"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

So what alternatives are out there to the iPod Classic if I want to carry around lots of high quality music? I know there are a lot of lesser known brands but which ones deliver volume and quality playback? Audiophile comments welcome!

Oh my? What am I to do? I am working my way through Boxzilla for my first listens, going in order. I am currently listening to Albany '93. Just now DaP16 has arrived in my mail box! Do I continue with Boxzilla or switch to Dap16? On the trials & tribulations of being a Dead Head in 2015!! I am sorry, but I have NO sympathy for any of you out there with complaints! (Other then anyone who has not yet received their Boxzilla and of course all USB waiters) This is just a phenomenal time to be a follower of this GRATE band. Rock on ps - I have decided to finish up Boxzilla first

...much appreciated, this was perplexing me as I was looking around on Amazon last night, in a semi-panic mode. Even as I was driving in to work today stuck in a monumental Boston traffic jam talking to the wifey on the phone recounting my woes to her, she did very pointedly say that I'm 'abnormal' in terms of the volume of music I want (nay, need) to make portable, claiming most normal people don't need to tote so much around, let alone actually have the sheer volume that I have. Then I went on to clarify that what I have is a mere drop in the bucket, and there are tons of others out there who have many times more than I have. Just trying to normalize my abnormality... Indeed, I am familiar with the Relisten app, it's pretty sweet I must say. But also a big part of me likes to actually have the music to hold in my hand, I'm not always gonna have a WiFi connection, etc. But it, along with the LMA, are the next best thing.

While unsatisfying, as a fellow former adherent to the iPod classic and its 160GB, here are the reasons why Apple discontinued: * decreased iPod sales--particularly the larger sized models like the Classic--given the proliferation of iPhones (or competitors) with much larger storage space. * Push towards cloud-based storage, especially iCloud and iTunes Match * Increased use of streaming music services, including but well before the rollout of Apple Music. That last point is particularly frustrating for Heads where most of what we want to listen to are live recordings and not available on a streaming service. That said, Spotify does have the entire "official release" live catalogue including Road Trips and the like, so it fills that void. For streaming access to the LMA recordings try the "Relisten" app, which was recently renamed from the prior Listen to the Dead App. Forget if it is free or not, but even if not the cost is low. Great resource

The immediate image that came to my mind when I read the Rhino email was that Discover card commercial with the Russian guy answering the phone as customer service and saying "This is Peggy." That is a snapshot of Rhino's shipping department. I never rip Rhino for the many little bumps in the road (and I have suffered more than one of them) but this fiasco with the USB is an absolute fucking disgrace and utterly inexcusable. The delay is one thing, but the sin is in the complete and total lack of any pro-active communication from Rhino to the people who have been charged the $700 already. People can and will handle bad news, you just have to be up front in explaining and communicating it to them. Leaving people in dark is never a good strategy when you are in the business of consumer goods and relationships.

I asked Dr Rhino about the ATL-area delays and he kindly responded that there was a "shipping label issue" and that a batch of boxes "didn't go out". So it's not a "replacement" box, just a new shipping label and delayed delivery. All's well that ends well. I'm ripping away.

Wow, what a bounty of riches. 1973 was a great year...too many excellent songs to choose from on stage. This release has 30 tunes, opens with a great Cumberland, has a 'Wave tHAT fLAG' & a still being worked on They Love each Other. Awesome show...but back to Boxzilla tonight...that 68 show is mind melting.

Nice write-ups on Headphones, Zuck. Makes me want two new sets of them instead of just one. Nice links too further on down the thread. Perhaps a Christmas gift to myself... ______________________ Additional Edit: After looking more closely at the headphone review link and some deep personal reflection... I have come to the shocking conclusion that I must have been switched at birth with some trust fund family living in a penthouse in Manhattan. All that was his 'personal' equipment. If you add it all up, its probably worth as much as my freakin' house. ..and yet I feel I am its rightful owner, deserving of all of it, not him. Oh, the irony.. switched at birth is the only solution to the paradox.

