We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Who to Contact For Replacement Discs

I need to get some replacement discs for my 30 Trips Box. I have already tried emailing Dr. Rhino and have yet to receive a reply after one week. I also tried calling into dead.net customer service and the line has been busy for over 1 hour now. Is there anyone else that I can contact? Thanks in advance for any help. UPDATE: Finally got through to customer service and they have placed the request for my replacement discs.

The Attack of "Viola Lee Blues

I'll admit I don't think I've ever met a Viola Lee I didn't like, but this show has always been a favorite. The box version is as good as I have ever heard it, even though it has circulated for years as "the Amazing Electric Wonders" shows. Here's the show from the next night, which is still in the Vault. https://archive.org/details/gd1967-11-11.116369.sbd.motb-0173.flac24 Don't let the quality spoil you though, you won't get another mutlitrack until the 1989 Trip. This is a great set, but the 1981 choice still puzzles me with that 30 minute AUD patch to finish the show. This, to me, was the first filler show for the box and they must be saving the complete 1981 stuff for another release.

Another Slow, but Steady Assault

I am just cracking into the first set of 1981. I am enjoying the 80's tremendously so far. I have to say the best thing so far in the box was '67.. I agree, KYTrips, what a show and what a recording. It ranks right up there with Two From the Vault in all time, gooey raw goodness. I love the embryonic That's It For The Other One, but the whole thing smokes. '68 and '69 delivered, but there's a rarity about a good 1970 show that gives me goosebumps when I hear a new one I have not listened to yet. Yes.. the early shows were the highlights for me, but the whole thing is very well done. Well, tearing into the second half of the box. What fun.

1967 (or The Attack of "Viola Lee Blues")

Right out of the gate this show smokes! It is readily apparent that this is a completely different animal than the 1966 Trip, and that this band has grown immeasurably in 16 months. Mickey is now in the fold, and the sound of the band is completely different. It's pretty rare for a show opener to be the best song of the show, but "Viola Lee Blues" is THAT good here. Jerry is on fire right from the start. Without a doubt, the best VLB I've heard. "It Hurts Me Too" and "Beat It On Down The Line" are both solid, but nothing extraordinary. However, BIODTL does confirm that since the 1966 Trip, Bobby has learned to become a singer, rather than a shouter. "Morning Dew" is excellent, and one of the better early versions I've heard of it. I always preferred the later versions of "Morning Dew", after they'd slowed down it's tempo considerably, but this one definitely holds its own. The first CD closes with a solid performance of "Good Morning Little School Girl" with Pig in all his glory. The second disc is a jamming tour de force... starting with a really good "That's It For The Other One", including some lyrics that obviously were altered later on by the Dead. I've never been a big fan of "New Potato Caboose" but this version makes you appreciate the song for what it is... a great jamming vehicle. The show closes with a stellar version of "Alligator" and then a perpetual "Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks)" which I didn't think would ever end (and I mean that in a good way). While I thought the 1966 show was really good for a band at the beginning of their career, this show is better by leaps and bounds in my humble opinion. If I were Robert Christgau of the Village Voice, I would rate this show an "A" with hints of an "A+".

...with your restraint! Taking it low and slow just like the 'ole crock pot. Good for you, giving them all their due. Mad respect. That theory sounded excellent to me, and what did I do upon receipt? ....jumped straight to '72, '73, '91. I share your AWE as well with the '67 Viola. Actually now that I think about it, THAT was the first song I put on when I got the box, as I knew it was one of the multi-track shows and just wanted a little taste. My jaw dropped, and I've been emitting a little drool out the side of my mouth ever since, every time at it's mention. Sixtus

Delayed listening

DaveStrang... No. I will back-burner the new box set (which I've already ordered) until I make it all the way thru the big box. I vowed to myself that when I started the big box, I wouldn't co-mingle other Dead while working through the box. Before I start the new box, I'll still have DaP 17, DaP 18 and possibly DaP 19 to catch-up on as well as some recently acquired Jerry solo stuff. It truly is a good problem to have!

I was surprised how good the 90's shows sounded. With the new box set coming out, will this further delay your listening?

Finally.... 1966!

So... almost 6 months after Boxzilla landed on my front porch, I've finally gotten around to listening to the first two shows of this embarrassment of riches. I've been so backlogged with other music and other GD releases that I've acquired in the last year, that I just kept avoiding diving into this thing. It's a nice problem to have, I know. Here are my takeaways on the 1966 show after two listens... First... the sound is terrific (in my opinion) for a live recording from 1966. The mix could have been a little more even-handed. I think Pig's organ is WAY up in the mix, so much so that it drowns out/overshadows some of Jerry's better guitar work in this show. The overall show is definitely raw, but in a good way. They certainly sound like a band that was going places (hindsight obviously being 20/20 and all). The crowd applause between songs makes it sound like there were maybe 50 or so people there. Oh... if only I had a Delorean with a flux-capacitor! Highlights for me are: Viola Lee Blues, Tastebud, Cream Puff War, Gangster of Love and In the Midnight Hour, with Gangster of Love being my favorite song in the show. I thought Viola Lee Blues sounded fantastic until I listened to it as the opener of the 1967 trip.... DAMN!!! Negatives: Cardboard Cowboy might be, IMHO, the worst song that the Dead were ever affiliated with. I can certainly understand why it was abandoned early on. Overall, for a band that had been "together" for less than a year, and that still hadn't released any studio work, I think it sounds great. This show definitely put me in the mood to keep on listening.

