    Boxed and Ready to Go!

Sound the imperial trumpets! Bang the drum! Pop that champagne! Another Grateful Dead box set is comin’ your way! Yes, in the grand tradition of the beloved Fillmore West 1969 and Winterland 1973 boxes, comes Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings, a 9-CD box set that is sure to knock your tie-dyed socks off.

At this point, we probably don’t need to hype you on the glories of ’77 Dead. It was a magical time for the band, which was reinvigorated by a plethora of great new material—“Terrapin,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Passenger,” “Fire on the Mountain”—and really hitting its stride again following the October ’74 to June ’76 performing hiatus. The group spent much of the first three months of 1977 recording their Terrapin Station album with producer Keith Olsen, and Garcia also managed to find time to complete the much-anticipated Grateful Dead movie (which opened June 1, 1977). The third week of April, the band embarked on what most Dead Heads agree was one of the greatest tours ever: 26 concerts in the East and Midwest in a little over a month—an awesome stretch that produced so many great shows, a few of them already released in the Dick’s Picks series and subsequently (and more, no doubt, destined to come out down the road.)

So when the Dead returned to San Francisco’s Winterland for shows on June 7, 8, 9, they were pumped up and feeling good! They treated their hometown fans to three superb concerts that included excellent versions of much of their current repertoire, from the new combo of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain,” to a truly colossal, more than 30-minute “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower,” “Saint Stephen,” “Terrapin,” “Good Lovin’,” “Not Fade Away,” “The Other One”… too many favorites to mention (you can see the complete song lists here). Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings contains every note recorded from the three shows, more than nine hours of prime Dead, all taken from the master analog tapes, restored using the Plangent Processes, and mastered in HDCD by that inimitable sonic tweakster, Jeffrey Norman.

The nine discs are packaged in a beautifully designed box that includes artwork by Emek (you loved his crazy Winterland ’73 phantasmagoria); a 28-page booklet featuring a wonderful and illuminating new essay by Rolling Stone senior music editor David Fricke (who dubs this a “box of paradise and circus… six complete sets of inspired risk and collective explosion”); lots of great Winterland action shots by noted GD shutterbugs Ed Perlstein and Bruce Polonsky; and a couple of little pieces of period memorabilia we won’t reveal here.

clicking here. We know you’re gonna dig it! And rest assured, there’s plenty more where this came from: We know you love the box sets; well, we do, too!

    Think '80s!
This is good stuff, I'm sure. However, how about the Greek 84 or 85, just to name two? Just a thought...

    Thanks, Marye
For the shipping calculated from the red pill, will our orders need to be placed again? Because if you chose fast shipping because it was cheaper, and it turns out that the blue pill gives you the correct USPS rates, I'm sure most of us would want the USPS rate, which will end up being the cheaper one.

    Good to hear
Hi marye. As usual you've gone above and beyond. "4. The international shipping charges being quoted are completely from outer space and have no relation to any known reality. We know this, we're working on it, stay tuned." = music to my ears. Frankly I'm still umming and ahhing about whether to get the set when I know I could wait and get it for half price in a year's time sans bonus disc (meaning the bonus disc is worth approximately 60 Australian dollars!) but thanks to you I'll at least have the option of a realistic international shipping price instead of the fanciful figures appearing at the moment. Thanks again for your efforts.

I just received a call from my credit card company. Someone has been charging stuff to my account. There were only two charges made this month on my card. One was for the Winterland set. The credit card co. said all the fraudulent charges were made soon after I placed my Winterland order. The fraudulent charges were all Internet orders not any physical store shopping. They are investigating and my card is canceled. My card has theft protection so I am covered. Not remotely pointing the finger at this store. Could have been someone phishing or spyware even though I have an up to date account with Norton's Internet Security and Anti-Virus that has this protection. I am now wondering how good is Norton's protection. Just warning everyone to please check their credit card accounts. Hopefully everyone's accounts are safe. Internet shopping has it's risks. Be careful eveyone and enjoy the Winterland set when it arrives. It sounds great.

