We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

First, great list of segments there Lebowski...good choices. Wissinoming - thanks for sharing that, I enjoyed your breakdown of 30 Trips. I can answer at least a couple of your "why not" questions: 9/19/70 (basically all of Fall 70) is not in the Vault. Likewise, no 11/19/72 in the Vault (lots of the Fall 72 stuff is missing too). One of my all-time favorite shows, with a Top Five Dark Star, is 11/13/72, but that is not only missing from the Vault, it was not recorded at all at the soundboard. Thank God for Owsley making an audience tape of that one! Muleskinner, great stuff. The Dean of my department (and his wife) are Larry Campbell Heads - I mean, they are as devoted to LC as we are to the Dead. They took me to a Ramble a few years back, it was a peak life experience. Levon's band with LC was obviously great, also Taj Mahal, and Jim Lauderdale. Of course all in Levon's barn, about ten feet from the "stage." At the poluck during a break, I was standing next to this kind of square looking dude (like me!) in his 60s wearing shorts, sandals with socks... nice guy, we chatted about how good the salad was and stuff like that - "oh yeah, try the taboule!". Later he's introduced and brought up to sing some songs - it was John Sebastion! Good thing I did not recognize him as we were thus able to have a normal conversation, ha! Anyway, that's my Ramble story.

Glad to see others feeling the love for the 6-8-74 Playin! I need to listen to the rest of that show again soon. However, with my girlfriend gone for the week, I spent the last couple of nights baked and queing up choice nuggets from nearly all 30 years--at least most from 69 to 91. Tried to minimize repeats, and focus on what I enjoy most from each year, but here's how it went: 3/17/68 Other One>New Potato>China Cat>Eleven>Caution>Feedback 12/12/69 Uncle John's>He Was a Friend 6/24/70 NFA>Easy Wind, Dark Star>Attics>Dark Star>Sugar Mag>Dark Star>St. Stephen (rough audience tape, but the music...) 4/18/70 Cumberland, New Speedway 2/19/71 Smokestack 8/6/71 Hard to Handle(obvious choice, but never fails to slay me. 4/24/72 NFA>GDTR>NFA 2/17/73 1/2 Step, Truckin>Eyes 6/8/74 Playin>Wharf Rat>Playin 6/17/75 Help>Slip>Franklin's 6/9/76 Mission in the Rain (not from this date, but on Road Trips--too lazy to look it up.) 5/9/77 Peggy-O, Music Never Stopped (too bad for the patch in MNS, cause that's a smoker.) 12/31/78 FOTD 12/1/79 He's Gone>Gloria Jam>CC Rider (a little Weir cheese, but I have a tolerance for that...) 11/30/80 Scarlet Fire 10/10/82 Space>Wheel>Throwing Stones>NFA>Black Peter (The jam in Throwing Stones is really interesting and the Space/Wheel is so delicate. 9/2/83 Baby Blue 3/31/85 Post China Doll Jam>Drums (China Doll is a wreck, but the post jam? Jerry and the drummers redeem the whole band.) 6/30/85 Shakedown (obvious, I know, but this version never stops peaking.) 12/30/87 Cassidy--a wild swirling version 4/1/88 To Lay Me Down, Thin Man 12/31/89 Victim>Dark Star>Drums (Say what you want about Victim, but this version and what follows is chaotic and stellar--as long as the MIDI doesn't send you fleeing.) 7/19/90 Jack Straw 5/5/91 Terrapin>Jam (One of my favorites, especially with the post jam.) Usually listen to complete shows, but this was a fun way to go. How does one band have so much to choose from????

