"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

ROLLINGSTONE.COM SONG PREMIERE AND EXCLUSIVE DAVID LEMIEUX INTERVIEW
Head on over to Rollingstone.com for the very first listen of "Morning Dew" 9/18/87 Madison Square Garden, David Fricke's exclusive interview with archivist David Lemieux, and the reveal of 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN's '69 and '84 shows.

*Helpful hints for using your USB:

Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

Not that I know anything... But, I would not be surprised if they still release 05/08/77 - Barton Hall - as an unlimited release in August like they did with Wake Up and SSDD... Probably wrong...

Sorry I'm back on it. The China>Rider transition starts off a bit iffy and then totally rips. The Dark Star is a one of the lightest DS's I've ever heard, plus it's a Phil Phest. When I say it's one of the lightest I mean it is very airy and light and doesn't take to you to the Dark places that say the version on Steppin' Out England 72 does. Not to detract from that one. This one is just soft. And I love it. Biiiiilllllllll ! Lastly maybe. If there was ever a show that Jerry played a multitude or plethora of 'runs' then this might be it. It's like he said I'm going to go out tonight and play runs and practice scales. And he did.

@zxtttxz: About that Scarlet > Fire from Dick's Picks 13
Dick’s Picks Volume 13 is a complete concert from their May 6, 1981, performance at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. The release also contains a hidden track, a thirty-five minute version of "Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain," from November 1, 1979, from the same venue. Yes it is truly hidden; it’s located just after the "Saint of Circumstance." By the way, I got this from the "Best Of" website, which has LOTS of great info regarding almost all of the Grateful Dead live releases. http://www.thebestofwebsite.com/Bands/Grateful_Dead/Grateful_Dead_Live…

Listening to June 9th from Winterland '77 box now, but I have to say if I had to pick one release I go to most, it would be Dick's 19. Something I can't put my finger on... mellow, great song selection, it just makes me happy after a hard day. That's what it is about, right?

DP 19 is probably my favorite release. I couldn't agree more. That DS>MLB>MD is other worldly. Some of the Europe shows do that, as does DP36, DP16, 2/28/69 and a couple others. rdewr, really? wow..

I usually enjoy reading the comments on here. Spurs my interest in digging out something old. Like the Egypt set that someone posted about a little earlier. I was about to listen to that (I love the pop-up pyramid when you open the cd pack) but then I noticed a single disc in a jewel case with no insert. It's Dick's Pick's Vol 13 Disc 2. I vaguely remember getting that when I had some problem with something I got from dead.net a few years ago, and they sent me a replacement, and I guess someone stuck this extra disc in there just to be cool. So then I was looking in Deadbase at 5/6/81 (Dick's Pick 13) and Dick Latvala wrote the Deadbase review (Deadbase Vol VIII) and that got me all excited to hear this long jam with Caution and Spanish Jam. Imagine my disappointment when the music stopped after Saint of Circumstance. I guess there was a third disc in D's P 13. Anyway, I went to remove the disc and noticed it was still clicking off seconds. Turns out there's a hidden Scarlet/Fire on there. All of that just to ask - does anyone know what date the Scarlet/Fire is? I checked in Deadbase and it doesn't appear to be from the next show. It's very enjoyable. And now I'm on to Hartford 10/14/83. While continuing to wonder about that hidden Scarlet/Fire.

Can't stay away from DP19 10/19/73. Seems like when I've reached a saturation point two to three times per year this always turns up. Not sure if I'm changing or if the music actually is on this set. Every time I listen to this show since the day I bought it I pick up on something else that blows me away. I really can't say that about every release though DaP11 comes to mind on this front as does RT 6/18/74 WOS. Back to DP19. Listen to the whole set but check out Billy and Phil on Don't Ease! I wonder if songs like this and MAMU sort of put the guys back on track. Maybe some jitters in the first couple of songs in a show and then boom! A three or four minute jaunt where they could gel and find each other and even things out. Lock in if you will. I'll spare the rest of my review because I've gone on before about disc 3. One of my favorite Dews. Anybody that hasn't got this or has not heard this and wants a perfectly not perfect Dead show should pick this up. It's a gift that keeps on giving.

I received my box last Friday at 1:47 pm. The email with tracking info arrived Friday at 7:42 pm. Also as far as ripping, I put in the comments: YYYY-MM-DD-## town, state, venue ##= set list number. Then in iTunes I sort on comments and get all the tunes in chrono order. For studio albums, I use release date.

