Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

    The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

    The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

    The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

    Thanks for that link @frankparry. Can't say I'm impressed with the design of the 4-CD box, but I'll bet the 80-disc box will be awesome. And what a monster it'll have to be. Just look at 80 CD's in your collection and see how much space they take up! I'm betting there will be a cardboard slipcase for each show. Or maybe it'll be in the style of a book. It looks like that's what they went for with the 4-disc set. If that's the case, it may be hard for folks to sell off single shows as we've seen on this board and on eBay. Besides which, I think the idea of breaking up the box defeats the vision that Dave had: i.e. taking in the 30-year journey that was the life of the Grateful Dead. So if you're someone who loves the 70's Dead, this may be an opportunity to have some later era music in your collection. And if you're an 80's/90's lover, then this is the chance to go back a bit further. My story is this: I started listening to the Grateful Dead with the album "Without A Net," so Brent has always sounded great to me. I never did get to see Brent, though. I saw the Dead 4 times -- 3 in '91 and once in '93. I was at the 2 MSG shows before the 9/10/91 show in the box. Then I stopped listening for years. It wasn't until my son was born 3-1/2 years ago that I started listening again. Man, I was HOOKED! I tracked down every Road Trips and Bonus Disc over the next year, and then started in on the Dave's Picks and newer box sets as they came out. Despite my expanding collection, I was still pretty stuck in the late 80's and early 90's. But I slowly worked my way backwards. '77 and '74 offered ample rewards for my listening, but earlier than that was a little too much for me. Kinda raw at times. And Pigpen took some getting used to. So it took me a while to get into '72 and all that the European tour has going for it. Now I can dig it. On the other side of the Dead's career, I shied away from post '91 stuff. Without Hornsby, what magic did the band still have up their sleeves? Then I pulled out th '93 Cal Expo Road Trips this year. I've gotta tell you, it's good. Way better than I thought it should be. So when I first saw this box set, I thought, "Way too expensive," and "Too much stuff that I don't want." But the more I thought about it, the more excited I became to hear those shows from years I had shied away from - pre '72 and post '91. I think the box will be an amazing opportunity to experience the full scope of what the Grateful Dead's music was. Thanks for reading.     Time being short
    I came up with a rather new twist. Listening to an entire show sometimes just isn't possible, so what I've done is to select one disc from a set and create a mix up. Yesterday I started with some 73 and jumped to 90 then back to 72, etc. kinda works with the 50th concept. I have SO much Dead now, I might be able to only enjoy 1 complete show in a day and that would take a while to go thru all of it. So this approach is in play. I'm also rotating in terms of sets too. First sets and then Second.It gives me a broad palate to draw from and lots of years to combine into one big groove for the day. I've read were some folks wouldn't try this, but it's working in the summer heat so far! Enjoy yourselves!

    There's some good insight into some of the music that influenced Jerry and some of the directions he wanted to explore or did not in the following March '78 JGB interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya2Vv1zcGmY It gives some background on the edgier, harder feel the music took on at that time. There's an interesting piece about new wave and punk that starts about 29 min in. Very interesting stuff.. if you had the same conversation say in '72 or '73, Its very likely names like Django Reinhardt, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis and the like might just pop up. At one point Garcia states, "I like Cheap Trick." A musical Omnivore he was.. 35 min in he speaks highly of the Who and Townsend but says its a drag to do the same show '4 years in a row. Change and reinvention is a part of the golden thread this tapestry is woven from. Anyway, more food for thought. The only thing constant in this world is change.

    Unfortunately, when I think of Keith's later playing, I invariably think of the Cornell Fire. His blocky repetitive chords are just a sin, and almost ruin this amazing song for me. Give me his early stuff any day, the man was fantastic!

