We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Agree with earlier posts., I don't know why someone back in the day didn't awake him to how lousy that sounded? Nevertheless, he does sound much better in recent years as he has gone back to just singing. I am very much enjoying every incarnation of post jerry bands. The playing to me is really good and to me better than some of the inconsistent shows of 80's and 90's. Happy thanksgiving all. I'm an hour from where pilgrims landed. Just saw a pbs special on pilgrims. They really had some nuts to do what they did.

....if you have that glorious box, open it up, pull out 1970, spin disc 1 track 6, pack a bowl, and let Pig & the boyz tell you about a man's world. Careful. It's been known to reach out and grab ya by the collar and shake yer bones....wow....primal indeed. Like I said. Highlight. Wow! ....edit. Yeah, I said I was gonna revisit Dijon, but this damn box spoils me. My compass swung away a few degrees. Landed in the bay area. Could be worse I guess....

rbmunkin - I Give Them To '78

I also have a hard time with anything past the 70s, but really I would say 78 has some stuff I wouldn't want to be without. There are a lot of shows I enjoy in 78 (DP 18, DaP 7 & 15). I also love The Closing of Winterland. While I really dig those three releases from the Spring that I just mentioned, they are more or less the same batch of songs that were being performed with regular virtuosity in 77. The 12/31/78 show is a great performance that sounds great (multi-track) and has some new tunes: Stagger Lee, I Need A Miracle, and From The Heart Of Me, plus the Return Of Dark Star. And to be honest, I like a lot of the Egypt stuff. I don't think the Stagger Lee and Miracle are as quite as good as Winterland, but they're respectable. What is worth the price of admission from Egypt: Jack Straw (great jam and climax, everyone seems to be in tune) New Minglewood Blues (really cool slower version - I can actually keep up with what he's singing, and yes, women DO start looking good after a couple shots of whiskey. Nice barroom piano from Keith throughout) Candyman (nice version with nice tremolo solo from Jerry) Stagger Lee and I Need A Miracle (respectable versions, just not the monsters that we get on The Closing of Winterland) Deal (this was my favorite post-hiatus version for awhile, then DaP 15 was released - Donna sings her ass off good at the end, just like the DaP 15 rendition) Fire On The Mountain (it's biggest crime is being separated from Scarlet Begonias. Nice long version with some extended jamming at the end, a Phil Zone spectacular) Iko Iko (Love it. As good as 5/15/77 and 11/4/77) Shakedown Street (the crown jewel of this release - only official release of Shakedown Street with the Godchauxs. Maybe I had too much too fast.) The Bonus Disc has some cool songs on it, but the performances are little bit loose. And the sound is great throughout, multi-track madness. And of course Keith is the star :) I'm trying to get better acquainted with Road Trips '78. I've only listened to it a few times, and my first impressions are that the sound is not great, and that the performance is a little loose. I also prefer the non-slide Bob Weir of '78. The only time I recall that it bolstered a song is Stagger Lee from 12/31, and with all of the guests present that night, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't him. And don't forget - it's only in '78 that Estimated Prophet truly comes into its own, as Jerry's early solo has been extended from 20 seconds to 2 minutes. Dick's Picks 18 is the place to go for Estimated BOAT (although DaP 15 is a close runner up). Happy Thanksgiving all you Dead Turkeys

1970 Winterland

Agree about The Other One. Wow. I still like the Harper College one better, but they are neck and neck.This is my kind of Dead, which is why I have trouble with anything after 1977. Not a jot of Dead past that is anything like this. Very little from 71-77 is either, but there are at least many good points there. So that explains a bit why I'm critical of the Dead past 77 - it just depends it seems to me on what kind of Deadhead one is. I'm into their acid test roots. This kind of The Other One is how I compare anything else they do. So it's a high water mark for sure! I'm just not a "Hell in a Bucket" kind of guy.

1970 Winterland

I also really love this Winterland show. What is it about 30 Trips 1970? Oh, I'm glad you asked. Start with the sound, it's probably the best audio representation from the year. But once you get past that, it's hot hot hot, right out of the starting gate. Highlights for me: Cold Rain & Snow, and this one is the best version I've heard from the '69/'70 years. I imagine this is a tough song to get a great two-track mix down on, because of the harmony vocals. Most two-track mixes are left victim to an unbalanced soundboard (think Thelma), but this one is just exactly right....heh! Very solid China Cat Sunrider that also has great sounding backup vocals. Blistering guitar work from Bobby and Jerry on Technical Difficulties. Pigpen blows the door down like the Big Bad Wolf on Man's World. Wow, do yourself a favor... Candyman is worth the price of admission. Who invited the Allman Brothers anyway? Crypticals, Jam, and The Other One - I am going to quote my bestest Dead Head buddy. This is what he had to say: "....I switched it up to Winterland 70, and then I got put in the replay mode. I got hit by the best that's it for the other one that I have ever heard. So I played CD 1, then CD 2. Again, again, and again. It's been like this all week...." Dancing in the Streets - TIGHTEN UP. Fantastic jam vehicle. Great primal Lovelight to close the show, with just enough NFA. They were really captured in their Primal glory on this one.

