Yes, in the grand tradition of the beloved Fillmore West 1969 and Winterland 1973 boxes, comes Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings, a 9-CD box set that is sure to knock your tie-dyed socks off.

    At this point, we probably don’t need to hype you on the glories of ’77 Dead. It was a magical time for the band, which was reinvigorated by a plethora of great new material—“Terrapin,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Passenger,” “Fire on the Mountain”—and really hitting its stride again following the October ’74 to June ’76 performing hiatus. The group spent much of the first three months of 1977 recording their Terrapin Station album with producer Keith Olsen, and Garcia also managed to find time to complete the much-anticipated Grateful Dead movie (which opened June 1, 1977). The third week of April, the band embarked on what most Dead Heads agree was one of the greatest tours ever: 26 concerts in the East and Midwest in a little over a month—an awesome stretch that produced so many great shows, a few of them already released in the Dick’s Picks series and subsequently (and more, no doubt, destined to come out down the road.)

    So when the Dead returned to San Francisco’s Winterland for shows on June 7, 8, 9, they were pumped up and feeling good! They treated their hometown fans to three superb concerts that included excellent versions of much of their current repertoire, from the new combo of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain,” to a truly colossal, more than 30-minute “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower,” “Saint Stephen,” “Terrapin,” “Good Lovin’,” “Not Fade Away,” “The Other One”… too many favorites to mention (you can see the complete song lists here). Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings contains every note recorded from the three shows, more than nine hours of prime Dead, all taken from the master analog tapes, restored using the Plangent Processes, and mastered in HDCD by that inimitable sonic tweakster, Jeffrey Norman.

    Wow! This is exactly the sort of thing we're after! Please, please, please sort out your shipping. $103 standard shipping to Australia ??? That just can't be right now can it. Well, in any case, I've signed up for "Rush" shipping at $27.39 - seemed like a no-brainer - shipped in half the time at a third of the cost of "standard". You guys have been smoking the packing tape again haven't you.

I hate to complain, but I have to echo the comments re: too much 1977. So very many 1977 shows have been released on Dick's Picks and the official releases, including another one this year. I would rather they open the vault with some underrepresented years/tours. I understand that in the annals of GD lore, the spring 1977 tour was one of, if not THE, best, but there are so many tours that have not seen the light of day. Personally, I wish they would spend more time on releasing DVD shows-- specifically Pigpen era Dead (what is happening with the video from the Festival Express) and there has to be tons of Brent-era video that can be released. I think it is high time they remaster and re-release Downhill From Here with all the Alpine 1989 sets in a box. That I would gladly purchase-- and anything Pigpen. Really, anything Pigpen on video would be incredible! But, I just cannot purchase anymore 1977. Perhaps I will change my mind and get this one, but am a bit 1977ed out. Sometimes it seems that the vault consists of giant 1973 and 1977 sections and a small spot for the rest of the GD's live history.

I would be down with a Best of Pigpen box that includes a DVD with footage. There should be enough video out there from the 1967-72 era to create one DVD of Pigpen-- there is extant footage of Muddy Waters from the 1950s! Based upon Festival Express' inclusion of "Easy Wind" and "Hard to Handle," there is a lot of footage from those shows alone. I suppose the Festival Express guys own the rights to that footage, however. See what you can do Rhino. Thanks.

I absolutely concur that a Pigpen DVD would be an essential addition to any Dead collection.I think he has been overshadowed for too long in terms of releases. I would call the DVD "Boar Hog's Eye" and it should span '66 to '72, with a 4 CD release along with it.

With a half-dozen Lovelights, a few Hard to Handles, some Midnight Hours... Hog heaven? It's true that the Dead have pretty much neglected Pigpen's finest in their releases. I know he went a long time ago, but he was pretty much the center of the band in the early days. And, man, could he throw down when the band got funky.

I know that the Dead secured the rights to the Festival Express audio and video, that's how the producers were allowed to include the Dead in that amazing film. I suggested that they do that as a box set, in an earlier rant, because its an underepresented time in official releases (summer/fall of 70). Let's do a Pigpen/Dead 60'-70's box set. You could do those kick butt shows from the Fillmore Auditorium in July 66, Winterland 3/18/67 is in the vault I bet, there has to be a smokin' 1968 jam we have yet to hear, anything pretty much from 1969 is cool (Monterey 1969 is great), 2/11/70 from the Fillmore East, 9/20/70? Lets get creative, if a song or 2 is missing or spliced I think we can live with it. David, let's get creative. Enough of the 1977, or put out Cornell finally, or that rockin' fall tour with all the bust outs (Casey Jones, Dire Wolf, Dupress, Truckin...). Oh that's right, you butchered those shows on that earlier Road Trips. Skip 77 for a year or two PLEASE. I am waiting for a cheap copy on Amazon. I bet I can pick one up for $50 or less in about two months. Don't need the bonus disc, I have plenty of that stuff already. The 6-disc Dick's Picks is just as rockin as this set and its in HCDC and Jeffrey Norman did the mastering, and its only like $35.00. Buy that! By the way, great choice on the latest Road Trips...I love it!!! I needed that bonus disc! Still waiting for that Greek '85 run! That I would buy in an instant, if my buddy doesn't get me copies first. He just aquired the whole run on CD from a friend in CT.

