"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

At this point, I am pretty well resigned to waiting it out knowing that someday I'll be pleasantly surprised with the USB package on my porch. It is tough going to the mailbox each night and seeing packages from my wife's internet shopping addiction that maybe could possibly be the usb, but are not. It's like when I really wanted Mattel Electronics Football I for X-Mas, thought it was under the tree, but the box contained socks instead. As for the "family" issue, although I have never had a problem with rhino before now, I can't see them as family. While I like their niche and buy just about every dead release, they are, after all, a subsidiary of one of the 4 behemoth music companies, Warner Music Group (according to my brief internet research on Wikipedia). So I think they are well equipped to deal with a few BBB complaints. Since this was supposed to be a birthday gift last July, my mother may want to know what is going on with her gift. The last thing anybody wants is a determined 70ish Quaker retired elementary reading teacher coming after them. Fair warning now given...

I had a major problem with my 30 Trips box. I contacted MaryE (the mod for dead.net) and she contacted Dr. Rhino. Took a couple weeks but I now have a new 30 Trips box, and Dr. Rhino just mailed replacement cases for two shows that had box cutter slices. Honestly, I have had so many bad experiences with Dead.net customer service over the last few years that I didn't expect much, but once I contacted Mary she took care of it. I did call customer service two or three times and got the same type of answers you did. On a side note..I placed an order last night for the Studio Vinyl box, but no greeting card was added. Plus, I never received a memorabilia ticket with my last order. Called customer service and since the order was about to ship they couldn't do anything about it..but I did get free shipping on my next order (after November). edit because of the post below: I think the people a Dead.net do give a shit, but they're just not well informed on what to say. They take the orders and give out refunds. Almost all the other problems are forwarded to Dr. Rhino. I doubt they have any idea what the problem with the USB is. If you feel you need to go after someone, then you should be going after Rhino.

I agree that this community has a familial aspect to it, but Rhino or Dead.net Customer Service? You've got to be kidding! They are businesses. In America, we expect a certain level of integrity from businesses that we do business with. If you deal with a business that does not deliver integrity, either through their product, service or communications, then we have the BBB (Better Business Bureau) to try to warn our fellow consumers that all is not right with a particular business. Businesses don't want to have a negative report with the BBB. Which should motivate most of them to provide business practices that keep them off the "sh*t list". If you've dealt with Dead.net customer service, you'll know that most of them fall into one of the following categories: (1) don't give a shit, (2) completely stupid, (3) liars, etc. Why do you feel the need to protect them? Are you an employee of one of these companies. If you're not, apparently, you don't mind the goodwill among the GD community being completely taken advantage of here. Does being family mean they have the right to f*ck you up the ass! I expect more from family! As someone pointed out some time back, would anyone accept what is happening here with any other business. Doubtful! I didn't order the USB version, I ordered Boxzilla, and had problem after problem getting attention for resolution of my damaged box. It wasn't until I got marye involved that anything happened at all. It made me f*cking crazy. I just can't imagine what you USB folks are going through. If I lived in the town where Rhino or Dead.net customer service resided, I would feel compelled to show up there and let them know personally that they SUCK! But for those that can't do that, there is the BBB. Hang in there USB folks. And mojobrojo, I don't mean to jump on your sh*t, but your suggestion that it's inappropriate to contact the BBB is seriously questionable.

The USB people get 24 bit files. The people that got the box get CDs (16 bit files). You're basically paying $700 for a better sounding product. Not sure you can hear the difference but that is why the USB is the same price as the box.

Man the posts have been awesome the last 48 hours, thanks to all around the world! Feels like I am sitting on top of it. Sure hope all still waiting have a pleasant surprise soon. Do not wait on a shipping notice. As you have read over and over, most did not get anything. My shipping notice arrived an hour after the box arrived. I had stated last Tuesday (?) that last week should be the shipping date as after 10/2 they started printing labels. I also said if they shipped 1,000 a day, that would be a lot. I think they probably hit 2,000 a day but that still puts some people 2-3 days past first day of shipping and is why some in Japan got theirs before the Southern Heads...Yeehaw to You. As far as tickets I am sure they are 100% real. A few other things to consider. 1) The printers could easily print duplicates as has been mentioned to make sure the GDTS had plenty. 2) I think it is in the book with this box...but they show some of the operational side of shows. They have a breakdown of how many GDTS tix sold versus other outlets; and even present shows in later years of the crushing onslaught not selling out. Was not expecting to see that; but if they had 18,000 seats in Michigan and sold 17,700 that is 300 extras. I have no doubt these are from these types of circumstance. I also "feel" the vault still has plenty of tickets stored. 3) I have the Warlocks box and the tickets to the show. The box tickets are smaller than the originals, say about 75% of the actual tickets. Can't wait to read more Christmas day excitement! Edit: And I have other GDTS tickets that look like they were just printed yesterday. Took an old Christmas cookie tin and put them in there. No air or water to get to them and stored in the bottom of the closet to make sure they were not disturbed. Now getting to them has become an exercise for Indiana Jones.

