vince's 1st two shows=fantastic
Vince's first show-and a great one. Not as good as the next night, but it still got thunderous applause from the assembled throngs. A triumphant return for the boys after Brent's untimely demise...Bobby, Jerry, and Phil sounded particularly good at both of these Richfield shows. What an incredible "Playin' " jam-has to be heard to be believed. For some reason, this tour was probably Vince's best. He was down in the mix, but his sound effects/playing seemed more "at place" than in future tours, in my humble opinion.
Addendum
Actually, now that I just listened to 6-22-92, I'll have to take back what I said about Vince's playing fitting better in '90, 'cause he plays REALLY well at that show, with some great sounds. Just goes to show that you really can't make any blanket statements about the Dead, which is part of what made them what they were.
yo Vinny
I remember this sticker going around that just said "Yo, Vinny" on it that I thought was hilarious. Other than that I can say this show was weird. It was wierd to not have Brent in the keyboard seat, and it was wierd to not really hear keyboards all that much as it seemed that had Vince turned down these first couple of shows until they could get Bruce in there to open it up a bit. The guy could sing and it was clear the band was working at it. Just a strange set of emotions on this first night for me and I'm sure lots of other heads. I knew I was sad that Brent was gone, but Brent was clearly missed and that reality caught me more off guard then I was prepared for.
Ripple?
Was this the show that people were handing out flyers with the lyrics to "Ripple" on it? We were supposed to sing Ripple to the band when Jerry took the stage after set break, but Bobby came out first and threw us stoners for a loop. I remember people trying to sing it, but it never really materialized. I'm pretty sure it was this show. BTW they played a 10 song first set, kind of rare for this era. I remember missing Brent for sure, but I was glad that the GD were still pushing forward, I wasn't ready to let go at this point. Anyone remember people talking about Steve Winwood as a propect for keys? Gotta love that GD rumor mill.
an emotional night
it was certainly strange having brent gone....first show without him. i think everyone was doing their best to welcome vince to the band, but still felt a real void nonetheless. the keys just weren't up to the same standard we were used to. i remember getting kinda choked up during crazy fingers when jerry sang "something new is waiting..."btw in response to the previous post: yes, it was on this night when those "ripple" flyers got handed out, but you're right that the planned sing-a-long never really got off the ground.
as was also previously mentioned, the 10-song first set was a nice treat, but for me anyway shows got a lot better once Bruce joined the band. of course Brent could never be replaced, but it was always a lot of fun to watch and hear the interplay between Jerry and Bruce at future shows....yeah, i agree with sentiments expressed earlier that this show was weird.
OHHH YEAAA!!
brokenhearted from brendt and ray vaughn(at alpine valley), this was a rough year for us all, but this show was a redeemer in my eyes that 900 tons was still a fun ride. bird song and peter made me cry... thanx jerry and company...
oz
Which was more important?
My son was born at 7:05am in the morning of this show, I had to give up the seats.
My first
I remember that this was my first show and I knew nothing about the Dead other than "Truckin'" - I was going with a girl that I was absolutely in love with and she paid more attention to the people around us than me. First time I had shrooms from the parking lot and it blew me away. I love this show listening to it now. The girl? Still in touch but many, many miles from me. Bummer.
The best laid plans...
I called in as Catie's dad, she called in as my mom, and Brian had to call in as his own pops. When we got back to school the next week, we learned it hadn't worked at all - but hey - we got to catch Vince's first shows.
Pretty cold camping nights in September, and gray days as I recall - though the pool at the campground was still full. Ran out of gas on the way home - hiked to the gas station with a can, and hitched a ride back to the car with a trucker.
Singing Ripple
Yeah, I think I remember that-I seem to recall tripping balls, searching for the sound of Ripple starting, being very confused-and then looking around at people around me doing the same thing, realizing we were doing the same thing, and laughing hysterically. It was a weird, emotional night; I think this episode, for me anyway, helped get rid of the tension.
Vince
We all flew up from Florida for the 1st show since Brent's passing to see what the future held for the Band. It was the end of one era, and the beginning of another. Something that has happened so many times before.
Just another evolution of The Grateful Dead.
I wasn't terribly impressed with Vince and this 1st show had a strange vibe of course.
I'm sure the same was said of Brent after Keith left.
By the second night we payed much less attention to Brent's absence and much more to the music at hand.
