Got a great Wharf Rat playing right now...Jerry's in rare form on this one...using Firefox so I don't have the show-date info, but it's sweetly spooky. I'll reiterate what I said yesterday in the 'what are you listening to now' thread...I hope Sirius keeps this channel going for as long as possible after it officially launches. And it's good to know that Gans is helping Sirius out... "Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right."

That would be very sweet if it becomes free as it is out of my price range at present! It all sounds like a really great and fantastic thing indeed! This would really expand the Dead's audience in the international market! J :) Are you kind?

On the note of Satellite radio...I saw a car kits for them in a local retail store for 28.95 with all the adapters and such. Not sure what the monthly fees are to get it going, but as a consumer without it now, it got me to look. The GD channel thread also made me look twice. I can get my shows for free off the internet, but you can only listen to NPR and the classic rock stations for so long ya know... Eric

...shall we go, you and I while we can... When Sirius radio announced that they formed a relationship with Warner's/ Rhino for the Satellite Station in late May,Sirius simultaneously took out an unsecured loan of 250 million dollars from Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley did not make that loan lightly. "Unsecured" means there was no collateral involved. It's easy to see what happened here. Sirius stock is down, the XM merger is taking longer than expected, right? So the reason Morgan Stanley gave Sirius a quarter of a billion dollars was to secure its relationship with Warners/Rhino and to give Sirius some cash to get the start up going in this relationship going with Warners/Rhino.in the form of the GD channel. The GD channel is a good test balloon to see how things will work, and so far everyone loves it! Two months were spent in getting things together programmatically (David Gans input, etc.) to make it a success. So I think that the GD channel goes full time August 10, or if not shortly there after ironing out any last minute wrinkles. This is the bottom line, boys and girls: Warners wants to own Sirius and XM for their satellite bandwidth, Sirius and XM want to make a boatload of money on that sale and Morgan Stanley wants the interest pay off on its loan(part of which went for a right to broadcast vault material). This is the world of corporate finance. And BTW, I'VE NEVER SEEN A MORE PESSIMISTIC BUNCH OF DEADHEADS! you're gonna have your "radio" station, soon for free, so don't worry!

I am loving the DEAD channel. I'm a little pissed they won't simply start the GD channel. They said sometime this summer...well its Mid August already. (I just think it will disapear for another month after the 9th)

...shall we go, you and I while we can... I'm gonna bend this thread for a minute just to respond that all monoopolies are not bad, in fact most that are approved are benign. Don't think Warners is the bad guy, THE BAND WOULDN'T HAVE A WIDE AUDIENCE WITHOUT THEIR CONTRACT WITH WARNERS FROM '67 TO '73! An believe me, the money made on a Grateful Dead Channel, music CD's and merchandise is NOTHING when you compare it to the relationship with Sirius (and XM) that will get Warners the satellite bandwidth necessary to transmit first run feature movies to theaters around the world without any middlemen in the analog world. That's millions of dollars per film, my friend, and that's what this is really all about. Trust me, I did the homework. You're gonna have "satellite radio" free soon enough, so that films can be advertised on it.It costs literally nothing for the GD channel to exist. One last thing to remember,Warners/Rhino did not buy the Vault (another common misconception) they lisenced it from the band for ten years, so in 8 1/2 years, there will be a new deal to make for both parties.

DG - Sorry to take it all out on you. I realize that there will be both good and bad to come from this Rhino deal. This web site for instance, is the best thing to come out of it so far. I just feel like I am always fighting the man to get to listen to the GDH. First, we got it on in Atlanta. Then they pushed it back to the middle of the night. Then it left all together. Now the XM access is scrubbed. I also have mixed feelings regarding the satelite merger. I want it to go through so I can get the Grateful Dead station and Hour, but I honestly don't feel like it should be allowed. I feel like the Bush administration has screwed up the system so much already, its hard for me to get behind another manipulation of the system to support a monopoly. I miss Jerry and the boys screwing it up the old fashioned way - with their own label. Warner Bros is a large corporation and I can't help feeling like at some point, when something more profitable comes along or if someone like Rupert Murdoch buys them, this will all go away. PS: You sound like Jake Blues (John Belushi) lieing in the storm sewer begging Cary Fisher for his life and flashing his puppy dog eyes when you say "It wasn't my fault!" Peace

    Anti-trust Law
...shall we go, you and I while we can... The federal anti-trust statute says that 4 (or fewer) companies controlling more than 50% of a market constitutes a monopoly that is not legal. This is the hold-up on the merger between Sirius and XM. Ironically, niether stock is doing all that well. The most probable outcome here is that the FCC approves the merger and a federal district court hears arguments on the approval of the merger. Since Warner Bros. (the parent company of Rhino), wishes to "join" Sirius in other projects, involving the satellite transmission of feature films into your neighborhood theater, for example, Warners may acquire both companies and represent them as a "multimedia delivery system" to avoid the monopoly issue. Then, these two entities cease to be "radio stations" (already a misnomer) and are simply companies which so;d their satellite bandwidth to Warner's along with some programming(or not). The Dead Channel would certianly remain, but reorganization like this allows for the dissolution of the separate companies and the renegotiation of all their contracts (like Howard Stern's,for instance). Under this senario, look for the price of "satellite radio" to drop dramatically and potentially to be free sooner or later. Meanwhile it's 13.95 a month, and portable. The iPod analogy is quite correct. Also there is stream capturing technology available if you wish to record from this media.

Shares of Sirius/xm rose 3 cents yesterday and are now at 13 cents a share. They need someone to refinance their debt to keep them out of bankruptcy.

