Boxed and Ready to Go!
Sound the imperial trumpets! Bang the drum! Pop that champagne! Another Grateful Dead box set is comin’ your way! Yes, in the grand tradition of the beloved Fillmore West 1969 and Winterland 1973 boxes, comes Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings, a 9-CD box set that is sure to knock your tie-dyed socks off.
At this point, we probably don’t need to hype you on the glories of ’77 Dead. It was a magical time for the band, which was reinvigorated by a plethora of great new material—“Terrapin,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Passenger,” “Fire on the Mountain”—and really hitting its stride again following the October ’74 to June ’76 performing hiatus. The group spent much of the first three months of 1977 recording their Terrapin Station album with producer Keith Olsen, and Garcia also managed to find time to complete the much-anticipated Grateful Dead movie (which opened June 1, 1977). The third week of April, the band embarked on what most Dead Heads agree was one of the greatest tours ever: 26 concerts in the East and Midwest in a little over a month—an awesome stretch that produced so many great shows, a few of them already released in the Dick’s Picks series and subsequently (and more, no doubt, destined to come out down the road.)
So when the Dead returned to San Francisco’s Winterland for shows on June 7, 8, 9, they were pumped up and feeling good! They treated their hometown fans to three superb concerts that included excellent versions of much of their current repertoire, from the new combo of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain,” to a truly colossal, more than 30-minute “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower,” “Saint Stephen,” “Terrapin,” “Good Lovin’,” “Not Fade Away,” “The Other One”… too many favorites to mention (you can see the complete song lists here). Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings contains every note recorded from the three shows, more than nine hours of prime Dead, all taken from the master analog tapes, restored using the Plangent Processes, and mastered in HDCD by that inimitable sonic tweakster, Jeffrey Norman.
The nine discs are packaged in a beautifully designed box that includes artwork by Emek (you loved his crazy Winterland ’73 phantasmagoria); a 28-page booklet featuring a wonderful and illuminating new essay by Rolling Stone senior music editor David Fricke (who dubs this a “box of paradise and circus… six complete sets of inspired risk and collective explosion”); lots of great Winterland action shots by noted GD shutterbugs Ed Perlstein and Bruce Polonsky; and a couple of little pieces of period memorabilia we won’t reveal here.

I can't say for sure, but I suspect it's like a lot of online ordering sites where if you HAVE a coupon you can enter that info. But if you have no coupon and then click Apply, nothing is likely to happen because there is no coupon to apply. At least, that's my guess based on what I've experienced elsewhere. I don't know if we're going to have coupons, but I do know, for example, that we sell gift cards and the like, so a similar mechanism would probably apply.

Another '77 compilation. I'm shocked!! Can we please get off 1977, please?? Enough already. How about a box set commemorating Pig? Or, anything from the 80's at all. More Europe stuff would be great. 1977 has been played out, and so has Winterland. Between several complilations, movies, etc. we get it. Winterland was a great venue, but there are 100's others that deserve a little exposure too. As others have stated, it would also be great if we could get EVERYTHING as a download. It's cheaper, and less wasteful. Plus, no shipping hassles for heads overseas. I'm not trying to rain on everybody's parade, but I'm just not on 77's nuts as much as everyone else I guess. Apparently, it sells though, so...

Some Europe 72 perhaps? Clearly not the entire run - though if the Dead took a hint from classical music labels, they _can_ release big boxes and still make money - but at least a selection of the best, say, half-dozen shows?

I've read somewhere that the EU is trying to get other countries to collect taxes for them. I don't know on what legal basis they are doing this, but apparently the tax thing has something to do with this. I'm interested to know a) why it's being charged, and b) how it's being refunded. In other words, is there an obligation to collect tax (which seems ridiculous), and, if not, why is it being charged in the first place.
Just thinking out loud here, but what if you put a bogus VAT number in the form? Is it actually verifying that the number is correct?

Me thinks I should have read all these posts first, and then I would I have realised I'm not alone in my account having gone MIA, and my attempted order refused at the processing stage.