I never articulated this correctly, and I think you are right. Since we were talking about the "non-factor" issue (and I'd never actually noticed anything BAD before, like the 12/31/78 bad chord), I decided to check out a couple songs from the famous 5/8/77 gig. After all, we all know that show, right? I dialed up Estimated Prophet in the car, and listened for what Keith was doing. Now, granted, I'm cruising down the road in 93-degree Florida heat, so the AC is cranked to the max, but let me just say: during the first 3 minutes or so that I road-tested that song, I did not hear Keith...at all. I could hear everybody else: Phil, Jerry, Bobby, Mickey & Billy. I skipped ahead to Morning Dew, and I heard a little bit of tinkling piano during the first few minutes...nothing bad, but nothing remarkable. Sounded low in the mix, too...very low. Maybe they really did turn his volume down overall? No idea. For contrast, I listened to a Yes show from the same basic era, '78. Rick Wakeman on keyboards. Now, it's not a fair comparison, I know: different band, different style. But I'll tell you what: those keyboards were prominent, I mean PROMINENT, in the mix. All over the place. So maybe it wasn't just drugs, passivity, or whatnot. Maybe he really was mixed intentionally low by the latter years of the Godchauxs' tenure.

    I always liked this show, but Keith is a non-factor and he really blows it toward the end of Good Lovin'-- when the rest of the band stops at one point, Keith hits a big chord. That is one of the worst obvious errors I have heard in all my GD listening, way worse than any vocal flubs they regularly made. Re: Beware Mr. Baker and the Clapton comment, in the movie they talk about Ginger's style a lot and that he was really a jazz drummer thrust into a rock and roll band. Clapton's comment, I think he was more appalled by the comparison to Bonham, you can hear him say, "no, no, Zep..." and then he catches himself before being caught on camera bashing LZ. Ginger could swing, hit 'em hard and provide some world beats, too. I like Keith Moon a lot and find his drumming amazing in his prime. This documentary gave me a better appreciation of Ginger Baker's talents-- in spite of the fact that he is absolutely insane.

    Rdevil - Can you clarify what is meant by "Keith going through Jerry's briefcase may have been his biggest sin"??? Do you mean he was actually busted rifling through his stuff/stealing Jerry's stash, or was that just a euphemism for "he was doing the same, err…, recreational stuff as Jerry and it had a very negative effect"? I do recall a story from one book where someone had stolen Jerry's stash from his briefcase and he started VERY indiscreetly confronting people "Who took my bindle!" Maybe these stories are related (though probably not - made me think of it though…) I'm mildly uncomfortable that this is getting into unsavory gossip, but I'm hitting "send" anyway...

    What an interesting take that I never thought about before, it's Mickey's fault ;) It does stand the basic logic test of jazz based piano players were considered part of the rhythm section and the addition of a 2nd drummer would leave less space for Keith in the mix, where as syths, cheesey keyboards and organ would occupy a different spot in a 2 drummer line up. things to listen for in the future. Billy's new book has also given me lots to listen for and highly recommended for his point of view from the drummers seat on the mood/drug consumption of the periods. Jerry seems to be one of the few junkies that could still play well far longer than most of the people around him and even though it became a problem, they let it continue as the money became everyone's drug of choice at the end. meanwhile Weather Report suite from 9/12/73 SBD just shuffled on and Keith is sounding great, too bad theres a bunch of horns soloing where Jerry should be playing and it sounds like a flock of waterfowl having an orgy.

I have poked around a few random shows but only listened to 1966 straight through. It changed my entire perception of early Dead. Just a wicked performance. I like when Jerry introduces Viola Lee Blues (it's at the end of the track before it.) They all sound a little hesitant to play it.

It literally means "next to last". In street speak it takes on the meaning "second to none" or simply used to describe something utterly appeasing. It is easy to get away with using this word because of it's confusion with "ultimate" by those who don't know any better.

I completely agree with you about Englishtown. The sound definitely turned with that show.I also agree with DL... The sound turned again after their ten day break in spring 1978. I know that everyone has their favorites and liking spring '77 is really easy... Kinda like being a Yankee fan. I genuinely think that people sometimes discount spring '77 because it's always talked about as being great. I go away from it for long stretches and then come back to it in absolute awe. It's mind-boggling at how tight they were at that time. If only they managed to thow a few Dark Stars in there.... Wow!