Liberty Media Corp. will lend Sirius/xm $530 million dollars. It also says S/xm has 20 million subscibers which means they should be bringing in, if I'm correct, over $200 million per month. I wonder why they can't get by on that? Could someone inform me?

I've posted this before, but have not seen any responses. Does anyone else have a problem with serius not posting schedules for three times a day concerts on their Grateful Dead site? Spotty at best, most of the time it's not posted. REALLY HARD to do this ,I guess.Makes it really difficult to record shows we've been at or might want because it was a great show.Lots of posts about their financial state, but none about the lack of service we get? I contacted David Gans and have gotten a lil brainchild of mine to come to fruition...The "Tales" on March 8th will be a special on the subject of GD Tribute bands keeping the vibe alive and well...plus turning countless post-Jerry era fans onto the magic and love of The Grateful Dead (like myself)...this particular "Tales" will include interviews with Jimmy Tebeau-founder of "The Schwag" as well as some samples of their tunes....The Schwag hold summerlong camping festivals in a beautiful campground located in Salem, MO featuring all types of great music and of course shows by The Schwag....lots of vendors...LOTS of LOVE! So yeah, tune in this Sunday and enjoy! The torch is still burning brightly and there are masses new fans being turned on due to these tribute bands...Now Gans is even on the lineup for "Springjam" April 17+18! He's gonnaq experience the beauty firsthand...plus we'll get to hear him jam....NRPS is gonna be there, so is Donna Jean...in May Billy Kreutzman is gonna be there too...i encourage any/all to come check it out...visit www.theschwag.com for further details....Stu Allen from JGB with Melvin Seals is now on lead guitar for The Schwag....his Jerry vocals are fantastic....sounds just like late 80's-90's Jerry! Check it out...and tune in to the Tales From The Golden Road on March 8th! -pugdog "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul."

I hope our buddies at Sirius are doing well. I'm wondering if they are going to turn us on to some live Dead. I think a Madison Square Garden show would be worthy of a broadcast through-out the world and across the universe, maybe a Shoreline too!

Loved the Tipper Gore interview after she jammed with The Dead the other night. While they were doing the interview Bobby comes by and they start talking and Tipper starts a rap about the spiritual side of drumming and Bobby's like "I've heard That before", and then "I'm gonna go get a drink". Hilarious!

and thanks for the live Worchester show. My only complaint is that everything was turned up a couple clicks higher than the drum mix and there wasn't enough thunder, esp. on songs like Terrapin. As for the show, I thought One More Sat. Nite and a little four minute Johnny B. Goode encore was a disturbingly lame way to end the show. I know $100 to the boys holds about as much value as a penny does to the rest of us and they cannot understand the sacrifices their fans have had to make to attend these shows. But overall I thought they sounded pretty good and their were some very enjoyable moments.

If the Dead want to play One More Saturday Night I wish they would try doing it as a first or second set opener. I hate it when they close the show with it cause when you here the opening notes you know the show is over and then start hoping they'll play a good encore. As for Johnny B. Goode, if it's not a part of a 2- song encore, don't bother !

... on Mondays at 9:00 PM Eastern time? Why can't we have the complete and uncut concerts back in that time slot? Sirius advertised that there would be 3 concerts per day. Now for some reason on Mondays we only get 2 concerts. Haven't these Guest DJ shows been rerun about 10 times anyway? I never understood why they decided to use the scheduled concert time for these DJ shows... Is help on the way David, or or will changing this be a slipknot of towering confusion? Thank you for your consideration in this matter... :^ )

the storyteller makes no choice... Howdy, I'm happy to say that my very own "Head Set" airs tomorrow (7/3) on the G.D. channel on Sirius/XM! I read short sections from my new book, Growing Up Dead: The Hallucinated Confessions of a Teenage Deadhead, and put together some other intros to accompany the tunes. All the songs are from shows between 1987-1989. The show airs tomorrow (7/3) at 5PM EST. For Sirius/XM subscribers, the Grateful Dead channel is #32... but if you're here, you already know that... is in error... Was supposed to be 8-16-91, and the first was played as advertised. The problem is that they played the second set of 8-18-91. Is there any way to straighten this out before the replay on FRIDAY, AUG 21st at Noon Eastern Time? Thank you very much for any help, in advance! I would try to contact Sirius myself, but they are just a bit less than say, responsive...

I think Sirius responds to things written on Deadnet with songs. There have been a lot of times I've written something here and then a short time later will here a song on Sirius that seems directly related to my post and it seems like it's happened way to many times to be coincidence. I also think Ratdog and the Dead have been inspired to play a song in their sets a couple times from what I've written here. I'm sure they won't tell me though being the Pranksters that they are. Maybe it's just sirius synchronicity and strange coincidence but I like to think they're listening.

I enjoyed tonight's show, as usual. I appreciated the insights about muscians "borrowing", "stealing", "Interpreting" other artists' songs, styles, etc. This is what truly keeps the music alive, isn't it? I was especially touched by the idea that everything a muscian gleans and absorbs from other artists through research, playing or listening to their music contributes - over time - to that muscian's own voice and style as an artist. I can't think of a better example of this than Jerry Garcia, who was a true music academic - ever seeking, exploring and learning his craft. PS: Can't wait till Furthur on the East Coast! I can wait. From what I've heard so far, the drummers sound good, Jeff has impressed me,very enjoyable. As for John's guitar, I've found myself cringing way too much. I hope the boys can teach him a few things so I don't feel like I'm listening to a amateur copy-cat who needs to find his own musical, oh I don't know, "soul"? I hope by the time they hit the west coast I can say I've heard a vast improvement. Believe it if you need it, or leave it if you care?
