We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

This box is clearly a labor of love and is spectacular!!! The jump between 66 and 67 is a quantum leap that can only be explained by alien intervention, and I am doing my best to go from start to finish to get the sense of their artistic development. My wife knew there was a contest so she (gasp!!!) opened my box set with the kids while I was at work. When I came home my kids ran to tell me they didn't find a prize in the box, so I asked them if they opened the secret complement. It blew their minds when I flipped open the lower flap and then I told them there was a book of spells and pulled out the "leather" bound book with the skeleton imprints and their jaw dropped. They believed me for a second, but then I told them it really wasn't a book of spells, but there was a secret scroll... Oh to be young and full of wonder. But the real reason I'm posting is that my buddy is a urologist as assures my that Mr. Lesh's diagnosis is very, very favorable and that he would expect him to recover fully from this. Get well soon Mr. Lesh!!!

7/3/66 Disc One Question

On 7/3/66 Disc One, in the first few seconds of Dancing In The Streetis there a complete drop out of the right channel only leaving sound on the left channel for a second or two? Just asking to see if I need to ask for a replacement.

3/18/71 is not listed in Taping Compendium and only second set listed in Deadbase. Is this show fairly new to circulation? Anyone know?

More Zacherlee and Headphones

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. During high school I can remember tuning in my old Sony radio to late night radio up and down the East Coast. I lived on a peninsula that jutted out in the Chesapeake Bay and I could tune in all sorts of stations late at night. WNEW stands out as does WBZ in Boston. I remember hearing new albums by the Ultimate Spinach and Beacon Street Union while listening to the "Boss sound of Bosstown on WBZ. Both stations turned me on to lots of great music. Washington, DC had a great station in WHFS, Home Grown Radio, broadcasting from high atop the towers in Bethesda, MD. Great radio back in the day! Some high value headphones you might want to consider... Sennheiser Momentum - Closed back phones in on ear or around ear models - Bass forward phones. Music Direct has some incredible sales on both models Sennheiser HD 558 or 598 - Nice spacious sound - very good for listening to live performances or action movies. Grado - Grado SR 125 - Nice open sound stage that lets you hear a lot of detail. Choose any of the Prestige models and I think you would be happy. Alessandro Series by Grado - You are on the stage with the band with incredible focus on guitars. The MS1 comes in two prices $99 and $109. Can't go wrong with either. Google Alessandro High End to purchase. Grado headphones are handmade in Brooklyn HiFi Man RE400 - In ear phones. Nice for travel and noise isolation. Hard to beat for around $79 The Audeze headphone mentioned earlier are exceptional - just a little out of my price range... Thanks for all the good stuff here!

John Zacherley / Chiller Theater

I may be cut from the same paisley cloth as Mr. Ziffle. In the early 60s I used to watch Chiller Theater out of N.Y.C. It was hosted by none other than the famous John Zacherley. He would do these great comic interludes during horror movies. Voodoo Island stands out in my mind. Fast forward to WNEW in the late 60s. Cutting edge radio that was thought provoking. I remember a DJ by the name of Roscoe who would read works he had written. Really deep material. As for FM radio in the present day, there are some true free form seat of the pants DJs that can inspire and heal the listeners. The history of Underground Radio really begins with Tom Donahue and KMPX in the Bay Area. Playing complete albums and capturing the spirit of long songs such as Viola Lee Blues or Butterfield Blues Bands song East/West. I believe those pioneers of the mid 60s took great inspiration from classical ragas of India and extended jams of John Coltrane. And going back earlier, dance marathons anyone? But I digress. Certainly Jack Kerouac used spontaneous prose as a form "stretching out". Anyway Ziffle and I must have been at some of the same Dead concerts at the Fillmore East and the Capitol Theater (Port Chester). My fourth row center seat at the Fillmore 9/19/70. Maybe it was Mr. Ziff or one of his buddies who sold it to me on the street before the show for face value. ($5:50) Long live Zacheley! Love and healing to Phil.

