We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

RE Watchya gonna listen to first?

Dig the post born cross-eyed. Here's the shows I'm probably going to dive into first. 1) 10/21/83 Worcester, MA - This show is appealing to me since it's a Brent Bday show, and I've never heard this show yet as well. It sounds like it could be a hot one, since it follows the Fall 83' Hartford run. 2) 6/24/85 Cincinnati, OH - Another mid-80's show that I haven't touched base with yet. Should be good since it's June 85' show. 3) 9/18/74 Dijon, France - Wall Of Sound.. I'm ready for some Phil bombs!! 4) 11/28/80 Lakeland, FL - Big fan of anything Fall 80'. This is the only November 80 show that I haven't heard yet.. Looks really good. 5) 3/18/71 St. Louis, MO - Really hot 71 show. It'll be nice to hear a official remastered version of this..

Alvarhanso, thank you for your response. Would you or anyone out there mind explaining what determines if a show is mixed from a 2 track, 16 track, 24 track, ect. If 16 track was available for shows as far back as 69 shouldn't it be available for at least some of the other releases of lesser sound quality? For example, why was a 2 track mixed used for Spring 90 1, and a 24 track mix used for Spring 90 2 (The Other One Too) when all the shows were from the same tour. It seems like the 24 track mix should have been available for both boxes. And for the DaP's and RT's were 16 track mixes not available for some reason or did they opt not to use that method? Thanks again just trying to get a good grasp of this process!

Resale

Wishing for others misfortune? No. Expressing something about how it would make perfect sense to wait to have product in hand before committing to a resale by a specific date, only to have delays and before a proper inspection of the product to assure quality is the point I made. If I were a buyer who already paid money for a product in a second hand market, expecting it to arrive by a certain time, and expecting it to be exactly as described is what I would hope a seller would take into consideration. I would find late shipping and potential inferior product far more disturbing as a buyer than some friendly advice to potential sellers. Oh well. Some lessons are learned through trials and tribulations, and some salivate at creating imaginary conflict.

The Wait

Some great comments on this board about the postponement of shipping. Could be somebody dropped the ball, created a logjam, slacked off or procrastinated, and now we have this holding pattern of doubt and anger. It's a bit funny, the veracity of this setback creates a lot of downtime for some who were anticipating spending some quality time with the sounds. It could have been worse, could have been discontinued, or a filibuster could have been used to stop the release, or put into a permanent suspension, stalled in a endless holding pattern or lost in a long cooling off period. The setback has put to test the resolve of deadheads and this cunctation will pass. The sales pitch was "don't delay" order yours now, get it before it's too late, due to ship...the lag is hard to handle, but we will survive this jam. Others commented that they would cancel their order, or that the ship date is after the date that you can dispute a charge on your credit card. Others are afraid that the sound will suck, that it will be sloppy productions and bad or less than stellar mastering. Relax, why worry, it will all be ok, I worried once so much I was worrying why I wasn't worrying anymore. Anyone out there remember the Europe '72 box? I had 10 bad discs in that one, with several ripped cd cases made of cardboard, it took over a year, but it was all settled and all was replaced or refunded. I don't think dead-net or rhino is out to rip us off and the delay is better than the alternative - a sub par product that we all will complain about, or worse yet, return for a full refund. Could you imagine all these boxes coming back to rhino for a refund, that could be funny, as long as you didn't work there and have to deal with it. By and By, we will survive.

