Man, I sure hope that I haven't inadvertently vined anything that was once MP3. Most of the lossless I have vined I received from another source, and I don't think it was ever MP3, and I KNOW I didn't convert it to MP3. That would really suck. I wish someone else would post on the WAV v lossless topic, especially regarding my statement that a WAV copy of a copy of a copy of a copy etc of a WAV copy converted from lossless has more loss than the original WAV copy. I might be wrong there. But, I will admit, I was a little irritated by the WAY I was told I was wrong. That may be oversensitivity on my part, or even the fact that posts, like emails, can be easily misinterpreted. I have been busy with other stuff and haven't posted some things I wanted to post. The 68 vine will be posted soon. All I have to do is copy and burn CB's disc. Oh Yeah has not gotten back to me about the burning speed or whatever the problem he and other MAC users are having with how my PC/Vista burns DVDs, so this will go out as my past vines have gone out. I will finish up the 77 after that and then take a little break from posting vines. So, although I said I would reseed the Nov 72 vine, I am going to bow out on that and hope someone else fills that hole. I have some other stuff to vine (I just got ALL of 1979), but am going to hold off for a while, though I will eventually vine it.

let's get back to the nuts and bolts of why we're here...the music...if you want to confirm that a vine has been converted from MP3 to lossless there are several ways to do that. I am guessing 95% of us take on faith that the vines circulated as lossless are lossless - and the rest have the means to check that they are the real deal. On that note...how about a vine a la the '77 lossless project? I propose the Garcia '74 shows all lossless and on DVD only. This would be in 5 installments. Many of them will be audience shows recorded by one of our great preservationist brothers (along with others), the recently deceased Jerry Moore, along with a large number of SBD recordings. Much of this material are the shows recorded with the late Merl Saunders. In my humble opinion, '74 was one of Jerry's best years, if not his best year for solo non-GD work. Below I list the 5 installments of this collection, if any one has any improved/additional shows to add let my know via PM and I will add them. As far as I know, these represent the best of what is out there, but again, what the hell do I know? Are there really vines that have been downloaded as mp3 and encoded it flac? I use Cool Edit Pro to find this out when I download. If a file has already been changed to mp3 it doesn't improve when its coverted back. If people do not check for this, music can really get polluted! If its in mp3 format so be it, everyone will know what they are getting. Please do not them back to flac.

Raise your hand if you truly *missed* Erickat while he was "gone"? Perhaps he rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning with his unjust and prejudice actions towards me (with no apology).... but I just get blow-hard vibes from virtually *all* of his comments... (i.e. "I've been here, and have been listening, and responding and will continue, dispite the lack of "superstar" status that has been conferred upon some who have arrived after me & sought the limelight to their own supplication - e.g. putting their name into each vine they seed, even if it's a group effort.") Nobody's trying to steal your "limelight" Bro...and you are/were hardly a "superstar"....Dstache takes that cake...he has streamlined the vining process and at the same time he's caught it up with the times (someone had to do it)...you're vining, and probably living, in the past, Man. Times have changed since that picture was taken... ;) Don't be mistaken though my fellow music lover...your logic is valid....but only in the days of Great Wizards and Masters, neither of which apply to this century or to reality in general. Sorry if you do not feel as important or relevent as you have in the past but that is something only you have control of...it's *your* legacy, and yours alone...live and let live...If you don't want to sign up for specific vines, don't. But insulting and demeaning comments towards individuals who have done absolutely nothing to you to warrant such actions is immature and honestly makes me wanna vomit. I have contributed my 2 cents and hope they are well spent. ...I would like to give a special thank you to Dstache for all he has done for my, and many's, collection of Good Ol' Grateful Dead!!!! I (we) now have a collection that will last the test of time without having to spend hours of our time trying to obtain it....now we can use that time to ENJOY it!!!! And for that, "Great Wizard"...your "apprentices" are....eternally grateful. anywho...back to LIFE. :) and try to smile a lil bit...it feels MUCH better :)

That one kinda gets me wondering uumm whats the point in downloading mp3 converting to LL then spend twice the time or more to download it from shn/flac as shn/flac. I can just download the mp3 then convert it to shn/flac myself ,.? thats a whole lot of time converting downloading/uploading , so how much if any data is lost doing things this way ?

