I have been an environmental activist since I was about 14 -1970. At that time I was involved in a recycling group. In the late 70’s and early 80’s I was involved in the anti-nuke movement taking part in demonstrations, marches and educational activities about the dangers of nuclear plants and nuclear proliferation. In the late 80’s my activities turned more towards habitat and wildlife issues. In 1989 I formed Tallgrass Prairie Earth First! We brought in almost 30 speakers and events to Iowa City about environmental issues. At the same time we stopped illegal grazing in public lands in the city, curtailed some cutting of urban trees, stopped the destruction of habitat for a rare orchid in a county park, stopped spraying of pesticides on several prairie remnants on public and private lands. In the early 90’s I moved to the Northwest and became more involved in forest issues. I helped stop the logging in several Roadless Areas (over 5,000 acres, keeping them intact). I was a core person in stopping the Bureau of Land Management trade away a 600 acre area containing some amazing large old-growth. I helped form and lead several environmental book groups; been involved in or helped organize hundreds of rallies, demonstrations, press conferences and marches on environmental, peace and social justice issues. Also support for Civil Disobedience actions. Most exciting event ever was involvement in stopping WTO in Seattle in 1999 (it was not a riot, many peaceful people; media slanted it to highlight violence as always). Current involvement in Sierra Club in wilderness, forest and wildlife issues. Those are the highlights –much more. Impeach Bush. Peace now. Hello FBI people. Subvert the dominant paradigm. Oh and I am a Registered Nurse working in a nonprofit mental health agency. Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

I am moving from Germany to Spain to be in charge of day to day operations for a game manufacturer. My professional talks with the owner have escalated from his thinking "I can afford to help out my broke and unemployed friend, and can use her skills somehow" to "Damn! I need her" and now he is thinking in completely different directions for growing his company since we've talked together in Sevilla in early June. I am totally proud to be taken so seriously in this industry that is so overwhelmingly dominated by men.

Hi All! I am a patient lady...couldn't find a man worthy to even date. So, I bought my (OUR, I'm married now) '74 VW Bus. I joined a VW camping club. At one gathering, Vince Welnick was present! He was playing keyboards for the band. I chatted him up afterward, had several pics taken with him (this was when cameras had film), and asked for a kiss before I left. I wanted a peck, but he slipped me the tongue! hehehe.... Then again, I was pretty-little-VW-driving DeadHead. hehehehe...I've been married almost 2 years, and the going joke is, "Now that i have the bus, I can get rid of the wife." He's had plenty of chances to kill me: snorkeling, SCUBA, on the back of his Ski-doo... I think DaMan loves his wife. ;-)

Hey - We've been working with Bob Weir over the last few months to create an iPhone app. Today it launched. Bob approached us about making and app featuring a twist on the classic kids songs. He recorded original music for some classic kids songs. His version of Old Mac Donald is wacky and crazy. The best part of this app is that 100% of the proceeds go to his charity The Further Foundation. So, check it out: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/weirs-world/id359503370?mt=8 Bob would love to hear what you and your kids think! We've also set-up a Fan page so he can keep updated about Weir's World. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Weirs-World/381664192352 Thanks - the folks at Weir's World

Hey does any what Jerry's real name was?

My brother told me his name was Sam Morse. But I can't find anything about that.

Now true, Sam Morse invented the telegraph, so there's some poetic connection there. But Jerry's name is Jerome (after Kern) John Garcia.

Jerry's brother cut off young Jer's middle finger with a hatchet! So it could be worse. They were quite young at the time. It did give Jer something of an iconic handprint.

For all you heads in the academy, and for those of us struggling to follow along, I wanted to share my excitement at a new publication: The Grateful Dead in Concert: Essays on Live Improvisation Jim Tuedio, Stan Spector, eds http://www.mcfarlandpub.com/book-2.php?id=978-0-7864-4357-4 My partner, Brent Wood, contributed a beautiful essay entitled "The Eccentric Revolutions of Phil Lesh". It is a great piece of work and feels good to see it in print after hours of conversation, listening and writing. He's already published an essay on Robert Hunter's poetry and psychedelic experience and is currently tackling the subject of Jerry & tragedy. These pieces will hopefully appear as a whole book in future. This book is carefully put together with foreword by Stanley Krippner and contributions by the usual suspects. Great writing, nice organization (tuning, first, 2nd, 3rd sets, encore...) and good ideas! I couldn't be more proud.

Thanks for sharing your ear to ear grin with us Marye....I was fortunate to have shared a few words with Mr. K. after a show at the beautiful Mt. Baker Theatre(where I work as an usher)up here in Bellingham,WA. He was on a tour featuring the 'Blues Guitar' with Robben Ford and Ruthie Foster. They each played solo sets and then traded licks in various combinations. I waited till the crowd got done with him after the show in the hope of asking how best to obtain a copy of 'Electric Hot Tuna....Live at the New Orleans'....Jorma was very kind and such an 'easy talker'.... P.S. It was so good to see and hear him playing with Jack Cassady at 'Furthur Fest' in May....

I was really surprised, having done about 82 gazillion interviews with all kinds of people over the last 30 years, how easy and comfortable he was to talk to. This is one of my faves that I've ever done. One of the things he had to say is that he and Jack got to talking recently and realized they'd been playing for 53 years, and how many people are there that have not only spent their lives on one job, but one job they loved?

TL: When I started inspecting export grain in southern Louisiana, I met 2 people from Mt Carroll: a young guy named Mick Merboth and an older gent named Bud Miles. I haven't see nor heard from either since 1981. Recent news from Mt Carroll: 2 teens suffocated in a grain bin.... http://www.wqad.com/news/wqad-mount-carroll-grain-bin-accident-072910,0…

Congratultions marye on the Jorma interview. I just saw him (Hot Tuna) at the State Theater in NOVA not long ago (awesome show btw). I don't know him personally but he (and the whole band) exude a very cool and peaceful vibe. Ditto to everyone else TL, O, et al.

I'm proud to be working on a book called "Brand Like A Rock Star" that uses the experiences of rock 'n roll to demonstrate how to build powerful and lasting brands. The book is a collection of expanded postings from the blog www.brandlikearockstar.com. It should be out in mid-2011. Lots of cool bands are discussed, including Jimmy Buffett, AC/DC, The Beatles, and many others. The Grateful Dead are frequently included, and I would love to get feedback and input from the community. Please feel free to share!
