Dr. Really posted this on Facebook, and it would seem to have wider applications (for instance, with the folks who were complaining about the fish-in-a-barrel law enforcement going into the festivals): The Road to Burning Man: Know Your Rights.

The Jerry Memorial At Burning Man
Hiya Everyone. I have been creating a statue with Stanley Mouse to add to the Jerry Memorial Sculpture that has been in Fairfax California for over 13 years. The statue will be real cool. Cast in bronze with a life size guitar with Chrome Plated wings that light up like rainbows or fire. I will have a full size model of the statue that lights up, set up at a camp to be decided at Burning Man. I hope The Dead come by the statue at Burning Man and jam for a while. Go to www.JerryMemorial.com to see a animated simulation, rendering, artist conception of the statue. I just added the interactive Jerry Garden where you can mouse over flowers to see photos of flowers that are actually growing at the Current Jerry Memorial. Flowers like Scarlet Begonias, China Cat Sunflowers, Sugar Magnolias, Purple Sage, American Beauties. We are having an event / gathering / jam at the Current Jerry Memorial site on Sat June 13th, 2009 during The Fairfax Festival Again www.JerryMemorial.com TELL A FRIEND PLEASE!!!! Peace, Jim Fox

Thinking of going for the first time this year. A group of my friends have already got their tickets. Any suggestions?

Well that is certainly debatable Mary. But I was at the first Burning Man on Baker Beach and subsequent others that have followed for the past twenty some years. Casey, my advice to anyone who is planning on going to Burning Man for the first time is to go to http://www.burningman.com and read the First Timer's Guide at the top of the page. Burning Man is not for the faint of art. If you go unprepared, you will regret it. If you prepare properly and leave your expectations in the default world, you will have the time of your life. Let me know what other comments or questions you have.

It is also helpful to go to many of the Burning Man related events that are held throughout the United States and announced weekly on various lists. If you bought a ticket you through Burning Man you should be on the Burning Man announce-list that disseminates community events. It is also highly advisable to pick one or more of the efforts that helps create the Burning Man event and volunteer. It is a great way to get involved, get to know people and help the event succeed.

Heed his wise words. I've never been to Burning Man because I know up front I haven't got the stamina or the resilience for it, but one of my old dogpark buddies was once talked into going by her boyfriend and pretty much returned early and in tears because she couldn't stand the dust, the heat, the chaos and the craziness. She wasn't mentally prepared, she wasn't physically prepared, and she had a really bad experience. I know other people who are regular Burners and have their own various gigs there that are huge successes. And they are, to put it mildly, prepared. Know what you're getting into, talk to the experienced folks, have a plan, and be completely prepared for it to fall apart!

Oh my gosh! That's quite the picture. I probably won't have the resources ($$) or time off to make it this year. But I'm definitely gonna plan it well in advance one year. Hopefully, I can get in with a crew who has some experience on their hands. @~~~~~~~>~~~~~~>~~~~~~~~~>~~ When you want that groove that invokes dreams, close your eyes and focus on the dream not the groove

and not just about life on the playa. it is a little known fact that Dr Are We Really?, the senior anthropologist of the Mind Shaft Society, is, in fact, omniscient. thankfully, he uses his powers for good. give Dr Really? your mind and he'll give you the shaft! i've been going out to the playa since '98. finding burning man in '98 was, in fact, the single most cathartic experience to help me through the loss of jerry garcia and the grateful dead experience as we then knew it. the burn may not be for everyone, but, like black licorice, those who like it really really like it. i really like it. i'll be camping at BRAT Camp this year, which may mean Black Rock Acid Tasters, Black Rock Arts Tribe, Beings Realizing Astral Travel or perhaps might simply be a license to be BRATs on the playa... regardless, anyone coming out to the playa, feel welcome to seek out BRAT Camp and say hello. ____________________________________________________ groovin' the light fantastic at http://www.popeshady.com and http://people.tribe.net/shadygrove

Religion is the abdication of responsibility. I thought for sure I would see allot more heads looking to attend the burn. this will be my 1st burn. I have a ticket as far as Reno on the 29th and a thumb for the remainder. If I can find BRAT camp shady i will look you up.

