    July 9 - July 15, 2007

This week we have almost 25 years of Grateful Dead music for you to hear, including plenty of material from this week in the history of the band’s recorded legacy, as well as a few other bits that just simply should be heard.

Our earliest track from our featured week is from 1976, from the second night of the band’s six-night stand at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, 7/13/76. From the middle of the first set is this long, focused Crazy Fingers, which opens up into some terrific spaces.

From 7/11/81, the band’s second visit to Alpine Valley in Wisconsin, we have this second set opening trio of Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance>Ship of Fools, all drawn from the cassette master. The entirety of this show does not exist, with the first chunk of set one missing, as well as the bulk of the post-Drums sequence, but there is a good hour that remains.

The very well-know show from 7/13/84 featured, of course, a rare and very special encore, and an interesting second set opener, but we’d like to play for you the rocking first set closing medley of Hell In A Bucket>Might As Well, a classic 1984 combination. This is drawn from the Beta PCM master.

We’ll next move forward with a trio of songs from the Summer Tour of 1989, widely considered to be one of the best of the last 10 years of the band’s performing career. From 7/9/89 at Giants Stadium is this opener of Shakedown Street-Jack Straw, both of which are packed with energy and inspired moments. A few nights later at RFK Stadium in Washington on 7/12/89, show-opening act Bruce Hornsby sat in with the band on accordion for this second set opener of Sugaree. And lastly from this tour is the post-Drums sequence from Deer Creek on 7/15/89, featuring Space>China Doll>All Along The Watchtower>Stella Blue>Sugar Magnolia. As anyone who followed that tour will remember, after seven shows in five of the biggest stadiums on the East Coast, arriving at Deer Creek for the band’s first performance there was like seeing the band in a tiny theatre. This entire tour was recorded to 24-track audio, so if a release is ever made from these shows, it’ll be mixed beautifully from these master reels.

We recently had a request for a nice, stand-alone version of Ship of Fools, so here’s one from 5/5/78 in New Hampshire. This is drawn from the reel-to-reel master running at 7.5 ips. Incidentally, to answer a recent question, “ips” stands for inches per second, the speed at which a tape runs. Standard speeds are 3.75, 7.5 and 15 ips. The faster the tape speed, the better the sound.

For a little taste of Denmark, this show-opening combination hits the spot: Greatest Story Ever Told-Sugaree from 4/16/72. Like all of Europe ’72, this show was recorded to 16-track tape, so a proper live album can be mixed if and when the time comes.

Also by request this week is a little bit more from 1967, a unique That’s It For The Other One suite from 10/22/67 featuring very different lyrics to Weir’s part of the song.

As promised a few weeks ago, we are pleased to bring you the second half of the magnificent 6/24/85 show featuring Space>Comes A Time>The Other One>Cryptical Envelopment>Wharf Rat>Around and Around>Good Lovin’. There was some exceptional music played in the summer of 1985, and this is just one of many examples.

Our penultimate track this week is another taste of Canada: the Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain from 11/2/77 in Toronto. Short, but very, very sweet.

Lastly, a little piece from 1991 featuring the two keyboardists, from 3/18/91 at the Capital Center in Landover: Me and My Uncle>Maggie’s Farm with each vocalist taking a verse of the latter song.

Be sure to check back next week when we’re not quite sure what we’ll be playing, but we are certain it’ll be good. As always, you are encouraged to write with questions or comments.

David, thank you so much for the 5/31/80 snippet. Sounds AWESOME! At some point please post the Space->UJB->PITB->China Doll->UJB->PITB->A&A->Good Lovin, Casey Jones from 7/10/81. As I recall they played CJ with the house lights on! Yet another show that has not seen the light of day as a SBD. Thanks again for all that you do.

Two versions of Ship of Fools, thanks David, i really needed it this morning. I highly recommend the DVD for Landover '91 Maggie's Farm, the footage of each vocalist taking a verse is unforgetable. "if you get confused..."

