Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music covering 15 years of Grateful Dead history, from 1969, 1973 and 1984.

Our first selection this week is music from 6/28/69 in Santa Rosa, CA, where we have this fine set of music that shows the band on the cusp of transitioning from the psychedelic primal beasts of Live/Dead to the countrified Dead of Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, featuring Slewfoot, Silver Threads And Golden Needles, Mama Tried, Me And My Uncle, Doin' That Rag > High Time, King Bee, Sittin On Top Of The World, Turn On Your Love Light.

Next is a nice sequence of classic 1973 Grateful Dead Seattle on 6/26/73, featuring China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Loser ; Playing In The Band.

Lastly this week is music from 6/29/84 at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, OH, featuring Scarlet Begonias > Touch Of Grey ; Dear Mr. Fantasy > Man Smart (Woman Smarter). This is the precursor to the Scarlet>Touch>Fire trio they'd play twice in the next two weeks, on 7/3/84 and 7/13/84, and is also just the second version of Dear Mr. Fantasy, which had debuted two weeks earlier on 6/14/84 at Red Rocks.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

The 1973 selection bears no resemblance to the announced setlist.

Its actually the 1st half of Set 2 from 6/30/87. You can find the 6/26/73 tunes in an earlier Taper Section.

....to expect '73, and get the most tired versions of the most tired Dead set-list (Scarlet-Fire/Estimated-Eyes) from "those years".....Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!

This is almost too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence! The selection from 6/26/73 was featured in July 22 - July 28, 2013, where the first selection was a standalone Lovelight from 6/28/69! And the third selection was from Merriweather on 6/27/84 - two days before #3 from this week. Is mr. Lemieux in repeat mode, or are we getting close to the bottom of the barrel?

DEFINITELY not 1973. (We pause to consider the cultural evolution by which large numbers of people can hear the tuning and go, nope, not 1973.) Anyway, I have passed this to the tech folks. Meanwhile, 1987 had some fine moments!