So tomorrow is the day that Rhino has a HUGE pay day, I called CS yesterday to make sure that everything is just exactly perfect according to the person I spoke to she said all systems are a GO!!! While she had me on the phone she wanted me to verify my payment method & billing & shipping addresses again everything is copasetic. So Rhino let's end the madness & TAKE MY MONEY, PLEASE!!!!! However she couldn't answer this question, "does the box set delay also carry over to the 4 disc set"? I'm thinking about ordering one just to tide me over until BOXZILLA is actually in my hot hands. My order status states that the shipping date is October 31st, not mid October. Has anyone else noticed that October 31st is a Saturday, I didn't even know it until the kids said to me today before they left for school "ooh dad Halloween is on a Saturday", "I said you're kidding me" so I check the calendar and sure enough October 31st is on a Saturday so let's put this in perspective, TPTB are going to come in on a Saturday & ship approximately 6500 box sets? I think NOT I say the actual ship date will either be 10/29,30 or 11/2. While I'm at it what about those of us who opted for the NBD shipping option as there appears to be no definite shipping date how are they going to determine an actual "next business day". So it appears the shipping date will be the day you receive a shipping notice from dead.net, which could be anywhere from 10/15-11/2. Well time to fight southbound I-95 traffic, I just LOVE road construction!!!!! Deadland you have a HAPPY WEDNESDAY!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure Oct 31st is a placeholder date that they needed to put in. I'd bet it needs to be a actual date not just "Mid-October". This is common practice in products that they don't have a actual hard date to tell retailers yet. We just need to R-E-L-A-X and enjoy some good music until then. Love the discussions folks!

My life is rich, but I'm not wealthy. The best value headphones I own are the KOSS Portapros. Amazing sound quality in a package small enough to carry with the laptop. Jim, there is good audio gear at nearly every price point. A quality source file and my Portapros can stone me, every time. Personally, I'm a fan of open headphones if the listening environment is right for that. Thanks so much for the outpouring of love and kindness to this Lost Sailor. I'll be in touch with you all, I'm a bit overwhelmed at the moment. Thanks for the heads up, Dusty. I need to watch it again! One Man, tell me more about the E72 box mastering drama? Some were done better than others? I just finished 4/24 and it sounds pretty tasty! Happy Humpday Deadland!

Off topic, I know, but I've got a few issues with some of my GD stuff that I've purchased over the years on the secondary market. Does anyone have any experience with CD/DVD refinishing machines (i.e. do they work? What's a good, cost-effective model?)? Specifically, over 2 months after having purchased it, I find that I'm having issues with Disc 3 of the Winterland '73 box set, and at this point, it's too late to go back to the seller with any issues, so I'm hoping maybe cleaning/refinishing the disc will be beneficial. Also, I've got so many CDs that it occurred to me that having a product like this around might be helpful. Thoughts? Help, Deadland!

My guess is there will be more in a week. You figure, they are going to charge the cards tomorrow, and that will generate a list of people whose cards did not go through for whatever reason. They have already said that if that happens, they will attempt to get a hold of those people to get a card that works. The question is, how long will they give people to respond before they put their box back on the inventory shelf. I'm guessing not more than a week.

I'm sure more copies will become available for sale over the next few days as some of the pre-orders will be cancelled due to non-payment. With 6500 copies it is inevitable that some charges won't go through and some folks will miss the CS call to update their payment info, or won't be able to make payment for whatever reason.

Don't buy a refinisher. Have it sent off, or if you want to pay all the charges, I'll have it done for you at a place by me.They have an ECO refinisher. It's basically the best out there. I've had it take bad skips out. If the foil isn't damaged, and you can't see through the "paint" on the non-playing side.. then 95% chance it can be fixed. The place by me charges $2 + take (2.16) per disc. When it's done, it looks good as new. i would NOT buy one for home though. And this unit, that they have, costs $4000 to buy. Find someone who has one of those, or send it off to have it done. I've probably had 300 discs re-done by them since I've been selling cd's.

I was able to add one to my cart just now. As was posted earlier, it'll probably fluctuate, with a bunch being put back up for sale tomorrow once they start running cards. I'm still trying not to buy a second one. But if there's one left before they actually ship, I may bite the bullet.