Horizons: Perspectives on Psychedelics September 19 - 21 2008 at Judson Memorial Church http://horizonsnyc.org/ info@horizonsnyc.org (Full announcement below this letter.) Burners, Welcome back. I know you're all busy settling back into the default world, but please take a moment to mark off September 19-21 on your calendars. The Horizons conference is returning. It is a weekend of learning about psychedelics with speakers from all over North America, starting with a kickoff party and reception on the night of Friday September 19, and two days of presentation on Saturday September 20 & Sunday September 21. See below for the full announcement. Tickets are on sale now. Last year was its debut. The Burning Man community has been deeply involved in this project since its inception, from planning to staffing to the speakers themselves. And of course, the multimedia exhibition of artwork in the gym downstairs featured numerous playa creations. Last year at Burning Man, before Horizons 2007 had even happened, the buzz was spreading and speakers for 2008 were recruited. Most notably, I am pleased to announce that Sasha and Ann Shulgin, psychedelic elders, bold researchers and fellow burners, will be presenting. This is the fruit of a conversation I had with them at Burning Man last year. Along with them are a dozen of the brightest speakers from across North America, addressing a wide range issues ranging including medical research, spiritual insight, creativity and imagination, society and culture and everything in between. If you are interested in volunteering, are a member of the press or have other questions, please reply to this message and let me know. Also, please email, post and spread word of Horizons near and far. If ticket sales are strong this year, Horizons 2009 may be able to feature speakers from overseas. Love and thanks for all of your support, Kevin Balktick & the Horizons team ------ == HORIZONS: PERSPECTIVES ON PSYCHEDELICS == September 19 - 21 2008 at Judson Memorial Church 55 Washington Square South New York, NY 10012 http://horizonsnyc.org/ info@horizonsnyc.org Horizons is a forum for learning about psychedelics. It seeks to open a fresh dialogue about psychedelics and challenges society to rethink their role in history, culture, medicine, spirituality and art. After a successful debut in 2007, it is now an annual event. Its dates for 2008 are September 19-21. Speakers have been announced and tickets are on sale! Psychedelics are a unique class of psychoactive drugs that have been used by humans for thousands of years. Millions of people in every corner of the globe have used them to alter their consciousness in search of introspective contemplation, spiritual insights, creative exploration and physical and psychological healing. In the 1950s and early 1960s, legal research with psychedelics spurred important discoveries in science and psychology. During the 1960s, psychedelics entered worldwide popular culture. Fueled by the wild social dogmas of the era, recreational use become commonplace. Questions about their safety, medical value, history and implications in politics and culture were unfortunately answered with numerous myths spread by both their users and the media. Times are changing. The freewheeling sixties are now a distant memory and the hype of the millennial rave fever has finally been laid to rest. Now, a small group of dedicated researchers and activists has orchestrated a renaissance in psychedelic research that is re-shaping the public's understanding of these unique substances. Horizons brings together the brightest minds and boldest voices of this movement to share their research, insights and dreams for the future. == SPEAKERS == (in alphabetical order, see website for schedule) * Allan Hunt Badiner - Co-editor of Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics * Rick Doblin, Ph.D. - Founder/president of MAPS * Robert Forte - Divinity scholar, editor of Entheogens and the Future of Religion * Alex Grey - Artist and co-founder of Chapel of Sacred Mirrors * Allyson Grey - Artist and co-founder of Chapel of Sacred Mirrors * Roland Griffiths, Ph.D. - Psilocybin researcher, Professor of Behavioral Biology and Neuroscience, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine * John Halpern, M.D. - MDMA, psilocybin and peyote researcher, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Laboratory for Integrative Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School * Sean Helfritsch & Isaiah Saxon - Video artists, creators of Bjork's Wanderlust 3D music video * Dan Merkur - Psychoanalyst, author of The Ecstatic Imagination * Dimitri Mobengo Mugianis - Ibogaine therapist * David Nichols, Ph.D. - Founder of Heffter Research Institute, Distinguished Chair in Pharmacology at Purdue University * Daniel Pinchbeck - Author of Breaking Open the Head and 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl * Sasha and Ann Shulgin - Psychedelics elders, authors of Tikhal and Pikhal == RECEPTION == Friday, September 19 8pm - midnight Free for Horizons ticket holders, $10 otherwise An evening of celebration, art, performance and friends featuring some of New York City's finest creative talent.
