Sound the imperial trumpets! Bang the drum! Pop that champagne! Another Grateful Dead box set is comin’ your way! Yes, in the grand tradition of the beloved Fillmore West 1969 and Winterland 1973 boxes, comes Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings, a 9-CD box set that is sure to knock your tie-dyed socks off.
At this point, we probably don’t need to hype you on the glories of ’77 Dead. It was a magical time for the band, which was reinvigorated by a plethora of great new material—“Terrapin,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Passenger,” “Fire on the Mountain”—and really hitting its stride again following the October ’74 to June ’76 performing hiatus. The group spent much of the first three months of 1977 recording their Terrapin Station album with producer Keith Olsen, and Garcia also managed to find time to complete the much-anticipated Grateful Dead movie (which opened June 1, 1977). The third week of April, the band embarked on what most Dead Heads agree was one of the greatest tours ever: 26 concerts in the East and Midwest in a little over a month—an awesome stretch that produced so many great shows, a few of them already released in the Dick’s Picks series and subsequently (and more, no doubt, destined to come out down the road.)
So when the Dead returned to San Francisco’s Winterland for shows on June 7, 8, 9, they were pumped up and feeling good! They treated their hometown fans to three superb concerts that included excellent versions of much of their current repertoire, from the new combo of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain,” to a truly colossal, more than 30-minute “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower,” “Saint Stephen,” “Terrapin,” “Good Lovin’,” “Not Fade Away,” “The Other One”… too many favorites to mention (you can see the complete song lists here). Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings contains every note recorded from the three shows, more than nine hours of prime Dead, all taken from the master analog tapes, restored using the Plangent Processes, and mastered in HDCD by that inimitable sonic tweakster, Jeffrey Norman.
The nine discs are packaged in a beautifully designed box that includes artwork by Emek (you loved his crazy Winterland ’73 phantasmagoria); a 28-page booklet featuring a wonderful and illuminating new essay by Rolling Stone senior music editor David Fricke (who dubs this a “box of paradise and circus… six complete sets of inspired risk and collective explosion”); lots of great Winterland action shots by noted GD shutterbugs Ed Perlstein and Bruce Polonsky; and a couple of little pieces of period memorabilia we won’t reveal here.

Dead Shop Shipping strikes again

Please, please, please sort out your shipping. $103 standard shipping to Australia ??? That just can't be right now can it. Well, in any case, I've signed up for "Rush" shipping at $27.39 - seemed like a no-brainer - shipped in half the time at a third of the cost of "standard". You guys have been smoking the packing tape again haven't you.

Grumble - this always happens. Nearly every release has some sort of insane shipping cost attached to it. If it really costs over $100 to have this shipped to me, on top of the $USD 100 I'm already going to pay, I'm expecting to be given the master tapes to at least two of the the three nights or one of Robert Hunter's original notebooks.
I suspect it's easier for everyone if the price is just knocked down a bit...say by around $USD 95???

The site didn't recognize my login and password, so I had to create a new account. And to France, it wanted to charge me $78 for standard shipping, but only $22 for "rush" shipping. Go figure...
VAT ID?
There's no "cost" for a VAT ID, but only businesses can get them. I actually have one, so I entered it, but the above Italian poster suggests that you can't place an order without it? Is that true? If so, it's not only stupid, but it's illegal: you can't require someone to have a VAT ID to sell something to them; it's only required if you're within the EU and not collecting VAT from them.

The Box Sets are great. This one looks to be a real barn burner. Next on the wish list is the complete Radio City run from October 1980.

Boo!!! Hiss!!! I'm appalled! I can't believe this nonsense! EVERYBODY knows that we don't want complete runs. We want complete tours! When you just release the complete sets from three shows, it really breaks up the mood of the tour. This is just TERRIBLE.
(Ah, it feels nice to join the ranks of those who will complain about anything . . . but alas, I can't keep up the ruse. I'm STOKED about this box. Very, very cool!)

