We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Somebody on the other thread, I forget who, brought up a point about the secondary market, which was basically that Rhino depends on it to ensure they sell x number of copies of each release in a very short amount of time. This guy who wrote the article worked for a record company or something, I wish I could find the post. But it totally makes sense. Basically, Rhino needs to sellout each release in 3 or 4 weeks to not only be profitable, but to extend the life of the series. By making it limited edition, they sellout immediately and actually rely on the secondary market to be there and buy out what the individuals don't buy. It amounts to free distribution for Rhino. They sell off their 16,500 Dave's Picks in a week, and never pay a dime in distribution costs. For Rhino this means more dollars per unit and less units sold to make both make a profit and re-invest in the next release (and making the next profit). So I get it. Rhino is a very unique position, in that they have a rare product with seemingly no end, and this thing called the internet. And in fact, these very message boards are a major source of advertisement. I'm just happy I'm ahead of the curve now. I spent a lot on eBay back-filling my Dead collection. What I would be interested in, is the legalities involved in re-issuing a product that they originally sold as a limited quantity item. Even if legal, I doubt they would do it, out of fear of ruining their current, buy it now, while it's hot sales model, which is undoubtedly working. One thing I feel confident in, is that if Rhino felt that re-releasing FW 69 Complete would be profitable in the long run, they would do it (and perhaps they will). But I imagine it's a tricky balance, as Morning Sun said - never underestimate the turmoil of breaking a promise to the original people who bought it (of whom I am not one - fucker cost me 400 bucks). Plus I'm sure they all have a dozen copies of all of them that they're saving for 10 years from now when they're going for a grand on eBay ;-)

FW 69 re-release

Not sure what the exact wording was when they first released it, but some of the music included in the set has been available on the 3 disc compilation.Rhino could produce a set with all 4 FW 69 shows, add 2-11-69 Fillmore East release, change the name and add a disclaimer that would say something like "portions of this set was previously released as Ltd Edition FW box set, etc." Lots of "limited Edition only", and "promo only" music has been re-released that way.

FWIW, let me echo SpaceBro's (and others) sentiment: I own FW'69, and enjoy it immensely.By all means, re-release it, so that more people can enjoy it. I do not mind scalping, or a secondary market. In general, I don't mind limited editions, bonus discs with first runs etc; companies can run their business as they see fit. But I'm a capitalist through and through: if more people want it, and Rhino can make more money, by all means let's do it. I know that the secondary market, at least in this particular case, exists bcause Rhino said that FW'69 would never be released (in any form?) again. Some people would feel cheated if, after paying a lot (NOT to Rhino though), it was re-released. But surely most Deadheads would want other Deadheads to be able to acquire this set, and there should be some way around it (cheaper packaging or whatever) to get past this?

Yes, reissue it as a limited edition of 16,000.$130 each + shipping and sales taxes where applicable. For that $130 you'll get the four shows - 2/27, 2/28, 3/1 & 3/2/1969 in 4 tye-dyed design artwork, thin cardboard type sleeves with a simple booklet with only the song titles, the track times, the songwriters credits and publishers credits with two or three photos, WITHOUT AN ESSAY, all enclosed in a lightweight cardboard case with artwork similar to the original 2005 issue.

shrine vinyl et al...

glad to hear the 69 shrine vinyl release sounds so good. i plan on picking one up soon. as for the 69 box, and other limited releases, i think rhino needs to view their 'investment' in the grateful dead as being holders of something culturally significant. limited edition stuff should be just the initial physical product, but everything should be available via download. as i've said before, they should act like smithsonian/folkways, where nothing they have ever released goes out of print. you can't go to their site and order an original woody guthrie or leadbelly record, those have been out of print forever, but you can download it or order a custom burned cd. there is nothing you can not order. i believe rhino is just waiting for the last 150 usb's to sell, then they will offer all 30 shows via download. as for the 69box, i don't remember their wording, but a physical product probably can't, or shouldn't, be re-released that way, but all 4 shows should be put out via download, if the suits think they can legally do it. if not, lesson learned....