started on the 95 show, very nice, if you notice, this show and a few others were recorded by John Cutler vs others by Dan Healy, the Cutler shows are recorded much better. 94 show is very good, there seems to be a drop out or digi skip when help on the way goes into slipknot, from track 1 to 2, anybody else got this? 93, right away you notice the sound quality is not as good as 95 and 94, recorded by Healy, but a fine show non the less. 92 Hell in a Bucket on this show and 93 show, not my favorite opener and why 2 in a row? Healy again and Bucket starts off inferior recording, but gets better as the show progresses. 91 great show, 8 man band with Hornsby and Branford, great sound, better Healy recording. 90, another great show, with Bruce and Vince, Bruce really did fit in great with this band. 89, 24 track, recorded by Cutler, this is the shit here, best show of 89. I have stories about this weekend in Miami, but will save those for another post. 88, inferior sound quality again and there are way better 88 shows to pick from, why this one? must be the Touch of Gray. The fall 88 tour was hands down better than the spring or summer tour. 87 and 86, 2 discs, short shows, no big jams, nothing special here and another hell in a bucket. I will say the Terrapin from 86 is pretty sweet. I did not go to Dead shows in 86 or 87, giving Jerry some breathing room after his near brush with death. 85 is a very nice show, there were a lot of good shows in 85, especially on the fall tour. The Cutler shows are all top notch recordings, the Healy shows, not so much. I will be listening to the rest of these 8o's shows today, so far, no real problems with discs or anything, the sleeves are way better than those ones from E72, which ripped if you tried to get the disc out, these are much better, the box is nice but won't last very long, made of cardboard, but is a bit sturdier than E72's box, which is very fragile. Love the book, the stories in it are awesome and the way that half is one side up and the other half is up side down, is this the way everyone's is or is mine just put together wrong? doesn't matter, still all there and quite cool. All in all, a good 11 shows to start off the listening experience, I would have chosen better shows for 85 86 87 and 88, but I don't have access to the vault and the shows I would have picked may be worse recordings than these, who knows? Just my opinions and are subject to discussion. More later, have a great day, freezing here in the mountains this am, gonna be a long long cold winter, good thing I have this box to keep me warm :)

Contextualizing Dick's Picks 4

ziffle - Incredible posts on the 2/13-14/70 runs. Thanks for all that info, and I always love those first-hand stories. Jim - After Ziffle's contextualization of the shows, here is my attempt to explain why I think they chopped up that run when they released DP4, by contextualizing the release. First, this was released in early 1996, very early in the Vault release experiment - and it WAS an experiment at the time. Dick's Picks 1 was a chopped up 73 show - two discs, DP2 was one (awesome) disc, DP3 saw them chopping up one of the all-time 77 Dead shows (also two discs). So, DP4 was the first three-disc release. More expensive, more risky. At the time in the music biz, A two disc CD set was a big deal, and a three-disc set was nearly unheard of - a "box set." The BIG expensive box sets released in the early to mid-90s were things like Marley's Songs of Freedom, or the Police Message in a Box (ALL their albums and singles, from their whole career, on four discs!!!). This was part of a gradual evolution to bigger releases... first to complete shows (Dick's Picks 5!), then two shows together (DP29), then full runs (Fillmore West 69), and still later to complete tours (Europe 72). Now, it's easy to wish they had figured out earlier that we are willing to cough up tons of money for complete, but this is forgetting yet another factor: We were all much younger then, with far less disposable income. In Feb 1996 I had just finished grad school; I had begun my first full-time college teaching gig only a few weeks earlier. I was living in a shack, putting all my money into ramen noodles and paying down student loans. I would NOT have been able to buy full runs, etc. So, in short, the evolution of bigger boxes and more complete releases coincided with (but was not caused by) the evolution of many of the Deadheads to old farts with some money to spend. Co-evolution baby! It's 27 degrees here in western MA. My wife is making scones, my daughter is making Play-doh people, and I haven't heard much of 30 Trips yet, just hard to with all this other stuff going on. But I will - and life is GOOD. Time for more coffee. Cheers everyone ...

Fillmore East sound board + Dick's Picks 4

Top notch for the era from what is stated about the sound board. I think Bears notes mention John Chester unique sound board. Check out Dicks Picks 4 notes for details and also the Allman Brothers Band - Fillmore East February 1970 CD notes that was released on GDRecords. I think I read someplace Dick L or Bear mentioned the tapes were Mono and Stereo, which may have been the challenge of getting them out? Bear mentions the two bands briefly crossed passed in Atlanta 1969, but did not hear the ABB play live at the time. Only hearing their studio album in Autumn later that year, so it was a treat and sort of surprise for Bear to see 2 trap sets, similar to the GD when they were billed together in Feb1970 "Glorious Sunday morning" - love that

got it in mail today even though backordered on my order status

I'm another eastern PA resident who got it today. Never got a shipping notice and was still listed as backordered w/ expected ship 10/31 on my order status online. So, don't fret too much about whatever your order status says.No miracle but got #99 on scroll. Got 9/12/94 Oakland for ticket, and 2/21/95 Salt Lake for backstage pass. Tickets inserted in book. Book looks like pretty nice quality. Overall CD packs better quality, more durable than the ones for Europe '72. The whole box seems more sturdy than the Europe '72 trunk as well.