I've tried for the better part of a week to place an international order, but the very last step, after shipping options and CC info, fails. After thinking for awhile, it regrets being unable to process my order and offers me a chance to go back and try again (as if that would help!). No helpful hints at all.I've tried different credit cards, rush and standard, not mixing pre-orders with other stuff, nothing makes the slightest bit of difference. After listening to the latest two songs on the Listening Party, I sure hope my order will be sent. I have the email confirmation and printed out the order information page after my order was placed.Like others, my order does not appear in my customer account. I ordered early (9/14), before all the problems were reported. How can anyone verify their order is on record and will ship?

Marye - I hope you see and read this. You are the only shining light of customer service at dead.net, and maybe you can pass it along to the powers to be The problem with Rhino now selling the Dead's music is the customer service (other than marye who is fantasic): The powers to be have farmed out the CAL-DEAD customer service to what I am guessing is India. I have talked to 4 people there to what was been a dreadful experience. Received 4 different answers to the same question - and I still beleive that I do not have an accurate answer to my question. I placed a pre-order for the new Winterland 77 Box Set. When I 1st tried to purchase the item the site froze up on me. So I closed out of the site and re-tried later in the evening and it went through, and I also received an e-mail confirmation to the 2nd order. To be safe I called customer service and spoke with a person who struggled to understand me and I him, to confirm the order only went through once. From my understanding it only went through once. I was then looking at my bank account on-line and it appeared as if my checking account was "pinged" twice by dead.net and not once on two seperate dates (the money has not been taken out yet only but money was placed on"hold" twice). I called the CAL-DEAD number again where a person who again was difficult to understand informed me he showed one "hold" that was successful and another hold on his end that was "pending" - he informed me he would research it and get back to me in 24 hours, 24 Hours came and went and no call - I then called the CAL-DEAD number again and was told by a woman who again was hard to understand to give them another 24 hours to get back to me. Again 24 hours went by and I did not get a call back, so again I called them, I finally got someone who researched further - but again was very difficult to understand, she said she only saw one order - nothing has changed at my bank. I still believe I will get charged twice and receive two copies of these unbelievable set but all I want or need is one, and I am sure the return process my not be very smooth based on my purchase experience. I have never had these types of problems when the customer service was local and owned by the Dead themselves, I have purchased almost every release from the Dead right here on the website but If continue to go through this type of expereince I will find somewhere else to spend my hard earned money. I would love it if this message somehow found it's was to Bobby, Phil, Bill, and Mickey.

Marye, It's nice that you guys are "upgrading" the shipping at the lower, correct cost, but I'd really reather have mine sent by USPS. As others have pointed out here, UPS has very high customs presentation charges (one person said EUR 16, or around $25), and that would be avoided with USPS shipping. I don't care about getting it a couple of days early, but I do care about getting hit with abusive fees from UPS.

Very sorry to bring this up, but the India thing has been around as far back as the Road Trips Vol. 2 No. 2. I called customer service about not receiving the bonus disc and a woman with an Indian sounding accent had no idea what a bonus disc was. Fortunately Marye handled this for me and I received the bonus disc. The last Road trips, Vol. 2 No. 4 seemed to have next to no problems - at least from the responses on the forum. I actually thought they had everything figured out. Once things seemed to be going well, the web site is changed. Fortunately Marye is still available.