Dennis Wilmot, feel free to ramble on, you made some good points in a funny way. it sounds like I may have been one of the same two people seated next to you at shows;)For my two cents, I have the 30 trips box and it wouldn't bother me a bit if they made another production run in the future, with or without all the extras. I didn't buy it as an investment, I purchased it because I wanted to have the music and after missing out on FW69 I knew I would regret not having it more than I would regret spending the money. At some point I would like to pick up FW69, but there is a limit to what I can pay and feel OK about the purchase. I understand that the limited edition model is probably what makes the ongoing releases possible to this extent, so it is what it is, but it seems that they could set it up so that it would be possible to reissue things after some period of time. As far as copying limited edition releases, I guess the band makes their money when the original sale occurs and are unaffected by any subsequent transactions, so there's that.

Re-releases, Limited Editions, illegal copies, ebay prices

I throw my 2 cents into this, I agree with those that say a release of limited edition stuff as maybe a digital download is just fine with me. As always if price is the limiting factor I can not believe you can't find someone to make you a copy. Some say "oh that's illegal", sounds like corporate lawyer talk to me. I agree you shouldn't be knocking out 1,000 copies of something and selling them at the local flea market, but to slip a buddy a copy, fuck no. I remember when people didn't even think twice about making a cassette copy for a friend. Of course the "industry" hated that, they even tried to get a "tax" on blank tapes to cover the "losses" they were suffering. What hogwash! The record companies seem to be doing fine! Ebay prices will disappear or come down if people stop buying them, just like tickets for sporting events (which sports fan seem to believe are way out of whack). Remember when FM first took off and stations would play a perfect album side, even told you when to start your tape. I'm sorry if the record industry makes a product that is easy to copy. Why didn't they just keep producing records? You couldn't copy them as easily as cd. Because they wanted to squeeze out the free music of radio, cd's people would buy more of because you could take them in your car. Did the industry ever return money for those shit 8 tracks that they sold? Or even the shit cassettes they sold? Those store bought tapes NEVER lasted long, but a good maxell made at home lasted forever? I still have cassettes I made from 1980 that play just fine. But the few store bought ones I got the cases always warped in the heat.I think I can most assuredly say that if you could shove a new caddy into a port of the computer and have it shit out a new caddy, everyone would have a new caddy and be saying fuck GM. (probably a lot of people already saying that) You don't see anyone making "illegal" copies of books and you could zerox a whole book. I'm surprise the corporate lawyers haven't tried to shut down public libraries, since they allow people to listen, read and view all copyright material without paying any fee to the owner of the copy right material. There was a point when Mickey Mouse was about to enter the public domain and Disney just couldn't let that happen, so they had congressman Sony Bono push thru a revision of the copyright laws that allowed them to keep the copyright. (see - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act ) Technically if you owned a bar, you couldn't play cd's you own there without a fee being paid to industry. CD's YOU OWN! Can you imagine if you bought a repair guide for a car you owned and you got a second car of the same make and being told you couldn't use that manual to fix the second car, that the use of the manual was only for the first car. You have that same thing with software you buy, you buy the package but can't use it where ever you want, only once (maybe 3 times for some) Sorry I've rambled a bit, but corporations piss me off. They want risk socialize and profits privatized. They want to be citizens with no one responsible for jail time. Fuck them! Record profits and the world still fights for crumbs. On the illegal front, I get a chuckle out of this. I thought it was illegal to bring "drugs" into shows or buy and sell them. Oh, I forgot nobody who went to dead shows did drugs. Like nobody in England watches Doctor Who. The show has been on for 50 years and nobody admits they watch it! Just like back in the .net days, nobody on net.dead did drugs! I must have always got seated next to the same other 2 people who did :-) Once again sorry for the excessive rambling.

Just to be clear...