sound quality

Spring '90 TOO and Europe '72 have the best sound quality, because they are from multitrack masters. The first Spring '90 set was mixed from a 2 track mix, the second was culled from a new mix of the 24 track masters. Europe '72 was remixed from the 16 track masters (as was Fillmore West '69), so Spring '90 TOO, Europe '72, and FW '69 ought to sound the best. Dave's Picks and Road Trips as well as Dick's Picks are from 2 track masters, so there are definite limitations in how much Jeffrey Norman can change the mix, such as to lower Donna, or bring up Bob. By using individual tracks, he can give you the feeling of being onstage as with Spring '90 TOO, or inside the Fillmore. 10/26/89 is one of the shows in 30 Trips that comes from a multitrack master, I think it was on a 16 track. Some people complain about the sound on the Formerly the Warlocks box, which also came from a 16 track source. I think it sounds good, but not great. I think the 30 Trips set will have a range of sound quality, and would expect 10/26/89 to be the best sounding. Hopefully they used multitrack masters on other later shows as well. As to rushing, I think they gave Mr. Norman a breather with the last Dave's Picks and chose one that had already been readied for release as Dave said the May '77 box was almost an April '78 mini-box of 4/21-24/78. I would think, they put the time and effort into getting the sound quality to be as high as they could. And I'll be listening in order from '66 to '95, so I can hear the evolution of the band's sound in an easy to discern and digest manner.

Watchya gonna listen to first?

When reviewing the list of shows that are included in this release as they were revealed in June, a few shows came to mind that I wanted to hear first.1. 11/10/67 I had a bootleg CD sometime ago and it seemed to have a muddy sound, but great performance. I hope the official release cleans up the sound. 2. 10/27/79 I still have a sbd cd-rs of this show, I hope this official release improves the sound, also it's my birthday. 3. 10/27/90 I only streamed this show via Sennheiser HD480 headphones. again it's a b'day show! 4. 10/01/94 Sometimes ya just gotta get into 1994. 5. 02/21/95 sure beats those Chicago shows in July (of '95), in my opinion. 6. the 1968 thru 1977 shows - my favorites. Later on, I decided to play everything in order of year, similar to I have done with Europe 72 for the last five years.

Sound Quality

I hope I am wrong but I fear the mastering has been very rushed indeed... if you go back and play the 'listening parties' on this site [as well as other sites like uncut] you will hear tracks - especially the 80s which are significantly below what we have grown used to with DPicks - obviously most of this is because the 80s soundboards are either cassette masters or very early digital tapes but the work done on DaveP 8 and DickP 32 show with time and care in the mixing you can overcome a lot of the drawbacks. None of the samples offered so far for 79 to 88 suggest this work has been done... even the 89 sample [from a multi-track] sounds 'unmixed' in that Brent's voice and keyboard dominate in a way that they addressed in Spring 90 1&2 I really do hope that I am wrong but I fear this will be a very expensive lost opportunity and I say this having ordered my set on the first date and acknowledging I am still very excited in anticipation... Perhaps we should have all gone for the USB as the high-res files for Spring 90 1 sound stunning through even a mid level portable player

RE: Packaging is a big part

If you copy the USB to a hard drive, transcoding to Apple Lossless at 44.1/16 bits, put the whole lot in iTunes. You can burn the CD's from iTunes easily. But they will NOT be HDCD encoded! Just ordinary CD quality if you want something better than the 320 mp3's included for listening in the car. On a Mac this can be accomplished easily as a batch operation using freeware XLD by setting the following preferences in XLD: In the "General" preference, set output format to Apple Lossless, click the option button, and set "Sample Rate" to 44.1, and "Bit Depth" to 16. Below that is "Output Directory" click the "Specify" button, and then click "Set" to tell the app where to put the files. In the "Batch" preference, make sure that "Preserve directory structures" IS selected, and make sure that "Delete original files" is NOT selected. Then close the preference, and use the usual File menu "Open" and select all of the folders (or however they deliver the USB version) of FLAC files, and go have a cup of coffee and cut the lawn (if you have one) or whatever. It will take as long as an hour, depending on how fast your processor is. This is very easy and XLD is a great reliable application. Then, burn away at will. I'm sure that there is equivalent and easy to use Windows software that will accomplish the task, but I don't know anything about that. Maybe someone else can provide a Windows explanation.

Sound Quality?