To be fair, it's certainly not the connection between your web browser and the store; that's encrypted. What happens after, though, depends on how the merchant gets and stores the credit card numbers.

everybody can agreee on complete shows and that their continuity brings the dead to life--but in the interest of the music itself, no matter what song or set of songs we listen to in whatever circumstances we find ourselves in the transcendance is always there--we might as well go for we sure don't know what's coming next in the procession of the design of our lives--so let us feast with the dead

Allman: will watch out. Thanks. I wonder if someone at the Dead.net merchandise dept is a problematic employee? Hopefully not. But either way, I hope you notified Dead.net. As for me, I ordered this set for 6/9/77; I have a soundboard of that, but it is a few generations out, and would be good to get a fresh copy. It would be neat if someone did a matrix of the audience/soundboard of that show, as the audience has some excellent acoustics of the building, where the soundboard has the guts. Anyway, I am grateful for this release. 6/9/77 is a classic show. Greg SC

Am I supposed to place my order with no indication whatsoever whether I'll receive the bonus disc? BOGUS I'm afraid it's the end of the line for the business end of things, because I had the same difficulty placing an impulse order last time, and they haven't bothered to fix it. There's just not enough $ at stake for them. It's too bad, but what do you expect when you outsource the greatest customer service department on earth?

Just finishing listening to 6/8 now (listened to 6/9 second). Everything plays correctly and everything sounds great. I never received a shipping confirmation email. Other than that, I had a fine experience with the handling of this release. Great shows, great sound, great completeness. I got what I wanted and at a time when I have "extra" money. So I'm happy! I hope there will be a 3 Disc Selections release for the folks who couldn't spend all that money... Thanks! Seth

What is going on here, Same as many others here i just received my box set at home when UPS asked me to pay for some 55 USD for customs....... I already pay an extra price for international shipment and my order was in total 126 USD, toped with 55 USD, this is a set box at 180 USD!! What is going on here?? I never paid any custom charges in the past and i have ordered every single box set there is on Dead net! Now someone please do something. I already sent a PM to Marye as i know how supportive she is, but on the other end i talked to some people at Dead net customer service saying: "this has nothing to do with us"... type of story. This is not accpetable, as it is not even mentionned anywhere that we could be charge for some custom duties or anything. Sorry to disturb the party atmosphere for all of you enjoying this outstanding historical performance. Regards,

Well I have listened to everything apart from the Bonus disc and have no complaints. Everything is just about exactly perfect. The essay by David Fricke in the booklet claims that the second half of Set 2 of June 9 'may be the single greatest 60 minutes of live Dead ever' Hmmm. Hang on, in the booklet accompanying 'To Terrapin' Gary Lambert claims that 28 May 1977 could be 'the peak moment in Grateful Dead history'. Meanwhile in his essay Denis McNally claims that the Winterland '73 set is ' the best two track sound recordings you're likely ever hear' You don't need to sell it quite so hard to us guys..by the time we've read the booklet we have already bought it! lol

Mary, you stated a few pages back that "we think the problem with the confirmation emails is signficantly due to the fact that they're coming from a new server and apparently triggering spam filters at various sites". GD Rhino never sent out shipping confirmations prior to this current schemozzle either. The problem with the confirmation emails is most likely that they have never been sent. I still couldn't order online last week, so I rang the call centre. They could place an order by using some form of override. I guess Rhino's motto is "Never respond to a customer, never apologise, never follow up". Happy Trails

After reading many of the posts here over the past week or so, I became leery of the possible issues. I never received the email notification of the impending shipment, so i was a little surprised when I got them. But I think all the discs contain the proper tracks for the respective shows after popping them into my computer to peek at the track listings on iTunes. Just thought I'd share some good vibes, and wish good luck to those who have been less fortunate with their orders. I hope you all get it straightened out ASAP so you can enjoy the best part of being a Dead Head - the music!

So I'm still waiting to get some sort of reply from "customer service", wherever they are. They don't seem to answer e-mails, and I'm hesitant about trying to resolve this mess by telephone... I guess I have to contest the credit card charge, because it seems that customer service doesn't give a rat's ass about customers, or about service...

