"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Hard to make it out from all that wind but I believe Dave said that for $700 & if you order it during pre-sale it gets hand delivered to your door by either Bob, Phil, Micky or Bill. After the presale you get Donna. In all seriousness I have that same feeling of rejection that I got when my Fare thee well envelope was returned. It's going to be epic yet most probably out of reach. Wish it was closer to $500, I'll have to settle for the comp.

There it is. There are some really nice shows in there. Some fine 80s shows too. I also can't afford to drop $700 on dead shows. That is not in the family budget. Why not make some sort of pre-order for individual shows and print more?? I gotta say I find this all pretty sad and nauseating. Everything that's come down for 2015 has been so high cost. This is so exclusive. This is one more run at the money. I think I need a break from dead.net

And here I thought this was gonna be a fun 50th celebration.
No way can I afford this and the wife would kill me too! I gotta agree with someone earlier mentioning how all the 50th stuff is so expensive. 700$ is just too much money right now especially with no advanced notice whatsoever for the presale. Thanks Dave nice to see that the show will not be available individually on CD or electronically. Gotta say this one stings, even more so than not being able to get a ticket to a single Santa Clara or Chicago show. Please make these available for individual purchasing or electronic download. Seriously.

It is worth noting that the info above says individuals shows will not be sold on CD. However, the possibility of individual shows being available as downloads still remains. "Never Trust a Prankster."

Why not run a individual pre-order sale for a short time and then they will know how many extra copies of each show they will need to produce.

More on that here.)

well it ain't shipping if you are an international customer and we are the ones who actually have to pay postage on this plus Rhino won't do (I asked) what they did with E72 steamer trunk and charge the customs upfront via UPS (who will happily do this) so that means when Rhino are finally bothered to send the last ones out it will sit in customs for week + I didn't mind the delay to box itself as they got it "just exactly perfect" but I really do mind paying more and then be stuck at the end of the line - this will be Rhino's doing not dead.net as before Rhino took over the dead operation treated international customers very well oh and before you say it is because I ordered it late I ordered this in the first 30 minutes of it being available sorry I just hate such blatant unfairness...

lgreen: "sorry I just hate such blatant unfairness..." Did you make it to adulthood still thinking the world is fair? If you live a billion miles away from Rhino vs next door, it's going to take longer, and cost more, to get it to you. What isn't obvious about that?

I know it doesn't take as long to send something from California to Oregon than it does to send to England - but that process takes even longer if you send all the nearby (i.e. American orders out first) and only then send out the order to further away... also I (like all international purchasers) pay postage which was free in continental America - so the unfairness is the prioritisation of the American orders and that is "blatant unfairness"... anyway thank you for your kind message rbmumkin

A second email from "Customer services" my box won't be dispatching till mid November so I guess that is true for all international orders... I will carefully restrain what I say to suggest this shows contempt for many people who love the Dead and pay [more] for these releases... I've tried emailing drrhino but nothing MaryE is there nothing that the real Dead.net can do?

I got a mail from Dead.net today and it says: "We are pleased to inform you that the beautiful sold out 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN boxed sets are beginning to ship (yep, finally)!" and furthermore: "You will receive shipment confirmation email with a tracking number separately, once your order has left the warehouse." I live in Europe and it don't say nuthin' about November. Also, when it was ordered makes absolutely no difference to when it ships. Igreen - maybe Customer Service have taken umbridge at your bad attitude and have singled you out for special treatment. Just sayin', as our American friends like to say.

WOW. Everything is lavish. Solid wood with metal hinges. Red felt covered cubby holes on the bottom for the book and the scroll. The book's cover appears to be leather but even if it's faux leather, it's thick and has a skeleton and roses pressed into it on both sides. The two halves of the book have the pages reversed, so the historical essay half faces one way, then you flip it over to read the half with all the deadhead stories. The lid opens in which the 30 digipaks are lovingly caressed into cubby holes that hold groups of five digipaks each. Each show has its liner notes, tracks with timings, photos of newspaper clippings or band shots, etc, with a basic track list on the back. Nice thick gold 45 has its own sleeve on the inside of top cover. The box itself, with all its artwork is very cool. I will leave it to the more talented to describe and/or analyze the Deadland artwork itself. Oh, a ticket and backstage pass were placed inside the book. Unlike the ones in the 1990 boxes, these are NOT repros. These are original authentic tickets and backstage passes from their archives. My ticket is for 10/30/91 and pass from 6/21/93. The scroll, tied with a small leather strap, is quite long. It lists every song played (or close to it - I don't know what the parameters were for inclusion) and shows what years it was played in (with easily seen gaps). It is in chronological order, so songs played in 1965 are listed first, etc. At the top of your scroll is your box #. I think this is where it would say miracle if you got one. This is quite miracle enough for me. Thank you Deadland!!!!!!!

Simonrob I got the same email you mention but that doesn't say when they plan to ship - I am not suggesting Europeans get special treatment just that they/international customers shouldn't have to wait 6 to 8 weeks longer than American customers... if it were the other way round and there were all being dispatched overseas and not to US there would be a ton of outrage!