Happy Saturday Deadland. I have a question regarding the sound quality of this release. Please keep in mind that I am not very well versed in the technology of recording. In my opinion from listening to the releases over the years The Other One is easily the best dead mix I have heard. I revisit those CD’s often and love them. The Europe 72 releases also sound great to my ear as well. I believe I can hear a big difference between these and the Dave’s Picks and Road Trip series. Is there any way of knowing what to expect with the CD’s in this release. Mixing is one of the most time consuming and costly parts of a release, right? Is there concern that they may have rushed this or was it done right? Thanks in advance!

I think it depends on the card.. but I had an issue a few years back that went back much more than 30 days and AmEx investigated the matter and refunded me 100%. ..but I'm still holding out hope that this will be a decent release. There are several shows in this offering that have my attention, some old, plus Cape Code, Augusta and MSG. I think I am somewhere in the middle of BrianHahne and OneMan in listening habits. For E72, Brian (must have) started with a few dozen pots of coffee and didn't sleep until he listened to the whole box. One Man must be close to finishing his first listen now, but needs to review and re-write some of his notes as the Staples near his home has run out of paper (again). (kidding folks). I expect it to take me on the heavy side of six months to get through this monstrosity. ..and I doubt if I really hit too much other stuff so I am getting in my diversity now. Doc Watson yesterday, Summertime, when the livin's easy. Man that guy can pick.. super clean. Good Luck FH2 and everyone else.

got it in mail today even though backordered on my order status

I'm another eastern PA resident who got it today. Never got a shipping notice and was still listed as backordered w/ expected ship 10/31 on my order status online. So, don't fret too much about whatever your order status says.No miracle but got #99 on scroll. Got 9/12/94 Oakland for ticket, and 2/21/95 Salt Lake for backstage pass. Tickets inserted in book. Book looks like pretty nice quality. Overall CD packs better quality, more durable than the ones for Europe '72. The whole box seems more sturdy than the Europe '72 trunk as well.

Original Tickets info

An email from GD came in at 2:45am today. It's the same one that told about the "miracle" scrolls. It also contained the following info: "Along with the aforementioned book and scroll, you will find an original Grateful Dead concert ticket and backstage pass from the UCSC Grateful Dead Archives included as a token of our appreciation for your patience." That is actually a VERY cool little addition!! An authentic piece of the history. I wonder how many box purchasers will get these and not realize those aren't repros like in the 1990 box sets? Thanks Dave and Co.!!!!!

Can anyone tell me the earliest Datk Star version that has been released? Just listened to the 1/23/68 version from the RT Bonus Disc and cant seem to own an earlier version. Sounds young. ..very speedy compared to others, but official release was may 68 so this must have been one of the first ....no? What was earlier? Thanks, still killing time :-)

Just go pick it up

Signed up for UPS My Choice a while ago; they let you know when the delivery day and time window is (for me, tomorrow). You can go on site and easily arrange to pick it up at the UPS place or at a few other local businesses. I like that a lot more than leaving 16 pounds of Dead shows out on my front porch in an increasingly sketchy neighborhood. BTW, go click on the link with the instructions for claiming the bonus plaque; it shows you exactly where to look for "miracle" on your scroll. One show a day? I should be able to get through this just in time for the Fare Thee Well box to arrive...

Congrats to all who have theirs,mine should be here Tuesday..WooHoo!!..My 2 cents worth on resellers:I never buy more than 1 copy of any release.If I get it and don't like it due to sound quality,setlist or whatever I will resell it. I let the market dictate that price.Another shoutout to my man Brian..I have got a few whales from him I couldn't get anywhere else and have sold him some unwanted shows for fair prices for the both of us. I wouldn't surprise myself if I break this set up to pay for other shows I want more.To everyone bashing all resellers that don't "get the music"......perhaps we are selling to acquire different shows of said music.I can't fathom how many people have bought long wanted but soldout shows from resellers. I hope it seems clear that buying 3-4 sets of everything to profit isn't my bag.....now bring on that 84 Dew!!

so if I can hold of somebody's time machine I can actually go to a grateful dead show using these tickets? wow they look authentic, they could very well be real and authentic...for the record I got Oakland 1994 everybody has different tickets it seems.