Spent 30 mn overthe phone with Dead net customer service today, nice people, polite, but hey no real solution to the problem... Cherry on the cake: when they put you on hold, the music they put on is not Even Grateful Dead music, really a tough call!! Anyway i have been trying to explain the situation, talked also to USP etc . What a mess, and in the meantime, i didn't get an order confirmation, then i got an email on refund etc.... I will keep everyone posted here because as a true loyal customer for many years if this mess end up with the bill for my self, i will do whatever it takes to get all customers aware of where they stand. regards to all and enjoy the music because this is what it's all about after all isn't it?!?

Mine arrived today - with everything included, also the bonus disc. Now I will settle down to listen to it, the delight of which will be somewhat diminished by the fact that I will also be wondering if each disc contains what it is supposed to. The downside is the cost. Now I guess you all love arithmatic, so try and follow this: $ 99.98 - 1 box $ 22.50 - UPS Rush shipping $ 4.28 - Tax on shipping @ 19% ----------- $126.76 $ 10.51 - Refund on shipping ----------- $116.25 $ 31.40 - Tax levied by customs here in Holland (21.47 Euro) $ 14.60 - UPS "Provision" (10.00 Euro) ---------- $162.25 - Total cost to me Plus point: Usually I have to pay import duty levied by customs. This time I did not. Minus point: I have not received a refund for the tax paid ($4.28) on the original shipping charge ($22.50). Even worse, when I got the refund on the original shipping charge, I did not get a refund on the tax paid on that part of the shipping charge that was refunded (19% of $22.50 = $2.00). I suppose I have to be grateful that I got the thing at all, but the basic tenet of shopping (including online shopping) is that it should be a pleasant experience. As usual, shopping on this site is anything but a pleasant experience. My mind is already beginning to turn to the subject of what problems will arise with the next release, while I should be anticipating with joy what the next release may be. Will it be some classic Pigpen? Enough said. Get your act together, Rhino, before it really is too late.

Bad math: refund on the tax paid on that part of the shipping charge that was refunded (19% of $22.50 = $2.00) of course should have read (19% of $ 10.51 = $2.00). Are we all still awake here?

Allman, I had the same problem as you did, illegal charges on my card. It occured on the last Road Trips release before the current one.The cc company noticed it right away and contacted me about it, then cancelled the charges and hopefully investigated it. It happened with a new cc, one I hadn't given out on the 'net except for here, so I knew immediately what site was involved. I advise anyone giving their card number out here to watch their future bills for fraudulent charges. I'm still awaiting a customer service reply to this UPS fiasco. I paid for overnight service, which is why UPS gets involved...however, at the time of ordering, customers aren't advised of the extra charges that result from that selection, which is misleading and irresponsible. $55 extra for something I already paid $99 + $15.23 shipping is outrageous, and there's NO way I'm paying it..I'll refuse the shipment before I put up with that kind of blackmail. Secondly, I paid for overnight shipping...according to UPS it was sent five day shipping, which isn't what i paid for. It also didn't arrive in the five days...it was supposed to be here on Friday so I STAYED HOME ALL DAY WAITING FOR IT, only to not have it come until this morning, when I couldn't be here. I was hoping for a reply from customer service about how to proceed with this UPS fiasco...I first called them about this last THURSDAY...but as of yet I haven't received a reply, other than being told the complaint was "escalated". Now here's the thing; if I, or anyone of you, refuse the package, Deadnet/Rhino/Seller might get charged the brokerage fees to receive it back....so it makes sense for them just to cover it this time, so buyers like me remain satisfied customers. I'm on hold right now with UPS to see if the brokerage fees are charged back to the seller/sender, if the receiver/buyer refuses the item....I'll report my findings as soon as I know.

I know someone local to me...Ontario Canada...who received their package today, standard shipping. While I'm happy for him, it's hard to justify me paying $55 in extra fees after paying $15.26 for overnight shipping, only to receive it the same day as someone who paid $6 shipping and no brokerage fees. This is a fiasco..the customer service hasn't been able to give me an answer, although they are very polite and Jonathon has been great in updating me on their "no answer from the accounts department" info...so I'm unable to say I'm satisfied with how this is being handled. I'm still awaiting a call from UPS to let me know if Deadnet/Rhino has to cover brokerage fees for returned items.....the agent didn't know and couldn't find out on the spot, so I'm to get a call back when they can find out. Here's hopin' many of you are enjoying the music hassle free... and for those of you with hassles, I hope they are sorted out quickly.