In my vine killers post, I included Brother Tom in the second category and had him being suspected in the slayings of 2 vines, Cream Filling and Matrix # 1 (I think those were the two). I messed up re: Cream Filling as the person AFTER him on that vine, Solix, had posted saying he sent it to T.Crawford. So clearly, Brother Tom did NOT kill that vine. As for the other vine, and I believe I posted this, he was the last person on the vine, and no one else signed up for 2 months after he posted having received it. He has been busy at work and will pass it on ASAP. Sorry BT.

If I get no reply then those folks will be skipped. Gotta keep the vines alive !! Don`t want to keep other people waiting . That is all .. Hope you all have a very nice holiday weekend !! I don't know if he has since passed on the vines that stalled with him. Here is the relevant excerpt from my original post: gratefulmikes appears to have killed at least 8 vines (funiculi funicula, 93 by request, Legion of Mary, Winterland June 77, NYE 83, Summer 82, Greek 84 and LOM Mystery). NOTE THAT he is signed up to soon receive Europe 74 so heads up birdsong1969nj and Jimbo (unclear who has it right now)!!!! He may also have killed Red Rocks 9/8/83 (or Deadhead Ben never sent it to him)

Should vine like April 71, 5 dvd/flac be in "part" ? I think it move faster in this configuration. Just a suggestion, what do you think?Share the LOVE! Richard.

Huh? Are you saying you think it is better when the vines are smaller (ie the 1973 SHN/FLAC vines which are 2 DVDs per part) or larger (ie the April 71 which was 5 DVDs)? I have been trying to mix them up. The 1973 SHN/FLAC vines are all 2 DVDs each and the 1970 SHN/FLAC Part 1 (and Part 2 coming soon) and Early 1973 SHN/FLAC, which I just posted, are 4 DVDs each.

I like the smaller vines too. I made the 1973 SHN/FLAC vines 2 DVDs, but then the same people were signing up in the same order, so they were going to receive more than 1 2 DVD vine at one time. So I figured I might as well make my next ones 4 DVDs each (1970 SHN/FLAC). When I finally put together the 1977 vines (see 1977 Project thread for more info), I will have to make each part 4 or 5 DVDs, as there will be about 25 DVDs total, and I don't want to do 10 parts. The bigger vines are more efficient in the sense that you only need one package, one trip to the post office and a smaller postage fee. The smaller vines should be quicker for people to turn around.

Is there a new vine watchdog amongst us? Once upon a time there was a video dvd of Tinley Park from 7/23/90. Jimmy C never received it and his predecessor mailed it without copying it: does SOMEONE have a copy? Regarding gratefulmike, I bumped into him awhile back in Overland Park, KS. I'll see if I can run into him again and get an update on any vine stockpiling he may be experiencing.

I prefer dvd vines of any size . for some reason dvd vines just seem to go easier for me then cdr vines . 2 4 6 dvd`s it`s all good with me . Skipping people ,, while i`m here let`s make sure we skip sakparadise AGAIN . this is the second time he vanished with , well i don`t know what vines he killed this time . but he is un responsive at the time . so the let`s skipp list goes as 1) gratefullmikes 2) sakparadise can anyone think of more to add to this list ? feel free .. any objections also feel free to let me know, but I think something like this list should be posted on a regular basis as people vanish and well I don`t feel like going through every thread searching for mia people and posting . Any thoughts on this ? Oh also while i`m here I have had a real shity week and vines leaving me have been a little slow and i want to apoligize for that . Sorry for my tardyness folks .I will now post everything that went out yesturday .

