    A LETTER FROM THE DEAD GratefulDead-SantaClara-480 More Info Santa Clara Chicago Dear Heads, Although none of us knew it when we walked off the stage at Soldier Field on July 9, 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange trip ended in Chicago that night. As you are aware, twenty years later, we’re returning to Chicago to properly say Fare Thee Well. But every good ending must start with a beginning. For us, it all began fifty years ago when we grabbed a bunch of instruments off the walls of a music store in Palo Alto California and began banging away on them in the back room, at night after the store had closed for the day. Since we made the decision to go back to Chicago to say our final goodbye, it has become clear to us that we first need to return to our beginnings, where we first said hello — to each other and to all of you. And so it is that we have decided to plug in for two additional shows on June 27 and 28 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California — just a dozen miles south of where Dana Morgan’s Music Store once stood. At Levi’s — as at Soldier Field — we will have the pleasure of being joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti. Ours wasn’t just a long, strange trip — it was a VERY long, VERY strange trip. We weren’t sure what it was going to be like to put a punctuation mark on the end of it. None of us anticipated the overwhelming outpouring of love and interest following our initial announcement of the shows at Soldier Field, and we were blown away by the response. We have tried to do the right thing wherever we could for the Chicago shows by honoring the roots of where we came from, while dealing with the realities of the current times. But that’s hardly comforting when you’re shit outta luck for tickets and your only option is inflated prices on secondary ticketing websites. That would piss us off too. From the moment these shows were first talked about, we have been thinking about what we could do to honor the roots of our Deadhead experience, even in the face of changing technologies. (Remember: Ticketmaster didn’t even go online until we got out of the game.) These shows were always intended as an expression of our gratitude, to both the music and the fans, so it’s important that we get things as right as we can. We have always been proud of our in-house mail order ticketing process, and the phenomenal way our fans have built a tradition out of turning a standard envelope into a frame-worthy piece of art. Some 60,000 mail order tickets were issued for the Soldier Field shows by the good folks at Grateful Dead Ticket Sales — yet we were still crushed to see how many of your beautifully designed envelopes did not get tickets. For shows of this magnitude, it’s impossible to eliminate every scalper. However, we offer you this: Working with our partners, we are using an online ticketing platform for the Levi’s shows that will help ensure that the tickets for these shows will get into the right hands, the hands of our true fans. We believe that this process is the best way to give each of you an equal opportunity to obtain tickets at the most affordable possible prices. We are are proud to announce that 65,000 tickets per night will be available via the "online mail order" for the Levi’s shows. For the nuts and bolts, go to Dead50.net. We will not be adding any more Fare Thee Well shows. The three Chicago shows will still be our final stand. We decided to add these two Santa Clara shows to enable more of our fans to celebrate with us one more time. But this is it. We love you guys more than words can tell, and hope to see you in the Bay Area or Chicago. If you can’t make it to the shows, we are working on ways for you to still experience our Fare Thee Well, from wherever you might be. Stay tuned for those details. Gratefully yours, Billy, Bobby, Mickey & Phil

To all of you, for all you do, this poem's for you: Merry Christmas and Best Wishes may your kitchen always have clean dishes; Glad Tidings, be well. Because of you, this year was beyond swell; Thanks for all your sharing your smiles your heart, it keeps us together when physically we're apart; The music is forever and never stops, which fits well, and rhymes with tops; For that's you and you and you! thank you for this year, it really rang true. Happy new Year for 2016; may it fill you with every good thing. I'll close with one simple thing: Let's smile, greet strangers and sing... dance and twirl and laugh and play... share when you can, and have a Grateful Day! your geopoetmeister...{poof}

2015 sure has been an amazingly grate year! So glad we made it! Good luck and best wishes in all that we do in 2016!!! In case anyone doesn’t have enough Grateful Dead to listen to and hasn’t already downloaded them, here are links to 30 DAYS OF DEAD and 31 DAYS OF DEAD. (30 Days of Dead has been a tradition on dead.net each November since 2010. The Unofficial 31 Days of Dead follows in December. Each day they both provide an unreleased, unpredictable pick from across the GD eras/years. I’m a full-show/set kind of guy, but you’ll find some real nuggets here.) (UNOFFICIAL) 31 DAYS OF DEAD This link is to this year’s 31 Days of Dead (just completed today). It also includes grate commentary for each day plus additional links to downloads and setlists from previous editions of 31 Days: http://www.phantasytour.com/bands/phish/threads/4108337/31-days-of-dead… (OFFICIAL) 30 DAYS OF DEAD Here’s the dead.net page with this year’s 30 Days (scroll down to download all 30 at once): http://www.dead.net/30daysofdead?intcmp=home/carousel2 For the 2012, 2013 & 2014 editions of 30 Days of Dead: http://www.endlessboundaries.com/free-download-30-days-of-dead-2014/ Not sure where I downloaded 2011 from, but you’ll find the 2010 30 Days on Lossless Legs: http://www.shnflac.net/details.php?id=1e0613884578efe212c8a484665ede094…

