needed to be Bob. If he held back - something would be wrong. I loved how Bobby played w/ his vocals....showing off, being goofy, etc....love it. My favorite would be when he'd be singing a Dylan song and break into that "Dylan-esque" tone....hahaaaaa.....(i.e., last line of 1st verse of Maggie's Farm 6/7/91). ~ Pappy http://www.theCAUSEjams.com "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right." - Robert Hunter

Point well taken birdsong. I think the most apropos word to describe Bobby's singing [on occasion] would be maudlin. And you are right about straight, that wasn't a good word to use on my part.

Forgetting Lyrics and "The Weir Factor"
It is a partly sad but true part of what happened to Jerry, but Derek hit the year on the nose. 1978 is When opiates became a prevalent part of Garcia's life and from what I have heard, they don't improve your ability to remember a 250 song catalog perfectly 70-80 nights a year. Add on his Garcia Band repertoire, his stuff with Reconstruction and so on, and the man had a lot of shit to remember. The fact is the junk slowed him down in that category and he blew verses and mumbled through a lot of tunes on some nights. What the dope did to the way he played his guitar is a totally different story for a different time. That was simply mind blowing and worth a mumbled verse or two from Morning Dew if you ask me. I am not condoning the use of that shit by any means, but Jerry was all about the experimenting cross between drugs and musical performance. That is why we are here kids. Some drugs are just not good for you and dope was that one for Jerry. Now Weir on the other hand......I guess I can justify my oncoming point with the preface that a lot the members of the band and crew (particularly Jerry and Phil, and Healy....who lost his job because of it) would give Weir a heavy dose of shit for his antics on stage and his general personality. It was a nessecary part of the band chemestry. In my limited but condensed years of seeing the Dead live I caught many an eye roll, snicker, or general look of annoyance and even disgust by playing members of the band during say an Estimated Prophet where at the same time the 60% of the crowd would mimic his "Na Na HAH'S! and laughing. It was part of the "show". Bobby in my mind was (not so much anymore) a feigner and a crooner. He was the rock "Star" of band and it sometimes to some people it was annoying, but a part of the evolution of the Dead. Pappy has it right....who cares? I see your point dstache, we all love the occasional really tight show, but when did the Dead ever play it straight? I don't think the word straight was even in their vocabulary. This music was played by the Dead for us to take it or leave it. They didn't give a hoot what happened to it a nanosecond after it left their bodies. This is why I love this music as it REEKS of freedom from head to toe. I am really on my soap box tonight: "The opinions expressed in this post are not the necessarily opinions of anyone that should really be expressing them, just a single deadhead that likes to talk shit". "I had a hard run, runnin' from your window."

Of course, they all forgot lyrics. Hardly a show is played from '78 onward where Jerry didn't forget some lyric. I didn't mean to imply that Bobby was an idiot for forgetting lyrics. My question was regarding the fact that I can't tell whether he is mumbling in that obnoxious rock star way he feigns every once in a while because (a) he forgot the lyrics or (b) he was just being obnoxious. The answer may be (c), both. Sometimes Bobby intentionally sang in a way that rubs me the wrong way. Just play it straight, Bob.

    Lyric blowing?
They ALL blew lyrics...A LOT....that's what happens when you have a repertoire over 250 songs and you play a different show every time out. It just happens. And it's completely forgiven, in my book. Prime examples: Jerry in Hartford 10/14/83 - blows lyrics in "Alabama Getaway" and SMOKES the rest of the song on guitar. Bobby in Landover 3/16/90 - flubs the first line of Queen Jane (and corrects himself, following it up with 'There we go!')....but the song is played BEAUTIFULLY - one of the best renditions I've ever heard (in my top 3 shows attended). Brent in Hamilton just a few days later 3/22/90 - the 20 year awaited breakout of "Hey Jude" - the whole song - and he forgets over half of the lyrics. Didn't matter - historical moment of epic proportions, IMO. Who cares? Looking forward to this run BIG TIME. ~ Pappy http://www.theCAUSEjams.com "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right." - Robert Hunter

I'm gonna add 4/30/88 to this vine. I grade the sound quality of the first set as an A- but the second set is an A. Highlights include an always welcome show opening Let the Good Times Roll, a mid-set Pocky Way, a set-closing Let It Grow, a second set opening Shakedown, a solid all around second set, and the surprising encore of China > Rider. I believe the recording is a MTX.

For those that are interested, yes, Rooster contains a mini Brent rap, making the song palatable. "little red rooster, you ain't shit to me," haha, great stuff. If anyone knows if Bobby forgot the lyrics during the first verse of Queen Jane or was just being an idiot, let me know.