Original Tickets info

An email from GD came in at 2:45am today. It's the same one that told about the "miracle" scrolls. It also contained the following info: "Along with the aforementioned book and scroll, you will find an original Grateful Dead concert ticket and backstage pass from the UCSC Grateful Dead Archives included as a token of our appreciation for your patience." That is actually a VERY cool little addition!! An authentic piece of the history. I wonder how many box purchasers will get these and not realize those aren't repros like in the 1990 box sets? Thanks Dave and Co.!!!!!

Can anyone tell me the earliest Datk Star version that has been released? Just listened to the 1/23/68 version from the RT Bonus Disc and cant seem to own an earlier version. Sounds young. ..very speedy compared to others, but official release was may 68 so this must have been one of the first ....no? What was earlier? Thanks, still killing time :-)

Signed up for UPS My Choice a while ago; they let you know when the delivery day and time window is (for me, tomorrow). You can go on site and easily arrange to pick it up at the UPS place or at a few other local businesses. I like that a lot more than leaving 16 pounds of Dead shows out on my front porch in an increasingly sketchy neighborhood. BTW, go click on the link with the instructions for claiming the bonus plaque; it shows you exactly where to look for "miracle" on your scroll. One show a day? I should be able to get through this just in time for the Fare Thee Well box to arrive...

Congrats to all who have theirs,mine should be here Tuesday..WooHoo!!..My 2 cents worth on resellers:I never buy more than 1 copy of any release.If I get it and don't like it due to sound quality,setlist or whatever I will resell it. I let the market dictate that price.Another shoutout to my man Brian..I have got a few whales from him I couldn't get anywhere else and have sold him some unwanted shows for fair prices for the both of us. I wouldn't surprise myself if I break this set up to pay for other shows I want more.To everyone bashing all resellers that don't "get the music"......perhaps we are selling to acquire different shows of said music.I can't fathom how many people have bought long wanted but soldout shows from resellers. I hope it seems clear that buying 3-4 sets of everything to profit isn't my bag.....now bring on that 84 Dew!!

so if I can hold of somebody's time machine I can actually go to a grateful dead show using these tickets? wow they look authentic, they could very well be real and authentic...for the record I got Oakland 1994 everybody has different tickets it seems.

UPS Tracking

When I first signed up on the UPS site there was no information on the box. I clicked on the "Tracking" tab on the top of the page once signed in, then clicked on the "My UPS Choice" on the next row of tabs down from the top. This took my to a screen labelled "My Delivery Planner" and there was the tracking information for the box. Hope this helps anyone who couldn't find the information on UPS yet.

I live in a pretty big co-op building and was greeted with a brown box on the stoop, not unusual and I don't order shit so I blew past it, or was about to, and I saw scrawled on a side in this Hobbity typeface -- Pen Mill Phil Mickey-- and then there was a steal your face and my name and my address ann I took it home and then I opened it and unpacked it and then, and then.... The cardboard box in and of itself is cool. The packaging clever. I'm going to keep it. In fact, it's in my basement storage now. Otherwise one of my cats would piss and shit in it and the other would eat it. I spent a lot of time just touching it. It has some kind of hajj thing going for it. I just want to circle it. Over and over. If you haven't watched the video on how to navigate this thing, don't. Not sure what's in the video but I got probably way to much pleasure figuring it out. Seasons and phases and grain patterns. Ticket and backstage pass inside an embossed leather book. Maybe pleather.Or vinyl. It's not leather but has that feel. It's pretty sweet. Embossed both sides. So much symmetry. And, I've only gone through a bit, but the contents found therein are colorful and touching and warm. Terrific art. Terrific personal narratives. Ticket and backstage pass (both authentic from Oakland Coliseum. Ticket: 10/30/91. Pass: 2/25/95. A timeline scroll. Inscribed panels. Obscured inscriptions. So. All of this without listening to a single note, which is the whole reason for this thing. (And I'm listening to 10/20/68 right now and it's crisp and grand and the CAUTION!!.) But the best is that my daughters, 10 and 8, are so stoked because I love it so much and they want to play with it and read the scroll and read the book and look at the art and I get to explain it all to them and they're LISTENING to me, for the first time ever, because it's just so fucking cool and you want to touch it and it has this gravitas, it's IMPORTANT. My wife, I think, is a little disturbed by it and my daughters' fascination with it and she's wondering how long "that thing" is going to stay on the kitchen counter. To each their own but 'that thing" is pretty fucking great. So much to take in!

Arrived Today - My wife was away!!!

