Grateful Dead

During Victim they were showing video of a big car, a black cadillac or something, rolling through city streets. It seemed like they were looking for shakedown to me, could have just been my perspective. I'm not sure during which song, but at some point all these heads spread out around the place and lit candles for Jerry's birthday, you could see them all over the coliseum.

This was the only show I ever saw on Jerry's bday and what a bday show it was.The tuning at the beginning of the show was fun. Jerry did a adam's family tease and the mickey mouse theme song iirc. The scarlet fire took up almost a half hour in itself. There was a huge roll of butcher paper someone brought in and everyone was writing their name on it. At the start of the 2nd set we all sang Happy B-day to Jerry as he walked on and lifted up the long ass banner. Short 1st set but hey the man is playing on his Bday...

i remember the big birthday card- i signed it. I also remember someone drumming on the building (walls, posts etc.) either during intermission or after the show, it was this crazy, manic drum solo using every available surface to make sound. So many beautiful talented people.

wow STELLA BLUE, OH AND HOW THEY LIGHT UP THE FIRST PART OF THE FLOOR W/ RED AND YELLOW FLAME LIGHTING FOR THE SCARLET > FIRE. AND THE WATER I DRANK WAS AWESOME. LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL . A SHAME TRAFFIC DIDN`T MAKE IT TO THE PALACE.. AND ,GOOD TIMES ,THANKS FOR THE MEMORY OF THE CARD . SOME THINGS YOU NEVER WANT TO FORGET.

We were pretty excited to see a show on Jerry's birthday. I really don't remember the show much at all except for the Satisfaction encore, which I didn't think I'd see again after Phil's birthday in '90. What I do remember is that a girl I liked gave me a "hit" off of her lollipop, a cherry blow pop, I think. Naturally, I thought I was "in" at that point, but it turned out I wasn't. Go figure. Almost the exact opposite happened to me on my grade school playground once...a girl who liked me took my lollipop, gave it a lick or two, and then gave it back to me, but I threw it in the grass because I didn't like girls quite yet.

For whatever reason, Garcia plays post drums with extreme intensity. A true rarity at this juncture.He really lays into Watchtower...the Stella Blue is as emotional as it ever got and his work on Satisfaction always reminded me a bit of Eddie Van Halen ;-)...well maybe not.. Liberty was strong and jovial. Garcia rocked the house this night. “The Omnipotent Grateful Dead!”

Ooops, I mean I didn't think I'd see "Satisfaction" again after 3-9-92 in Landover, not Phil's birthday in '90! That was "Revolution." It was really late when I wrote that.

Great show, we were on Jerry's side of the stage so we got to watch him all night. I remember it was a hot sticky day and as we left the show it was a gentle refreshing rainshower outside, walked back to the car barefoot doing my own Samba in the rain!

Still remember that Stella Blue. I was eaten alive by mosquitos the night b4. Locals call them the state bird of Michigan. What a time...

Jerry's birthday card was a huge roll of paper laid down an entire aisle in the parking lot. About 7 ft X 100 ft., at least. People were signing it and reading it all day long. Jerry had it on stage. I'm sure he loved it. Insane second set, time is still stopped for me somewhere in that Victim/Scarlet/Fire rock and roll haze... Stella Blue brought me back, a little.

When the band took the stage for the second set, when the crowd was singing Happy b-day - there were people in the openings all around the arena - where the hallways lead in, in the ledge between upper and lower levels - with sparklers - kinda turned the whole Palace into a cake for a few moments.

Of course this show is mostly notable as it was Jerry's birthday and I'll always treasure it for that reason. Like the previous night this show had it's good points and bad points. Over all it was better than the previous night, probably because it was Jerry's birthday. The band was in a playful mood and the 2nd set Fire>Scarlet and Stella were hot. This was the only time that I attended both nights of their two nights in town and I'm glad I did considering that it was close to the end.

This venue was my first trip to the Palace. The traffic getting into the show was horrible and it was so hot and sticky. I also experienced the being attacked by the state bird. The Stella Blue brought was very sobering and made the hairs on my body stand up, Jerry always had a way of doing that; his B-Day was no exception. The Scarlet/Fire had the house rockin and made the second set. Thanks for the memories!!!!

this was my last jerry show...and what a show it was!!! c'mon jerry's birthday!!! candles, singing happy birthday, HOT scarlet/fire, and that stella blue changed my life...but, then again, didn't every show change all our lives in some little way?

Just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention. The Stella Blue from this night was very good- in case no one had mentioned this...just kidding it is the best (there is one from March I heard a SBD of- Richfield maybe that is the #1 Contender) The Stagger Lee is also great and somewhat extended. Best show I ever saw. If I have to stick up for 7/23/1994 Soldier Field I can be sure that this fine effort has legions of fans.

The trip was too strong. We had 3rd row tickets right in front of Phil. Had to hand them off after the 1st set. It was way too intense of an experience to fully put into words. Let's just say I was pretty convinced Phil was mimicking me and my cement feeling shoes.
