"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

Very interesting that Cinram Group manufactured these. I should have figured as there are not many CD pressing firms out there. That means these disks were pressed 10 minutes from my house. I had forgotten about Cinram, have had friends work there for years. I totally forgot about getting In the Dark and Dicks Picks 1 for free from some buddies. Man, I have to go through some of my old boxes. I was just about to buy DP1, and still may, off of ebay. I need some of you extremely organized folks to come spend a weekend with me. Free Head Food!

Your crass sales promotion is exceeded only by your annoying habit of posting this thing every 5 minutes. The box arrives. Only problem is I'm 2 hours away and it's raining back home. Had to call the neighbor. Luckily the box only got a little damp on the bottom when the UPS guy slid it onto the porch. Now the long wait. I love the camp in the Adirondacks, and I love the fall foliage, but I also really, really love the Dead. Maybe I can leave just a couple hours earlier then planned. Going to be hard to wait.

Actually, these pictures - ESPECIALLY the side views - are great, because now I can notice how cheaply the box was made. Look closely and you'll see a thin layer of wood veneer over a heavyweight cardboard. Your pictures really bring out the colors much more better in the artwork. I am positively impressed with your photography. Rating: A, not an A+ or an A-

Wow on '67. I had cassettes of 11/10 and 11/11 from the early '70s, but having this so clean and remastered just amazes me. On to '68.....

I have been trying very hard to stick to my chronological order of listening to these shows. (I did play '80 as a pallet cleanser after '66-'69.. I'm not perfect!) It's taken all I have to not skip to the '77 show, being my favorite year... and knowing that's also my favorite part of my favorite year. So your posts about it aren't helping. But I am glad to hear that I will really be in for a treat. Box photos: They seem to indicate your box got to Forrest Park completely unscathed. I don't even see any of the tiny flaws like mine has.

It just occurred to me that I need to be focussing on where to put this box before I pick up my 3 year old son for the weekend today. Few delicate things are safe from a toddler, and the paint job on this monster just beckons to a kid.. looking like a toy box and all.

A massacre ! The second concert of 30 Trips Around The Sun is a real killing. From the first title, Viola Lee Blues, I was on the knees. A force, a cohesion, a jam to break everything. A The Other One, nervous and full of energy. A really enjoyable Alligator. An inventive and unbridled Caution (part of which has also been taken on Anthem of the Sun). And all the rest… This concert of November 10, 1967 is amazing maturity. We frankly have trouble recognizing the 1966 group, the Dead evolved supersonic manner. Garcia is much more present than in 1966. If I had one day explain to someone what is an acid trip, I just tell him to listen Anthem of the Sun and this show.

I just bought an empty 30 Trips box,, now I need 30 GD releases that will fit in there. All the Road Trips, To Terrapin, 4.18.70 and 11.18.72 will fit nicely. Hopefully the 2 stash spots can come in use.. And I already know what 45 I am putting in the empty spot.. My newly acquired Sugar Magnolia/ Mr Charlie is going in there!! Sunshine Daydream !! Cover art on cd cases is ok. My vote would have been to do a Hundred Year Hall cover art theme. Always one of my favorites. Phil in the middle with his glasses Lol Bring on the Fillmore West 1970 Box - April 9 ! April 10 !! April 11 !!! April 12 !!!! And add *4.3.70 - Cincinnati as the bonus disc !!!!!

Can someone give me the email or phone for Dr. Rhino? Disc one from the 94 show showed up with a nice crack in it, and Disc one from the 66 show scratched all up, looks like someone played some hockey with it. Contacted customer service but have not heard back from them yet, was suppose to get an email. Check those discs people, unfortunately not all the sets are Just Exactly Perfect

Another hour or so.. and I start my weekend which includes digging into this box. I hear you G. Farseer.. I would be jonsin' to get my grubby paws on the box too, if mine were stuck in postal limbo. May all (or lots) of the people that haven't gotten their boxes get them today. Perhaps they need to bring in Santa to deliver all remaining by dawn tomorrow.

Just been listening to a friend's copy of 30 Trips, and noticed that songs have been moved around (presumably to fit on discs), and it made me wonder if the USB will have the sets in their correct order ?The question may've been asked already, but a can't be arsed to look through all the posts.