1970 Winterland & Foghat

I just listened again, twice, to the 30 Trips show from 1970. All I can say is that the second disc is awesome! Highlights for me are the "Jam" and the "Dancin" which goes to a different place then usual. Great stuff. I have yet to find a Trip that is not excellent. Lovin' them all. I agree with Unkle Sam. The early Foghat is tremendous. When I was in college these first couple of albums got lots of play, especially when we were pulling all nighters, which was way more often then you would think! Back then classes were only a small part of my college experience. Guess I still pay for that today but boy did I have enough fun for several life times! Rock on

You guys are missing the best that that band had to offer when you don't listen to the first album, simply entitled "Foghat" or the second album, with the rock and the roll on the cover. Funny story, when that second album came out a friend of mine asked me "what is that on the front cover, a stone and a biscuit?' lol, when I told him it was a rock and a roll, he had a puzzled look on his face for about a second, then he got it and laughed out loud. Listened to both of these many times in my travels about the country back in the early seventies, it was great driving music. As far as the usb, don't cancel, wait till it ships, then ask for a refund and keep the product, after all this, you deserve it.

my take on the whole delay debacle

Since there was a delay in both products, I figured it was something common to both. I thought from the beginning, it was something as simple as the typical 1 or 2 second pause between songs. When they were QA'n song to song, they did not notice this, but when they played an entire cd, it was apparent. They checked the all the files and saw that it happened on all formats. Since the CD box had one set of files to be fixed with 6500 orders to fill and Bolt had double the amount of files to fix (HD & mp3) with only 800 orders to fill, they corrected the boxset first. Compound this with the big 50th celebration and all the other projects in the works and fitting the rework in Rhino's existing schedule (or who their vendors schedule), these timelines got bumped out big time, but rhino did not want other unrelated projects to get delayed. This is all speculation on my part. If they knew the delay was going to be pushed out significantly for the Bolt, the should've waited on charging customers. But if they had done that, the Bolt purchasers would've been upset they were excluded from the streaming. It was a no win situation from dead.net, but they made it a lot worse with their lack of communication. People waiting for the Bolt should be pissed and rightfully so.

The dimensions of this box are as follows: 13.75 x 9.25 x 8.50 (figure it out yourselves) The box number is on the top of the scroll, mine is 6193. The discs are packaged in paper sleeves that are about the same stock (thickness) as the "To Terrapin ... 5/28/77" in wells in the box, 6 wells, five shows each. The 1968 show is a single disc, while the others are 2 & 3 discs per show. On 11/14/73, the last 3 songs are on disc 2, they are: M&MU, GDTRFB, Saturday Night. The book has an outside faux leather cover. It is much easier to read than the .pdf in my opinion. The artwork on the outside of the box is BEAUTIFUL! Each side represents each of the 4 seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, with GD songs represented in the artwork.Total weight with outside shipping box: about 16 pounds. You will get yours soon. Please have patience. THEN YOU WILL ENJOY THIS BOX!

Come to those who wait...my wait ended just a little while ago, when my UPS guy delivered the box (with great curiosity about the stealie on the box). Shipping box appears in good condition so presumably contents are as well. But I have to finish up some work before I can get back to it...damn clients! I'll admit I was getting worried, but even with dead.net not fixing the address as I requested in the initial confirmation request a month ago, it still made it here. So excited, the pass is from 5/23/93 shoreline amphitheater and the ticket is 12/12/94 Oakland. Also, so no wars are started, I will be likely selling some of these as I'll never listen to them. For now I'm going to enjoy the 70's with a Dogfish 61 minute IPA.