Kirkmc, What you say about the EU try to get other people to do their dirty work for them, sorry, I meant collect taxes for them, is new to me. Whilst it is eminently possible, it seems unlikely. I only know the way things work here in Holland. If I order something from outside the EU I will typically have to pay customs on orders with a value exceeding about 50 Euros (less than that and it probably isn't worth their time). When the postman delivers such a package, before I receive it I am presented with an invoice from customs which lists 2 charges. The first is import duty and the second is VAT. Together these come to about 35% of the stated cost of the goods (and postage!). The customs check all packages that enter the country from outside the EU and levy these duties and taxes accordingly. One has to assume that this is a simpler and cheaper system than paying tax to the seller anywhere in the world outside the EU and then getting it transferred to the relevant authority in any one of the EU countries. That said, does anyone know a government department that opts for the cheapest and most efficient methods? I now feel obliged to mention the good old Grateful Dead as this is their site: As '77 was a good year I am eagerly awaiting this box which will hopefully be worth all the ordering hassles, anxious waiting, import duty, VAT, obscure US-levied taxes, refunds of obscure US-levied taxes, glue issues, green (= cheap 'n' nasty) packaging, availability of bonus discs and all the other traumas currently associated with getting ones hands on the goods. And I still keep coming back for more.

It would be nice if there were a customer reward system of sorts. Don't get me wrong, the music IS the reward, I know, but still...I'm sure some of us lay down our money at every release, and a little nod in the way of savings would be a nice touch.

I'm lucky here in France: we hardly ever get taxed on imports. Only big packages get stopped by customs. In 25 years living in France, it's happened maybe three times.

kirkmc, Thanks for posting that link. This seems to have more to do with the problem that governments have struggled with for years - how to tax (legally purchased) digital downloads. That would explain the appearance of the VAT ID thang that comes up during the ordering process - presumably only customers from within the EU (or outside the US) get to see this. If you are a company then you would have a VAT ID and be able to claim the VAT back, if you are an individual, the you would just have to grin and bear it. As this should only apply to downloads, then the tax paid on physical products (I paid $4,28 for the Winterland '77 box) should be refunded at some stage - as Marye seems to think will occur. When the package arrives at your friendly local customs office, then they will levy the VAT etc. Only time will tell if the is the way things will go in the future. Oh, and for our American readers who are quite possibly mystified by this whole subject - VAT = Value Added Tax (Sales tax to you) - is that clearer now?

I've wanted to see 6/9/77 released for years and have also thought the June run would make a solid box set so I am pleased to see that come true. Sure, 1977 has been overly done. It's easy to do since that year had so many great shows. And, yes, it would be awesome to get something that doesn't already circulate in great audio instead but these shows are incredible so it's understandable. And (again) the 80s get thrown under the bus until another day, maybe. Even after all of that, this is still a wonderful pick.
I just find it odd that this warehouse move would happen at the same time as a box set is offered. Considering the problems the Store has had in the past, it seems like flirting with disaster and sure enough a problem or two has emerged. I also had to re-register in order to purchase anything from the Store. Whatever, it's not a big major deal and I don't want to be negative here. It's just perplexing, a real head scratcher. I just want to point out that in the future management should make sure all the ducks are in a row before letting the patrons in through the doors.
Anyway, Marye, keep up the good work. You have to deal with us and you do it well.
If you were not here there's no telling what it would be like for folks to get their issues resolved.

Love the chance to sample the music before you buy it. Listening to the "Listening Party" I got more than just the standard 30 seconds of preview that you get when you listen to something that you might buy on iTunes or Amazon. You get a whole bunch of material, starting with a nice Jack Straw and a jammin Samson. Not sure how much music they're sharing but, you have to hand it to dead.net for their creativity and generosity.

Three complete shows, I will definitely buy this. Yes there are a lot of releases from '77 but it was a great year. Personally, I'd prefer more (even more) releases from '73/'74 but I enjoy '77 too.I remember getting these shows on cassette years ago and I think I was a little underwhelmed at the time. Maybe I was comparing the shows to 5-7, 5-8 and 5-9 or maybe I'm thinking of the December Winterland shows from that year--the memory is a little hazy.
What's funny is I had the same reaction to the '73 Winterland box set. I sought out one of those shows (on cassette) because of the Playin/UJB/Morning Dew/UJB/Playin and thought it didn't sound quite spontaneous enough. I had a lot of tapes so I guess the more Dead you have the pickier you become.
Anyway, that box turned out to be the best CD purchase I've ever made and I'm guessing this next box will be more of the same.
A couple packaging issues:
I really hope the CDs are better protected in this box than in other recent releases. The cardboard sleeves are totally unacceptable.
The artwork of the last box was very nice and this one looks nice too, but I'd rather pay less and get "roadtrips" caliber artwork. Money is tight and the music is more important than the extras.
As for future releases, more '73 and '74 complete shows (please don't chop them up).
I agree, though, that a complete show from the '80s is due. There were a ton of hot shows at MSG; how about releasing that smoking show, I think it was '87, with the hot second set Shakedown and the Good Lovin'>LaBamba>Good Lovin'?

