    Tape Trade Policy

I posted this in the taper forum, but thought this may be the better spot (also, patience is not a virtue of mine). I am sure this exists in written form somewhere, I just can't seem to find it.

What is the official band policy for trading in shows that have been officially released? Specifically, I am wondering about the ones that were released officially but are out of print. Seems to me that if they are not for sale currently, we would not be costing the band money by trading those shows. In fact, the only folks it would cost are those selling the out of print releases at a profit on the secondary market. Just curious what the official policy is on this considering the volume of official releases these days.

Yes. I suspect Pig was resting from his short reunion tour with the band in December '71 and fortifying his commitment to sobriety in what had to have been an unfathomably difficult lifestyle change (if not in terms of medical necessity, then certainly in practice).

"Ace" was recorded from January - March '72, but recall that Pig's alcohol-related health problems forced a touring hiatus in August '71 that culminated with hospitalization in September for bleeding ulcers, hepatitis, and spleen problems. He was only able to rejoin the Dead beginning early December in Boston, at which time I recall Phil describing Ron as shockingly frail in his book. Not surprisingly, Pig's contributions are limited, and while progressively more energetic throughout the month (at least to my ears), they are still anemic by historical standards; though by NYE he sounds beat.

In retrospect, it's a miracle that the Dead community (once and future) got Pig back in functional form for the brilliantly recorded European tour, especially given how quickly he dropped off radar for related health problems afterward.

EDIT: And yes, "sabbatical" serves as a neat and entirely appropriate bit of shorthand in conversation among those who know....

essentially it was a dead album with everyone on board contributing except for Micky who was on a sabbatical, (as i see it) and Pig, why wasnt Pig contributing? was he too sick at the time?

    RE: NYE '69

CC, your post invites a bit of confusion by suggesting that you saw both the Dead and TSOC on the same NYE bill at Winterland in '69; though 50 years is an understandably long time. It's hard to imagine, but the Dead were not playing on a West Coast home field that December 31st, and were rather in the midst of an odd eastbound triptik that took them to Dallas on 12/26, Hollywood (FL) on 12/28, and the Boston Tea Party on 12/29-30, while closing out at the Fillmore East on 1/2-3/70.

Indeed, the '69 NYE playbill on the poster you linked does not name the Dead. So TSOC and the GoGD were on opposite coasts at the decade's close. In any event, here's a link to a CM SBD for the Dead's '69 NYE show:
    https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1969/12/31?source=87994

Incidentally, I couldn't find a poster for Boston NYE, but here's one from the night before (it would appear the promo dept. missed the spirit of the "grateful" dead; you'd think an impossibly early incarnation of Maiden was playing that night!):
    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YQBsfGwVEeo/TUSkqEWWy3I/AAAAAAAARQs/qRvbGdWK_…

However, you are correct that the Dead played NYE '70 at Winterland, but, consistent with the playbill cited in Deadbase50, the following promo poster does not show TSOC on the same stage, but rather NRPS, "assorted friends" (apparently Hot Tuna), and Stoneground (note also, "lights by Little Princess 109").
    https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/8448089/il_570xN.542921874_q4nc.jpg

Checking Deadbase, here's a link to what seems the complete NYE '70 show; however, it appears to be mix of AUD and FM broadcast that provides poor sound quality through Cumberland (even so, the Truckin' opener is well worth a listen), but thankfully improves in time for the set's highlights at Cryptical and China>Rider through close at UJB.
    https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1970/12/31?source=88719

Regardless of which show you attended, either would've been a great way to kick off your own personal attendance record! Got a story?/K

I can not find the 1st GD show I attended anywhere in GD archives. No GD archive lists the same bands that I saw that night, as confirmed by the Sons archive which has the poster from that night:

<<Wednesday, December 31, 1969: '1969 New Years Eve 1970', Winterland 2000 Post Street at Steiner Street, San Francisco, California
The band was billed only as 'The Sons' on the poster printed for this show. Also on the bill: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna. Lights by Brotherhood of Light. This show, from 8:00pm to 8:00am, was promoted by Bill Graham Presents In San Francisco.>>

    limited releases logic explained

Could you please explain the logic of "limited releases" as it applies to an "alternative" business model, such as the grateful dead" The "limited release" model is a concept taken from the good old music biznezz, in order to promote sales, keep prices high, and maintain collector value of limited products.
I "missed" the window for daves pick's 30, a rare release from the year 1970, the first show that I recorded 1/3/70. I was disappointed, but managed to get one on a record/cd selling site. I paid double, but I still saved $$$, as I do not want to purchase a "subscription" to the daves picks yearly releases, as I am primarily interested in obtaining music from the 1966-1970 period, and not many releases are from these years. I guess I could always buy a subscription, and then sell off the unwanted items on another site for a profit, which is what this concept does, encourages a "black market". I do not consider this to be "progressive" in the least. I would rather purchase through GDCORP, as I have in the past, but if GDCORP wants to encourage this type of atmosphere, I am forced to participate in order to get what I want, and I am grateful to the sellers who have made it possible to get what I want. But it sure seems contrary to what Jerry's idea of business was.

The fan photos that are (sometimes) getting uploaded and approved, but never appearing. Still working on this. The even worse problem of posts mysteriously disappearing: we think we're narrowing it down, but meanwhile, please, DO NOT POST YOUR ONLY COPY OF SOMETHING GREAT HERE. It may vanish for no reason, and it ain't the mods. We know the problem exists; we haven't solved it yet. Thank you for your continued patience...

I do not see this show listed anywhere on this sight. The show with NRPS was at the Fieldhouse in Iowa City,Ia.Ticket prices,$2.50.$3.00,$3.50. I remember the Riders came out at 7:30 and the Dead left the stage at almost 1am. My first show.