I am finished ripping and on to the flac making stage of my CD backups. The box is back in the bag and the original shipping container and is already in storage. I did take the ticket and pass out and have them in my Deadbase 50 as bookmarks, they are real. What's their provenance? The show didn't sell out through mail order and the unsold dated tix were put in a warehouse before finding a home with Nick at the GD archives. As for the passes, better to have too many than not enough, so they probably did 100 passes for every show, just in case. I bet they have lots of extra backstage passes in the archive. Still haven't listened to any of it yet except the stream of the 1981 patch to confirm it was there. It is a major disappointment as I had hoped to finally hear the rest of the set's SBD that didn't circulate. I guess it really doesn't exist. Quick thoughts and notes. All of my CDs were there and correct, 2 had scratches, 1 was a "mechincal gouge" and the other a "swirley" on one of those middle CDs from putting it in the sleeve. Both CDs ripped without issue, so I'll keep them, but CD 2 of the 1977 show has a touch of "disk rot" or that "wave" thing mentioned earlier in the thread and the final track is unreadable. Thanks to the friend that already hooked me up with their CD that did rip. I will try to get it replaced by Rhino, but it's already packed away. The names go in order of joining and along with the seasons on the box and why Pigpen is split, so that the names begin in Spring and play out over the year. I like the panel artwork more than the names. I am happy TC made the box. What is the difference between the red and blue interiors? Are there more "flaws" with a certain color interior?

I posted earlier in the week that my box came on 10/9, the 26th anniversary of my last show. The box looks great, just a touch of peel on the back of one side near the hinge, no big thang at all. Ticket is 10/27/91 Oakland Pass is 6/11/93 Buckeye Lake - love the pass as it has a Space Head on it. A skeleton in a space suit flying over the world with a tether. I love it because I worked at NASA on 6/11/93. Double Yeehaw! Scroll Number: 0033 Red Velvet Is that right hand moon Ernest Borgnine? - Cabbie from Escape from New York

If you can try the CDs on other computers. I had a few that EAC could not read on my primary computer. Tried them on another and they were fine. Disc 3 of the 1995 Salt Lake City show would not play on 2 of my computers, put played and ripped fine on a 3rd (new laptop)..even though it looks like a little disc rot around the edges. Have had this happen to me before. My primary computer just hates the Road Trips series, and a few non-Dead CDs, but is normally fine.

Charlie 3, Glad to hear of a Montana arrival! I was beginning to worry, still waiting in Missoula, no shipping notice either. I had it shipped to PO Box so UPS "innovations" was involved, probably delays things. Hope it comes before the weekend, my lady is out of town this weekend, it would be a perfect time to crank some GOGD! Love hearing everyone's unboxing stories, I've avoided the video and streams for maximum effect but my patience is waning with each passing day, guess I'll make one more trip to the PO today after work, think I've checked it at least 10 times since the initial email. Has anyone had one delivered to a PO Box yet?

Funny how the box got to Japan & Europe before California. I did grab one of the last ones on Spetember 21st, afte the 2nd "sold Out" notice, so maybe they did ship them in some kind of order. Everything looks good, but I did not get a show ticket, only a backstage pass. Minor detail, really. I started with 1982, but quickly bailed after hearing Jerry badly mumbling the opening lines :-) I'll go back to that one later, now onto 10-27-79 which sounds GREAT!

Thanks to all who have sent me private messages for your kind words and support! Very awesome. There are more than messages than I have time to reply to at this moment, but want to express my appreciation for your support. We all love this band and the vast majority of folks are respectful to them as well as those who work for them, by simply being honest and not taking or giving away something that legally doesn't belong to them. By showing simple respect and courtesy to tptb, both here in their house, and elsewhere, we as fans can continue to look forward to many years of new releases by tptb. Often times, doing the RIGHT thing isn't popular in certain circles. Doing the right thing, being honest and being respectful yields the greatest rewards in life. Thank you again! There are many many awesome people here.

The eagle landed here in the good old UK a day earlier than DHL had advised. I'm sure my octogenarian neighbours to whom it was delivered had no idea what was going on from the logos on the outer box, but they were cool, as always, in taking delivery of my occasional packages. Therefore, and even though they won't read this, a big thanks to Michael and Margaret. As it was late last night before I collected it from them, I only had time for a quick peek, and the whole thing looks a thing of beauty. I'll worry about the detail later. The music therefore has only just started tonight. As with the '72 box, I'll probably go through it year by year in order. Even as I write, Pigpen is blowing some mean harp in San Francisco. I was only four at the time! So to everybody else out there tuning in to one or other of these shows, a hearty greetings from the flatlands. Happy listening, and thanks for all the talk on this thread, which has kept us all going for the last couple of months!

The Centrum 10/21/83 "Space" is sweet. I always loved the 10/14/83 "Space" (Dick's 6) and this one is a worthy companion. A lovely, spacious 15 minutes. A hot "Cassidy", too -typical for the early 80's. Weir is clearly having fun in the PITB jam!