Another year gone. Been thinking about posting all day, started and quit thrice already. So much has happened and I don't know where to begin, so I will just type. I remember the morning of January 16th when dead.net posted the FTW announcement. All the anticipation, effort, excitement, heartbreak and the camaraderie we developed. The whirlwind leading up to Chicago, the shows, the pic a nic and most importantly the friendships. I'd like to thank marye for granting us this space, Tony for his time, organization and spreadsheets, George for his patience and wit, Tami and Oat Willie (say hi to Pam) for their artistic contributions, Al, Al's horse, Adam, ASL, Totes, Ms. Katniss, Stanley, Stella, Geeky for her geekiness, Bob Loblaw, spascarella, mortatone, Roadking, Jose, Zeke, Jambo, Dire, JeffTOO, Kurt, Tom Hanlon, Swannie, GOB, Mkav, Boo Boo, OzarkMatt for his outstanding photography, and Miami for spinning awesome tunes and briving a mean dus, let us not forget our fearless leader Mayor Klangstone, yes, I know... it all would have happened without him, but it never would have been as much fun.... :-) To all those daydreamers not mentioned above, you are not forgotten.... I would like to thank our families for their patience and understanding of our obsession with all things Dead.... Well ..time to idle ba dus and watch the last sunset of the year here in da Buff.... If you go out to celebrate, may the four winds blow you safely home..... Hey Sarge, for old time sake, play that song, you know the one that Guy Lombardo made famous....eh? (he was Canadian). Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne! For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne. We'll take a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne. ....now, pass me that bone.....and a cup of Philz..... Happy New Year!

...it's all so spanking new...we hardly got the wrapping paper off the New Year, and already there's music in the air. Richie, ditto to your sentiments earlier. We all had such a grand adventure in 2015, as strangers stopped strangers...and you know the rest of THAT story. May your cup be full of what we shared this past year; May the melody of life find you dancing in your seats, in the aisles, and on the byways and highways of your path; May all of your pesky detours, chuck holes, speed traps and traffic jams that we all face in our journeys be short and sweet; And may the river continue to sing sweet songs to rock your soul. Here's to you and you and you, and fellow Sunshine Daydreamers everywhere: Ready or not, 2016, here we come. Le chaim!

Very well said, Mr. Rrrgrrrr and geoihavemyfingeronthepulseoftheuniversemeister! It's been a phenomenal last year and the Daydreamer experiment ended up being a resounding laboratory success. I had to skip the California swing of Dead & Co., but rumor has it that there will be more songs to fill the air next year! We might be able to fudge and say 51 years so far . . . . Hope to see some of you at the shows! Have a safe and healthy new year everybody.

Has anyone heard how Matt and Holly fared in the flooding?
user picture

Member for

Thanks for your concern. Matt and I live in the city so our home is fine. The surrounding areas are bad for sure and the areas where we hike are inaccesible. This was historic flooding and a smaller river the Meramec had record breaking crest levels. Higher than the flood of 93'... It will be a large mess to clean up for sure. The good thing is now we know where not to move. It is heartbreaking for me to watch the flood footage. Seeing the highway 55 bridge that we cross to go hiking underwater was very unnerving. Hopefully the debris and water dont negatively effect the structure too much. There were houses floating down the river. Black muddy river, roll on forever...I dont care how deep or wide...

I was doing road work with the Dead and a few other bands back then and I recall the unbelievable flooding. It was amazing to see whole towns underwater. Stay safe and dry!

We drove from St Louis area to DFW on 12/27. We could see the high levels of the creeks and rivers along 55 and 44. With all the rain on 12/27 and 12/28, we were not surprised to hear of all that flooding. I haven't heard much since then in terms of clean up, etc. Prayers and best wishes to all those folks in tbe waters' path.

Yes, a sad day as David was a unique talent. I called an old friend today and reminisced about going to see the Sound+Vision tour in 1990. Bowie was to retire his old songs and you could call in to vote for songs you wanted performed. After voting for Rock 'n' Roll Suicide, well...don't let the sun blast your shadow,don't let the milk float ride your mind. Great memories.

That is great that you were able to see him live. His producer has said that his latest album and video were a parting gift to his fans. I dont have it in me to watch it right now but the first line from the new single is "Look up here, I'm in Heaven." If there is a Heaven, that is where David Bowie belongs...Rock'n'Roll Heaven.

Sad to hear of Glenn Frey's passing--he and Don Henley were a big part of the Aspen/Snowmass/Woody Creek scene for many years. You were just there, amirite? One of my friends used to be the caretaker for Don Henley and she said that his philosophy was that people go to concerts to be able to sing along with the exact recording, so he always wanted the concert to be consistent with the CD. Legend had it that he would fire backing musicians if they missed a beat or a note. I always thought it is the antithesis of the Dead in that respect, but very enjoyable music nonetheless. RIP. Also, hello Klang--hope you are well!

Greg, good to hear from you, hope you're handling winter alright. I was in Boulder and Aspen CO area in late September. Funny, when there was jonesin' to hear Jackson, Poco, Eagles and Fogelberg....must be the thin air and the Rocky Mountain highs.... You are on to something with that Henley reference. I first saw the Eagles in support of One Of These Nights in 75, very good, spontaneous, sloppy. I caught them again in 79, no longer the same outfit and not cuz Felder and Meisner were gone, they were sonically perfect, and so every time I've seen them since. This past July 18,000 seat arena sold out in da buff. Guess perfection sells..... there's a train leaves here this morning, I don't know, one I might be on.....

In case anybody's like me and didn’t realize it, you can buy tickets now. From the Deadandcompany.com scroll down to the two “FOLSOM FIELD ... BOULDER” shows and click on “TICKETS”. That’ll take you to the Colorado U ticket page for the D&Co shows. Click on “DEAD & COMPANY PLATINUM SEATING: FIND TICKETS” which will take you to a page where you can search for seats by section, row and price and add to your cart. (Click the link at the top of this page to set up an account w/ your contact info so you can check out.) Worked fine for me, but I had to re-click on the “Tickets” link on the Dead & Co page once because I initially got a “page not found” message on the CU page. BTW: I have accounts on Ticketmaster and Livenation.com, but apparently they weren’t needed and no password or codes were required during the process.
