Hi Canadian Heads, I just ordered the Grateful Dead Movie yesterday using some points I didn't even know I had accumulated...it was expensive, though with the points it's like its free! Anyway looking forward to it arriving and to firing it up. I remember experiencing it in the mid-eighties and havn't seen it since. Any recommendations as to 73' dead, I am starting to gravitate toward 73' lately..... Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat

Anyone out there in the Toronto area? I took a bus into the city last night for a great drum jam, felt like the Tam Tam on the beach! Cherry Beach with 100 or so people, drums, waves, sand, fire, moon and a dancing, lit-up kayak is my kind of party! I used to go to Sunday drumming in High Park in the early '90s - it's what got me into playing instruments and the rest is history... This weekly jam is an evolution of those days. It alternates between Trinity Belwoods park and Cherry Beach. Next week: Trinity! (7-11pm) Anyone else have great drumming circles where they live? Good to know about when travelling this great wide country... K

Hi K, Sounds like fun but I can't directly help out. Though, I recommend you check out the Hillside Festival - http://www.hillsidefestival.ca - for am amazing festival at the end of July that has such activities and spontaneous jamming through the night. Great festival, went the last two years, amazing, can't make it this year. :( Oh well will find other fun, especially in August. Actually come to think of it....I am taking August off....ahhhhh! Any good festivals/concerts or other happenings worth checking out in South Western Ontario or elsewhere in August?? Peace, Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat

Hi Playin It is hard to locate a proper list of Ontario festivals - I was having slim luck just now. http://www.festivalsandeventsontario.ca/ has many events listed but many music fests are missing. I don't have so much info on SW Ont fests but I do know that Peterborough holds our free music fest on Saturday, August 29th - a great day out and worth the travel. K

Hey Now: Any body out there see the show in Quincy in May? I was just listening to my download again..man drums was awesome, the women are smarter was an unexpected treat and box of rain was a nice closer. I didn't get my Franklins after about 13 years without a show but it was all good. It was my first show since jerry left us in the 90's and it felt like coming home. Plus, i went with a friend who had never seen the Dead back in the day and now he's on the bus. Any dead type gatherings I can find out about in Vancouver? "One watch by Night, One watch by day if you get confused listen to the music play...."

Franlinsfantastic, I do agree with your names proclamation....Franklin's Tower is fantastic!.....my earliest Frankin's memory (and strongest).....I can remember getting out of my tree at the cottage and being blown away by Franklin's Tower from Dead Set. I didn't know much about live dead performances at the time, nor did I know the song, it just got in under my skin and lifted me up higher and higher.....roll away the dew.....that makes me think of this year's Buffalo show.....the entire place lifted up into space at bunch of times......they are so good at that..... Anyway, I guess I came here just to say hi....so, hi there... Peace, Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat P.S. sorry can't help out with your Vancouver scene quest...good luck!

Hey All: Well, Playing in the..thanks for sharing your Franklins story. Ya we all have some some song that just hits a certain chord and that is the one for me..love the lyrics and the help ..slip ...into.. My favorite to listen to was a show the Silver Bowl Las Vegas in 1993..i saw it live and it was the best Franklin's ever..light and dancing and magical..gives me shivers to think about it and the kindess of the strangers that were friends i hadn't met yet..great times. Nice to hear someone elses experience. Wish i sawmore shows this time around find it a little hard here up North but there is such a great network of folks on the bus like yourself makes it easier to continue to "see the light once in a while if you look at it right" ..it's a state of mind..Nothing left to do but smile smile smile... p.s still love to hear of any local events in Vancouver BC cheers and blessings ..warms my heart and fills me with many grateful memories foreverdead in vancouver :) Deadhead in Vancouver

Blown away by recent postings - Wow. Free to I-pod owners. Just go on the Apple site. And search for the Dead Pod. It will be well worth your time. Hosted by a guy dubbed "The professor". It starts with a breif intro and then the music plays straight through with a small closing statement. Enjoy. Peace, Playin'

Hey Franklin's I just had dinner at a place here in Peterborough I didn't know existed - Electric City Gardens - turns out the owner, Toby, used to also own the Naam in Kitsilano back in '74. Don't know if you've ever eaten there, but it's a pretty cool place with a longstanding good veggie vibe. Anyway, thinkin of ya! K

Hi Franklins Glad Naam rang a bell. The Electric City Gdns serves fairly pricey but delish entrees - Toby was trained as a steak chef but he has branched way out - he made amazing special veggie dishes for us so it's not their regular fare, but the asparagus soup was divine =) As for lack of BC heads, I think there's just very few of us here from Canada at all so we have this wide geographic spread - your arrival just extended it several hundred miles! We'll all keep working on recruiting as best we can... I'm just so freaking excited that in 4 days... "SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER!!" to quote Alice Cooper. I'm going to kick it off with a reggae gig Thursday night at the Rivoli - Dub Trinity & the Idlers double bill - if you know anyone in the TO area, send'em down - we'll be looking for a hearty dancing crowd. Then Friday night at the good ol' Red Dog, Ptbo... Canada Day in Cavan, and then OFF TO ROTHBURY!!! Yeah, summer's starting right... HAPPY SOLSTICE EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love, K