UPS Tracking

When I first signed up on the UPS site there was no information on the box. I clicked on the "Tracking" tab on the top of the page once signed in, then clicked on the "My UPS Choice" on the next row of tabs down from the top. This took my to a screen labelled "My Delivery Planner" and there was the tracking information for the box. Hope this helps anyone who couldn't find the information on UPS yet.

I live in a pretty big co-op building and was greeted with a brown box on the stoop, not unusual and I don't order shit so I blew past it, or was about to, and I saw scrawled on a side in this Hobbity typeface -- Pen Mill Phil Mickey-- and then there was a steal your face and my name and my address ann I took it home and then I opened it and unpacked it and then, and then.... The cardboard box in and of itself is cool. The packaging clever. I'm going to keep it. In fact, it's in my basement storage now. Otherwise one of my cats would piss and shit in it and the other would eat it. I spent a lot of time just touching it. It has some kind of hajj thing going for it. I just want to circle it. Over and over. If you haven't watched the video on how to navigate this thing, don't. Not sure what's in the video but I got probably way to much pleasure figuring it out. Seasons and phases and grain patterns. Ticket and backstage pass inside an embossed leather book. Maybe pleather.Or vinyl. It's not leather but has that feel. It's pretty sweet. Embossed both sides. So much symmetry. And, I've only gone through a bit, but the contents found therein are colorful and touching and warm. Terrific art. Terrific personal narratives. Ticket and backstage pass (both authentic from Oakland Coliseum. Ticket: 10/30/91. Pass: 2/25/95. A timeline scroll. Inscribed panels. Obscured inscriptions. So. All of this without listening to a single note, which is the whole reason for this thing. (And I'm listening to 10/20/68 right now and it's crisp and grand and the CAUTION!!.) But the best is that my daughters, 10 and 8, are so stoked because I love it so much and they want to play with it and read the scroll and read the book and look at the art and I get to explain it all to them and they're LISTENING to me, for the first time ever, because it's just so fucking cool and you want to touch it and it has this gravitas, it's IMPORTANT. My wife, I think, is a little disturbed by it and my daughters' fascination with it and she's wondering how long "that thing" is going to stay on the kitchen counter. Arrived Today - My wife was away!!!

OK - so I had to post - it is so good to hear that others were concerned about the box arriving and their wives discovering it. I have had to keep this seriously quiet. I used a credit card that she does't know I have - and when she heard about it from a co-worker, I said that I would never pay 700.00 for shows that I already had in my collection. I do have most of them - but I still bit. I haven't even dug into the box because I am keeping it in my car overnight until tomorrow. I have, however, begun listening. Everything sounds great so far - thanks GDP. I just have to say this though - on several of the disc jackets, 83 and 84 for example, there are remarks by Lemieux regarding the inconsistent play of the band during those years. As I interpreted the numerous remarks of this nature - I began to get more and more irritated. Lemieux -are you freakin crazy? Fall '83 holds its own with any of your precious 70's tours. Maybe not better - but in the conversation. I love the 70's as well -but I saw the bulk of my 250ish shows between '82 and '90. '82 was unbelievable for long stretches as was '85. So freakin what if Jerry forgot some words or was smokin coke. If you discount shows on those terms (drugs) - you'd have to stop listening. Have you even listened to any of the Merriweather shows? Springfield, Mass. '85 might have been the best two shows I ever saw (The HSF night reigns supreme) The Greeks and Frost? Red Rocks? Alpine? How about the St. Stephen shows from 83? Iowa 82? Glenn's Falls 82? MSG 82? How about Fall '85? C'mon man - sometimes the light needs a little dark - like a touch of grey - you know? There are a lot of us out here that feel this way.