I just love the older shows. I really relish anything from 1967, since they're so rare. More early '70's too, please! I took your advice, and purchased "Ladie and Gentlemen... The Grateful Dead" (Fillmore East, April 1971.) It's excellent. Now I can retire my tapes! ;-)

TGIM, and TGFGD always.I've noticed that David is really bringing to light a lot of hot 80s moments. I'm glad because it seems like at all the other GD communities I go to, people are always dumping on or blindy ignoring 1980s Dead. Though I often wish Brent had used a regular piano sound all the time like Keith instead of his tinkly machine, there are times when it really works. By the way, there is one Dew that is the best. I'm serious...If you haven't heard it, you haven't lived. It's July '87, and I think its anniversary is next week... This Dew simply must be heard to be believed. It's one of the shows where Jerry sings "La Bamba". There is so much emotion in the singing, and this unbelieveable peak near the end. I'm hoping you'll post that one, Dave! -Charles Frederick

By the way, The Other 1 posted for this week is outstanding! Thanks for posting all of this wonderful music, I've been out-of-the-loop for a while and just discovered the Taper's Section a month or so ago. Keep up the awesome music-what you guys are doing is greatly appreciated at least by me!

I sure would love to have the second set from this show, particularly the pre-space portion. I have an AUD of this, but the Omni was pretty reverberent. This is one of my favorites, along with the Fox Atlanta 77 Dick's Pick. Chaos and organic order intermingled!

please please please listen to "knocking on heaven's door" from the september 6, 1991, show in ohio. please please please please please include it in the future taper's section. this was the only dead show i attended, and i found myself sobbing during this one. so did jerry, if i remember correctly. an emotional moment, and one that i will never forget. so far, i've burned 71 cd's using this taper's section. my wife thinks i'm nuts, but she has been enjoying them without realizing it. anyone else having this issue? keep them coming, david. you've made a happy man very old. wait a minute ...

That Scarlet > Fire is OK.I can't belive David chose one from Canada, He must be forgetting his New Jersey roots and the killer 9/2/78 from Giant's Stadium. Also, why only two shows from the holy, holy day of July 13th? There's more. Wasn't Highgate '94 on July 13th?

I really enjoy listening to this feature every week, but has anyone invented a filter to eliminate Donna's voice? I also think DL purposely sneaks in a horrid example of Donna ruining a song every once in while (listen to some of last week's selections for example). BTW, without trying to come across as too cynical, does David read these comments? David, give us a sign! Thanks again for your efforts.

How about the Estimated-Eyes from Red Rocks... I believe the date is 7-7-78.... used to have an audience tape of the show. Beautiful delivery of these two songs... Also did I mention that I want the Mason's Children from West Hollywood, Florida (5-22/23 1970) Also a nice version of "The Rub" Ain't it Crazy would be good too. Keep them coming brother!!!!

I would love to hear more stuff from 92-95. There were a lot of great moments inside of some mediocre shows, I think this format could allow for a better understanding of this underrated era. Lots of great "Standing on the Moon", "Terrapin", "Althea", to name a few. Just a suggestion from a fan who only saw the band live in 94 & 95. (First show: Highgate, VT 7/13/94). Keep up the good work- www.myspace.com/andrewtmitchell

The other day I thought I clicked on a link to check out all the other previous taper sections, now I can only find a link to get to the week before, did this link dissapear, is it still here somewhere, or is my memory just playing tricks on me?This new feature really does rock! How about the TERRAPIN from 3-18-77 Winterland the only one I recall to have the Alhambra section of the song and a really great show alltogether. Its on the live music archive, but the copy isn't that good, I had about four copies of this tape and none were ever that good on sound quality, but for those of you who have never heard that show you should definately give it a listen. The whole show is great, but the terrapin should be in all the history books! Thanks Dave for the killer tunes! Hand me my old guitar and pass the whiskey 'round. Matt