Rick is indeed an incredible guitarist...love Hoochie Koo, who can't love the raw rocknroll. Hang on Snoopy uh I mean Sloopy...nice I must have been a bad boy for the 50th...still no shipping email. That is alright. As I said yesterday I have had stuff arrive before the email. So no big deal. It would have been nice to track so that I could be home to ensure it isn't stolen. Because of the delay I had to cancel a Trip to the beach...boohoo. On the best of the bright side, maybe I will get mine tomorrow. The 26th anniversary of my last show. Also arriving within the week are Winterland 73, the 50th Anniversary of the Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics. Might not be around here as much; I know that upsets many...Also pre-ordered Blair's book "This is all a dream" which won't be here until November. Some great posts the last 15 hours or so...As far as today and tomorrow, think I will revisit the box with my last shows. Have only made it through a 3rd of E72, wanted to be at the halfway point. Thanks to Kate I picked up 3 DP's last week. Listened to (Number 9, number 9, number 9) Madison Square Garden Sept. 1990 last weekend. It was much better than I was expecting. Got pretty darn spacey during No MSG Jam into drums. Also got number 11 from 1972 and it was good as well. Way too much to absorb, I might have an official release stroke...

It normally takes two or two and a half weeks for me to receive orders shipped by Dead.net, not 6 to 8 weeks longer than American customers. What exactly should be clarified?

Yes Simonrob I know it takes 2 weeks longer normally (for a Dave's Picks or similar) but what Customer Services are suggesting - which is what I am saying is unfair - is that they are not sending out all 6500 Boxes at the same time but have staggered it so that the American ones have already started dispatching (and being received) and the overseas ones (or at least some European ones) will go much later - presumably this is because they haven't assembled all 6500 boxes yet and/or the price of dispatch overseas is more than they thought and so have cut the cheapest deal they could which means we wait I don't think there is anything wrong in expecting all paying customers to be treated equally which plainly is not happening here... I am particularly surprised that a fellow overseas customer clearly thinks I am making too much of this...

Oh and if someone overseas whose box isn't dispatched till mid November happens to have one of the 78 magic scrolls it will be too late to claim their gold record!

I just don't understand where you get the idea that boxes will be shipped to European customers "much later" than to American customers, or indeed that European shipments will occur in mid-November. I have not seen this stated, or even alluded to, anywhere. That not all 6500 boxes are being shipped at the same instant is not really surprising and I have no reason to have any negative feelings or expectations. I would imagine that it would take a few days for all the boxes to ship.

Simonrob, I asked Customer Services when my box would ship and they emailed to say: "I'm looking at your order and it appears to be shipping around or about the middle of November. " I assumed this was a mistyping so I asked them to confirm and they said: "I apologize for the inconvenience, but from our records it will not ship until the date that I sent you and I am very sorry for this. I'm also a music lover and I know how disappointed you must be, but we need to receive more from the manufacturer. Sir, at this point the product is sold out. If we get it in sooner than we will send it to you. Thank you for your patience and understanding." Thus I posted on here and - reasonably I think - reckon this is pretty shoddy!

Kate I agree, what an infectious grin that guy in the unboxing video has. At least, I thought so, until I noticed the box cutter stashed in his shirt.

No, they CD's are not sealed in plastic wrap. That would have been odd, though, don't you think?

LOL You know, a few of you, like Claney, Kate, Dantian, JimInMD (I'm sure there are a few others I should include) should be able to put an act together and go on the road. Dead Comic Crew.

Very happy here - the box is a nice manageable size, and the individual show packages look perfect. And the ticket, pass - super nice touch. Some of the backstage passes I've seen are frame-able for sure. Can't wait. EDIT: Aw shucks wjon, thanks! I'll be here all week.

I don't know, I didn't get the Europe '72 box, but I bought them individually and they were sealed, so I don't know what to expect. I'm selling my 80s and 90s so am curious if they're sealed. Thanks wjonjd, appreciate the feedback.

Oh, I didn't realize that about the E72 shows. I got the trunk, and they were not sealed. Hope you don't have to wait too long! This thing is freaking beautiful.

For those of you who are concerned about not being home when the box arrives and having it stolen off your porch.. I can't imagine any shipping company, UPS, FEDEX, or USPS would drop a $700 package without requiring a signature.. right?

Ok....now seeing some luckies having received Boxzilla I can't help but wish upon that (Dark) Star...but up here in MA and no official "It's Shipped" email yet but also they have a flair for sending stuff out first and getting shipping notices after receipt. I need the 'stoop camera' to check my stoop!!! Cheers to those who have received, today is a magic day. EDIT: Negatory on stoop-age....fingers crossed for tomorrow as we head into a long weekend...here's to hoping!

Wow, ok, now I can't wait to get home from work! Just my luck I'll keep having to wait. I live in Los Angeles you'd think we'd be one of the first to get the thing! Been an extremely rough couple of days, I could use a Miracle right about now!

For those that have already received their box, what type of shipping was used? I am just praying that its not UPS mail innovations or FedEx smartpost. It takes about 3 weeks for anything shipped that way to get to me here in Alaska. Thanks!
