Sirius Satellite Radio And Grateful Dead To Create Grateful Dead Radio Channel

    NEW YORK-May 22, 2007

SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) and the legendary Grateful Dead announced today a new radio channel dedicated to the music of Grateful Dead and its band members.

Grateful Dead Radio will be heard exclusively on SIRIUS and feature music spanning the band's long and storied career, live performances from the band's own archives, bootleg performances from fans, previously unreleased recordings, and even special shows hosted by members of the band. Grateful Dead Radio is expected to launch on SIRIUS this summer.

"We have fans who've driven hundreds of miles to see us," said Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. "Now you can save on greenhouse gas emissions with SIRIUS without driving a mile."

"Grateful Dead's importance in the history of rock n' roll is undeniable. In the 60s they helped to define a generation with their music and their creativity, in the 70s they virtually pioneered the concept of 'jam bands,' and in the 80s and 90s they were among the preeminent live touring bands. They have continued to amass a significant and extremely loyal fan base to this very day," said Scott Greenstein, President, Entertainment and Sports, SIRIUS. "This unique musical relationship makes SIRIUS the premier home for Dead Heads across North America and Grateful Dead Radio will bring the band's music into the future of audio entertainment."

"Listen up, and listen good," said Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir.

Grateful Dead started a musical revolution in the psychedelic landscape of the 60s. The band, well known for constantly touring, kept the hippy spirit alive during the following decades, creating a devoted community of fans. Grateful Dead's numerous studio recordings were often collected from material that they originally played in concert.

Grateful Dead Radio joins a line up 24-hour, commercial-free music channels dedicated entirely to some of the world's greatest recording artists such as Elvis Radio, channel 13, the world's only official, all-Elvis Presley radio channel broadcasting live from Graceland in Memphis. SIRIUS has previously dedicated channels exclusively to the music of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, The Rolling Stones, David Gilmour and Pink Floyd, George Strait, and most recently The Who. SIRIUS is also the exclusive radio home of Shade 45, channel 45, the uncut hip-hop channel co-created with Eminem, "Little Steven" Van Zandt's Underground Garage, channel 25, Jimmy Buffett's Radio Margaritaville, channel 31, and Siriusly Sinatra, channel 75, the only channel dedicated to the music, time and spirit of Frank Sinatra.

I pretty much have my Sirius set to channel 17 (Jam On), so it will be nice to have another place to turn my dial on my receiver! :)

Woo Hoo! This announcement will ensure I buy a new antennae for my mobile unit, as the cheap wire broke off my old one. Still aggravated at sirius, but willing to forgive if The Dead gets a channel! I am not familiar with sat. radio. Is it possible to record or download the programming for archiving. They are going to play shows from the vault that have not been released and I would love to have them all. TomBanjo

Hey all you satellite radio listeners... if you have XM and not Sirius...do not fret.XM & Sirius will be merging this summer 2007 and whether you have an XM or a Sirius unit you will get all the stations previously on either. I just got a letter about it from XM in the mail. Sooo Cool my friends. So excited. No exact date stated however. Keep checking back here... I am sure there will be big news about it. Amy in Hampton

I have dish network and sirius is included, not all the stations but enough.Does anyone know if Bill Walton will be back with one more saturday night? That was the best thing on Sirius EVER! Besides the news that the Dead will have thier own channel. They should have always had one, there is way more Dead stuff out there than the stones and the who?, If anyone should know about Bill let us in on it, as I miss all the stories that he told on the show, he is one hell of a teller.... f

Sirius is radio transmitted over stellite instead of land based transmission towers. This means no FCC rules, no commercials, except on Howard Stern's channels, and a TON of variety for every imaginable musical taste, with NO COMMERCIALS. You need a special radio, and sometimes the reception isn't all that, but the $13/month subscription is well worth it. The Jam Band channel has opened my musical horizons to unimaginable proportions! Get Sirius!

I'm stoked about getting a full channel on my Sirius that's devoted to GD. I listen to Jam On (#17) and have been perplexed that they would have an hour per day devoted to Phish, but the only Deadicated time slot was with Bill Walton on Saturday night. Don't get me wrong, it was a great show(especially the interviews!!), but how can you have a jam band station without more GD??Well, now I understand! They were holding back for a full channel! I hope that the vault experts are heavily involved and that they give us some insights on the tapes they play. Also, I wonder if they will have a taper's section type of feature where they play some selections from that day in Dead history... I love love love Sirius and this new channel will be the icing on an already tasty cake!!! :^)

I've had Sirius almost two years, I'm a delivery driver and listen at least 8 hours a day... It's the best!!! It hasn't gotten 'old' at all, in fact it just seems to be getting better. Especially with the GD channel on the way. Ch.17 Jam On is great, but they tend to hold back on the really long jams.

The proposed merger of XM and Sirius is NOT a done deal, far from it. It is facing huge opposition by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). The NAB represents the interests of terrestrial, or traditional broadcast radio. The NAB is lobbying hard in DC to convince your elected officials and the FCC that a merger of the two satellite radio providers would constitute a monopoly and would have a seriously negative impact on customers of satellite radio. What the merger would actually do, and what the NAB ia fearful of, is provide radio listeners with a better product than they offer which would GREATLY affect the advertising dollars spent on traditional radio. I don't mean to get too political on eveyone, but if you have an opinion on this issue either way, drop your elected officials and the FCC a line by visiting www.siriusmerger.com or www.xmmerger.com. Can't wait till the GD channel is born on Sirius, hope they include some Jerry Band, too. Be careful out there...

Sirius Satellite Radio is also broadcasting the entire Live Earth event from all the sites involved. The lineup looks pretty weak if you ask me though.

Krafty is right. The proposed merger between XM and Sirius is taking longer to get through the government red tape than exxon/mobile or at&t/cingular or any of these other mergers that actually affect our daily lives. why? It's not as if satellite radio is something that people can't live without. Who really cares? Traditional radio is the one who cares so much. They want to keep XM and Sirius separate so that they have to compete with each other and maybe go out of business. It's complete bullshit... But back to topic, I can't wait to hear this channel!!!! :^D

I got Sirius this past December. I really had doubts about the whole satellite radio thing so it took me a long time to jump on board. Now that I have it, I absolutely love it. There are so many choices from every genre you can think of, all without ads. Jam_On is good, but most of the time I listen just waiting for the Dead to come on. But now there is the GD station! If the preview is anything like the full time station is going to be like it is going to be smoking. Great stuff. There are a few entire live shows all day, and lots of random tunes from all different eras. It is a little jarring going from a Pigpen tune to a Vince era song back to back, but it's all part of the magic. Very satisified. Keep it coming. .
