Road Trips Volume 3 Number 1

    Oakland, 12/28/79

The latest installment in our Road Trips series, now entering its third big year (and ninth release overall) is bound to become a favorite. Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 1 is the complete show from December 28, 1979, part of the sparkling run that has already given us the excellent Dick’s Picks: Vol. 5 (from 12/26/79). You’ll recall that these year-end concerts, held at the Oakland Auditorium because Winterland had closed down for good the previous New Year’s Eve, were the first holiday shows featuring new keyboardist Brent Mydland, who joined the band in April 1979.

The new lineup had been gaining momentum with each passing tour since that spring, and by December was truly hitting its stride. It helped, too, that the band was in the midst of recording their Go To Heaven album, so they were really playing together a lot during this period. This 12/28/79 concert is a blast: a super high-energy rock and roll show that also has its share of spacey jams and exploratory passages. The first set includes standout versions of “Sugaree,” “High Time” (rare enough that it always felt like a treat!) and “The Music Never Stopped,” while the second set opens with the always potent pair of “Alabama Getaway” > “Greatest Story Ever Told,” turns deep and introspective with “Playing in the Band” and “Terrapin,” and then later turns into a non-stop party with “Uncle John’s Band,” “I Need A Miracle,” “Bertha” and Good Lovin’.” If you’re not wiped out after that, the double-encore will waste you—“Casey Jones” and “Saturday Night”!

The sound on both discs is spectacular (it’s hard to beat great reels as source tapes), and as always the CDs have been mastered to the exacting HDCD spec, because you would accept nothing less. The colorful accompanying booklet contains a number of excellent Jay Blakesberg photos from those Oakland Aud. shows, as well as a typically inspiring essay by the always poetic Dead scribe Steve Silberman.

So it’s a win-win. A slam-dunk. A no-brainer. For more info on all the goodness packed onto these discs, click here. And when you finally come to your senses and decide that you can longer live another day without Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 1, you can order it here.

Yep - I'm outside the US. I've never had this problem before (not sure if that's relevant). Also, I found that if I went into the store (rather than the product links on the homepage) I could add the RT to my cart as it appeared as the featured product, but nothing else worked.

I just noticed that the default setting for comments displayed is oldest first. While this may seem correct for an archivist it really isn't appropriate for comments. Every other site I go to from TouTube to the Comedy Central to every online periodical orders comments from the most recent to oldest. I don't want to defend the correctness of it. I suppose it based on how we join conversations in the physical world - you may hear a subset of the exchange and if you want the back story you have to ask. And if you want to exchange there's little point in responding to the comment from weeks or months or even years ago that started the thread. So I have changed the option - God, I hope I don't have to do this for every collection of comments or forum posts! - but if the default had conformed to the reasonable expectation of most web users I wouldn't have bothered to post because I would have seen right away that others have issues with the schedule and lack of information on the site about it. Just sayin', man....

Anybody notice the bottom line on the store front page, the one that says: "Commerce powered by Globalware solutions" ? I checked out their website and they list Rhino as one of their clients - no surprise there. They also seem to have a much higher opinion of themselves than I have of them. If you have anything you feel you need to tell them, then you can do it at: http://www.globalwaresolutions.com/contact.aspx Maybe they listen to comments posted on their own site. They certainly don't seem to listen to comments posted all over this site.

... are using the business strategy made famous by those lovable three monkeys. They're called See No Evil, Hear No evil, Speak No Evil... Or maybe Sgt. Schultz from Hogan's Hero's is in charge of the Grateful Dead mail-order merchandise business: "I know NOTHING!!" It's too bad that they never favor us with a response, I don't get it. I bet the Three Stooges could do a better job than whoever is making the decisions at the Rhino Co.

Both Cd's arrived in UK. Again an issue with USP charging £ 14.60 that is approx $22.00. In future the "free shipping" is better to skip and order individual releases.

While Phil and Bobby have taken the music FURTHUR with their new band, Globalware Solutions has taken Rhino and the GD store FUBAR with their incompetent business practices. "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

For those that are asking if anyone's received both sets: I placed my order on 10/21 for both Road Trips and Jerry and received both including the bonus disc yesterday on 11/12. Despite the free shipping option, which I'd usually use, I picked rush shipping. I'm in North Carolina. Good luck to everyone!

This set was supposed to ship AROUND November 10. I preordered it, got the confirmation right away, but as of today, no CDs, and my card has not been charged. I'm not worried yet, since the last Winterland box set was also delayed in the same fashion. What really bites is that my order status is not available anymore!!

I was under the assumption shipping would be on 11/11. I'm in California so there should be no international issues here. Some of you appear to be getting it. What is up with the delay?