Nice Wonka reference, Zuck.. Veruca Salt and my gf have a few things in common. Thanks for the words of encouragement, Guss West. I think that is how I am going to judge wealth from now on.. by how many $10,000 sets of headphones a person has (kidding). I have a new way to tell what kinds of seats you have at shows too.. you can tell by how good the weed smells. They tend to smoke crap weed in the nosebleeds and kind bud on the orchestra pit. Give it a try.. I'm pretty sure I am on to something. ok.. I'm getting too philosophical now, which I tend to reserve for after I've had three beers. I guess it started with headphone envy. Have a good one all. This is a good week in GD history, by the way.. lots of great shows in mid September.

Hello, long time reader first time poster! Does anyone know the first show that the Band played all three verses of Fire? I have a number of '77 shows but no middle verse. In that vein, with three verses being a mandatory requirement, what is your best version of Scarlet->Fire? Does anything beat 6-16-85 at the Greek?

I think it was first done on 9/2/78.. As for best version.. its all subjective, there's no shortage of great versions of this duo. The transition between songs is usually what does it for me.. I like the article about this in the New Yorker that focuses on the Dave's Picks 8 version, that's worth a read. Recently I spent some time listening to the one on Dicks Picks 18. There's a lot in '77 that get good mentions. Lots of good Reggae sounding versions early on. The one on Dave's #8 does sound pretty good as does the '85 Greek (there's actually a few Greek S>F's that are hot). Too difficult to make a call on this one.

My favorite Scarlet Fires: DP 29 (right wjonjd?) Crisp aggressive chords from Jerry first 5 min of Scarlet. 5/17/77 (someone called this the quacking duck version - brilliant!) 7/7/89. Jerry plays a little melody just before the transition that I've not heard elsewhere. 5/13/77. Very energetic and exciting Scarlet led by the drummers. Thanks for this one KeithFan! Egypt '78. Awesome 15 minute standalone Fire on the Mountain

I do enjoy these discussions; positive insights and analysis (good and bad). I got to thinking about the Scarlet > Fire segments of shows. This might add some controversy, but its become the way I look at this part of the post hiatus show. To me, the Scarlet > Fire segment in a way replaced the Jazz fueled Dark Star type jamming of 68 - 74 as the band began to evolve from the acid drenched monster into a harder rockin' machine. The Scarlet>Fire, Playin'>Terrapin, etc. replaced the Dark Star suites and we see less piano, more B3, more muscular, less pin drop finesse. Like it or leave it.. it was a big part of the bands evolution. At least that's the way I view it. I know its not for everyone.. but I really enjoy the midi-fueled transition from Copps Coliseum on 3/22/90. Too bad it was mixed from the stereo DAT masters instead of the multi-tracks, but I digress. _____ One add: I really like the '79 Stanley Show, good call danc.

also happy to see the box has now been swapped for cash and my credit card is happily being paid off as I type. I wonder how they are going to ship these suckers to ensure they make it to our stoops in one piece - it appears to be a wooden crate, so I anticipate they will take grate care with the packaging. Psyched things are moving and looking forward to the treasure trove.

one more since Scarlet Fire and its a fine one with Keith and Donna.. https://archive.org/details/gd1979-02-10.set2.sbd.miller.97352.sbeok.fl… Grateful Dead Live at Soldier's And Sailors Memorial Hall.. February 10, 1979.. Later in 1979, the Grateful Dead would reappear at the same venue with a whole new look and some new songs (12.11.79), and a couple weeks later they would debut a new soundsystem.. I had to cancel my order on 9/16 because of some financial difficulties down the road, and I need the money. Besides that, I have most of the official releases, all of the Dick's & the Dave's (to 14), the Road Trips, the Downloads, most of the boxes: May77, Europe 72, Fillmore West 69 and Winterland 73 & 77 - except the Spring 90 boxes, and most of the standalone show releases. And plenty of boot downloads and a few pressed silver CD boots, and a couple of old cassettes as well. So I'm not really in the "I need a new GD show" category, I'll just rediscover the greatness of some shows that I haven't listened to in a while. Has anyone gotten the email with the pdf of the book or the mp3's of the shows contained in this collection yet? Enjoy, enjoy.

"Here she is, your Komodo dragon." Guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow for the leak of classified documents. Just in case, for the brother Agents in the field- "The red castle drifts north- The false eagle carries a blue pouch." Take care everyone, see you on the other side.

Roger that. Classified Documents on their way, clearly the work of Bolo. The Komodo Dragon has matches and is heading to town. Repeat: There's a dragon with matches that's loose on the town.