AndrewR, Good stuff! I did notice the outer box, i carefully pealed off my shipping stickers and have another Dead box to do something with ;-). Reading through the Deadhead's stories in the book has gotten my inner Hippie out and shining again. I'm spending idle moments at work thinking about which show will be tonight. i like a previous poster's idea of not looking at the setlists, and just putting the show on to play throughout. thanks for that suggestion. Peace love and happiness people.

Maybe this is known and I am on the outside looking in. WOW!!! How awesome to get that 66 Shakedown. I was listening on Tuesday, feeling very righteous indeed. And I hear Jerry say Shakedown. I was like what, put down everything, you might be hallucinating. Continued on through Midnight Hour. But my mind was restless, so I pondered. Went to bed...tossed and turned. Last night, get home from work...trying still to put my head back on. This night is one to retrench and patch my bones. Started looking through the 50th Deadbase. Just as the kids say to day...surfin. Go back to the very beginning...flipping pages and think I see a Shakedown. So as this is the early stuff I go back to see with intentional purpose. Sure enough "Otis Takes a Shakedown Cruise." Page 25 of the new Deadbase. Awesome a 66 Shakedown. So the interesting part is I was not hallucinating...promise ossifer. Please read the little write up. It is basically about the title to this song. They say that you can hear them mutter something about Otis on a 1966 tape. I think from May. They are explaining the song "You don't have to ask." Well the rule goes that two witnesses make the matter true. So if there is a tape with the band mumbling about Shakedown or something, the second witness would be these just released tapes. You can clearly hear Phil (Maybe) say Otis. Then I think it is Jer who says "Otis Takes A Shakedown Cruise." 66 Shakedown! Now funny thing DL still labelled it "You Don't Have To Ask." So from my standpoint, I have been defrauded. Haha NO! But should the title be changed to Shakedown? Absolutely and Positively Yes! Expect my Newly minted disks soon. Smile And DB50 was supposed to have already been updated. Edit: OOps it can be heard at the end of Gangster of Love, before it moves to Shakedown Crusie.

Boxset has landed! Vught, Holland #5977One Day earlier than DHL expected Ticket: Oakland Coliseum October 30, 1991 Backstage Pass: Coliseum Arena, Charlotte March 23, 1995 I'm not interested in the tickets though. Boxset looks fantastic! The Music is even better. 24 hours after arrival I'm listening to the 66 show; great! So is 73. And 95. And now I'm only on 1/10th of the trips! The moment I ordered this I knew was in for something special. No MIRACLE over here except for the best ever boxset in Music ever launched to be my companion for the coming year (or even longer) 'to digest'. Thnx everybody who made this thing happen

Not sure you will ever imagine the years of Joy this will provide. Thanks to the fellas for having the wisdom to put people in place that love the music and make it a true gift.

I've also been meaning to say... I am a man with, perhaps, not a lot to offer. I am of humble means. But I am willing to order a copy of Spring Too as a dowry.

I say to all of you, I bet it has shipped. I do not think the communication systems between UPS and especially DHL has updated or communicated the way it is supposed to (with us or dead.net). I know about DHL as I have gotten music from European providers that shipped to the USA and the tracking was horrible. The majority of us here did not get any updates (yes I know the UPS whatever choice folks did) but I still say that most that have received boxes were much more like kids on Christmas wondering if Santa had come.

Now that these boxes have been greatly distributed around the world, I'm betting there's a lot of this going on out there... https://youtu.be/n2ZpsbGr7s8

as someone who didn't get the box I am really enjoying reading all the giddy comments from those who did. Please keep it up and hopefully start giving intimate show and or song breakdowns. How good is the 75 show? Is the 72 show on par with dick's 11, 23 and 36? Inquiring minds want to know. Ha. Hope you all have a Grate weekend! Heading to Chattanooga to run the 4 bridges half marathon on Sunday and enjoy the changing colors of fall. Peace to all.

If you are a Cubs fan, congrats. This year I am for certain! Don't remember reading about any of the PO Boxers getting theirs yet. Have been many several (if that is a number) state that they had the UPS Innovations Shipping. They realized that you have to add 2-3 days for that hand over. It will get there. It will take a year easy to thoroughly digest. You are not falling behind. Take a Deep Breath (we all feel the frustration), the Cubs are already in the NLCS.

No problem. I have relatives in Billings and have been to Missoula. Just awesome territory. The relatives take folks on the long hunts...camping for about a week and hunting crazy stuff. Go Grizzlies! maybe?

Those of us in Georgia may be waiting a little longer. Just got off the phone with a Dead.net person who told me that those of us in Georgia and Florida seem to be the ones who primarily aren't getting the box. They suggested emailing Rhino at drrhino@rhino.com and taking it up with them. The wait continues...

Love it! Thanks to all who suggested. See y'all there soon-ish. Now, if the &%$# UPS truck would just stop at my house! Oh - Steve, Atlanta, just fine except for one thing.

hey Steve, hope it gets there by party time tomorrow or sooner. I got the E72 write up from you. Sorry I have not responded back. I just have struggled to digest all of that. I bet I have received 80 official releases just since they announced the 50th anniversary. I will get back to you, thanks!