Agree 100% on the timelines there, including the DL 1978 assessment - stark contrast between DaP 15 and the 30 Trips show, just a few weeks later. WTF happened?!? Is that when Bobby picked up the slide? And yeah, it is mind boggling how tight they are - and also how good the recordings are. Something picked up a notch over '76's recordings, and they definitely lost something by the early 80s. I was raving about the '77 30 Trips show this morning. I have to listen all the way through, wish I had more time.

Um, try again. Listen to Werewolves from 4-24. Or Bertha, 4-19 for that matter. I still think the Dead were 1978 for the whole year, and I listen to a hell of a lot of it. It's one of my favorite years. Bob's tone changes a little on the second leg of spring and continues through the St. Paul, Omaha and 1st Red Rocks shows, but the slide was present on the first leg too. Just ask claney. Slide hell, anyone?

In the liner notes to the 1980 show Dave refers to the show as penultimate, when it's really show #2 of a 4 Show tour.Either it's a Canadian thing, or it's the penpenultimate show of the tour. Sorry for the confusion, it was more of a note to TPTB ;)

After yesterday's WTF regarding lack of delivery confirmation and back-ordered status I was delighted to receive my order late yesterday afternoon. Scroll No: 5238 (no miracle) Interior: Red Velvet Backstage Pass: 6/16/93 Freedom Hall, Louisville, KY Ticket: 10/28/91 Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CA No of Discs: 79/80 MISSING DISC: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 9/10/91 Disc 2 I've sent an email requesting a replacement disc to both deadnet and drrhino. Has anyone had any luck replacing missing discs so far? I have to say that the quality of both the box and the book way exceeded my expectations after reading some of the negative comments posted here.

Very hit-or-miss for me. When it hits, though... Wow. DaP15 has quickly become one of my favorite releases in a long time.I might be in the minority, but The Egypt shows are a huge miss to my ears. Then they come back to the states for the "From Egypt with love" shows and knock it outta the park.

....make sure you have clean hands when you handle the sleeves. They pick up EVERY slight grease smudge. I'm not a fan of the Road Trips packaging, but at least the "sandpaper" material used didn't have that issue...left a nice thumbprint smudge on my Manor Downs....(sad face)....

The whole thing of learning slide guitar from scratch, on stage is a mistery to me. Bob's picking up the slide instead of playing chords is a huge difference in the overall sound of the band in 78. When he played slide behind either Jerry's vocals or guitar leads, it made for a much thinner sound, with much less color.

after delving deeper into the incredible box, one word comes to mind - 'exquisite!' i have discovered a crack in disc 1 of the '83 show, and customer help are onto it. david lemieux's individual show comments and the total design, artwork - all just exactly perfect!

there's a sparse clarity to the dead's sound in egypt that was truly a one off and incredibly special. it had all to do with the desert air, huge sky, looming sphinx and pyramids. the official dvd reveals the band's energy - to my eyes, jerry never danced so much! too bad billy only had the one good hand. that effected the sound, no doubt. didn't stop his camel steering skills though!

A gracious proposal and ensuing smile to end the week, but I'm holding out for a Deadspread that simply must include a gold diamond ring; the harp unstrung; a bottle of red whiskey; scarlet begonias; an eight-sided whispering hallelujah hat rack; a shower of pearls; cloudy dreams unreal; a far-gone lullaby; love songs written in the letters of MY name; an unextinguishable love light and 2 souls in communion......though, after spelling it all out, I realize some degree of compromise may be required lest I embrace spinsterhood!/peace & gratitude, K

The sound is not optimal and even though it was mutitrack there were still problems. The Hamza parts are nice and Shakedown>Trucking from the 16th is amazing. The best recording of Egypt I have heard is an aud tape of the 16th made by one of the pranksters and has running commentary from Kesey and the bunch including a chorus of "backshish" during the drums and the search for a lost girl, Amy I think, who wandered off by the Sphinx. Man were those people fukked up :) What a nice audio landscape from the perspective of being in the crowd with the Pranksters, not just focused on what's happening on stage. I'm not sure if that tape ever made LMA, I don't think my copy made it through the 1980's.