I'd bet we see another 30 trips sooner rather than later. Does the vault contain another show from all 30 years? I'd guess we've got stuff they could at least audience patch like they did with this one to get us another 30 shows. Hell, they made a few million off shows that wouldn't have been otherwise releasable in other formats. I don't see them waiting another 10 years or more for another box like this. Instead they can be clearing some stuff from the vaults while hanging onto the better stuff they have other plans for and bring in millions. That being said, what is disc rot? I haven't checked my whole box yet, doing that this weekend. I have bought thousands of CDs and stored thousands of burned CDs over the years and have never came across one that was bad or went bad over the years. What is this disc rot all about and what causes it?

I have already found myself coming back to 2 shows ...many times: 1972.09.24 Palace Theater - Waterbury, CT 1979.10.27 Cape Cod Coliseum - South Yarmouth, MA For me it is not so much the set list or current members - they just sound great at these particular shows. I haven't really touched the 80's or 90's yet either so this list may grow.

Best to just Google it, OE 800. You'll find lots of pictures. Some of my old CDs from back in the late 80s show some signs of disc rot. My old Europe 72 double disc has it in a few places and won't play. I have an old Bob Dylan bootleg, and if I look at it in the right light, It's hard to explain, but It looks like something was spilled inside the CD. Not sure if that's the beginning signs of disc rot too, but it won't play either. edit: I've noticed some of that "something spilled inside" effect in some newer CDs (at least 1 in 30 Trips), and they played..although they sometimes get a suspicious activity mark from EAC. It's really bad on the Dylan boot I have and that CD use to play just fine.

I am pretty sure by now.. everyone has gotten their box except one man. No, seriously.. I feel your pain.. I do love a good conspiracy, but often there is a less fun, but rational answer. ..there is something wrong with getting this out all at once. It could be staffing, clearing out half a warehouse within a few days creates its own logistical problems. It also could be simpler. Perhaps there were production problems and the supplier could commit to half the inventory by x date and the rest by y date. But who knows.. what I do know is something doesn't make sense. Could also be the boxcutter bandit struck again and they caught it before mailing and rejected those. But something is weird and I do feel bad about those who don't have their box and me having mine. So without offending people from GA, FL and clearly WY, something is not exactly perfect and getting fixed. Only speculating.. but the reply jrf gave from Cust Serv tells me there is something we just don't know. Either that or there are 10 employees at the warehouse and they have reached their 40 hour limit and no boxes for anyone in GA, FL and WY. Or perhaps Vladimir Putin did in fact cut a couple thousand boxes with a soviet made boxcutter. We will never know for sure. What else could it be?.. but one man and jrf.. I think its worth the wait. _________ One edit: my bro, Luis! Great to see you.

@ Alain - the 11/10/67 show and 'Anthem' would be a good place for anybody to start as far as understanding the GD and what they were about. @ Keithfan & Lowspark75 - that '77 show is as near perfect as we're ever going to hear as far as live GD. Everyone, including Keith can be distinctly heard in the mix. All around fantastic mastering job with the '77 show.

Maybe one of my cd's caught disc rot from a DAT. Probably should have stuck with 8-tracks. Is there a cure though- where's Jonas Salk when we need him.

Just got the following email from TXR: 10/24 & 10/25 Phil & Friends Show Cancellation A Message from Phil: Dear Friends, I am sorry to let you know that I will need to cancel the October 24th and 25th Phil & Friends shows with Chris Robinson. I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in early October, and have spent the last few weeks at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale doing tests and eventually surgery to remove the tumors. I am very fortunate to have the pathology reports show that the tumors are all non aggressive, and that there is no indication that they have spread. So thanks to my local doctor Cliff Sewell, and the incredible team at the Mayo Clinic, all is well and I can return to normal activities in two weeks from my surgery. Unfortunately, that means I will have to cancel the PLF shows scheduled for Oct 24/25. We will reschedule these shows as soon as we can, but in the meantime, keep a lookout for a free Grate Room show before I leave for the East Coast shows. I also plan to pop in and jam in the bar before we leave, so I hope to see you there at Terrapin. Love Will See You Through.... -Phil PS Ticket refund info will be posted soon

I realized that yes, the bottom of Boxzilla, while a really cool tree ring with an even cooler 'bolt, is also made out of a tough cardboard. To save from wear and tear, I put one of those little felt covered sticky circles on the bottom of the box near each corner. It sits atop stickies, thus saving its bottom. Just thought I'd share in the interests of others' bottoms. Sixtus EDIT: be well Phil

As requested, I asked whether the tix and backstage passes here are originals or reproductions. They are originals. Thank you.

