Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1968, 1982 and 1991, three very distinct and excellent eras in Grateful Dead history.

Our first stop this week is in Louisville, KY, on 12/7/68, where we have this classic sequence from the era of Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven. This is from the cassette master, so it sounds a bit muddier than a reel, with the cassette flip happening at the end of The Eleven, hence the cut in the music.

Next up is the start of the second set from the penultimate show if 1982, on 12/30/82 in Oakland, featuring Touch Of Grey; Throwing Stones> Franklin's Tower ; Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance > He's Gone. This sequence starts with two of the brand new songs from the Fall of 1982, two songs that would be a huge part of the Dead’s repertoire for the next 13 years.

Lastly this week is the first set from 9/4/91 in Richfield, OH, the tour-opener of an excellent tour, featuring Let The Good Times Roll; Jack Straw ; Jack-A-Roe ; Walkin' Blues ; Friend Of The Devil ; Black Throated Wind ; Tennessee Jed ; When I Paint My Masterpiece ; Cold Rain And Snow ; The Promised Land.

Yes 9/6/91 is the show i saw (my son's 2nd birthday)...great show. I was on my way to the one show that eventually was cancelled due to the blizzard. I did get to the rescheduled show that fall, i think it was.

Vince's first shows with the Dead were at Richfield 9/7-8/90. I attended 9/4-6/91 and 3/14/93 (the blizzard show). Having listened to all of the Richfield shows from each year they performed there, the '91 run (with Bruce!) is where it's at in terms of top notch performance, quality of the recording itself and song selection. 9/6/91 may be the single best show ever performed by the Dead in that venue. HIGHLY recommended! 9/4/91 is no slouch either.

it's fuzzy after all these years...I don't think I made this show but did catch 1 of the 3. Anyway, I agree with the inference I'm taking that Richfield hosted plenty of really, really good shows 91 thru 94. I think I caught 4 or 5 or 6 in that time....always a good time, and some stellar moments to be sure. it would be cool for a Richfield release to appear. I'd buy it/them...that's fo sho.

9/4/91 Richfield

I attended this run. Love these shows! Well worthy of release, yet likely won't see the light of day anytime soon, if even ever. I would certainly be a paying customer as I'm sure others would. At least it got shared here I guess.

Good selection. I was in the Coliseum for this show, as well as the next 2, and it rocked. The audience recording I have is quite good, especially the 2nd set with Scarlet > Fire. Bruce on the piano! I'll be seeing him in a few weeks...

gotta like Throwin' > Franklin's

and 12/7/68? gotta listen to that. today is 7/18...my first show was 34 years ago today. "Memories Misty watercolor memories" Schmaltzy but appropriate. My friend who took me there and I sat in the stands giggling uncontrollably for about 20 minutes afterward. "Wow! Wow! Wow!" We then went to the car and ate a pack of Oreos. Thank you GD for this long, strange trip. It will never end.

"say your piece and piss off" Was that the usual lyric in the early performances of this?

of being there for both Hunter's and the boys' debut of the song, I seem to recall that Hunter's version has "piss off," and I don't recall Jerry ever singing it. This may have actually come up in an interview with Jerry at some point. If anyone has a cite for Jerry singing the "piss off" version, bring it on!