    30 Trips Around the Sun...
Here is an honest assessment of this collection of shows, I will give an honest, open opinion about each show some I'm familiar with some I'm not, however I will let you out here in Deadland the Deal, so here goes an honest show by show analysis. DISCAIMER: MY INTENTION IS TO INFORM NOT TO CREATE A CONTROVERSY, WE CAN AGREE OR DISAGREE ON MY ASSESSMENT OF THIS BOX SET, HOWEVER I JUST WANT TO BE A HELP TO THOSE WHO ARE ON THE FENCE SO TO SPEAK ABOUT THE PURCHASE OF THIS BOX SET, AS I FEEL IT'S VERY MUCH WORTH PURCHASING!!!!!!!!!!!! 1966, 7/3, I am familiar with this show, I thought 5/19 would've been the obvious choice, however with that said this is a GOOD choice. 1967, 11/10, A GOOD choice an excellent example of "primal Dead". 1968, 10/20, now this show is a GREAT choice for years I stayed primarily with the Pac-North Tour in January & February. I just started venturing thru other shows from '68 so yes this is 30 Trips worthy. 1969. 2/22, Another GOOD choice however I would've preferred, 4/5 or 4/21 however 2/22 is release worthy. 1970 4/15, why not 9/19 or 11/8? It's a GOOD choice though worthy of the price of admission. 1971, 3/18, NEVER listened to this one....yet, again, why not 12/5? I'm looking forward to hearing this one for the FIRST time in September, can't give an honest opinion so let's just trust, DL's opinion on this one. 1972, 9/24, SEPTEMBER 1972, ENOUGH SAID, however I was expecting them to go with 11/19 just because of DP 11 & RSD 11/18 but I'm NOT complaining GREAT choice. 1973,11/14, To obvious for me only because of Winterland '73 & DP 5 11/17, I was hoping they'd go with a "different' era of 1973, like 12/18 with that being said you can't go wrong with this one an EXCELLENT choice. 1974, 9/18, Europe '74 a GOOD choice as I feel this tour is somewhat of underrated. 1975,9/28, what else could they have gone with? Now the logical thing to do though is release 6/17 & COMPLETE 1975. 1976, 10/3, another GOOD choice from an underrated year, even though I would've like to see 7/17 or 7/18 released, 10/3 is worthy of release. 1977, 4/25, why couldn't they go with the 'other" tour, Fall, 1977 however this is an EXCELLENT choice Spring '77 SAY NO MORE!!! 1978, 5/14 why not 11/24? However a GOOD choice. 1979, 10/27 The reason I paid 699.98 PLUS $58.10 PA Sales Tax was for this the HOLY GRAIL of 1979, an EXCELLENT choice. 1980, 11/28, The only way I can justify this one is if 11/29 gets released & COMPLETES the short Florida, Georgia Tour of November 1980, however why not 5/10 or 10/14, so let's say this is a GOOD choice. 1981, 5/16, The "other" Cornell, an EXCELLENT choice. 1982, 7/31, A GOOD choice however I'd like to see 10/10 get released one day. 1983,10/21, An EXCELLENT choice indeed. 1984, 10/12, An EXCELLENT choice it's either 4/21, 10/12 or 11/2 any one of these 3 is release worthy. 1985, 6/24, A GOOD choice however I was hoping 6/28 would've been the show for '85 however this is worthy of release 1986,5/3, A GOOD choice, I'm glad to see they didn't go with 12/15 just because it would've been the obvious choice, maybe someday we'll see 3/24 get released. 1987, 9/18 An EXCELLENT choice, La Bamba, indeed!!! 1988, 7/3 A GOOD choice however why not 7/29? Just sayin.... 1989,10/26 An EXCELLENT choice, I call this show "ANGRY DEAD"!!!! Another show I've been rallying for to see the "light" of day. 1990,10/27, A GOOD choice however why not 11/1? 1991, 9/10, A GOOD choice however a tad to obvious for me, we already have the "holy grail" of Dead & Branford (3/29/90) I really would've like to see 6/22 or ESPECIALLY 9/26 the show in this writer's opinion IS 1991!! 1992, 3/20, A GOOD choice however why not 6/20? Again, just sayin..... 1993,3/27, A GOOD choice, IMO though if they're going with March 1993, why not 3/17 or 3/24? 1994, 10/1, An EXCELLENT choice in fact most of October 1994, is worthy of release. 1995, 2/21, A GOOD choice, though I would've liked to see 6/21 released however 2/21 is worthy of release. So there you have my HONEST feelings on EVERY show in '30 Trips, the most important thing I can say is in this long time Deadheads opinion is I'm glad I was able to preorder one as this collection is NEVER going to be duplicated & it is investment worthy. The other thing to consider is EVERY show in this box set is a HIT with no misses, even the shows I'm not familiar with I know are going to be good just because they were chosen especially for this release. Yes DEADLAND IMHO it's worth shelling out the $699.98+ I'm glad I was able to preorder BEFORE it SELLS OUT as "secondary" prices for the box set or individual shows on the "secondary" market will be outrageous!!!!!! HAPPY SUNDAY, DEADLAND!!!!!!

