I was at the NYE show and one thing that was lacking through a lot of the midnight set was vocals. Jackie Greene can sing, but he doesn't sing the Dead songs with the sole they deserve. My dream would be for John Kadlecik to sing with the Dead. Here's what Bob had to say after playing with DSO: "A couple of times when I had my back to John onstage and he started to sing, I had this weird sense that it was Jerry." Nobody will ever replace Jerry. But that's quite an endorsement. And I agree. Close your eyes and listen to John Kadlecik and you just might believe you're listening to Jerry. I don't have much hope that Kadlecik will ever tour with the Dead. I think Warren Haynes is a good choice. He does have a great voice. Regardless of who sings what, I plan on having a great time. I'm just happy the guys are getting together for a tour. It was so cool to walk out of the NYE show and be handed a flyer announcing the tour. What a way to top off the night!

I think after Jerry died it would have been a gracious nod to the Grateful Dead legacy to leave Jerry's work alone and explore new space and time with other idea's and new musical arrangement only involving current band members songs and maybe a few new songs

The idea of new songs as The Dead wouldn't be half bad. I wouldn't mind hearing a few new songs as long as they played alot of originals. Hmmmmm.... I wonder....Phatmoye

It's fun to have a FRIENDLY debate! Heck why not have Jackie Greene sing (and play guitar). He sings the songs like they should be sung and I don't know I kind of like him .. maybe .. just a little. :-) "But I'll get back, On my feet some day. The good Lord willing, If he says I may. I know that the life, I'm living's no good. I'll get a new start, Live the life I should."

I agree with alot thats being said about certain Jerry songs Weir should'nt sing, but he does add his own flavor to them.I mean he's not gonna sound like Jerry no matter what!(Nor should he try to)I think we are so used to Jerry's voice and accent's and style on those songs that ANYBODY but Jerry singing them is gonna sound weird to us. So maybe we should just be happy to still be hearing these songs live AT ALL!!! (It's all good,baby-dont sweat the little details)As far as all this"Let Phil sing"crap-The man is genius musician but let's be serious,people-his singing SUCKS!! Sorry-But the truth hurts.♪♪♪"Everybody's dancing in a ring around the sun-Nobody's finished--We aint even begun!!"♪♪♪

This thread got us ruminating over the crazy idea of a show of all new Dead material - songs we've never heard before. Most bands go on tour to promote a new album - could you imagine such a thing???

Yeah bro I know what you are saying, Jerry's voice is impossible to replace. The first time I saw Ratdog I was skeptical about Bob singing Jerry tunes too but once I heard him I was totally fine with it. I have a problem with someone like Warren coming in and singing songs with his own spin on it. Like he'll add a couple extra words or leave out some and I don't overly like his voice. Now if Crosby sang say Wharfrat it would sound nothing like we've ever heard. It may even be the best version know what I mean? If you have a voice like Crosby you can sing anything and make it sound better! Looking forward to seeing how adding Branford in the mix ends up sounding.Wished they would have had more guests for more of the shows. Maybe some surprises still to come, as they are only at mid-point of their tour? One can hope!!!

Hey Sway714 check out the pretour page click on the venue and David Lemieux is giving a song by song review of the show. David even updates the page as the concert plays so you can see the songs they have played before the show is over. Great job Dave keep it coming....

Was awesome, they didn't stream the show live, but they played the first set...which sounded like it was tearin the roof off NJ! Last night's first set rocked, was simply amazing....ENDING it in Lovelight....and this one had the energy of a freight train! It was pretty funny that in my home in Chicago, only 5 dayz! I was sitting here on my computer chair dancing, singing, twirling was chattin with other heads, and dancing and singing...Oh the computer age of Deadness. Everyone on that chatroom was amazing buzzed from the show. Wow, I thought, could this be the first time you've seen the boyz since 2004? WHOA, It's some pretty crazy stuff to think How awesome this tour is and I can't wait for May 4,5! I'm thinking you may as well just finish out the tour. Monkey, depends on how far your willin to drive. Big Basin Redwoods SP is the shit but quite a ways south towards santa cruz near boulder creek. Portola redwwods SP is a little closer but still a ways south. It's somewhat near skyline blvd (ca 35). I've camped out there while seeing a couple ratdog shows in san jose last summer. It's a bit of a drive, especially fryin but worth it. Theres a place called anthony chabot regional park in castro valley on the east bay. I haven't been there but it's much closer to mountain view than the redwoods and I might also try camping there after the show. I highly reccomend Big Basin though if you don't mind driving. It's one of my favorite places anywhere.

I haven't heard about a June show with Dylan, Willie, Mellencamp, etc. but it's plausible. Dylan, Willie, the Dead and dozens of other bands are convening in MI the first week of July for the Rothbury festival, so some/all of those guys will be "in the area" 'bout that time. Try checking their websites. Since I'm catching only the two Spectrum shows on the spring tour, I broke down recently and picked up tickets for Rothbury (rothburyfestival.com). The boys headline Sat night 7/4 (anyone willing to take odds on a US Blues encore?) and Dylan's the main act on the final night, Sun 7/5. Gotta see the boys one more time!