For those outside the US who cannot complete orders, check that the name you enter is identical in all respects to what appears on your credit card. They seem to have a fussier system now. After several ejected orders I found that I had to add Mr to my name, as my credit card says 'Mr Badger' and not just 'Badger'. Never happened that way before. Maybe this would help someone who is struggling out there.

that in this day and age there are so many problems with Rhino when they are taking the money out of our pockets. Don't these fools understand that there are already alternative ways for us to get the music. All they are doing is FORCING us to do so. Don't they see that they MUST make it easy and painless for us to shell out $100 bucks for music most of us already have in one form or another and don't need? My view is that they understand, but for whatever reason they don't care. I think Rhino has already decided that they will never make money with the Dead catalogue and are trying to get what they can with crappy service, even though the product is well-done. As far as the boys getting wind of this. Get real. They sold out to these morons and probably don't care anymore themselves. Marye, you are the sole shining light in this whole affair. I have placed many orders with the store over the last years. I always receive an e-mail confirming the order. The mail always states that I will receive e-mail confirmation when my order ships. Sometines I get that confirmation mail, sometimes I don't. What I have always received is the order - complete and intact - which is the main thing, of course. The confirmation mail has always been a hit-and-miss affair as far as I am concerned. This time around I have not yet received confirmation, neither has my credit card been charged, but I wasn't expecting anything to happen yet. For me, maybe because I live across the pond, things don't usually happen until a day or two before the given date - Oct. 1 in this case. Still almost a week to go for me in my experience. It is also normal for folks in the US to receive their order (with or without shipping confirmation) before I see any indications that shipping has occurred. Nothing for me to worry about - yet. P.S. At the store, I cannot find the link to the Grateful Dead Stress Relief Tablets. You know, those little blue pills with the lightning bolt on 'em! A certain best-seller.

Upon arriving home my box set was awaiting me ... so once again I am a happy dead head. Wish there was more transparency in the order process so one could track ones order better with less tension. Hope I won't get fucked by the Grateful Dead Store this time like with the latest Road Trips release. When receiving the latest Road Trips along with the Jerry Garcia Band release (no postage? well, only 1/3 discount of the postage for us Europeans). So I paid about $45.00 for that package altogether but the Grateful Dead Store had marked the package with a value of $60.00, so that was the amount the Swedish Customs used to calculate how much taxes I had to pay. And the not so funny part is this: If the Dead Store had marked that package with the correct amount, it would probably have gone through the Swedish Customs without me having to pay an extra $25.00 for it. I have written the Grateful Dead Store about it but haven't got any reply yet ... no excuses of any kind. So what amount will they mark this new box with?? I do hope it will not be more than $112.00, because that's what I have payed. Usually when ordering, one can actually see if the bonus disc is included. But not with latest Road Trips release and not with this Winterland-box, though I got the Road Trips bonus disc. Will I get the bonus disc for Winterland or is too late for that? I also have to say I agree with everyone who thinks the price asked for these boxes is way too much. I do love the artwork for the boxes (I missed out the first one - the Live/Dead shows) but the quality of the disc's is poor. And the same goes for the Road Trips releases. And the latest Jerry Garca Band release. I have had some thoughts about this matter but I can only think of three explanations: 1. Rhino wants to screw us all a lot. 2. The people at Rhino thinks manufacturing physical records cost too much and will this way make sure nobody misses the message: It will all be downloads in a very near future. 3. Rhino don't give a shit. They make cheap records and sell them high priced because they know we will by almost anything with the Grateful Dead and related. I have been thinking about why the Dead once upon a time launched their own record company. I've read it was because they thought Warner Bros. released poorly manufacured vinyl records. And now it is happening again ... (I guess the Dead had other issues as well making them launch Grateful Dead Records.) Well, this is my thoughts on these things. You are correct - twice. First point regarding the declared value of the latest Road Trips / Garcia package. I also paid $45 for the 2 together inc. postage. When it arrived I noticed that the value stated on the customs declaration was $60. Fortunately the Dutch customs either didn't notice or chose not to act because I didn't have to pay any import duty and VAT on the package. Usually I have to pay on anything with a value above $50. Because there were no consequences, I didn't bother to do anything about it, but it did concern me that the stated value had nothing whatsoever to do with the real value. My experience was the same as yours - except that customs smiled on me that day, but not on you. Second point regarding the bonus disc with this "Winterland '77" box. I assume that I will get the bonus disc because I ordered very early, but in this case there has never been any mention of the bonus disc, not whilst ordering and also not on the confirmation mail that I received. In the past this has always been clearly stated. In this regard also my experience has been the same as yours. These may seem like small points, but when one adds up all the small (and large) problems that occur when ordering, it results in a thoroughly horrible experience - and that is not how it should be. When a new product appears in a web store, ones first reaction should be "Oh wow, great" but here the reaction is "Uh, fine, but do I really want to go through all this yet again". Sad, Rhino, just plain sad.