I hope this is useful for some out there. Recently I suggested that HDCD playback required playing back the actual CD (or as has been mentioned by others, decoding to a 24 bit file using hdcd.exe). I think that I was mistaken, although this is highly dependent on hardware and software set up. I'm not quite finished looking into this, but so far - using iTunes on a Mac (don't know about the Windows version), going into an HDCD compliant DAC, you will get the full HDCD quality provided that the entire software chain is set to exactly 44.1/16 bits (in audio midi setup.app), no normalization (called "sound check" in Apple gobbledy gook) or equalization whatsoever, and the volume controls all set to 100% (unity), no attenuation, no boost in both iTunes and in the "Sound Preferences", and no upsampling from third party software or any other modification. The mac will then pass a "bit perfect" signal (including the encrypted encoding information) to the HDCD enable DAC or playback device. This also works for dts multi-channel audio going to a digital playback device with dts decoding. I tested this with an iMac, OS 10.11, iTunes 12.3.0 connected via HDMI to an Oppo 105D playback device. I'm sure it will work with any DAC or playback device using the USB input. I doubt it will work via toslink (optical). In case this isn't obvious, the files must be in a compatible lossless format, for Mac, ALAC, WAV, AIF; in the case of a direct connection to the device (directly connected flash/HDD), uncompressed AIF or WAV (preferable in any case).

Hey Ziffle - Does an HDCD indicator illuminate on the Oppo when you pass a bit-perfect stream through the player via USB? I had contacted Oppo about a year ago to see if this was possible (if so I was going to buy a player straight away) and they said that the HDCD chip only decoded a stream directly from the CD transport and not through a stream, but that the were working on changing this. I haven't noticed any indication that this was changed with any of the firmware updates. If you are certain that HDCD is decoded via USB, I wonder if it is decoded using DNLA as well from a NAS. And for anyone else out there with an Oppo 103, I wonder if they can stream and decode HDCD. At the moment I have all my HDCD Dead decoded using hdcd.exe and would much rather maintain it as 16 bit CD rips of uninterrupted concerts that decode on my stereo. Any info people can provide would be a huge help!!

I keep trying the Brent stuff. I streamed the 30 Trips Scarlet Begonias. His backup vocals are just wretched. Donna sounded so much better on 90% of what she sang on. I can't stand her on Playing and some of the early renditions of Scarlet (1974) when she was just crooning on top of everyone, and sure, there are other moments when she sounds bad (but not worse than anyone else); but by-and-large she was a pleasant and indispensable element of their sound in those years. I get that the band needed a change, but really they should have taken off a year, sobered up, and worked it out with the Godchauxs. Or at a minimum they should have kept Brent off vocals (then we'd only be stuck with the Styx "because it's you babe" keyboard sound effects). I think a sober Jerry and Co would have passed on this guy. I know, all of the 80s fans are going to say "but Jerry loved playing with him"; means nothing as far as the band's sound goes. Jerry loved heroin too, but that didn't make it good for him or the Grateful Dead. I wouldn't say this version of the band doesn't hold a candle to the 70s, but it's more like they're holding a candle at half open door in the dark, looking in at their former selves. It's no mystery why there's a greater demand for the 70s.