I assumed they were all two-track. Would love to know what else they have in the vault that are from multi-track sources. All I'm aware of are Feb Port Chester '71, April Fillmore East '71, Oct Winterland '74, and recently in his Seaside Chat, DL mentioned something from '76.

I think this one is a sleeper for the best show in the box. A dream set list for me: 1982 - 7/31, Manor Downs, Austin, TX -Promised Land is rocking, Jerry does a killer Bird Song, he flubs the first chorus in Brown Eyed Women but I still love it, a funky Scarlet>Fire and Morning Dew is epic. I agree with you 420bandito. This is an epic show and a frequent listen to my audience tape for the past 32 years (man has it been that long?!) always brings a smile to my face. This is the eve or Jerry's Birthday and the crowd is so psyched and yelling "Happy Birthday" from UJB on. The Second Set is just so hot!

...is how they will have dealt with 'severe dropout problems' from the PCM masters on (at least) the '85 show. I thought the 10-21-83 show was also derived from a beta PCM master, but I'm not sure on that. I guess we'll see. After so many fantastic releases, I am faithful they will have done a fine job patching this one up. Also, I have not been partaking in the listening parties so I do not know what if anything from Riverbend, Augusta or Worcester they have sampled thus far. I want to listen with virgin ears. Proto 30 Trips

For those of you who own both 'The Golden Road' & 'Beyond Description' box sets, you can make up a 'Proto 30 Trips' by adding ALL of the bonus material from each of the releases, even the live albums ( 'Live Dead', 'Skull & Roses', 'Reckoning' & 'Dead Set'. I left off 'Europe 72 since it's already well represented) onto 1 playlist and arranging everything chronologically. It makes for a great overview of the band as well as "UPPING" the psyche factor for the Mother Box.

I love the early 80s. The folk songs were especially sweet then, such as Jack-a-roe and Peggy-o. Best period for these. 7/18/76 is my favorite unreleased show ever. The second set is so hot, it's one of those moments that's simply better than anything imaginable, except maybe that one Dark Star...you know the one ;)

Box of Rain - delayed shipment?

Box of Rain is on the single - good news for those of us who are vinyl heads - not such good news for those without a deck. Sadly there is however on CD the following tracks - Dough Knees, Day Job and Way to Go Home - I also have a horrible feeling there's a samba in the rain there too...still at least we don't have to suffer a Wave to the Wind (unless that's on the bonus disc lol). As for the Box video reveal - we've seen and heard nothing....makes me think that there'll be a delayed shipping email soon - if it's not already in post-production and ready for a reveal by now - it will be delayed.... Maybe they'll delay and throw in the crappy FTW box as a 'bonus' - in which case I'll take Wave to the Wind instead lol....

...keep the thesaurus readily available, as yours is the first countdown that's inspired an electric current of Christmasy anticipation since the first week of January when I stood at the site's darkened windows wondering whether anyone was still home! Though, all is shortly to be forgiven... Incidentally, I dreamed of 30 Tripz last week; well, rather a nightmare - the kind you have/had incident to nervous anticipation of exam week at university. I'd received the box - a cheaply constructed affair with a glossy veneer peeled in many places to reveal pabulum brown cardboard beneath - and immediately noticed shows missing as well as caramel - yes, caramel - on the 7 inch single that I removed from a plastic sheath and carried out into a grey rainfall thinking to clean it off, at which time I awoke in a cold sweat. True story (except for a bit of hyperbolic cliche with the "cold sweat" business). I wasn't wed to the necessity of a video unveiling, but sound slumber may dictate I join the growing chorus of petitioners.../peace, K

Thank you for the link! I was hoping for a peak inside the box, but the exterior shots are awesome. Boxzilla looks better than I imagined. I'm listening to creampuff as I type this on headphones. The mix is interesting. Jerry's vocals are 100% on the left speaker only and pig's organ are 90% on the right speaker. Jerry's guitar is also much heavier on the right. Not my favorite dead mix, but it really shows how focused on psychedelica they were at this time. I can't wait for this box!!!

Dead & Co doing 7 or 8 cities - hope they come to Boston

I saw my nephew who's now in LA and he had heard from very good sources that they're doing 7 or 8 cities. I asked if they were doing Boston, he did not know. Here's hoping they play there!!! Wow nice pictures of the boxset - hopefully that's real wood and not veneer (or paper) on cardboard. Now I want to see the unveiling - only 200 copies left (according to the main page).