Hi buddies! No, I didn't spontaneously combust at Rothbury, nor did I fall off the edge of the earth, though I came close... Went to the furthest place East in North America - Cape Spear, Newfoundland, as part of our maritimes family vacation part 2. I've been on perpetual holiday since the last time we spoke. Our launching point was Sackville NB for a Canadian Studies conference at Mount Allison. Hit the north shore of Nova Scotia, went to a Ceilidh in Mabou, went round the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Highlands Nat'l Park, took the ferry to Newfoundland where we partied in St. John's with our buddies' reggae band, the Idlers (St. John's is probably my favourite Canadian city now - this visit was very convincing), drove to the west coast of NL to hike up the Gros Morne and ogle at the gorgeous mountains. Delayed 11h waiting for the ferry back to N. Sydney, went to the Alexander Graham Bell museum in Baddeck, Cape Breton (amazing mind - what an innovator - he's my new hero), over the bridge to PEI, then burned it back through N.B. and Quebec and now we're back home in beautiful Peterborough! I loved swimming in the ocean again, and this time not as cold as on the south shore of NS! So I promised you all a Rothbury update. So I will deliver if you've got the time... Big, fat, yummy 4 days. Couldn't see and do it all, but we shure as hell tried... I think it's too much to post here, so I was inspired to create a blog ... I'm kind of excited - I started with coverage of MSG and will add Rothbury in the next couple of days. My address is: http://sseeeeiinnggddoouubbllee.blogspot.com/ I think this is a good option as I can add photos and blab on as long as I want. I hope you are all having a great summer - though topsy-turvy - cold and rainy in Ontario, hot and dry with fires on the West coast. Westsiderider: there is another BC head here - FranklinsFanatic. Check out the previous posts to hook up. Good to be back - I missed you guys. Love, K

Hi everybody, I wanted to post it in the Memorial section, but I thought it might be better received here... My great uncle died on Friday - he was the closest thing I had to a Grandpa. He was also a famous Canadian: Ted "Teeder" Kennedy played for the Leafs from '43-'57, he was their captain, 5-time Stanley Cup champion and winner of the Hart trophy. He was 83 and had a very good life, was adored by all of us kids, and was just the most gentle soul you'd ever meet. He will be sorely missed by our family and many hockey fans. If you want to check out a great video interview, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5BuUysYEeM I didn't even know there was video footage of him. He was a team player... maybe he helped instill in me my strong interest in collectivity and collaboration =) An inspiring character for sure - I feel lucky to have known him. K

Dear K,Sorry to hear of the loss of your great uncle. I recentlky lost a great uncle and aunt (one month a part). They were a great inspiration to me and many others. They were two of the most loving and inclusive people I have ever met. I am lucky and enriched to have been included in their lives. On a lighter note, it looks like we are all on summer vacation.....weee. Well I must get back at it. K, I'll check out that blog of yours in September when I need a break from things, until then its back to vacation for me!!!!!! P.S. I enjoyed reading the book "In search for the Sound" by Phil Lesh. It opened my eyes a little wider to this group, the music, the experimentation of the Haight Days and the members of the band. Thinking of Phil, makes me smile. Peace. ...and representing Halifax. Made it to Buffalo this year with some old friends; great time. Must've had the soundboard recording in my vehicle for a good several weeks afterward. My recollections of being a Canadian Head were the humourous but good-natured exchanges with American Heads and venue staff who didn't quite grasp the geographic realities of getting around the country during tour time. Like, "You're from Nova Scotia?!? That's practically up in Canada, isn't it?" I remember one time for the Alpine Valley run in the late 80's, a guy the next car over thought he'd like to do the following show in Toronto by driving across the northern shore of Lake Superior instead of the more direct route via Chicago-Detroit. "Well, it's a great drive, and full points for your sense of adventure, but Kingswood's the day after tomorrow. You'd pretty much have to duck out during tonight's encore, and drive non-stop for the next 30 hours." Mind you, it had its advantages. Like one time I missed the GDTS lottery for a Hampton run, and instead ordered direct from the Coliseum. Then calling up later to check on the status of my order, the lady on the phone exclaiming to her co-workers in the box-office "It's the boy from Nova Scotia calling about his tickets!" ( I guess they didn't get too many).

Hi and Welcome Great that you're representing Halifax here - now we're spanning coast-to-coast. Was just there in July, caught a bit of Jazz Fest and the Tall Ships - great to be back in one of my favourite cities again. What is your work there, paid or otherwise? I like your funny description of American heads being oblivious to our geography .. I guess many Americans have no reason to learn much about Canada, it's just hicksville to them. Some are great appreciators and travel up here, but the vastness can catch first-timers by surprise. Glad you're here - feel free to post as often as you like. We're still a pretty small group, but good company. K

Greetings Can-head friends, old and new... I miss reading of your whereabouts and I'm glad some new folk have dropped by this page. Is anyone heading out to NY for the Furthur shows? (Not me this time) poetprince: when in Toronto, look up the Caution Jam. There's lots of good music in the city, but that band is particularly Dead-icated. Say hi to the guitarist, Eric, and tell him Kirsten sent you. =) How long are you around? Richard & Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat: J'espere que ca va bien, les camarades. I really hope things are super fine with you both. I am teaching full-time (good) but my contract will end soon (also good). I'm looking forward to a bit of breathing space and freedom for music and thinking and such. Hope your fall was as rich and warm as mine! See you soon in e-dead land... A bientot, K