I won't take the fun out of enjoying the music until the box arrives. I also find it easier to read the physical book than to read online and scroll up and down, left and right.I had my fun streaming shows from this box, 1967, '68 and the 2nd set of 2/21/95. I also streamed some individual songs here and there with particular attention to the 10/12/84 Dew. I never had a copy of this show before, and I was asked if there was an audience patch in there, and there was, so I confirmed the bad news for someone who isn't getting the box - just wanted a few shows. Right now, I won't listen to any Dead until the box arrives, so everything sounds new and fresh and also very familiar. Sort of freshening my mind up. It works for me.

Rap is decadent preaches no morality...the greateful sang of great moral standing...take jack straw for example...I heard rap and I get violence abuse of women and it's basically music by tone deaf people who sample written songs...I knew rappers they got on labels while the real musicians didn't...and I have a problem with the ethics of that...I heard A&R reject non-rap based on they were non-rap...sorry rap is the only thing that's selling now...I really shiver when I think of rap...whatever happened to black culture they went from Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix....to what Dr Dre? Beyoncé who is basically a homogenized type of singer that sounds like about 20 other girls...do you get my drift? Rap doesn't leave a greatness tag to the name...the people I mentioned were truly great but I don't get that with the current rap...and another thing people aren't buying CDs because they can download them for free they're not buying them because they suck...if anyone here wanted to mail me the latest Justin Bieber CD or Miley Cyrus CD i'd say no thanks...and that's for FREE...rap rap is crap...mindless shit.

StStephen1971, are you the ebayer "thebanditisback" from oz that's selling the individual 30 Trips shows for $50 as well as selling the $700 30 Trips boxset for $1119.64 (plus shipping and handling)?

an email from UPS stating that an item is set to arrive tomorrow between 10am>2pm, could it be..... Does anyone out here in Deadland know who is shipping 30 Trips, USPS,UPS etc? I haven't received a shipping notice from dead.net just an email from UPS with a tracking number. Totally confused as I'm not expecting from UPS. Anyone else out in the DEAD PLAYGROUND receive a similar notice? Warner Music Group Promo is the shipper. The plot thickens the mystery unfolds.

I just got a text saying the same thing! It says it's from Warner Music Group, coming from UPS (although sometimes they offload to USPS - we'll see.)

Yee-haw not Yahooo. Signed The hairy ass hillbilly I have not received any notification but I did state yesterday that I thought this was the week. Can it be, could it be? Your sure you haven't ordered anything else? What part of the world are you from? US Europe?

I just got the same UPS message as well. Unfortunately I leave for a weekend away tomorrow evening but at least the box will be waiting for me when I return.

I'm new to posting here although I've been lurking and reading the comments for a long time. I'm getting sick of seeing the same posts over and over again with one certain person trying to make a profit on the box we're all so excited for. It's not a huge deal but it interrupts the flow of the posts and as I'm reading I'm getting sick of having to pass the same spam over and over again. Take it to ebay...this isn't your personal marketplace.

Have you checked your Order Status page to see if the Box's status has changed from "Backordered" to "Shipped' (or something else)?

My order status still says "Backordered" even though I got a text message that a package will be delivered tomorrow.

Nope, this is the only package I'm expecting, and it would be too much of a coincidence that other people have notices about a package from Warner Music Group. I'm in the U.S. :)

sounds great, can't wait. You must be close to the east coast distribution center? Does all or most ship out of Virginia or North Carolina? Still kind of new to all these steps.

Actually, I'm in one of the great cornfield states! When I check tracking info it says it was originally scanned in Taylor, PA. I Don't think this is where the Dave's Picks ship from but I'm not sure.