As I recall, it was stated that shipping would occur around 10 or 11 November. It would seem that orders get sent out in relatively small quantites each day, not all on the initial release date. Some people in Europe have received theirs, others, like me, have not yet received their order. My card was charged on the 8th so I expect to receive mine this coming week. The same situation seems to apply to those in the US. It all seems to hang on that fact that not all (pre)orders are despatched on day one. If your card has been charged, its on its way, otherwise it isn't - yet. As we are all aware, the whole show has been stripped back to a bare minimum and things go slowly as a result. I'm not defending that, it is just the way that I see the situation.

On November 16th, 2009 Captain Kevin said: Any easy solution or reason that I can't get info for the discs to show in"I-Tunes" never had any problem before and other discs are still copying over o.k just not RT 3-1 or Let It Roll The reason iTunes doesn't recognize the disks is that no one else has gotten their CDs yet to add the info to the iTunes database. You are the first. You are the one that has to add the info. Of course if the sub (standard) contractor that Rhino uses to do their Internet commerce was actually doing their job, the rest of us would also have their orders. But that's the way it goes, Rhino tries to save a few bucks, cut some corners, and loose a lot of loyal customers. to buy from Spin in the future. They cost a bit more than direct from here, but postage (from England to Holland) is minimal. The big advantage would come if there are any problems - anything is better than trying to get a problem solved through Customer Service at the DeadNetStore. I have bought things from Spin before and have discussed things with them. They are always helpful, informative, quick to reply - in fact all things that the DeadNet Store is not any more. I just don't need all the hassle and certainly not on a regular basis. People may call them "scalpers" but they are offering something for local purchase that is otherwise only available as an international purchase. In most cases buying online from the US to Europe is no problem and also no problems arise when dealing with an issue via Customer Service. Unfortunately the same can no longer be said about the DeadNetStore. In the past, one could vote with one's feet; now you can vote with your mouse. For me, "scalpers" are those that buy product and then offer it for sale elsewhere at ridiculously inflated prices, generally with no back-up in case of problems. It may seem that I am overly stressing problems, but in my experience quality control is also a serious and regular issue with the recent DeadNetStore offerings. If it wasn't for the everpesent MaryE, many of us would be in deep (choose your own definition).

The Amex gift card I used to order RT 3.1 and the Jerry disks has finally been charged on 11-16. I placed my order on 10-24. Hopefully the disks will arrive before the end of the week. Between the time I ordered the disks and the time the card was charged I legally downloaded 8 high quality great sounding soundboards I didn't have of the band in flac format, complete shows, for free, or at least for the cost of my Internet connection. Do you think there is something wrong with this picture? "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

Does anyone find it strange that overseas customers are receiving orders before domestic customers (I live in the mid-west)? I ordered early morning on Oct 22nd and still have not received my order.Through Amazon.com I pre-ordered the Doors live in New York – also a Rhino release. During the pre-order period, Amazon dropped the price by 10 dollars and gave everyone who pre-ordered the $10.00 cost break. Received free shipping. They also provided an estimated ship date and estimated arrival date. I just received and email from Amazon that my order shipped on the release date and a tracking number. Maybe Rhino should consider having Amazon distribute the Dead releases because this is how a mail order operation should be run. Also, Amazon has return policy that is virtually hassle free so if I get defective disc from Rhino I am confident Amazon will have this replaced. To summarize Pre-order through Amazon: Estimated ship and delivery date, Price cut given to all customers who pre-ordered, Product shipped on release date, Email with tracking number Free shipping I will not summarize pre-ordering through Dead.net. We all know the routine.

I ordered RT3.1 on Oct 22, the day it was announced. I've been waiting for an official release of this show for years. It is now Nov 17th and my credit card has not yet been charged, which means the RT hasn't even been sent. But the new website doesn't allow me to log in - except to order! (The same thing happened to me with the Winterland 6/77 box set, but that order went through fine.) So I had to create another account in order to post this message. I phoned customer service last week, and they told me it would be shipped by the end of last week - NOT! I emailed customer service this week, but they never answer their emails, so I don't have much hope there. What's going on here? This has never happened to me before, and I've order lots of stuff from dead.net, both before and after Rhino took over. Bill Croft

My copies of RT 3.1 & JGB arrived today as expected. They were ordered on 22 October and my card was charged on 8 November. Now, 9 days after that they have reached Holland. I can't complain about that. Now I just hope that the contents play OK, because as wcroft noted above, Customer Service no longer reply to e-mails. I have been trying to get a reply out of them for 4 weeks now regarding a disc from the Winterland '77 box that won't play. Even with help from Meggan and MaryE I have had no response whatsoever. Still, now at least I have something to listen to while I patiently wait and wait and wait.