UPS My Choice

I have received no email from Dead.net, and my order still says "Backordered" with a ship date of 10/31 Then I signed up for a UPS My Choice account, and lo and behold, my box is scheduled for delivery tomorrow! I am over the moon and may not sleep very well tonite! Rock on

UPS tracking

Looks like mine is scheduled to arrive Friday 10/9 in the afternoon. I've had the last three weeks off and leave for work for a few days about 2 or 3 hours before the box will arrive. I won't be able to see or hear this in person for a few days after it's arrival. Arrrgh.

Glad to read that some of you have got your boxes already. Waiting patiently in Pittsburgh so it can't be that long if Eastern PA got a few already. I have other things on the way, but I'm fairly certain this will stand out. Happy listening to those that have it!

igrateful and dark star

I have a 1/17/68 Carousel Ballroom, which seems to verify with deadbase 50, it's 4:48 min long decent/good sound. Goes into a China Cat. This 68 show looks good, has a 7:40 min Dew. The more I listen the better the recording sounds.

Dark Star - Pluto

iGrateful, You called it, the earliest Dark Star released is 1/23/68 from the Carousel bonus disc. Crystal Ballroom 2/02/68 would be next, from the same release. The earliest whiff of a Dark Star I've heard (a mixed metaphor, I know) is during the Neal Cassady rap jam 7/23/67 ~ at one point Jerry's hitting a version of the riff that classically heralds re-entry into the 2nd verse. Atticstrophic, Pluto will always be a planet to me, whatever they (Bernie Horowitz or the post-modern astronomers) say.

I've not heard 1/17.... My earliest one is 1/20, but that cuts off at 1:55, making 1/22 the oldest complete one I've got or heard, clocking in at 5:43. That 1/23 bonus one is a respectable 7:45.

Janurary 1968 Dark Stars

Deadbase says one thing, my copies from archive say something else. The 7:45 one from 1/23/68 off Road Trip V2N2 bonus disc, says 1/23/68, but deadbase shows no show for that date and the only Dark Star I have from Seattle is 5:40 (and sounds good) I like to get a copy of the bonus disc if anyone has it, I have RT 2-2, but no bonus. Okay, just looked up some more, didn't realize RT 2-2 had bonus TRACKS and a Bonus DISC. I have the tracks, not the disc. Also I noticed there are 3 dark stars on the set, the bonus track copy is 6:45 from 2/2/68 Portland, deadbase doesn't show this,,,a DS on 2/3. So mystery data, still would like a copy of bonus DISC for RT 2-2. And Still the earliest Dark Star I have and verified with deadbase is 1/17/68. Too much data man, but the 1/17 is in archive, worth checking out.

Any miracles out there yet? My box has, apparently, not shipped yet. The unboxing video made my heart beat a little faster... Oh boy!

Also just had a call from DHL re paying sales tax. Likely to be delivered Monday or Tuesday. Seems they are shipping in order number sequence as I have a second one on order that DHL knows nothing about yet.

Has it occurred to you that it is not unreasonable to suppose that people were buying shows from you in the vain hope that they would all be sold quickly so that we didn't have to be subjected to endless posts of your unsold shows list, updated every few hours ad nauseum, both here and on the DP16 board? Now I see that the list has been expanded to include all manner of accoutrements that accompany the shows. Packaging for sale anyone? Does it interest you in the slightest that people have let you know that they find your commercial activities here unacceptable? Seems not.

Still Waiting...

Great to see boxes are going out, but so far the only email I've received is the one about the miracle. At the end it says I'll get shipment information once it leaves the warehouse so I guess mine hasn't left the warehouse yet. Oh well, hopefully next week! Just give me a tracking number so I can get on UPS and watch it make it's way to me!!!

You aren't going to get an email from dead.net that it shipped. You don't need a tracking number to find it on UPS. Just sign up for (free) UPS My Choice. Why did customer service say they would email when they ship? Because they overestimate their own abilities. Don't trust customer service. Trust your friends. Get the UPS account.

Well, any of you here in Yoorp, get your plastic out: you ain't finished paying yet. I just got SMS notification from DHL that Boxzilla has landed in France...but if I want it I'm going to have to pay them 160 euros VAT. Ouch!