The type of disk rot my 2nd CD of 4/25/77 has looks like when a wet print gets smudged. The back of the CD is fine, but when you look at the silver side there's like a translucent "thumb print" on the inside of the outer edge of the clear plastic CD and won't play the last track. It's a 1/2 inch "wave shape from the outer edge of milky unplayable CD.

no, not our friend dr. rhino. you see, i think i might have a problem. having grooved on the excellent '66 item from the magic box i've developed a taste for much more. naturally, the extraordinary, crisp and brilliant 2/25/66 ivar theater had to be next, but i'm by no means sated. i can see a week or two at least of inhabiting '66. if this is gonna be true of every year 'til '79, i'm gonna have serious issues. i have way more content to explore in those later years, and with 2000+ at least hours, what's a man to do? will i ever get to savour the brent years, let alone reach vince?

I know this is unrelated especially in light of the news with Phil, but can anybody tell me if the 30 Days Of Dead for 2013 & 2014 is still available? I have 2010, 2011, and 2012 but missed out on 2013 and 2014 (I had medical issues going on). Any info is appreciated.

Prayers and thoughts out to Phil and his family! Please get well soon!! Finished 94 and 95. I really enjoyed the 94 show. Great set list, and the opening Help-Slip-Frank hits the spot, followed by Althea, cowboy tunes, Dylan, So Many Roads, etc. However, whereas the '93 show showed that Jerry could still be firing on all cylinders all night (love that show), in this '94 show it seems to me that although he is giving it all he's got, he just can't physically do everything he wants to do. I think it's one reason he pours so much into the ballads where he can reach emotional heights without as much reliance on consistently inspired guitar playing. The rest of the band makes the extra effort to provide some of the intensity that used start with Jerry. Love having this show though, and the sound is wonderful. In the '95 show, the issues with Jerry's level of playing continue what was seen in the '94 show. That said, I still very much enjoyed the show, and frankly, the second set is really really good (we can live with one Samba in the box, can't we?). The Drums-Space sequence is one of my favorites in the box, and the post drums section (just Johanna, Sugar Mag, and the encore) is very well played. In Sugar Magnolia, you can hear that Jerry is still more than capable of coming up with creative licks, and I enjoyed this version a lot. Overall, the '94 and '95 shows were better than expected they would be, and the '93 show was WAY better than I thought it would be (a truly great show.)

Thanks for getting the clarification, marye. And since I'm the one who cast doubt in the first place, lemme just say: awesome! Thanks, TPTB!

Makes sense the tix are originals or they would have reprinted shows from the box.

So, needless concerns aside, I want to let TPTB know: they really got it right with this box. The thing that I'm happiest about is that it gives equal weight to every phase of the band's career. I'm a Deadhead who likes all periods just about equally. I love garage band Dead just as much as primal, the Vince years just as much as the Keith years (or, at least, almost). I've even been known to defend '95 at times (the SLC stand is a prime example of why). I've long since resigned myself to this view not being shared by most, and so it hasn't surprised me that most releases have concentrated on the '70s. I can't even really criticize the exclusively-prime-years turn the Dave's Picks series took last year. That's what most fans want. But that's precisely what makes it nice that 30 Trips gives '66, '82, and '95 just as much love as '69, '72, and '77. You have to go back to So Many Roads to find another Dead release that did that. And So Many Roads completely changed the way I looked at the band. Anyway, count me happy that this box does what it does.

I was able to download 30 Days Of Dead for 2014 but the link for 2013 gives you the 2014 songs again. I left a message on the site to that affect. Hopefuly they'll correct it so I can download the 2013 songs as well. Thanks again.