Because of dental bills I wasn't able to get the first CD-box, that one with the Live/Dead shows when it was released. I figured I could get it later and true, I can. Today though it has a pricetag that says about $2.500 if still sealed and $1.000 if used. Of course the various bonus discs from the last ten years probably aren't that expensive, but I'm sure some of them cost a lot ... As some of us were aware, Rhino laid off between 30 & 40 staffers (but thankfully not Marye) a few days ago. It seems that Rhino will evolve into an entity that "handles Warner Music Group's global digital catalog initiatives, film, TV, vidgame and commercial licensing, and name and likeness representation for legendary artists." whatever that means! Personally I would be satisfied if Rhino evolved into an entity that "functions and performs in a manner somewhat similar to a normal commercial enterprise". Sarcasm intended. Further: "The Warner unit has been trying to change with the times, placing more emphasis on digital-only offerings and name-and-likeness pacts, such as those made with the Grateful Dead." Name-and-likeness pacts or representation. WTF. What is that in plain English.

OK, so I am still unable to place my order. Is anyone else still having this problem. Marye was very helpful in taking my info and passing it along and I have also contacted the folks at the order problems email link posted at various points on this thread. I got a message from them saying they would look into it and get right back to me but that was a few days a go and still no response. I even called customer service who was not able to take my order. Am I gonna miss out on the bonus disc even though I have been trying to order this thing for a couple weeks now? It just seems kind of crazy that they can't figure out how to process my order. I'm trying not to be negative since there seems to plenty of that to go around....I faithfully buy pretty much all of the music that gets released here, but is it really that hard to get them to take my 100 bucks? If anyone has had the issue of the "order not being able to be processed" at the end of their order and you figured out a way around it can you let me know? Thanks in advance for any help and sorry to be a downer. I'm not complaining, just trying to figure out a way to get this box, which looks awesome! I'm glad some folks are getting them already...and a little jealous ;) Geoff

The day Rhino will stop manufacture physical records I will not start saving my money - I will probably start collecting the nicest Dead bootlegs instead .. or have more money leftover to purchase all those other records I don't have but which I want to have, possibly used then. Apart from that I'm now a premium subscriber to a legal Swedish listening site. For this I pay 99 SEK (about $14.00) a month and get to listen to tens of thousands of records without having to be disturbed by commercials. Among the records available are all 36 volumes of Dick's Picks, all Grateful Dead records released between 1967 and 1990, both remastered and not, except Steal Your Face. Further on they have all other records by the Dead except the Live/Dead shows box, Three From The Vault, Terrapin Limited, the View From The Vault series and the Road Trips series. They have, though, all the 13 volumes of the Download Only series. It is possible to be a free listener but only if someone who is subscribing send a person an invite. I have only one invite available for the moment. On the other hand all free listeners have to keep up with commersials every 20 minutes or so, even though they don't appear in the middle of a song. Certain bands and artists are not represented, like Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Phish and many others. Not yet anyway. I guess this new Winterland box will be available pretty soon on that listening site but I want it anyway. I'm listening to records there and if I like them enough I try to purchase them. Well, I got my order today, one pure jerry, and one winterland box set, except, there was NO box set, just a pure jerry. Oh brother. Thanks Marye for letting us know about the orderproblems@dead.net email contact, I have sent them a polite inquiry (which took some restraint :). I'm sure they'll take care of all of us eventually, but come on now, it's just buying cd's off the internet, not health care. Thanks, Mark.

I just receied my order, and refused it. Here's what I just wrote in an email to "orderproblems". You've made a fine mess of this. First was the problem with shipping prices, then you decided to ship everything to foreign countries via UPS by default. The problem is that UPS has onerous costs for "presenting" packages to customs. I just refused my order, because the total cost for customs was EUR 40, or about $60. (Assuming that VAT here is 19.6%, the correct amount would be about EUR 13.) If you had sent it by USPS, I would have had little or no customs cost. So, I have refused the order, and I expect you to refund my purchase price. If you want to send it again by USPS, I would be happy to order again. If not, I'll just torrent the music. You've given us so many hassles with this set that I'm not sure I really want to order from you again. It's hard to think of how you could have made this order process any worse.

Well, you have my sympathy. If this box arrive here in Sweden and the Swedish Customs want to charge me an extra $60.00, I've decided to refuse my package as well. And I will explain to Rhino there have been so many problematic issues since they took over the Dead Store, that I will probably also torrent their music from now on. AND MIND YOU, I will say, until now I have torrented about TWO CD-R's of music, altogether, since Napster was launched some ten years ago. Because officially I'm working politically against illegal down loadings, and that's a fact ... But if Rhino screw me once more, I may concider downloading their stuff, even though it hurts me, the band members of the Dead and their relatives will not get royalty money from me in the future.