OK - so I had to post - it is so good to hear that others were concerned about the box arriving and their wives discovering it. I have had to keep this seriously quiet. I used a credit card that she does't know I have - and when she heard about it from a co-worker, I said that I would never pay 700.00 for shows that I already had in my collection. I do have most of them - but I still bit. I haven't even dug into the box because I am keeping it in my car overnight until tomorrow. I have, however, begun listening. Everything sounds great so far - thanks GDP. I just have to say this though - on several of the disc jackets, 83 and 84 for example, there are remarks by Lemieux regarding the inconsistent play of the band during those years. As I interpreted the numerous remarks of this nature - I began to get more and more irritated. Lemieux -are you freakin crazy? Fall '83 holds its own with any of your precious 70's tours. Maybe not better - but in the conversation. I love the 70's as well -but I saw the bulk of my 250ish shows between '82 and '90. '82 was unbelievable for long stretches as was '85. So freakin what if Jerry forgot some words or was smokin coke. If you discount shows on those terms (drugs) - you'd have to stop listening. Have you even listened to any of the Merriweather shows? Springfield, Mass. '85 might have been the best two shows I ever saw (The HSF night reigns supreme) The Greeks and Frost? Red Rocks? Alpine? How about the St. Stephen shows from 83? Iowa 82? Glenn's Falls 82? MSG 82? How about Fall '85? C'mon man - sometimes the light needs a little dark - like a touch of grey - you know? There are a lot of us out here that feel this way.

UPS My Choice

I have received no email from Dead.net, and my order still says "Backordered" with a ship date of 10/31 Then I signed up for a UPS My Choice account, and lo and behold, my box is scheduled for delivery tomorrow! I am over the moon and may not sleep very well tonite! Rock on

UPS tracking

Looks like mine is scheduled to arrive Friday 10/9 in the afternoon. I've had the last three weeks off and leave for work for a few days about 2 or 3 hours before the box will arrive. I won't be able to see or hear this in person for a few days after it's arrival. Arrrgh.

Glad to read that some of you have got your boxes already. Waiting patiently in Pittsburgh so it can't be that long if Eastern PA got a few already. I have other things on the way, but I'm fairly certain this will stand out. Happy listening to those that have it!

igrateful and dark star

I have a 1/17/68 Carousel Ballroom, which seems to verify with deadbase 50, it's 4:48 min long decent/good sound. Goes into a China Cat. This 68 show looks good, has a 7:40 min Dew. The more I listen the better the recording sounds.

Dark Star - Pluto

iGrateful, You called it, the earliest Dark Star released is 1/23/68 from the Carousel bonus disc. Crystal Ballroom 2/02/68 would be next, from the same release. The earliest whiff of a Dark Star I've heard (a mixed metaphor, I know) is during the Neal Cassady rap jam 7/23/67 ~ at one point Jerry's hitting a version of the riff that classically heralds re-entry into the 2nd verse. Atticstrophic, Pluto will always be a planet to me, whatever they (Bernie Horowitz or the post-modern astronomers) say.

I've not heard 1/17.... My earliest one is 1/20, but that cuts off at 1:55, making 1/22 the oldest complete one I've got or heard, clocking in at 5:43. That 1/23 bonus one is a respectable 7:45.

Janurary 1968 Dark Stars

Deadbase says one thing, my copies from archive say something else. The 7:45 one from 1/23/68 off Road Trip V2N2 bonus disc, says 1/23/68, but deadbase shows no show for that date and the only Dark Star I have from Seattle is 5:40 (and sounds good) I like to get a copy of the bonus disc if anyone has it, I have RT 2-2, but no bonus. Okay, just looked up some more, didn't realize RT 2-2 had bonus TRACKS and a Bonus DISC. I have the tracks, not the disc. Also I noticed there are 3 dark stars on the set, the bonus track copy is 6:45 from 2/2/68 Portland, deadbase doesn't show this,,,a DS on 2/3. So mystery data, still would like a copy of bonus DISC for RT 2-2. And Still the earliest Dark Star I have and verified with deadbase is 1/17/68. Too much data man, but the 1/17 is in archive, worth checking out.

Any miracles out there yet? My box has, apparently, not shipped yet. The unboxing video made my heart beat a little faster... Oh boy!

Has it occurred to you that it is not unreasonable to suppose that people were buying shows from you in the vain hope that they would all be sold quickly so that we didn't have to be subjected to endless posts of your unsold shows list, updated every few hours ad nauseum, both here and on the DP16 board? Now I see that the list has been expanded to include all manner of accoutrements that accompany the shows. Packaging for sale anyone? Does it interest you in the slightest that people have let you know that they find your commercial activities here unacceptable? Seems not.

Still Waiting...

Great to see boxes are going out, but so far the only email I've received is the one about the miracle. At the end it says I'll get shipment information once it leaves the warehouse so I guess mine hasn't left the warehouse yet. Oh well, hopefully next week! Just give me a tracking number so I can get on UPS and watch it make it's way to me!!!

Why did customer service say they would email when they ship? Because they overestimate their own abilities. Don't trust customer service. Trust your friends. Get the UPS account.