No, doesn't require an iPod, and the iTunes software has Mac and PC versions. You can play the music, burn CDs, etc. and never use an iPod at all. I used it for years before I bit the bullet and bought the iPod, and boy did I look silly sitting in the airport listening to tunes on my iBook... The more audiophile among us think there may be better audio formats than the one iTunes uses, so you may want to wait for them to weigh in here. (Or ask over in the Technical Discussion topic in Tapers.)

Thanks for the info. It just seems foolish to me that the Download Series is no longer available, hopefully it is short term and will return. Ratdog, Gov't Mule, Phish, Widespread Panic, and many more all have downloads for sale on their sites, seems like it would be purely a cost effective profit maker as there is no hard product to manufacture, ship, etc. I saw a posting on here the other day by someone that said "alot of Heads he knew are in fact dead", given that statement and the fact that we all are getting older, common sense would tell you that there are less of us today than there was 10 years ago, the longer it takes to get the music out there, the fewer sales there ultimately will be. Don't get me wrong, I am ecstatic every time a new archive release comes out like Three from the Vault, and I do purchase them all, but it should have come out years ago. (Don't get me started on the JGB stuff!) I realize it takes time to remaster stuff, and there is no way to do this every piece of tape in the vault, but it doesn't matter that every show is sonically perfect, the demand is there. If you take look at the Internet Archive at http://www.archive.org/details/GratefulDead and see how many times each show has been downloaded, this proves my point and if they charged a fee to download from there instead of allowing just the streams, that would be a hell of alot income for the band and its staff. Yes I agree the old philosophy that the music is "free" doesn't apply anymore, but it would make alot of people happy if they just made it available. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Okay, the first paragraph in the current Tapers Section that has a link is this: "Our first selection is from 7/3/69 in Colorado Springs, and features the best He Was A Friend of Mine (MP3 18.41MB) these ears have ever heard. Please note that is drawn from the cassette master, as this tour was recorded only to cassette and not to reels, so it does sound a little hissy, but this rendition is so darn good, it’s easy to overlook the minor sound issues." In the actual text, "He Was A Friend of Mine" is a link. Position your cursor strategically on said link, hold down the control key, and hold down the mouse button. A pop-up menu will offer you various options, including Play Song in iTunes and Download Linked File. Choose the option you prefer. Should you choose iTunes, it will probably think about it for a bit and then start playing the tune. Should you choose Download, your download window will open and you should be able to monitor the file's progress and then play in in the app of your choice. Including iTunes. Hope this helps. If it doesn't, speak up!

Unkljohn, the photo upload got broken on a server migration a week or so back and is on the short list to be fixed. It's not you, TMOT. Chubbycat, the short version is that on this site only mods (i.e. izzie and me) can start topics. As to other sites, DNC works the same way, the Ratdog site lets you start topics to your heart's content, etc. We don't think this is the One True Path, but for the moment it's what fits the software limitations and other issues here. If you want a topic on a particular subject, you're heartily encouraged to post in the What Else Should We Be Talking About topic, or send a PM to izzie or me. We're generally pretty responsive, at least I hope we are. Thanks!

Check the FAQs; we will announce it when the thing is fixed, believe me. As far as the map goes, it's a Google Map kind of deal, so any difficulties you're having are Google rather than dead.net. However, we have noted with U.S. addresses that it needs an exact street address before it will mark you on the map. If you've done this and you're still having trouble, please speak up. As to your missing post, I'm at a loss. It's not in the spam queue and it's not in the topic. Something has clearly malfunctioned, and I'm sorry. Please post again if you'd be so kind. Thanks! The fan photos are moderated, so they're not immediately accessible when you upload them. (This is mostly to head off such things as the uploading of, say, Jim Marshall's photos by people other than Jim Marshall.) If the problem persists, we're dealing with something else, so speak up... Thanks!

...shall we go, you and I while we can... This place has been here for six weeks or so and I'm seeing the complaints outweighing the compliments about two to one . Izzie and Marye got tossed into a definite work in progress. They were honest about that from day one. Look, If the Grateful Dead experienced that much negativity at the beginning when things didn't work right, the music was sloppy, the venue sucked,, we wouldn't be hear today, 'cause the band would have called it quits. The initial scene thrived on what was going right and how to build on it.Let's try that here. See 'cause how many times do people need to hear that the store isn't fully connected with the site, that opening new topics isn't gonna happen in the forums, etc. There's a lot of arch tone and unnecessary sarcasm that's well, frankly juvenile. Wheather it was Watkins Glen Or the Berkely Community center, Woodstock or Anchorage, Alaska, I always saw the faithful in the audience adapt to the situation with the same smile, ,cause they knew something great was about to happen. The same thing can be true here. After all, what do we really want, lindley Meadows or Altamont??? Give it some thought, and sure if you got a gripe, you can always express it in a pleasent manner. Be sure to say something nice along the way as well, it will come back to you.

Would probably help if people read through the posts in the sections about technical problems BEFORE they post new complaints. If problem has already been brought up, then would be kinder NOT to be repetitive and post, or if the person absolutely can't help themselves, then to say something very mild like: "XYZ problem, ditto" or "me too". izzie and Marye have said they will keep us informed on fixes and updates, and they WILL. They are doing a great job, with a monumental task, and no need to stress them with the s.o.s. over and over.

I am using Mozilla as a browser. Whole column under the cursive text "dead community" is just a black box. Can see no individual text in the box, other than the who's online text. Also cannot click on anything in this black field. Happens about 30% of the times that I log in. Also happens that if I log out, close Mozilla, and then log back in, all text and functions are back. Seems to be a temporary black hole or something-I have no clue what it could be. Was wondering if I were the only one with this, as I took my own advice and looked for someone else asking about this before I posted ;-)