Boxzilla?

After seeing this I'm not sure if the name "Boxzilla" still fits... Boxzilla sounds so big and fierce. Sure it's big, but maybe a little more dainty than fierce. "Boxarella," or "Big Box Mama?" Don't get me wrong... I really like the art. I think it captures the free-spirit celebration that is the Grateful Dead show. Only seeing three sides (2 sides and top), I'm imagining that the four sides are each a season to represent winter, spring, summer and fall tours (fall and summer shown here). Again, really want to see the inside and how the CDs are cased.

That looks so nice. Now it would be nice to see some scroll photos, maybe a glance at how the CDs are housed. Are they Digipacks or in sleeves? Just a single show out of the box on a table.

I think it looks great, I thought it was going to be some shabby box judging from the picture here. A black box with that who care image. But I like the look of the toy chest,, it will look on the shelf next to the other box sets! :-) You spend a chunk for these box sets, I want them to look good.

Not to ruffle any feathers but this box looks BETTER than the trunk E72 was housed in.As for a name I like GARGANTUA it fits as the box alone is GARGANTUAN, & I too would like to see just how the shows are packaged. Just think if TPTB show us exactly what GARGANTUA contains it SELLS OUT, if I didn't already preorder I believe I would just based on the box itself, if the box looks that good you know the contents look GREAT. PLEAE PLEASE PLEASE let's see the contents!!!!

Got my deadbase50 today. I know have so much info to enjoy. Hard to believe that set lists could make me so excited. I got to see the box today and can't wait until I have it show up at my house. I have misses out on the last few box sets and so grateful that I am getting this one.

The look

The artwork looks cool so far, from what we've seen. Though the names of the band members written on the bottom is not only unnecessary, it detracts from the aesthetic presentation of the box. In my opinion, a poor artistic choice. Then again, maybe we don't know the names of the band members, and we can look at the box to be reminded. As it turns out, the decision to include those names is courtesy of the Road Trips Packaging Commitee and the United Boxcutters of America.

I may be in favor of the RT packaging (am I one of the few?), but I am definitely against box cutter samurais! Be more careful with the blades people!P.S. Box concept looks nice! Names to include Bruce, Tom, Vince, Brent, Donna Jean, Keith? Is there room?

Art cont'd

Was just thinking how much prettier the Mona Lisa would look if the words Mona Lisa were drawn in big letters across the bottom of the painting. This is the effect the names written on the bottom of this box has to me. A beautiful picture- a gorgeous box, and then these huge distracting words at the bottom. Anyways, just my two cents. Probably should have kept the criticism to myself.

Packing it

I REALLY REALLY hope this gets packed with grate care.......this will be coming to Australia soon and will take pride of place in my study with all my other Dead, ABB etc. box sets.... PLEASE Rhino pack this with care.....it has so many roads to travel............ Now WHAT's inside......what's the goodies...... PS I have for sale the DELETED and RARE complete 2013 numbered Allman Brothers Band live tour box set - retailed at 699$US - I'm selling for $799US plus shipping from Oz to USA - a one-time offer as I've seen this set go on ebay for over $1000US.... Also Dead May 1977 box for sale for $350US - shipping included

The BOX!!

Since the box itself appears to be high, it might house 2 levels - 15 shows each level - if you take 15 DaP's and group them together and then double that area you can get the idea. It still leaves room for the book and any extras. Hopefully it'll be DaP cases vs. those sh*tty Road Trips digipacks.

I fell asleep last night....

....reading DeadBase 50. Woke up a couple of hours later with it resting on my chest. No wonder it was hard to breathe. Thought I cracked my sternum! Love, love, love this tome. I found out a few minutes ago that David Crosby sat in on the second half of the second set during the 9.10.72 Hollywood Palladium show. Jumped right to it on relisten.net and am checking it out now. Who knew? I sure as hell didn't....priceless....

....hey Dave, I posted a similar 30 Trips box interior set up on the Nashville board a few minutes ago. I, however, think it will be only one level of discs as opposed to stacked. Is the box high? Or those of us buying it?.... ....double post. Sorry. I haven't done That in a while....

extras

Box looks great - and the shows speak for themselves - but got a feeling we'll be a little let down on 'extras' - I think it's the book and scroll - that's it..... Not that I need the secret compartment and hidden coin (Other one TOO) or backstage pass replicas.....I'd want real extras (a photobook like the McCartney remasters), bonus discs, downloadable content card, a visual counterpart (i.e. dvd of last ever show), something more I'd actually use....however it will be what it will be...was disappointed as hell with lack of extras on Europe box but the music made up for it - I'm sure that will be the case here (exclusing Dough Knees, Day Job, Samba in the Rain etc...)