I am fully supportive of a re-release of the FW69 box. The whole reason I have the info that I have is that (being the anal retentive completist that I am) I emailed David Lemieux to ask why in the hell the box set hadn't been reissued. Any deadhead that has looked at eBay in the last 5 years can see that this box is in absurdly high demand. I hate the idea of limited releases and find it absurd that they would limit anything. The only thing that does is drive up the price on secondary markets (just look at the 30 trips box on eBay).

excellent call on 11/2/69. It's the older brother (even though it's technically younger) of 10/25/69. These two monumental Dark Stars from partial tapes should be out there someday. I bet both shows could make an exceptional 3-disc Dave's Picks

Re: E72 Reviews

KeithFan, I hope you start feeling better and wish you a speedy recovery. It would be interesting to revisit this, it was made before the Trunk was shipped and there were certain shows where the tapes that circulated were not pristine. My guess is the ratings would tighten up a bit now that all the recordings are more or less similar in quality. I also think there's some shows that might come in a bit higher than his top picks. Like many have said here, I really like the DS through Caution jam from 4/8 - its stunning. I like the DS from 4/14 but the caution jam from 4/17 (and the bozo masked video portion from this show). I like the looseness and structure of the 5/4 DS a lot. I like the 5/10 Other One a bit more than 5/3, to me it has better continuity as its not broken up and has a real nice, jazzy structure to it, like bread pudding. 5/11 is a masterpiece, but I have not revisited it for some time. 4/24 is a masterpiece also and really stands out for many reasons. The whole Lyceum run is special, I find myself going to a few parts of the sleeper show 5/24, I really like the China>Rider, Playin' for example. He picks 5/3 as his favorite overall, but I tend to like a few of the DS shows a little more. He definitely put some time into the review and I like his rating system. His reviews are all over Arhive.org, especially the old shows but it looks like he got into it with some there and more or less disappeared. I agree with you on the sound quality of 4/26 but lately I find myself reaching for different shows instead. Not sure why.. In truth, every time I nail down my favorite one or two shows.. I can pull another one of the shelf, put on some headphones and I have a new favorite.

claney - will check out that TOO. Recently just checked out the DaP 11 Truckin' => TOO => Brokendown at someone's recommendation (maybe you), and it's a barnburner. Gary Far - lol - I was hoping some Yes fan would pick up on that reference. RIP Chris Squire, it was his song. Too bad they never pulled Jon back in the ring for one last show with the classic lineup (and it's not as if they can just pull in the "other" bass player at this point, because it's the one position that never had two members, ABWH / Levin not withstanding). Jim - I also am a huge fan of 4/24 - the way part II starts with Keith's piano introduction, and that melody they kick off for the one and only time at around 9:20 - so brief, yet so memorable. My first Dark Star in retrospect. I think 5/18 and 5/23 Dark Stars are damn fine, maybe my favorites after 4/8, which I agree is unparalleled. I get a little bit lost on 5/4 and 5/11; I guess my preference is rhythm and melody over discordant space exploration (which I like in smaller doses). And then there are the Tivoli Brothers, which are a nice ride themselves, both with killer (if not opposite) segues into Sugar Magnolia. And then, I don't know about you, but I someone lump 8/27/72 in with E72 shows, I think because of the pristine multi-track sound quality, so I'll put in a kudo for 8/27/72. Edit - by the way, also love the 5/24 Rider. Because I love 5/3 ChinaCat, and don't care for its associated Rider (with all of the vocal overdubs), I put The China Cat from 5/3 with the Rider from 5/24, and..heh...it's seamless. I don't know who to complement on that - Jeff Norman, the Grateful Dead, or myself. I'll go with myself since the prior parties are most likely unaware.