I've listened to very little post Brent dead in my life. Never cared for Vince and Jerry too inconsistent. However, I listened to first disc of 94 and it rocked .... Especially help/slip/franklins. I thought I went to this show but now think I probably went the nite before and the nite after

Super impressed. 1966 - Good early stuff. I enjoy the early shows like this, and it has a lot of songs I'd never heard before. Very enjoyable, even if I wouldn't revisit it much. 1967 - Stellar. This is just top notch. 1968 - More good stuff. A short show. But I enjoyed this a lot. 1969 - Wow. This is as good as anything in the FW69 set. I love this and will re-visit often. 1970 - just started listening. Doing each show 2-3 times before moving to the next year. Love it.

I've listened to '66-'74 and '76. All sound great as do the performances. I haven't listened to '75 due to missing Disc 2 which Dr. Rhino assured me would arrive in 1-2 weeks. I listened to '90 last night and '91 tonight. The sound is good and I'm surprised how inspired the performances are. Bob's slide playing more than likely started during the making of 'Shakedown Street' since it was produced by Lowell George, a slide player second only to Duane Allman. The album was released in 1978 so draw your own conclusions. Does anyone know of him playing slide prior to 'Shakedown'? I've never had a problem with my PO Box as I've had all DaP's as well as both 'Spring 90s' delivered there.

Went to all the '94 Eugene shows, and strangely enough don't even remember them playing there in '93 until I saw this. Saw someone has 5-15-93 Vegas, not only went to that but it was my birthday, so I would trade for that. Was also in 4th row in front of Vince on his b-day on 2-21-95 and would trade for that. Boxzilla 3311 has arrived, actually yesterday but didn't have time to post. I patiently waited all day for it to arrive at work, and it arrived safely a hour before I left. 3311, no miracle ( tho I think this box of grate music is a MIRACLE! ) Good shape Blue Checking disks, so far ok Show: Oct 30, 1991, cool, I went to this show! (Can you believe ticket price was $22.50?) Pass: June 16, 1990 Lots of tickets from the October 1991 run, which as you all know, was right after Bill died in a fiery helicopter crash. Wonder why so many from that run? I only streamed two songs while traveling in France this September. I had to do some laundry in my hotel sink, and thought why not listen? I checked out the 1973 show. Since then I have been busy wrapping up my listening to the E72 box for the first time. Love all the conversations and box reviews in this forum! This box is awesome! I just finished listening to 1975, and I was there! What fun. Thanks to all who created this for the wide variety of shows through the years.

Greetings, I have been eagerly awaiting this box set for some time, with near panic ensuing last weekend as I started reading about deliveries last Friday. I was desperate for the box to arrive in time for the weekend, but mine arrived this past Monday instead. All good things in all good time. I have no disappointments. Everything is way cool. I would have been totally bummed had I not made the purchase, even though it was steep. I missed on on FW69, and vowed not to let that happen again. For those of you who did not get the box for whatever reason, well, I understand, but, so glad I did. Its smaller than I thought physically. The art work is cool, and the book is very cool too. The scroll is a big matrix with the years as columns, and songs they played as rows in chronological order of when they played the song, and for how long (by year). Its hard to read, but a nice little historical reference. Seems like some want reviews of shows, and I will post periodically as I progress through the set. I'm starting in chronological order. I've listened to the first 3 shows a few times. I admit, I haven't listened to a lot of 1966, but here's my first impressions: 1966 show (july 3) - So interesting to hear this. Great recording and varied set list. Primordial Dead. Classic 60's sound, in an Austin Powers way. You can tell they are good, but not overly mind blowing about what's to come. Jerry's guitar has no distortion, and lots of reverb but his playing is good and you know its about to burst. Interesting to listen to Billy. The drumming is very good and solid. Phil just started playing bass, and its definitely more of classic bass than his counterpoint playing style that would develop. Bobby not heavy in this mix. They are all still learning here. The thing that's amazing is when you listen to the next show from 1967. 1967 show (Nov. 10) - whoa! This is an amazing show. They have launched. The Viola Lee Blues from the 1966 show in comparison is a good place to understand how far they've come and where they are going. They are stretching out now. The sound quality is stellar here. Maybe the best 1967 show I've heard. Jerry has definitely found the edgy distortion now and plays throughout inspired and sustained. Where does he get the energy and stamina? Incredible stuff! This whole show has energy from start to finish. The drumming is evolving by now too. And it sounds really good. I love listening to the drums from this period. Mickey is blending in well. The drum tones and rhythmic patterns were among the best in their career in this early phase. Bobby is starting to show up more in the mix compared to the first show. A wild Alligator made me smile. I love this stuff. A top show in any collection. 1968 show - This short show is interesting to hear, but not the best 68 show I've heard. It had sound problems throughout which showed up in the mix. About half the inputs were not recorded properly in the first few songs, and there is a loud ground buzz that appears somewhere in the middle. Still, the energy is really good. I need to listen to again, but the 67 show was so good, almost anything after that would be a bit of a let down. Regardless, they are in a prime point in their career, and they are about to launch into what I consider my favorite year, 1969. More to come, if you want. Ciao, Tim