I probably should have thought of this sooner, but jrf68's post got me to thinking that an individual show could make a great gift, especially for someone who was at the show. An old friend of mine that's not a deadhead, but does enjoy them, was at the 5/16/81 show. And he lives in Texas, too. But, jrf68, unless your name is Michelle, my friend is not your brother so there is no risk of us both buying this show for him :) If I can get it for a reasonable price, PM me.

Still do not have my box either in Georgia. When most of you got yours last week, I called and was assured I would get it today. Didn't get it today and called and was told that it may be a while before mine was shipped, but that they would do something special for me. Got an email a few minutes later letting me know that since I was being patient about not getting it when the rest of you did, they would let me stream the box for free. Really?!?! Like the rest of you, trying to stay positive and wait for the box. Kind of weird that I ordered it on the day that they announced it and still don't have it while guys in Europe are already getting theirs. Wish they knew more about what is going on at dead.net. The wait will be worth it.

Finished ripping almost all the CDs to my computer. Had a couple shows that played better on another computer, but the freakin' last disc of the 1995 Salt Lake City show won't play on any of my computers. Looks to have a little bit of disc rot or something on the edges. haha..the last disc. Anyway, check those CDs. Wouldn't want to find this problem 3 or 4 months from now.

So one box for jrf, the second just sold on ebay for the exact price of his plane ticket. No need to rush over to steve's place.

There have been many recent cases where overseas folks have received their shipments before continental US folks. I know how it feels to be waiting while other folks are enjoying the bounty. And it sucks. Best wishes on a tomorrow delivery for everyone.

So I'm a little confused, because of the frequent mixed messages here- the 90, 92, 93 and 95 shows are still available- and the Jerry signed lp is included with a package deal. How much for the Dobermans (sans shotgun). Or maybe a 92 show and one doberman? Peace, love, some Dobermans and a shotgun- Man I miss the 60's.

A quick question about the dogs. I did not know they were part of the deal. Are either or both of the Dobermans signed by Jerry? Or Phil or any of the original band members or are they just signed by Vince or are they unsigned?

...I feel (felt) your angst this past long (holiday) weekend, but, with absolutely no notice, and while completely off radar at UPSMyChoice, 30 Rock debuted in the Dark Heart of Appalachia today. Based on criticisms, I had expected a balsa contrivance secured for shipping with only a few drops of Mr. Ed destined to disintegrate upon contact with O2 at opening. Far from it. Not Samsonite; but, at a gross price per disc that we near-universally agree is fair without discount for packaging, anything more is simply unrealistic. This is the new bar. Moreover, having collected every official release except TOO (a Spring Too Far), or any of the "greatest hits" comps, and in light of the comprehensive coverage provided through this production opus, I now withdraw from compulsory purchases. Thank you Rhino & GDP - it's been a phenomenal trip! See y'all on the discussion threads./peace, K Edit: I received a ticket for 2/26/77 and a backstage pass for 6/21/80 with a handwritten sticky attached that read, "KC, these are my tentative selections for numbers 17 & 18 - your thoughts? Love, DL". Absolutely and categorically untrue, but if wishing made it so, I'd be violating the purchasing moratorium in fast order!

By my count, there was exactly one miracle box (which was immediately offered for sale @ $500) and 2 or 3 Miracle scrolls.

Someone did, scroll though the posts. Maybe some kind soul will repost it here. Folks were grabbing them from the .pdf download. Even better would be if Dead.net made them available here. hint hint.

Wow, a lot noise going on about some Australian guy (or gal, or guys), can't follow it, probably better if I don't. Anyway, I am waiting (I guess until the beginning of November) for the USB set, and restraining myself from listening to any of the streaming sets. My question (may sound odd, but give it a read), which show has the worst sound in the set? That is the one that I want to start with. Why? Because I don't know where I want to start, and I already thought about bouncing back and forth starting form the middle. From what I've read, it looks like one of the early '80s shows has the poorest sound (on the CD). Also, I am curious about if there is a difference between the poorest sounding CD and its USB (supposedly high res) version b/c I was told they were separately mastered. If anyone is interested in a virtual shoot out, send a PM, we can trade copies and compare. In the unlikely event that I get more than a couple of responses, I'll pick two at random. Glad everyone is loving this set (aside from a few defects, not surprising).

30 Trips arrived in Paris! It is approaching. Home delivery is scheduled for tomorrow. I will take a day off to take delivery of the magic box. I'm overjoyed! Wilfred, No, I have not proposed or submitted article on the show Zenith. I attended the show on 28 October. That of October 27 has great moments, like China> Rider.

"Also, I am curious about if there is a difference between the poorest sounding CD and its USB (supposedly high res) version..." With the USB you should be able to hear the hiss and distortion more clearly.