30 Trips listening

All I can say is WOW!! If the stream sounds this good I cannot wait to hear the cds. I have been jumping all around and I am amazed at the sound quality. So far I have listened to: '66, '95, '85, '71, '94, '67, and '84. I was amazed at how good Jerry sounded on the '94 show. I saw my last show in '87 and I had been led to believe that his voice was shot by the '90's, but that certainly is not the case here. Hats off once again to DL for finding gems from all years. He remains 'Da Man!! Rock on

...hbob, about that '94 show

...I was at that Boston Garden show and despite it being '94, it was probably one of the best shows I ever attended. Energy was up, up and well the setlist says a lot with the H>S>F opener, the well documented So Many Roads (this appeared in a '30 Days of Dead'), that Scarlet > Fire and Terrapin and yes the Stella Blue...all raucous. In total agreement, it sounds great and was such a thrill to be there in my hometown venue, no less.

Yup, saw Yes in Jul 2013, they were good with new singer, still not the same. Although Chris' base bombs were awesome. I saw (if memory serves)the opening night of ABWH at Mud Island in Memphis in 1989. Got busted taping. Ended up stage right about 10 feet from Steve Howe for about half the show as they were trying to decide whether to call the authorities. They took the tapes, gave us back the equipment and let us return to our seats. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and still smuggled the deck in my shorts. Kept thinking, it is about to fall out. Please let me in, come on. Got in, set-up had the meters pinging just right. Had two small shotgun Mics sticking out of a baseball cap. Friend next to me poked me, turn to the right and there is security looking. Try to grab the hat and pull it off, they motion us out of the seats. To this day I just do not understand. They fans clapped and mocked us. They were the ones that turned us in. What, were they worried everyone in the crowd was going to jail? I bet they were shocked when we triumphantly returned. Spent some time with their tour manager, he was cool about it. Even Steve Howe came over laughing and gave us a wink. He (tour mgr) figured we were not part of professional money making bootleggers (and questioned us about that). Guess the look in our eyes gave it away and the trippy shirts we had on. I was wearing a flipped out Berzerkly shirt I got out there in 87. Great show even with the bust. Afternoon liquid, with the band opening just 30 minutes before sunset.

Gary - indeed, I am an avid collector and builder of many many sets....pretty much all original trilogy stuff...and yes...my amazing better half got me BOTH the Lego Star Destroyer AND DEATH STAR last Christmas. She was mortified but did it anyway. I have an entire 'Toy Closet' inhabited by many of these things and some Lord of the Rings stuff too...it's sad but happy - really.

Oh dear lord I put on Hofheinz/Houston 11-18-72 to delve a bit further and deeper into the year and the ~25 min Playin in the Band....holy crap WTF is going on here.....the intensity lifts you out of your chair for the first 12 minutes straight, as in they never even come up for a breath. Then right at 18:21 something utterly magical happens, when Billy rips a huge drum smack after some of the only moments of almost space and god it just lifts off again into a frenzy and ON A DIME. Impressive, erupting so intensely out of almost....nothing. Just thought I’d share my awe for consumption.

Yes, this Playin In The Band is truly AMAZING! One of my first tapes I acquired when I began to collect & trade tapes in earnest, decades ago. I remember it was a crispy lo-gen tape. It was given to me with the instructions to "learn this Playin' and you will NOT be disapointed." I can't remember if I had the whole show on these 2 tapes or not.

Lego Star Wars is my jam!

Awesome! I too am an avid AFOL and collector and builder of all things Lego SW. I have the Death Star also and it's in my daughter's room. I have 3 shelves dedicated to my SW Lego sets, they are taking over the house much to my wife's chagrin. Ha! I also build a few other sets from time to time that interest me(just put Wall-E together on Tuesday night! Great set) but mainly stay on Star Wars. Lego is so fun and good for the brain. Still waiting for someone to make the Lego Wall of Sound and submit it to the Ideas site. If we can get 10,000 votes for the superbowl halftime show I know we could get that many for a Wall of Sound ideas set!