Musicalbeds, my credit card company is leaning towards my card number being stolen with this order from dead.net. Sorry to hear you were a victim also. They are investigating, but the way the charges popped up after my order, all signs point in this direction but nothing is certain. Until this person is caught, I couldn't agree more. Everyone monitor your credit card. Don't wait until the bill arrives. Check your card account by calling your service.

And just quickly ran through each disc to catch any 'mistakes' and I found none. But I did hear a blast of that big beefy bass that was shaking me and my friends at Winterland for those 3 daze in June '77. Will have to continue to 'spot check' but I am delighted to be able to take a aural 'trip' back in time and revisit how the Dead sounded as they were running through those new 'classics' for us all. This sounds tremendous, wonderful separation on each player & it all sounds so crisp. Will have to schedule me some serious ;o} listening time this week. The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

Yes, all good things come to those who wait. I just want to thank the crew who put this together, especially David and Jeffery. You guys rock! It looks like we are going to get these box sets about once per year and that is fine for me. I am a complete show person, and I don't need to go into that debate, other than saying that it is nice to get these. Even more so, complete runs like this are just fantastic and I am thrilled with this one. I have not even gotten close to giving this a good listen through, but I would have to say in my opinion, 6/7, and 6/8 are better shows than 6/9, but again, I will need some more time. On another note, 1977 being one of my and many other head's favorite years, it is really amazing to see how many complete (or mostly complete) shows have been released from this year: 4/30 (old download?), 5/19, 5/21, 5/22, 5/28, 6/7, 6/8, 6/9, 9/3, 11/5, 12/29. That plus all of the other shows I have downloaded gives me a ton of music from this year. I love this year for this band and this comes from a Dark Star freak, which, as we know, is gone from shows between 10/18/74 all the way up to 12/31/78. Finally, I do sympathize with everyone who has had shipping and/or payment issues. After the initial debacle of the site being screwed up, I got my order put in after a few days of attempts and it arrived very quickly. I was expecting it today and it came last Thursday. It was one hell of a nice surprise. I hope everyone can get their shipments/refunds and get down to listening to these shows. Rick Do or do not; there is no try.

Just curious, is there PA problems on Scarlet Begonias at the start of disc 2 (6/7)? I can hear the rest of the band playing but Jerry's voice is faded, there's a "tic" and his voice is back. Just curious. Never had a copy of this show so I don't know if it's on AUDs or other SBDs. These shows sound nice. Real nice. I realize that there have been lots of problems and I understand how frustrating that can be. I had a bad disc in the 73 box (which was never replaced though I got emails assuring me it would be). I had glue problems on the Egypt release and two of the Road Trips releases. But I'm still hopeful. If "they" (whoever they is) can get past these quality issues I think there's good times comin'.

Through the cold rain and snow today Winterland '77 had arrived. Just getting into it. Looks good, check out the photo p.19 of Bob looking a bit "Crazed" hehe. Digging Candyman from the first night now. Headed to Estimated(short)>He's Gone(long).I just thought a nice throw in for the next one could be a sticker of the box front modified Steal Your Face. I do like the pins though pretty cool pretty neat. Just a thought cuz "...you know better but I know him..." Hopefully have lots more time to dig this later with no issues(fingers crossed)...Good luck to those still waiting.