I am also concerned about Markinthedark. I have e-mailed him and have not heard anything. It is really not like him. He is a wonderful friend and went out of his way to help me and many others. The sign of a grate human being. Hoping all is well with him. Just know his heart is full of love and he is gone now for something that must be really affecting him. On MitD and Stuman's list. Although I spoke with gratefulmikes right before I left last week. He's super hard to get a hold of. I don't know, its a tough call, but I wouldn't blame you if you skipped him... BTW I'm back from Rothbury *WOW* and I got a feeling there is a stack of vines waiting for me at the post office. If someone can`t return a PM they should be skipped , that shows they are unreliable. However we do have some vetrans of the vineyard here that don`t return pm`s but those are reliable ones, That have been here for a while . I almost skipped Brewsterboy once , somone sent me his address and i knew he is reliable . just have to be very observant I guise. and keep everyone posted as to what is going on with folks .

My big concern though is the vines he killed already. If that was not the case, I would be a little more patient. I want nothing more then for gratefulmikes to come back to us, figure out his vine situation and become a thriving member of this community free to enjoy and share this music. Hi guys, I've got the June '74 and sakparadise is after me; I just PMed him earlier this evening, so he hasn't had time to respond yet, but I note that stuman recently put sakparadise on the "skip" list with gratefulmikes. Has anyone heard anything from sakparadise recently? Thoughts? Bueller? ~~~~~~~ "Goin' home, goin' home, by the waterside I will rest my bones; listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul" "I will walk alone by the black muddy river and sing me a song of my own"

If you mean the one with 6/15 and 8/3, I got it 2 days ago. I copied it that night, PM'd Space Otter, and am waiting to hear back.

That's the one. I posted this then DMTT posted that he mailed it. This one is dead. Jai-Alai Fronton, Miami, FL 6/22-23/74 Vine. PM'd Emilee and she said Slimee has it. So 2 from 76 is good. I'm fairly new so I don't want to bitch but for this thing to work people have to post.

I noticed some confusion with a few vines, Dylan/Dead for instance . you guys have to copy and paste the list from time to time , let`s all try to keep the lists updated . I`m sure your fellow viners would appreciate it .

To whet your appetites, here is what I am working on: (1) The final 2 parts of the 1977 lossless vine, everything from 6/4-12/31, except for the officially released shows. Part 3 will be posted sometime within the next 2 weeks. I had a problem with a disc and am waiting for someone to send me a replacement. Part 4 will be posted a week after I post Part 3. (2) Part 2 of the 1970 SHN/FLAC vine. I will post it this week. (3) November 1972. Bob's vine died a while back and I have these shows. This is probably my lowest priority at the moment though, so y'all will have to sit tight on this. (4) The rest of 1968. I should soon be receiving just about everything from that year. Bob already vined about 10 shows from 68 in one of the Eurovines. I won't vine those shows and you will need to sign up for both our vines to get everything. The sources will be: gd68-01-20 sbd jools 19470 shn gd68-01-23 sbd jools 20347 shn gd68-01-27 sbd jools 14736 shn gd68-02-02 sbd jools 15801 shn gd68-02-03 sbd jools 14987 shn gd68-05-xx sbd unknown gd68-06-19 sbd cotsman 4511 shn gd68-08-03 flac miller upgrade gd68-08-21 sbd cotsman 17355 shn gd68-08-28 sbd cotsman 18104 shn gd68-09-02 sbd miller 22095 shn gd68-09-02 sbd volkerding 1979 shn gd68-09-20 sbd vernon 5930 shn gd68-10-10 sbd miller 4513 shn gd68-10-13 sbd ed 10910 shn gd68-10-13 sbd gdlive shn gd68-10-30 sbd sacks 1205 shn gd68-12-07 sbd naines 16944 shn gd68-12-16 sbd hartbeats 4529 shn gd68-12-20 sbd tiedrich 9532 shn gd68-12-21 sbd tiedrich 9533 shn Pretty full plate as you can see. If I may, I am still hoping that a kind soul vines the rest of the spring and summer 90 shows, as well as more from 1988 (esp the only 2 shows in which Gentlemen Start Your Engines were played). Rick has put a good dent in 1988, and he and others have supplied a decent amount of 1990 already, but there is more, and too much of anything is just enough.