Box 4026 arrived today at 3:15 PM. The UPS driver saw the stealie on the packing box and asked me what was in it. I told him and he said he had been to Chicago for the Fare Thee Well shows. My ticket is for Oct. 28, 1991 and the backstage pass is for June 16, 1993. I've been playing 4/5/77 while looking through the book. My letter didn't make the cut, so, I thought why not show it here? It was July 27, 1973 and I had been looking forward to "Summer Jam" at Watkins Glen since it had been announced. I wasn't able to leave Brooklyn, NY earlier than Friday night because of work, so, my friends and I missed the sound check concert on Friday. We drove west through Pennsylvania and then headed north to the Finger Lakes region in NY to avoid the traffic on the main roads in NY. We were in four vehicles and numbered eighteen Grateful Dead fans in total, not one of us with a ticket but we hoped to score them at the site. A short distance after we crossed the border between PA and NY, we were stopped by NY State Troopers, who had set up a check point on an overpass which led to a road below that would take us into Watkins Glen. I was driving the first vehicle in the caravan, my orange VW Beetle. When I stopped at the checkpoint, I was told by the Trooper that the road was closed and I needed to turn around and go back down the road on which we had been driving. When I asked, "What if we have tickets for the concert?" The Trooper said, "What part of the road is closed, don't you understand?" Not wanting to antagonize him, I turned my Bug around and we drove back to the other vehicles in our caravan to let them know what was happening. We drove a short distance back down the road and pulled over to discuss our options when a NY Trooper pulled up behind us in his car and told us, "If you don't have any place to stay for the night, we can put you in jail. Now, get out of NY state." After being kicked out of NY, we drove back into PA and being tired from the drive through the night, pulled into a field off the road to rest and decide what we should do. We weren't there for more than thirty minutes when a PA trooper pulled up and told us we were on private property and couldn't stay there. When we told him what had happened and still would like to get to Watkins Glen for the concert, he told us about another route into Watkins Glen that wasn't closed. It apeared he had decided the best way to get rid of us was to send us back into NY. The PA trooper's directions led us back into NY and we were able to drive right into Watkins Glen where we parked our vehicles and walked a short distance to the racetrack. There were no fences or anyone taking tickets and we walked right in, set up our tents and checked out the stage. There was a reported million people there and it certainly seemed that many were attendance to me. It rained during The Band's set and we got under a tarp we had attached to a chain link fence. We had plenty of food and were dry because of the tarp. We even had enough room to offer shelter to some Deadheads from Ohio who had no shelter of their own. When the concert resumed. many had left because of the soaking rain and I was able to walk up to the front of the stage where I enjoyed the rest of the concert. Just to let everyone know they're arriving! Unfortunately I can't tell you anything about it since I have to wait until CHRISTMAS! I keep telling myself "patience is a virtue…patience is a virtue". I hope everyone's arrives shortly "just exactly perfect".

The Eagle Has Landed...

... here in Louisville, KY. I never did get an email from dead.net confirming that it had been shipped, but it arrived at 2:30 this afternoon. Thanks to rrot for the UPS My Choice tip (you'd think I'd known about that, given that UPS has a major hub here in Louisville and basically runs the show). No "Miracle" on my scroll, but it was a pretty low number.. #0142. Ticket was from 10/27/1991 - Oakland Coliseum. Backstage Pass was from 6/21/1993 - Deer Creek. Overall, it's gorgeous. Totally worth the wait. The box is sweet. The book is very nice. I love the velvet on the insides of the box, and the total size is just about perfect. Now I have to find a good place to put it so that my kids won't screw it up!

got "the box" today, and must admit to being stunned that there are not spindles for the discs. At a $700 price point that should have been an obvious feature. Pulling discs out of paper only leads to scratches, but it's more the principle of the thing. I'm not trying to say it's not a fantastic piece overall, but not having disc spindles is a major flaw imo. And to think I thought the shows would be in actual jewel cases. lol.anyway, sorry for the vent, but for $700............. you gotta be kidding me.

It arrived this afternoon!

I was getting anxious as I hadn't received an e-mail indicating the box set had been shipped, but I had a feeling that today would be the day. This morning I went to the gym, it being a gym day, and my wife was kind enough to stay at home in case the UPS truck came while I was gone. It didn't, but shortly after I got home and my wife went to run errands there was a knock on the door and there stood my friendly UPS delivery man holding the box! I was surprised that the cardboard box that the box came in has the SYF logo and the band members names on it. Nice touch! As to the box set itself, it is a work of art and nicely put together. I didn't get a miracle scroll, but that doesn't matter much. My box number is 1798. The ticket I received is from Cal Expo Amphitheatre, May 27, 1993 which was a Rex Foundation benefit. My backstage pass is from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, February 20, 1995. It has three trout depicted on it which is appropriate as I am a devout trout fisherman! The coolest thing of all though is that the 1976 show represented in the box is from Cobo Arena in Detroit on October 3, 1976 which just happens to be my very first Grateful Dead concert!! :-) One final note, my wife hasn't even inquired how much it cost. LOL!

You may have noticed that us lucky folks who have received delivery stopped posting after announcing that good news. Well, I've been listening since yesterday afternoon (head phones while exercising and enjoying the outdoors, big rig inside), and here's my quick first impressions of what has arrived: The box, book, scroll, etc. are incredible. I hope TPTB help anyone who's product is less than perfect, but mine is good and I appreciate all the effort that went into it. My strictly personal opinion of the first 5+ shows is this: the early stuff is musically fulfilling and very educational regarding the evolution of this particular group of musicians. Each show that Dave picked is lots of fun to listen to, and, with the exception of a little buzz here and there in the early ones, the sound quality is stellar. We are very lucky to have 21st Century sound quality from the middle of the 20th Century. Thank you, Bear, and thank you, also, the current team preparing these shows for release. The only thing close to negative I can say is that Live/Dead is still the champ when it comes to early Dead (along with the Fillmore West box or 3-CD set). And then we come to 1970, etc. That's why I only have a few minutes. Got to get back to listening--it's too good to stop!