New, bizarre ordering ritual
Indeedy, this time the ordering ritual has gone well beyond the surreal. When I ordered, I was already logged-in. Having selected the box, I clicked on "continue" and came to a screen where I had to log-in (again). Typing my username and password resulted in getting a message saying username and/or password unknown. Tip: it recognized my e-mail address as my username, but not my username. (ok).I then had to enter all my address details etc. - exactly the same details that are already known to the system, of course. This included the fact that I live in the Netherlands. Presumably due to this, I then had to enter my VAT ID. I didn't - and I could go further. I then came to the hilarious postal charge section where, as reported elsewhere, "rush" was significantly cheaper than "standard". Finished? I expected no more surprises, but when I went from the ordinary summary to the printable version, bingo - $4,28 tax was mysteriously added. After printing this, I noticed that on the ordinary summary the $4.28 had appeared there as well - even though it was not there initially - honest, and I haven't been taking the brown acid. Of couse, I have never had to pay any tax before and do not expect to have to now, but maybe this is the result of not entering a VAT ID (which I do not have) earlier. Always an adventure, ordering at shop.dead.net. Oh - and there was never any mention of the bonus disc. As usual. I guess I just have to wait and see what transpires.

We're working on this, but, in the meantime, there's an actual explanation for why rush is cheaper than surface, for the moment at least, on international orders.
We’re using USPS International First Class/Prioirity for standard and UPS for rush. UPS doesn’t go under a pound, while the postal service does. However, the postal service gets VERY expensive when you get heavy, and our new UPS rates are now very good. So if you want to ship a single CD, USPS International FC will probably be the most affordable option but as the order gets heavier, UPS becomes very competitive.
You SHOULD be getting presented with various options, but this is the underlying reality, if it helps with making more informed decisions and explaining the apparently counterintuitive difference.

International Deadheads Unite! We have nothing to lose ...
Once more the international Deadhead community has been short-shirted, locked out of ordering this set on the web site and also over the phone. My account no longer functions. I can't set up a new account that works.
The brand is being seriously devalued. And it happens over and over and over again. I am getting sick of it, and it takes a lot to destroy my enthusiasm for Grateful Dead.

...Marye is alert and straight on the case, with rational explanations. Shipping options ARE presented, but to probably every potential purchaser outside the US, it was baffling to see that standard was soooo much more expensive than rush, so Marye's explanation was welcome. I am aware that postal charges change regularly and dramatically and the only real comparison available was the Winterland '73 box set - same size, weight, cost etc., but a year ago - and totally different rates. I am still curious to know why I saw no reference to a bonus disc throughout the ordering process, and also why I got billed $4,28 tax - which also appeared on the e-mail confirmation I have subsequently received. Frankly I cannot be arsed to get into a long exchange of mail with customer service over $4,28. The Euro is currently high against the Dollar. Of course, I will also have to pay about 40 Euros (about $56) VAT and import duty before the goods are finally in my clammy paws. That said, it still works out cheaper this way than buying it from a retailer in Europe. Realistically I cannot complain about anything as I conciously chose to order the thing and knew (roughly) what I was doing! Again, thanks to Marye who always seems to do the right thing at the right moment.
Why do these sets have to be so overpriced?
My turn to rant. Why do these box sets need to be so overpriced? There is a lovely Dick's Pick's release from 1977 that has 6-CDs and the quality of the music is every bit as good, if not better than this set and it costs $33.00. The Help-Slip-Frank from this Winterland run is the best EVER, I have had a high quality analouge of this for years. Why does this set have to be 100+ dollars. Do four more CDs really cost 65.00? I don't think this release is all that creative, two '77 releases in one year? Is that all they have in the vault? I like '77 but it gets a little boring, Samson and Estimated every night. I will end up buying it, because I am a collector, but I will find a used copy. The bonus disc doesn't float my boat for this release. The Fox show and Lakeland show has all the same stuff so getting the bonus disc is not imperative.
Now, when the yearly box set comes out next year let's do the Greek run from '85 or a killer run from 1976 (Orpheum). What would have been great would have been the whole "From Egypt with Love" run from 10/78. Too bad they hacked that up for Road trips.
By the way, the Cal Expo Road Trips is AWESOME! Get it with the Bonus Disc if its still available.
Not everyone has the same
Not everyone has the same experience, clearly. I was only presented with one shipping option, $75.00 ! That was before the system refused to accept my order but after it refused to acknowledge my long standing account.
This thing, whatever it is, cobbled out of stolen love, is badly broken.