6/9/77 is a personal favorite, so I ordered this happily.
But we've seen too many of the few releases per year go to '77 material.
Berkeley 6/85 or 7/82 runs would make GREAT releases (boxed, not Road Tripped), THE EGYPT BOX SHOULD HAPPEN, an Orpheum 7/76 box would ROCK!, a 10/81 Europe box w/Melkweg and Barcelona 10/19 material would be Wunderbar, and then there's so much more that hasn't been touched on in the 80s and 90s.
So no more 77 please!
And how about getting around to releasing 2/26/77 or a 2-disc reduction of 11/4/77 with that crazed Truckin...
We want everything! NOW! At a good price, too!

Ah, memories!
June 7, 1977 - had the last final of my senior year at Stanford that day, then headed to Winterland for Night 1. Afterwards, we congregated at someone's house in E. Palo Alto, where we partied and (what else?) listened to bootleg Dead tapes all night long. Home for a few hours' sleep, then back to Winterland for Night 2. No all-night party that night, allowing enough rest to prepare for Night 3 on Thursday.
Somewhere along the way, it occurred to me that this wasn't 3 concerts; it was one 3-day concert with some long breaks between sets. 2/23/74 is still my favorite single show of the ones I saw, but June 1977 was the best run. I'm a sucker for CDs of shows I went to, and these were great ones.
Never had such a good time in my life before. I'd like to have it one time more.

Wonderful selection, just inspired playing, 77 was the year I became "aware" and it was a smoking year. Yes, complete shows, yes yes yes.That said, can anyone tell me how much these tickets cost to see these shows? 6.00$? 5.00? per ticket? I can't remember and don't have my stub infront of me.

Ever since this last tour, the cost just keep on going up. First 100.00 per ticket to see the guys in 09. Now, 100.00 for re-recorded music. I have copies of these shows from the soundboard. They are excellent, but not worth 100.00 more. How much does Rhino expect to make from the vault? How do all you heads afford these? Would love to have a remaster copy, but, I need to eat too.

To concur with a prior post, if you have trouble logging into your account with your username, try your full email address -- it also worked for me. Some of the account utility is missing -- you can't view your purchasing history, for example -- but it may get you in without having to create a new account.
I know the problem is being worked on (maybe it's already fixed), but I have concerns about what happens if you end up with two accounts linked to the same email address...which could happen if you create a new account.
Postage and weight
I have my doubts about the weight explanation. As a test, I went through most of the steps to buy a 2 disc set (Go To Nassau as it happens) and was presented with exactly the same postage costs: $100 or so for standard, $27 or so for rush postage. In other words, the costs are apparently pre-determined and weight doesn't seem to matter.
Suffice to say, I won't purchase these if I'm going to have to pay $USD27 postage (about $AUD30). Postage shouldn't cost a quarter of the price of the item, no matter how much it weighs. I recall paying around $5-10 postage for the Winterland set 18 months ago so there's surely no need for these costs.
I'd love to get this and I'm confident marye will fix it (if indeed it can be fixed). If the prices are fixed then sadly I won't be able to buy anything else through dead.net. By the way, did anyone notice most of the downloads have disappeared from the store?

Not A Complaint
I will be buying this, so this is more of a question than a complaint.
Why is this priced at $100? Seems that 20-25 per show has historically been the range, so this should be 60-75.
Also, in my mind, setting the price at $60 per set would yield a greater gross profit, as they would likely double the number of purchasers. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that so many people simply get free copies from friends, or other sources.