When talk of the Wall of Sound Box set was circulating, complete with a WOS Fathead to put on your wall behind your big boy stereo.. Someone mentioned building a WOS from lego's. Then someone chimed in and said they have GD lego's (and they do). The funny part is the Bob Weir lego figure must have been modeled from the 1984 bobby. He is sporting shorts so short to wear them outside runs the risk of putting your name on the sex offenders registry. Its pretty funny.. and any of us that saw some shows in the 80's remembers the short/shorts... Someone has a cruel sense of humor. Dead Lego's

I've seen those before and they are cool. They are only moc's though. I would love to see an official licensed Lego set of the Wall of Sound. It could look similar to the Big Bang Theory set in size and scope that came out recently. If an official set came out the minifigures of the band would be much more detailed. Waiting for the ship date of this boxzilla sort of reminds me of August / September / October 1989 when we first learned the news of the new GD album, Built To Last. I was psyched to hear the news that it would be released October 31st. I don't remember when I heard the title of the new album or when I first heard that the release date would be 10/31, but the time flew fast, and that day came. I was working at a delivery job driving a van and I stopped at a record store and bought a copy of the new CD. I didn't have a CD player in the van and we didn't have stereo system at the shop, so I just had to wait those hours until I got home. At home I opened the package and put on the new CD on on my stereo. At first listen thru, I liked it very much - it was great! Let me back up a bit, I hadn't been to a Dead show since 9/18/87 @ Madison Square Garden in NYC. (yep, this show is included in boxzilla) The scene had changed a bit, for the worse, because of In The Dark, in my humble opinion. So I sort of didn't really like going to shows as much as I once did. For several plays I thought this album was great, then things changed and I wasn't overwhelmed with it as much and I just didn't play it as much. I use it today as a sort of thermometer. When the whole thing sounds great, I'm happy, when Little Light, Blow Away, We Can Run, Picasso Moon sound horrible, I'm in a bad mood, depressed. However, Victim & Standing are always great to hear, especially when I'm depressed. Sometimes they're mood changers. Bottom line: October 31st. Will you have 30 Trips Around The Sun, aka boxzilla, in you possession on 10/31 or will you be waiting on delivery? Awaiting "The Shipping Notice."

Samson and Delilah is the common link to this Double Dose. Both highlights are 2nd set goodness.. From the 1976 Samson and Delilah leads way into a very spacey HSF.. The bit before Samson is no slouch.. Some nice licks from Captain Trips in "Gimme Some Lovin" making way for a high power China > Rider with a transition into Samson and Delilah.,, a short moment to realign, with Terrapin Station up next and Garcia is all over this one,, slowly melting into Drums. Bring on More Official Releases from June 1976 and September 1987 !!!

...yep, I have Lego Jerry complete with (I believe) Rosebud, there's a little sticker there. Its pretty good. Hey 'Ridin', that you too are an avid Star Wars Lego guy is pretty cool. I've also got the Indiana Jones boulder escape set, its awesome. Has all of the traps from his hasty exit, Idol under arm. I digress and apologize for even writing the word LEgo but hey fun things come in packages with other fun things it seems.

Tastebud?

Gotta admit, I was not up to speed on Tastebud from the '66 show, but yow, what a great tune! The overall excellent sound quality of the streamed material bodes well for the actual release. It's starting to sink in how these shows represent the "best of" from each year, but more than that, when taken as a whole collection, they're like time markers, clearly showing the evolution of the band through the years. (I know, duh) The more I listen, the more anxious I get to actually have these discs in my home. It seems like its been forever since I ordered this sucker!

The haunting jam out of space was Handsome Cabin Boy (with a Playin' tease coda). I was at that one, my friend Matt spotted them setting up the extra mic during the break and we wondered who the guest was going to be.... Bob cleared that up for us in short order. When they launched into China Cat after Gimme Some Lovin', it was like the 2nd set restarting "properly" and so it felt like getting a bonus song. The next year during summer tour, we picked up a head hitching to the next show, and he was still angry about how Bob "ordered" us to "say 'Thank you, Spencer!'" after that Gimme Some Lovin. Guess I'd been too naïve to realize how tough we deadheads had it, getting subjected to a guest musician, an extra song, and such audacious demands from Bob....