Who do we address issues with the discs we get received. I'm ripping my discs and find that for the '78 Providence show, and found that I have two disc 1's, one disc 2, and no disc 3. Do I contact Dr. Rhino? MaryE? Thanks

Yeah the GD began recording 'Shakedown Street' in July '78. That's why I was asking if anyone knows of Bob playing slide prior to July '78. I don't remember him playing it when I saw them in '77 or '78 for the matter but it's almost 40 years ago and that's many beers, bottles, blotters and bongs ago! How's that for an alliteration? Thanks to Alain, JimInMD, antonjo & Born Cross Eyed for giving me your opinions on the Europe 72 Book. Sounds like everyone thinks it's a good one. Now I just have to find one. I missed out on the Trunk and have the music only edition. Glad to hear the Boxes are showing up around the World. Feeling for those who have not received theirs yet. Your patience is being tested "Grately", but hopefully it is just around the corner. So far, I've not been contacted by anyone from Dead.net or Rhino, with a resolution for the "name panel" error on my 30 Trips Box (it has 2 "T.C. Keith" panels and no "Jerry Bob Pig" panel). Have others with damage/defective Boxes received any definitive resolution to their Box issues? If so, from whom did the resolution come?

Apparently I wasn't sharp enough to realize that one of the moons on the box lid was a new moon. Thanks for setting me straight, Jeffsmith. Kind of cool how the names of the earliest band members start in "Spring." It would have been nice if Keith and Donna's names were together on the same side of the box but Keith and TC are the only names on the "Fall" side and they each joined the band in the Fall. Coincidence, or was that planned? Also, I'm a little surprised Bruce's name is not on the box. He was a member for about as long as TC. It's not a big deal but I'm curious about how that decision was made. Listened to the '84 show the last two nights and it sounds great. I'm really enjoying skipping around and taking my time with the shows.

The eight-sided whispering hallelujah hat rack is the true grail here. I do hope you'd be willing to share it, though, should my quest prove successful ~ two of the eight sides is my only supplication (that's how many hats I actually wear of the myriad ones perpetually tumbling over each other atop my coat rack).

I finally finished burning all of the disks except for the 2 I received that had big cracks in them. As I figured they were unreadable and just made that tell-tale clicking/grinding noise. Disk 1 of the 75’ show and disk 2 of the 94’ show. The cracks were almost identical in length going from the inside outward. I wanted to burn them all to make sure none of the others had any issues before I contacted customer service. Just got off the phone with cs and I have officially been put on the Dr. Rhino shit be messed up list. I was told that I would be contacted via email within a couple of weeks. Amy said they were compiling a list of all the issues being reported. I haven’t seen anyone report here that they had any issues with their cases. I guess there was one person who said they had a spine splice. I don’t have that but about 9 of my cases had some smudging/spotting/smearing. Some just had a few minor spots but 2 or 3 had quite a few spots front and back. Is anyone else seeing this? I didn’t report it to customer service but when the good dr. reaches out I may ask for some replacements. Normally I wouldn’t bother but since they will be sending me 2 disks anyway it won’t hurt them any to toss in some empty cases.
