the casino was quite the scene.............
Dead Heads in tie dyes were running around the casino floor. Some were sitting in circles checking out the all the lights and sounds. They blended in well with the casino scene. Periodically, a woman on the loudspeaker would ask for different band members to pick up a white courtesy telephone.I remember I won on the blackjack table the hard way. I had four or five cards, included two aces, in my hand. The rest of the cards were small numbers. This confused me. I didn't realize they added up to twenty-one. I asked the dealer for another hit. He quickly gave me another card. A face card. I won again. Twice in the same hand. The dealer retired the deck after that. I still dont know how I did it.

    TABLE NO. 23 - ANYONE?
This was the one and only Vegas show where they exited the crowd from the show into the casino. A Vegas casino had never seen thousands of trippin' dead heads. I arrived with $2 in my pocket and played for 36 hours straight at Table No. 23....they had to peel me off the table to go to the show!! I was the first one back at #23 and was there for several more days!!! And the wallpaper in the rooms.....just lent itself to the event!!

This One Was a Major Trip
I remember driving out from LA with my girlfriend and my buddy and his girlfriend, in her piece of crap Pinto. It was extra special because the night before we got $5 tickets to see the Lakers play the Jazz in Vegas (back when the Jazz used to play 10 "home" games a year in Vegas) and watched Kareem Abdul Jabaar break the all-time NBA scoring record with a 17 ft sky hook from the baseline. I drank $1 Heinekins all night, and started again the next day prior to the Dead Show. My girlfriend was straight as an arrow, but the rest of us dosed way too hard. I was freaking out walking through the casino to get to the venue and almost turned around about 5 times but my buddy kept me moving in the right direction. I remember that Jerry looked like he had too much too fast that night himself, and he had to be helped off stage during Saint of Circumstance. The rest of the band jammed in his placed, and they finally wheeled back a wobbly Jerry and propped him up in front of the mic, and he caught a 2nd wind. Man, what a great experience, those were the days.My friggin' girlfriend was so hot, what she was doing with a spaced out fry boy like me I'll never quite figure out! Man was she hot!!

I was a ski bum living in Aspen. Drove to Vegas in my '69 VW Squareback, my first car. I would in a day and a half donate it to the state of Nevada 17 miles from Vegas. Scored tix in the lot. 6th row, very nice. Afterwards saw this tripped out dead head stumble blindly into a room of beehive hairdo women playing bingo. He went AAAH when he looked at them, their hands shot to their mouths, Aaah. Hysterical. Wandered Vegas for the night. Hitched out the next day looking forever for this mystical BLUE SCHOOL BUS headed to Boulder. Never saw it. Got my tapes and pillow and bag from my car, Bertha and spent two days walking and hitching to CO. When we hit 1st major city learned that a Cheryl Bonaventura (RIP) had been kidnapped from a parking lot the prior weekend and murdered. NO ONE was giving rides in that town that week. Long tales cannot be shared here, but a trip that was.

I believe that this was the low point music wise of all of my shows. Jerry was absent in all but body. I remember the entire night as disjointed. I felt that something ugly was occurring to the band and the crowd. Not a diamond but a lump of evil coal. The exit thru the casino was very trippy though. I remember a lot of the crowd seeming almost glad to be released.