Netflix and The Other One

So I joined with Netflix as they offer a free month to start and admit I must I wanted to see the new Keith movie. It was cool, but I found the Bob Weir show The Other One, which I totally enjoyed. Saw a Harry Nillson show that I'll catch soon. Slowly but surely I'm getting dragged further into the digital universe.

Happy Birthday Wissinomingdeadhead! Hope it is a truly epic day. Jim Jim Jim, I was counting on you making it till the end. That is what I meant about people keep Shrining on Me. Will I be the only one that makes to the end and win the "contest?" Everyday it gets harder not to stream. As far as Legos, I was flipping channels this morning and a financial channel was showing a documentary on Legos. I did not watch but it seems the jist was that a new CEO came along and revamped the company. I am guessing that is why all the cool Star Wars and other kits came out?

Great idea on the Baker! I will add that to my list. There is also one on the wrecking crew and Greenwich village folk scene in the 60's which look good.It's English football day to start with and May 77 Lakeland on the sound system. I love soccer with music rather than commentary! Sounds like a good day for everyone, which should be the norm.

Wrecking crew is good, Muscle Shoals is good too and they a small bleep on Donna Jean in that one as well. I finished Keith Richards piece last night. It was pretty good. Speaking of Keith, Jerry and Poodling.. I thought for a minute Keith was wearing a Garcia shirt at one point in the film (similar to the one Steve Parish is wearing at Veneta '72). Its in the part where he talks about Reggae and living in Jamaica circa '73 or so. They cut to old film footage of Keith jammin' and partying and he is wearing a shirt that has a very Garcia like t-shirt. ..but could be some sort of rasta creature with Jerry glasses as well, hard to tell on 40 year old grainy footage. Perhaps Keith is a secret, closet dead head.

I'm with you on the release of 9/26/91. Definitely among the all time greatest shows from a tour that was uniformly great from the 9/4-6/91 Richfield run to the Boston Run. Certainly a release worthy tour. I listened to Dicks Picks 17 9/25/91 last night and love this show. I've had it since it's initial release, but for some reason or another, neglected this show. Awesome from start to finish. Fall '91 was the peak of the Bruce/Vince era and among the last where Jerry was fully engaged and inspired every single night. The last great peak.

Let's hear it for Cobo!!....

....streaming the second set now. Once again, NOT disappointed. These 30 Trips picks rock! The Wheel->Good Lovin' is pure magic. First Good Lovin' since 10.20.74, and that one was the first since the Europe '72 tour with Pig. Funny, my treasured DeadBase 50 doesn't footnote the Cobo version. I guess it was due to the fact that it was only a 40 show gap, but yet it was almost two years. The next one was the New Years Cow Palace one, (and I looove that version!). Unlike Jiminmd, I am streaming the shit out of these....I guess my tolerance is not as strong. But beware Jim, that SLC '95 show is not to be underestimated....but I guess you probably already figured that out....as Private Pyle would say, "Surprise, surprise, surprise!".... ...the Cobo Comes A Time just segued into a romping Dancin'. God, I love this band.... ...Cobo was the last gig until my treasured Day On The Green shows in Oakland. One of my top three Dick's....get some!!!....

..what exactly are you saying, vguy.. that '95 is a gateway show and its only a matter of time that I hit the hard stuff? mmm... will power. I am NOT hitting anything between '66 and '91 until the crate is sitting comfortably on my front porch. How does that song go, Just Like Tom's Thumb Drive Blues? "I started out streaming '95 and then then I soon hit the harder stuff." So far I have stopped at '95. Just a taste.. I couldn't watch all you people having so much fun and not join in the party. Alright.. back to my weekend. Have fun all.
