We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

So Off Topic...But we All Love Star Wars

Gary - indeed, I am an avid collector and builder of many many sets....pretty much all original trilogy stuff...and yes...my amazing better half got me BOTH the Lego Star Destroyer AND DEATH STAR last Christmas. She was mortified but did it anyway. I have an entire 'Toy Closet' inhabited by many of these things and some Lord of the Rings stuff too...it's sad but happy - really.

Yup, saw Yes in Jul 2013, they were good with new singer, still not the same. Although Chris' base bombs were awesome. I saw (if memory serves)the opening night of ABWH at Mud Island in Memphis in 1989. Got busted taping. Ended up stage right about 10 feet from Steve Howe for about half the show as they were trying to decide whether to call the authorities. They took the tapes, gave us back the equipment and let us return to our seats. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and still smuggled the deck in my shorts. Kept thinking, it is about to fall out. Please let me in, come on. Got in, set-up had the meters pinging just right. Had two small shotgun Mics sticking out of a baseball cap. Friend next to me poked me, turn to the right and there is security looking. Try to grab the hat and pull it off, they motion us out of the seats. To this day I just do not understand. They fans clapped and mocked us. They were the ones that turned us in. What, were they worried everyone in the crowd was going to jail? I bet they were shocked when we triumphantly returned. Spent some time with their tour manager, he was cool about it. Even Steve Howe came over laughing and gave us a wink. He (tour mgr) figured we were not part of professional money making bootleggers (and questioned us about that). Guess the look in our eyes gave it away and the trippy shirts we had on. I was wearing a flipped out Berzerkly shirt I got out there in 87. Great show even with the bust. Afternoon liquid, with the band opening just 30 minutes before sunset.

...hbob, about that '94 show

...I was at that Boston Garden show and despite it being '94, it was probably one of the best shows I ever attended. Energy was up, up and well the setlist says a lot with the H>S>F opener, the well documented So Many Roads (this appeared in a '30 Days of Dead'), that Scarlet > Fire and Terrapin and yes the Stella Blue...all raucous. In total agreement, it sounds great and was such a thrill to be there in my hometown venue, no less.

30 Trips listening

All I can say is WOW!! If the stream sounds this good I cannot wait to hear the cds. I have been jumping all around and I am amazed at the sound quality. So far I have listened to: '66, '95, '85, '71, '94, '67, and '84. I was amazed at how good Jerry sounded on the '94 show. I saw my last show in '87 and I had been led to believe that his voice was shot by the '90's, but that certainly is not the case here. Hats off once again to DL for finding gems from all years. He remains 'Da Man!! Rock on

claney - will check out that TOO. Recently just checked out the DaP 11 Truckin' => TOO => Brokendown at someone's recommendation (maybe you), and it's a barnburner. Gary Far - lol - I was hoping some Yes fan would pick up on that reference. RIP Chris Squire, it was his song. Too bad they never pulled Jon back in the ring for one last show with the classic lineup (and it's not as if they can just pull in the "other" bass player at this point, because it's the one position that never had two members, ABWH / Levin not withstanding). Jim - I also am a huge fan of 4/24 - the way part II starts with Keith's piano introduction, and that melody they kick off for the one and only time at around 9:20 - so brief, yet so memorable. My first Dark Star in retrospect. I think 5/18 and 5/23 Dark Stars are damn fine, maybe my favorites after 4/8, which I agree is unparalleled. I get a little bit lost on 5/4 and 5/11; I guess my preference is rhythm and melody over discordant space exploration (which I like in smaller doses). And then there are the Tivoli Brothers, which are a nice ride themselves, both with killer (if not opposite) segues into Sugar Magnolia. And then, I don't know about you, but I someone lump 8/27/72 in with E72 shows, I think because of the pristine multi-track sound quality, so I'll put in a kudo for 8/27/72. Edit - by the way, also love the 5/24 Rider. Because I love 5/3 ChinaCat, and don't care for its associated Rider (with all of the vocal overdubs), I put The China Cat from 5/3 with the Rider from 5/24, and..heh...it's seamless. I don't know who to complement on that - Jeff Norman, the Grateful Dead, or myself. I'll go with myself since the prior parties are most likely unaware.

@KeithFan and All....still Feelin Groovy...