Now that I've actually attended a couple more shows, instead of just listening to them, thought I might make some observations. They definitely seem to be improving a bit with each show, and with the high baseline they set at the taxi tour shows this has made for a quite pleasurable experience. It is important to remember that this is The Dead, not the GOGD, and it is an evolution in perspective, practice and content. I also saw the 02, 03 and 04 incarnations and where they are now is better than any of those were. I have seen several others comment on one aspect that I find I must agree with, and that is that Warren just isn't loud enough often enough. Jerry would regularly play extremely loud, and that dimension (the loudness, not the particular notes or progressions) is just not present consistently. It's the thing that's holding back those crescendo points from ever really peaking the way they used to. Hopefully they'll figure that out, because most of what Warren is playing is quite good and fits well. Only the occasional spot of "there's that Allman Brothers thing again." Interestingly enough, they did have the good sense to mix Branford hot at times when he was really channeling Jerry. Listen to the Crazy Fingers from 4/29 for a good example. And throwing a meatball like Milestones straight into his wheelhouse, no surprise he hit that out of the park. I'm really glad I got to see the Branford shows because he really did fit in quite well, and was obviously having a great time being there. At points where he wasn't playing he was bopping and dancing right along. The onstage rapport and communication between all the band members seems really high and is certainly fun to watch. They are all quite clearly having a great time with it. Likewise Jeff is fitting right in as well, really kicking it up a notch where appropriate, otherwise providing a great deal of cohesion. Never obtrusive, always tasteful, and obviously an essential ingredient in the mix. It is good that Bob's guitar is more prominent because he is playing quite well despite the occasional equipment issue. He really is a much better guitar player than some people seem to think. I'll chalk up the "updated" vocal timings to "improvisation." Who ever said voice isn't an instrument anyway? And a show just isn't a show without a booted lyric somewhere, right? Phil just seems to never stop smiling, enough so that if you didn't know better you might be tempted to wonder if there wasn't some other reason why. But I'm pretty sure the reason is because he's just having a ball, and he's certainly playing like there's nothing else he'd rather do ever. I'm also happy to see and hear him singing more. I really don't get why some people have an issue with this. Is he Mel Torme, SInatra, Robert Plant? Hell no, he's Phil Lesh, and they're his songs. If he wants to sing them who the hell is anyone else to say no? How many times in the 70's did my friends and I stand in front of him yelling Unbroken Chain? Every show? Don't have to do that any more. Mickey and Billy are really, really on as others have noted. Both nights during Drums there were points where my chest was actually vibrating and my pant legs were flapping. Now if they would only learn to mix Warren that hot where appropriate... All in all, I am happy to have been able to be present where great music was being created, rather than merely replicated, and I'm really looking forward to Friday night. Any one else interested in that opportunity should get themselves to one of these shows. The only possible bad time is one that you might bring along, so do yourself a favor and don't bring one. Go expecting something new yet very familiar, and you will be rewarded. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

Get to rest up before the next 2 daze! Need it after the Izod shows. Very little sleep in the last couple days, have great memories, and am anxiously awaiting the next 2 shows!Shakedown continues to be risky with those peddling hippie drugs,in that there seems to be more then usual that will sell you something that is not as it is claimed to be. Be careful about the scams, they are skilled in getting you to part with your money. Otherwise, if you can catch a show or more, GO...and have a blast in whatever manner tickles your fancy! Grate to have them back on the road playing together again!!!

Dude, I must have done something really nice in my life time....the karma has come my way for Chicago's Cinco De Mayo celebration! 5/4 is gonna rock no doubt, getting to see all you crazy family members again and shakin my bones. I lucked out big time....just talked to my Buddy last night....he said, "Oh yeah, you remember me talking about luxury box seats for the Dead? I said, "Does a bear sh*t in the woods?" "Well my dad's company doesn't want them and he knew how much you love The Dead, you want to go on 5/5?" I think I almost fell down, but I mustered up enough strength to say, "Hell Yeah!" Needless to say, tis going to rock. And I can't wait to miracle two lucky heads and watch them smile from ear to ear! i wanted to see some east coast shows but needed work, but i am going to the last 5 showsdenver, L A, 2 shorline, and the gorge in george, WA. i've seen orig dead, further dead, the other ones dead, the tribute dead in berkley, w/ trey, bruce, and merl, the new dead, ratdog, phil & friends, planet drum, and its truly the greatest story ever told, passenger, only one in ten thousand come for the show. the music is a living thing evolving, the shows become live art, the important thing to remember is why you came to the show, to just watch, or be a part of the art. the indoor shows have more reverb, but outdoor at shoreline, and the gorge, make it unreal with the colors of the sunset. i hope some of you easties get out for these shows the gorge camping is spendie but the shakedown is the best i've seen in years, 2004 was the 4th of july and was a sight. see ya on the road or at the show no-one noticed that the band was all packed and gone were they ever here at all, and they kept on dancing...... the music never stopped