Well Maddoc, I wish i shared your hope for Deadnet.I have received a complete runaround regarding this cluster$#% of an order. I paid for overnight, it was shipped five day service, so Deadnet screwed up. Secondly, it was shipped via UPS who were supposed to deliver it Friday..five day service...and didn't, so they screwed up. Lastly, UPS charges a brokerage fee, which is added on to a customs charge at the border.....in regular shipping you don't often pay customs, it's hit and miss, but with UPS you ALWAYS pay customs. I don't mind...it's $15 at the most..but the UPS brokerage fee is $40! So, adding this up...I paid $99 for the set, $15.26 for OVERNIGHT shipping which I didn't receive, which amounts to $123 and change Canadian on my CC as of Sept..25th I think.Adding another $55.12 to that total and you get $178.12 CAN for me to get a shipment that is a week late. I couldn't receive the shipment today, I was home all day Friday so I couldn't take today off as well, and I should have received it last Tuesday, so as of tomorrow it's a week late, and costing me a HELLuva lot more than I originally was told. This is on the heels of two other shipments not arriving, taking weeks to get straight, and having my cc stolen after giving it only here. I love the music, and I enjoy having the physical product...but guys like me are a dying breed, and it's unbelievable that they aren't doing a better job of keeping people like me motivated to purchase their product. It affects EVERYONE here, because even people who get everything fine will lose out if enough people have my type of problems, and decide to give up on buying this stuff. If the numbers drop too far, buh bye releases...and that's a freakin' shame because I love music, the Grateful Dead are my favourite band, and this constant hassle is tearing me apart emotionally as my loyalty wears incredibly thin. I don't expect the mail order days from yesteryear, but I first alerted customer service on Thursday, and it's almost midnight Monday night and I still don't know if I should pay the extortion fees and try and get it back, or just refuse it and repurchase it, using standard shipping, and wait for three weeks for it to arrive....which really sucks 'cause this wasn't MY fault...Deadnet & UPS screwed up, I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake by having to wait so long. And maybe I won't.....because there's always the option to not bother to repurchase it at all. Thanks to everyone for their kind thoughts on the hassles, the customers/users here are good folks, deserving of great treatment for their dedication to a dying format. Hopefully, Deadnet will wake up and notice. First show: July 4th 1986, Rich Stadium. Last show: July 6th 1995, Riverport Amphitheatre

ACT 1 (Fulfilment Centre) UNDERPAID WORKER. What do I do with this one boss, its addressed to somewhere foreign BOSS: Let me see. AHHH. Its for that Badger. He’s always being mean to us so let’s teach that f*%&er lesson about messing with us (roughly pulls out Bonus disk, takes a deep breath and sneezes all over it) Now throw it in the UPS box so he cops some extra charges. Heheh. UNDERPAID WORKER. Whatever you say boss ACT 2 (France: 2 weeks and 200 bucks later) BADGER: WTF my bonus disc keeps skipping right in the middle of the big guitar solo on ‘Comes a Time’ (presses eject, carefully wipes spatters of dried residue off the disk with s soft cloth and little warm water and tries again) Hmm seems to work now. Wonder what that stuff was on the disk? Hey this is really good :-) THE END

That will teach him a lesson too for messing with us. Parcel arrived today at home apparently. really worried to listen to the cds now!!

Just got to disc 5, one minute into Bertha and there is the same sort of click and brief loss of vocals. Anyone else notice this? Very similar to the problem noted on Disc 2 Scarlet Begonias. If there are quality issues with this set, could you imagine trying to get that resolved. Really considering this as my last purchase from this outfit especially after the credit card situation.

We all had better keep an eye on our credit card accounts. Mine is set up online, so I can watch it daily. Apparently some employee at the GD merchandise store is problematic. Allman, did your credit card company get a shipping address on the online purchases? or were they all done in person at a department store? Hopefully they can track down the slippery fool. Greg SC

Musicalbeds - I'm having the same issues as you here in Canada. Was dinged $54 by UPS in customs fees. My wife paid for the parcel without knowing what it was. I'm fed up with waiting for answers from customer services after repeated emails with no response. I'm at the point where I'm ready to return the box unopened and I'll refuse all charges through my credit card company. Every release lately there's issues with packaging, with quality and with shipping. On top of it all, to be gouged with further charges at one's front door and receive nothing but silence from customer service is really the last straw. I own every GD release and have endless hours worth of great music to keep me occupied. I really see no reason to spend my hard earned money on something that now causes nothing but headaches. I'm getting off the bus - they can have their box back - I know I'll get my money back from Mastercard.