Bill Croft' Hey Bill, The best I can figure the problem is not Dead.net or Rhino. The problem is Globalware Solutions, they are the sub contractor that has taken over Dead.net's Internet store. They are a bunch of screwups that don't know the first thing about customer service, reliability, responsibility, honesty or anything else. They took an ordering system that worked just fine, and a payment system that was seamless, and fixed it until it broke. They in turn have subcontrated a call center in India whose workers don't have the first clue about who the Grateful Dead are or were or anything connected with anything in the unreal world we live in. What everyone needs to do is make as much noise to the remaining guys from the band and the Garcia estate, letting them know how badly their valuable brands have been handled and that the merchandising management needs replacement with a company that knows what their doing. Ordered Road Trips v3.1 from UK on 26th Oct. but still no sign of it. No response to my email (surprise, surprise), made international telephone call to customer services last week, only to be left hanging on line for ages while they checked it out - to be told that it would be shipped by last weekend. Card still not charged yet, so who knows how long I have to wait? Concerned now that when (or if?) I ever receive it, the bonus disc will have long gone. What shocking service. After all the years I've used Dead Store - this may well be the last time.

I finally called 1-800-CAL-DEAD to find out what is going on with my order. After waiting three different times for 10-12 minutes a piece I was finally connected. The fellow that answered was friendly enough, except that it took him three attempts to correctly type in my order number. Forget about his pronunciation of Albuquerque (couldn't describe it if I wanted to), and apparently I am from a state called North Michigan? Anyway, he told me my order was shipped on November 7, so it should be here any day. I sure hope I get the bonus disc. I think they need to do away with this bonus disc thing, its not fair and it puts too much pressure on us fanatics. Just make it a budget priced set like the old days. 6-disc Dick's picks for 35.00 anybody? Oh, and never, NEVER, neVer, combine anything else with a special offer (I got hosed on the shipping). Had to pay 5.00 shipping for my JGB 11/91 set. I guess the biggest gripe I have is that they don't even stream the Dead's music over the phone while you wait. It's...well...it's...I don't know what the heck it is. Whatever happened to hearing a rocking Sugaree on the phone while you wait, or the sunny little hippy girls taking your order in the US, or the established head commenting on your purchases? Got to take what you can get I guess.

I live in Colorado and ordered the Road Trips on Oct. 23rd. Today is the 17th and it still has not arrived. I'll give it a couple more days. I usually get a shipping email but not for this one. I wouldn't really mind about the tardiness but I don't want to miss out on the bonus disc if my order gets screwed up. Another reason why they should JUST include the bonus disc and not make it a limited time offer.

I like how it states, "The limited edition Bonus Disc we’re sending out with this one (if you order promptly) is also a winner from beginning to end, too. " Well, it seems as if everyone ordered promptly. Problem is customers are not receiving their orders promptly and are left wondering if the bonus disc is included. No one wants to order promptly, and get a late or non delivery without the bonus disc and still get charged $19.98. Is it that hard to have confirmation emails when the orders ship? All the other mail order companies I deal with send out a shipping notice. This would greatly reduce the paranoia.

Yeah, I noticed that same thing. I thought, free shipping, cool, maybe I'll pick up DP31, been eyeing it for a while. Have the shows on boot, but might be worth the upgrade. Anyway, then I went to check out and there was no free shipping. Suddenly they wanted like 5 bucks. What kind of sense does that make? Needless to say, I decided not to spend any more money than for the two new releases. Anyway, I'm sure we'll all get what we paid for, etc, and I don't mind that it takes a while, but the overall customer experience is dismal to say the least (except for Marye, she rocks).

I'm starting to freak out. Is anybody listening to our complaints? Bring back the jobs to US please, or at minimum the hold music has got to go. How can I check if I ordered the item online? Please let me know. The call in experience is cheap and trashy, the much clichéd call to India where the rep. says their name is John or Allen but you can hear that's probably a lie or made up. I never am going to call again ever. I was able to learn I ordered the item, but it's been so long without a response I was getting worried. I learned that the purchase is 'authorized' so I'm not going to freak myself out anymore, at least not until next week. BTW, anyone see the job posting for the UC-Santa Cruz Grateful Dead archivist getting lampooned on Jon Stewart Daily Show last week? I thought it was kind of queer, mainly 'cause you could tell Stewart is not a Deadhead. Kind of cool to get into the 'mainstream' media again though.

Well my credit card was charged which is a start. Interesting I had emailed Marye about my issue with my confirmation number and she responded that everything has shipped on the 14th, however my card was not charged until today. That makes me think that the company that they have farmed out the order fullfilment is suspect at best. I, like everyone else, hopes the bonus disc is in there. The bonus disc and the free shipping is what prompted me to go ahead and get this release. Since I have almost everything put out by the band officially and countless hours of other dead music I am going to spend my music budget on bands that are creating music today unless the next release is ground breaking. I can go to many of the bands websites today and pick up most shows for $10-$12 and no ording hassles. This is just not worth it anymore.