Roland Bruynesteyn - I agree that a Dutch '72 box would be nice. I have the Rotterdam show on CD and it is good. Maybe you can answer a question for me - where did the Dead play in Rotterdam? It sounds like a no-brainer, but having lived close to Rotterdam for the last 25 years, I have become aware of the fact that there is no Rotterdam Civic Hall (where the show is universally listed as having taken place). Friends who have lived in Rotterdam all their lives claim that there has never been a Rotterdam Civic Hall. So where did they play? De Doelen? Folks want to know! I hope you can enlighten me on this. After years of buying CDs, Shows, Shirts, Boxsets, and all kinds of stuff from The Grateful Dead Store, and paying them with my personal checks, all of which cleared with no hassels, I have now been informed that they will no longer take my checks, and no money orders either. It is credit cards only or your're shit out of luck. And to top it all off, the nice customer service representitive (I'm not blaming him, he's just another working stiff) was talking to me from his nice cubicle in FREAKING INDIA!!!! The freaking corporate ass wipes have shipped the whole Dead.net store out of the USA, probably canning several American workers in the process. I'm wondering if when you get your package of Disks from now on the little label will say "Made In China?" No, I don't have a credit card and I'm not about to pay some bank for the privilege to use my own money. I am sorely disappointed in the direction Dead.net has gone, Phil, Bob, Bill and Mickey have just shuffeled off the archives to Rhino with promises of regular checks in the mail for the rest of their lives. I'll still get the box set but now I have to jump through a few hoops to do it.
If anyone reading my rant knows how to contact any of the boys, tell them that they screwed up, and Jerry would have probably smacked them for such a lame move.

So, Deadnet off to India, I just can't believe it, the Greatful Dead, one of the greatest Amerikan institutions,resourced to another country. What the hell is going on? Thank the stars we've got soundboard and FOB recordings, things will never be the same. What were they thinking? Is money everything? I didn't know Jerry, but, this seems wrong and against everything that these guys stood/stand for. Would Jerry have allowed this? Who made this decision? Does anybody care? I think corporate sell out whores is a little harsh, but, what would you call it? Hey, if I was working for these guys, I'd be thinkin, am I next? What does Grateful Dead look like in Hindu?Just wonderin' Do they have dead cover bands in India? I, personally, have never met a Hindu Dead Head, do they exist? I guess so, we are everyweir. :)

Although I agree with most of your rant, I do find it interesting that people still think they know how Jerry would react if he were still alive today. I think it is too easy to view Jerry as he was and think that he would remain true to all his values, while his bandmates have sold out. I suppose it is comforting and something to hang on to. However, considering who he married and the realities of today, I doubt it. I once corresponded with David Gans (best wishes on your recovery!) about this and he knew Jerry better than a lot of people and he expressed the same view.

I dont really care if customer support is in India. It is called globalisation. Good or bad thats how it is. Problem is that customer service is not working at all. They are almost impossible to reach and if you do they dont understand you. And if they understand they have no idea what is lets say a Winterland box. I dont understand why GD commerse is paying them for their so called service. I have always got help with my order issues from Marye and only from her. So I hope they are paying to her something also.

Is money everything?
Of course it is for a company or corporation and to think otherwise is a bit naive and, dare I say it, a bit 1960's. In this case there is a product which is sold to make money to keep the company alive and make a profit. It has very little or nothing to do with the band "The Grateful Dead". Now it is the brand "The Grateful Dead" which is used to help sell the product. That customer service has been outsourced to India is a reflection of labour prices around the world. Maybe this is a recent development in the US but for years now most people in Europe have been getting used to the fact that most call centres are in India. Certainly people in America should have noticed that manufacturing has largely been shifted to countries where people work longer hours for less money than in the US. Please don't get the idea that I am in favour of this globalization, but it is a fact of life that I am resigned to. I am also unprepared to play the role of burning martyr by boycotting all products from all companies who outsource outside their home countries. If I did that, I would never buy anything again. Times change, but do not get better in my humble opinion. Get on with it.

After a long deliberation with all the voices in my head, and going over all the shows I've collected during the past several years, I realized that I already have all three nights of the Winterland June 77 run, two soundboards, and one matrix, and the complete show of the bonus disk as an aud (part 5 of the 77 project). So now I question myself should I continue and purchase the box set as an upgrade? Is it really worth $100.00 bucks? In our 21st century post Yuppie, gotta get them all Pokemon quasi-kewl Orwellian society, I think that restraint is the better solution. GD Merchandise can go it's merry way, and I'll buy some things from time to time, but the days where I'd buy everything that came down the pike are over. The Winterland 77 Box set looks sweet, but the cost for a slight upgrade is prohibitive, and I never read those silly little books they package them with. My focus has always been the music, I love the music, and I will continue to listen, trade, d/l, and occasionally purchase the music from Grateful Dead, Ratdog, Phil, Mickey, Bobby, DSO, NRPS, et al, 'casue that's what I do.
Unkel Sam really lightened my spirit up with the vision of an all Indian Hindu Dead Cover Band, jamming away on sitars, to Uncle Raj's Band.... Me and my uncle went riding down, South New Deli, West Punjab bound.....