Hey KeithFan...since you are a...Keith Fan....I assume you have seen/heard the Dark Star from 10/22/71 Chicago (can't recall off the top of my head which official release it was) and if not it MUST be checked. EDIT: while the DS noted here did in fact appear on DaPick's 3, it's not from 10/22 - it's actually from the additional Bonus tracks that were included, from October 21. In my iPod I inexplicably have grouped them into the same playlist/show as 10/22...my bad. While not overly jumbo like to 30-minute Stars from The Trunk, the first half is about 14 mins and change (and is then split by Sittin on Top of The World - AWESOME) - and toward the end of this first foray, right around 11:20, Keith TAKES OFF along with Jerry, shortly Phil and Bobby fill back in and they are all pounding away - all are turned up to '11' - aka One Louder - into a jubilant jam that then morphs into one of the most energized Feelin Groovy jams I've heard. It only lasts a few minutes and then falls into a short frenzy before 'Sittin' and then is closed by a 2 minute DS second verse and done. You may need a wipee when it's all over. Lost In Space

Well, I sit about 100 miles east of Taylor PA patiently awaiting UPS's arrival at my office, while I read about deliveries elsewhere in my general vicinity and farther afield (MD, IL). I got the shipping update email but my order status still says its backordered with estimated shipping date of 10/31. It does seem that there is no rhyme or reason to the sequence in which they are shipping based on the fact that a couple of the recipients posting here ordered the box after I did. But that's OK, I'm just glad they started shipping finally and it's fun reading all the giddy posts...like kids in a candy store. And I have plenty of good tunes to listen to until the box lands here. I'm a patient man.

USB has not gone out, according to someone at Dead.net

I just got off the phone with Dead.net, and they said that the USB chips are actually scheduled to go out at the end of the month while the box set is shipping now. Wonder why the USB chip is taking so long.

Selling 17 CDs from an era I don't care for from my box set and letting people bid on them to decide their worth is not gauging anybody, and folks in fact were appreciative that I broke up a box set. The irony was, I thought I would reach out to you to burn you some '73 stuff before I realized what a turd you are.

Been loving your posts the last few weeks, we are for the most part a giddy bunch. Question to all, how much space do you think 6,500 of these boxes takes up? I mean if they ship 1,000 a day, that is pretty impressive. I am sure the Europeans get a pallet or two. Then thousand+ (of boxes, maybe 64 boxes/pallet)to the West of the Mississip. I still bet 50% are in the NE corridor...as even Grateful Dead called it deadhead alley (Boston to Washington D.C.). Edit 1) So maybe the U.S. gets 5000 boxes (?) Europe 1,000 - Aussie 250 and maybe the rest of the world 250? Hmmm I would be absolutely interested in that data.

I just received E72 about 90 days ago...had to order the generic version :( So no excitement from opening the Steamer Trunk. Oh well loving the music. Trying to remember which show you saw on E72. Will pay close attention when I get to hear it!

I have just the perfect spot picked out in my music room for this baby. Glad to see you are in Bethlehem. My daughter went to Lehigh so we spent quite a bit of time down there a few years ago. Liner notes

Has anyone who has the box spoken about this yet? I haven't seen it. But I know someone else asked. From the quoted length of the book and the way it appears in the video, the liner notes Are Not in the book. So my edumacated guess is, The Liner Notes Are With The Individual Shows.

I wasn't worried per-say but just curious. I live in the boonies where mail doesn't get delivered and was just trying to figure out if I should take a trip to the post office. I seriously doubt that it will arrive here in AK for a few weeks...which just sucks. :(

The CDS I looked at have a message from Dave I tried the last show. I couldn't find anything in the book but I'm probably the guy really answer but there is no booklet to the shows. the book reeads both you read half than have to make the back the cover I thought that was badass

If you really want to know when the set will arrive at your door... Get a free UPS.com account (not a Premium, or whatever they call it). It will tell you the scheduled date and the tracking. You don't even have to know your package number, it will find it for you. Just have to make sure your name and address are exactly as dead.net has it.

Show notes compared to the 4CD-set

Can anyone give an opinion on the quality of the show notes. I believe in the 4cd truncated set - there were show-by-show reviews and notes. Are these replicated here or would the 4cd box be a good accompaniment to get to also get more detail on shows (as well as be a handy one for thee car).