But I also see that despite releasing 3 COMPLETE SHOWS, people still find things to complain about--yes complete shows but why 1977? I had to chuckle. Too many Samsons and Estimateds? Isn't that what Road Trips is for?
Oh, what a thankless job putting out the music has become.

Putting out music is not a thankless job. It's great we can still get stuff on CD, BUT why all the '77 stuff. I know the Betty Boards rock, but $100.00 come on. The packaging for these sets is substandard and I worry about my discs getting scratched before I even play them. In fact, the Des Moines disc from Road trips '74 was scratched, I can't make it through my Big River. Skipped the first time I played, then I noticed that it had a scratch on it. 100.00?
Now, as I was thinking about what could be the next release, I pondered something that would be really cool. Release something we have never heard on tape before. I was thinking about the three Festival Express Shows from July 1970. This is an underdocumented time in the Dead Vault and in official vault releases. The tapes defintely exist because the Dead wouldn't allow their image in the movie without getting all of the video and audio footage after completion of the movie. It was all recorded.
David Lemieux, get those tapes out and give them to the Pacific Microsonics guys and release it.
I still would love the Greek '85 run.

I ran into the same ordering snafu's as everyone else, but when I went through and recreated my account, I got through it to the point of placing the order (had given the CC#, addresses, all that stuff). Then if comes back and says "Cannot process order, to contact customer service". Like they're going to be able to do anything. Sheesh, this is turning out to be one big charlie-foxtrot......

After having the same issues ordering on line, I called the 800-CAL-DEAD number for help. When i tried to order the Winterland 1977 shows the operater asked me if i wanted to order winter and what was it. After being put on hold a few minutes i gave up. When i got home from work i just re entered all my info after reading the comments.. Miss the days when 800-CAL-DEAD was located in Iowa.

SunshineDel - Well, I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with Customer Service, they can’t help either! I can’t order anything from them without creating a new account. It seams that the account that I have been using for the last 20 years no longer exist. Yes, they do have a major problem! If they can fix it, I will continue support the Dead, if not, I will just have to be happy with what I can get from the net. I really do hope that they can fix this problem.

1. This site launched in May 2007. Accounts stored on previous versions of Dead.net were not copied over.
2. If you've set up an account in the Store and/or ordered from the site since then, that account info should have moved over to the new site this week.
3. If you haven't ordered and/or set up an account since May 2007, go ahead and set up a new account because we do not have that info.

marye, I have purchased almost everything that has been put out since Dicks Picks #1. Having ordered many items since May of 2007, why are so many issues happening now?? No need to be a squeaky wheel but there is a pattern happening. Also why do we need to speak up when we are trying to send revenue to whoever is in charge of taking the orders??? Seems it should be reversed. Someone is losing money, and for me its only $$$99.00

Maybe a little cheaper because you're not getting any of the packaging. Normally when these box sets come out I go haves with a buddy. And I just burn myself an mp3 disc of all the music and let him take the box. I've been thinking the dead could make more of these live releases available electronically. I want to second the request for the 1980 Radio City run in a box set. I was able to see two of those shows, and they were memorable. Perhaps not the best Dead run, but one full of uinque music (especially the acoustic sets). However, with 7 shows, that'd be roughly 21 CDs, and at the price of the 77 set, way too expensive. If the price pre disc were lower, runs like that would make great sets.