I received my Winterland boxset yesterday (Upstate NY), it was ordered on September 15. I did a quick listen and I am very pleased with the release! Did a quick check on disc 6 and it has the correct tracks on it (The Other One, etc.). MadDoc, Allman: I have the same issue on Scarlet Begonias (disc 2) - Jerry’s voice is lost in the mix from 1:06 to ~1:22, some crackling around 1:13. I also hear the glitch on “Bertha” (disc 5) around the 1 minute mark. There is a similar issue on the beginning of “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” on the bonus disc – Jerry sounds like he is in a cave (heavy reverb) from 0:13 to 0.29, then his voice is brought up properly in the mix after that. My guess, as with many of the other 2 track recordings (Dick’s Picks), that these anomalies are the various technical, mixing and master tape issues, but only Jeffrey Norman would know for sure. I wish that the booklet included some mastering notes from Jeffrey. I personally enjoy reading about the various techniques that were employed to make the music sound as great as it does. Thanks to everyone involved in this release: Betty Cantor-Jackson (for the great recording), David Lemieux, Jeffrey Norman, Emek, etc. Thanks also to Marye for her on-ending support on the dead.net site.

I haven't received my order yet although I only placed it last Thursday evening when I got home drunk and without my wits. It will take time to make it down to my neck of the woods anyway and I selected the cheapest shipping option. Clearly there have been major issues with the order and delivery processes for this release. I actually held off ordering much longer than I usually do for those reasons but, as I said, ordered it despite my reservations because I'd drunk them away last week. I've got my fingers crossed that my order was accepted, processed and has been dispatched. Unfortunately I also have received no confirmation email but I assume that, if my order worked, it would have been sent by now. I believe the store has charged my credit card. Frankly, I think that's the biggest problem here - being charged without being notified is a real worry (and, dare I say it, possibly not strictly legal). The Amazon experience, for example, is more pleasant because one isn't charged until one's order is processed and/or sent and one invariably receives emails confirming the order AND shipping. Right now I'm not sure what stage my order is at. I don't even know for sure that the apparent charge to my credit card was a legitimate charge or credit card fraud! Regardless, I'll keep an eye on my credit card account and await delivery of the item. I've never had problems with dead.net orders before (apart from one slight hiccup which was resolved promptly) so am assuming the best in this case. re: the apparent vocal drop outs - I think it's highly unlikely these are disc problems. We're talking about 2-track live mixes here so there's bound to be mixing issues, tape flaws, even patches. Obviously Betty Boards are spectacular at the worst of times so we've come to expect brilliant quality the whole way through but it's quite conceivable that there were brief tape/mix problems or even microphone issues. How often do you expect to hear the vocals kick in after a long jam and find that the first few words weren't recorded? It's because the mixer would have faded down the vocal mikes to minimise all the bleed they would pick up from the other instruments. The Betty Boards have a minimum of these, presumably because Betty was recording these the purpose of listening to them later, not just as a "sonic journal", so they don't reflect as much of the 'on the fly' mixing that Dan Healy et al would have done as the PA mixes do. I don't want to sound like a parent but if we want complete shows (and I am happy for complete shows and compilations) we have to put up with tape anomolies. It sounds like there's a minimum of these and I'm willing to accept the odd missing vocal line or burst of static if it means we can get another Winterland boxset. I'm much more concerned about whether or not I'll receive the boxset at all!

My credit card have been reserved for 799 SEK yesterday. I suppose that is the Dead Store. On the other hand they reserved 786 SEK when I ordered the Winterland box on the September 25th. Hopefully the 799 SEK yesterday is only a recharge and not an extra charge, because someone is milking credit cards at the Dead Store ... Haven't recieved an shipping notice yet though .... I've listened to all three nights of this release, but from a different source. The matrixes available for these shows are great. A lot of care went into fixing sbd issues with aud patches. Laptop computer - $695 High speed internet - $39 per month CDs for burning flack files - $12.95 Listening to hundreds of Shows without the hassel of dealing with the Dead.net store PRICELESS!!!! Well it is now a week later and still no response from anyone. This is a flat out disgrace from someone who has purchased MANY items and supported this CORPORATE family. Frankly I am disgusted. I guess it is time to abandon ship and start getting my items trough illegal means, oh well live and learn that change is not always best ... On September 29th, 2009 silentmark said: ... and I've heard nothing from customer service. I've sent a couple emails with no response. I won't even bother with calling the 1800 number ... Is there anyone in the org that can help a person who is willing to spend MONEY ? Sheesh...