I just checked my order and it still says backordered. My shipping notice is from WARNER MUSIC GROUP PROMO and the weight on the package says 16 lbs. I can't imagine what else it would be. I'm in PA which is fairly close to where they ship the DAP from.

That animated cartoon about china ryder is absolutely outrageous. "I married a deadhead." Brilliant. The 68 Columbia video has been around for a while but always was the video of random music from that show's board. Looks like VoodooNola might have finally figured out the right positioning for the synch. Still not sure. I am sure all of you follow Voodoo on youtube. He has constantly placed incredible videos of shows for some time now. g

And soon! I can't wait to read about how many individual shows are not selling. In other news, I will alert my wife to BOLO for the postman the rest of the week. I think an unveiling & listening party this weekend is just the thing! The pantry is already stocked for the occasion.

Most heads have bought a show or two (some have even offered money as donations to help with my op - thanks guys - and you know who you are). This allows heads to get the shows they want without buying the big box and helps me towards a vital op...if enough others say stop the listing i will - otherwise OldeEnglish and One Man - bite me ;) OK guys - a few more went today only a few left - so I'm trying to shift the remaining shows asap. EACH of the following now ONLY $45US per show inc shipping from oz (sent day i get box): SPECIAL deal as im not a fan of 93,94,95 - anyone who wants all 3 only 120US for the 3.... ...and my order status still says backordered. The only thing more annoying here than the negativity, bickering over eras and needless gossip about others behind their backs on facebook fan pages is a guy who posts which shows he wants to sell from his box 50 times a day on every single thread. Nobody wants an incomplete box (those in their right minds anyways). Give it up. You are doing resellers a great disservice, and I'm not even against reselling.

if you use that quaser thing ups has and it says 16 pounds of something it's got to be the box set...now that I think of it the grateful usually send out shipping notices one day after you receive the item...I hope that's the case here...I tell you I know how a girl feels like when she's been raped because that's how I feel through this whole ideal...like a woman who's been raped, I feel defiled, used and abused...i'm sure we all do in some respects over this ordeal.

Just talked to CS @ Dead.net they say my order has not shipped and they know nothing about boxes shipping now/tomorrow. But she did say that it's still possible that boxes have started to ship and they haven't been notified. Hmmm.

Well, at least you keep giving it a shot now and again. No one can really ask more than that, right? As you know, I really love Brent's playing (and singing, actually, although I could do without most the songs he wrote), and I find that very frequently his playing is an integral part what I'm getting off on. I think he was both technically excellent, and more importantly, was great at finding endlessly creative ways of becoming part of the musical conversation going on with the others, and I like that he took the musical lead in that regard, not infrequently. I think he was a perfect match for them at that time - and would dearly like to have heard him with 70's era Dead, except that I wouldn't trade Keith for anything during that time period and I guess you can't have it both ways (oh, and I wouldn't give up Donna either - I not only love her singing, but I think the "Donna wails" in Playing and others was GREAT - something's missing without them.) Your opinion is shared by many (not all, and I'm not sure about most - but that's possible) and I recognize you sincerely feel this way. It also looks like you recognize that, IF you could get off on his playing, there is a ton of stuff you could more thoroughly enjoy in the later years. Like I said, no one can ask more than that you try, and you did, so it is what it is. If I'm not mistaken, there's more than a lifetime's worth of great Dead to get off on without him, so you're doin' pretty ok in that regard, in any case.

These originally came as a set, but I'm finding that some are increasingly burdensome (and, sadly, devalued) with age, while many of you won't have use for others, so I'm parceling out my (1) marbles for $55 (2) youthful idealism for $45 (3) optimism for $25 (4) devastating wit for $15 (5) ravishing good looks for $10 (well, I am a realist at heart...) and, finally, (6) unquestioning commitment to blind purchase of future releases for a nickel. email me at: hotbridgeinbrooklyn@yahoo.com /peace, K
