Near as I can tell there is no Dicks Picks volume for 3-19-77. Shame on this guy Dave. Not what we do round here. That entire show is available @ archive.org, the kind way.

Hi jondflores, It's Playing in the Tower with Eyes of Fire in El Paso with a Cat here. I think you likely (and hope you do) have some Dick's Pick's discs. To be brief these are generally very good (I have never been disappointed). I got my first, Dick's Pick's Volume three----the Sugaree and Franklin's tower (My favourite - blew me away and I was seriously hooked). Anyway, for me 77' shows are amazing. Dick's Picks Volume 15 is a favourite of mine (another 77' show). Anyway if you can go see the Dead this spring. I only ever made it to one show, but I will never forget it. Anyway hope that helps. P.S. go to www.nugs.net and check out the free stash area for some great dead shows and other great bands (not the best quality recordings but a great collection over their incredible run. I really like the field trip - 1970, I believe). The El Paso and China Cat/You Know me Rider are awesome---actually the whole show is incredible----the music is out of this world and so is the vibe. All the best, Playing in the Tower with Eyes of Fire in El Paso with a Cat

Can anyone recommend a hotel or other accommodation for us and or a friendly pre-concert gathering/hangout/bar close to the show? Is there a Yoruba / English translation available anywhere for Babatunde's vocals that were sampled onto the Global Drum Album for the song "Baba?" I've looked around but can't seem to find them anywhere. Any suggestions or ideas would be most gratefully appreciated. THANKS!!! :0) ~pamela

try the Tape Trading topic. Also look in the Vindex topic (the most recent list posted in the comments) to see if this show is part of an existing vine.

Got me humming the tune to Row Jimmy now... "Julie catch a rabbit by his hair.... Come back steppin like to walk on air..." Thank you, RH ! I was at the Market Square 10/1/76 show. Frankly, I hardly remember the venue but sure did love the show. There is a terrific recording available on www.archive.org, an audience job, done by the late Jerry Moore. Fast forward to 1981. There is a vine circulating in the Vinyard (Downunder 1981?) with the 12/5 show. It's an outstanding show, too. Venture back into 1973 to hear the 10/27 State Fairground show, when you get the time, too.

I am almost POSITIVE the Dead played a second encore after Casey Jones on 10/28/77. It was my first Casey, AMAZING, and I recall the Dead left the stage, the roadies started breaking it down, but the fans were going wild! We would not leave. The Dead finally came back out and played another. That is how is remember it to this day. But I can't find any evidence to back it up, as all tapes/recordings from that show say Casey was only encore. Anyone share my memory??? Was it a dream, or another show, or ???Thanks.

In the late seventies (I think!) I got a tape called Make Believe Ballroom. It was very good, and had a lot of Blues for Allah material. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it a Dick's Pick or Download? Thanks

that would be the fisrt "One From The Vault". I have that vinyl bootleg too, and it was such an exciting time after the Dead's 'vacation' to hear that new material and how excited the band was to showcase it for us. The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

I have always heard the tale that after the Grateful Dead were banned from Richmond that they came back one more time as the Warlocks, but have never seen any setlists or dates that would show this to be true. Can anyone shed some light on the subject? Thanks!!!!

Hey all! I am giving an informative speech in a communications class about the tour experience from a fan's perspective. I toured for a short time, but I missed the 80's. I am looking for your best tour moment. Either on the lot, at the campground, or in the show. Godd, bad, ugly, anything. My speech is in 2 weeks. Any help is much appreciated!

Demon50 I have a CD titled, SAN FRANCISCO LIVE, consisting of live tracks which "were made at concert performances on US college campus, and for US college radio during the late 60's and early 70's." Two of the tracks are by The Dead. The first being, Morning Dew, clocking in at 8:37. The second is, Turn On Your Lovelight, which runs 10:36 and features vocals by Pig and Janis Joplin. Does anyone know where and when the Lovelight track was recorded? Thanks. Tony

Thanks for your reply, blue.jay.way. Given a choice between the two suggestions you offered, I believe it to be the June 7, 1969 concert at the Fillmore West. I have a partial of the Euphoria Ballroom show that includes Turn On Your Lovelight with Joplin singing and the version on SAN FRANCISCO LIVE is completely different as well as being about eight minutes shorter. Mystery solved.

I was listening to ''wake of the flood'' on vinyl and realized that on my copy the songs list Mississippi half step, Let me sing your blues away, Row Jimmy, then Stella Blue. but when you play the album Stella blue comes before Row jimmy. i looked at a different copy of the album that my friend owns and his plays the way the label is displayed. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about the album or if anyone has an album like this one?

does anyone have a photo print of Jerry wearing the Nudie suit? I have looked all over photo sites and search engines on the internet and have come up zip. I have a large photo(in a book I own) of Bobby and Billy in their Nudies-were Phil or Mickey ever photographed wearing theirs? I know Jerry's had skeletons on it-was black with lots of rhinestones. Thanx to anyone who might respond-have a peaceful day

I've been listening to Dark Star from Two From The Vault. TC plays a repetitive figure that works really well, and reminds me of Steve Reich and of Terry Riley. I'm sure that Reich lived in, or near, Haight around the time that the Dead lived there. I hope I'm not imagining this!Terrific Dark Star, anyway...

And thank you, bluejay, for the answer. I especially liked the bit describing how Terry Rileywalked out of Reich's concert, and then turned up to introduce himself ! And another book is added to the captain's I Want list. A well put-together unreality? Mercedes Benz are good at putting things together. Maybe I'll call them... Thanks again, mate! I appreciate the time and effort.

was 10/9/81 at what I believe was still the Boarding House (it was Wolfgang's later), but it was my first Hunter show and there may be an earlier version. Judging by the exuberance of the delivery, I think it was the first though!

Well, Mary, you got me to looking (I love looking up stuff), and the earliest "Touch of Grey" I could find was, according to Setlist.com, 8-21-80, early show, Other End Cafe, NYC. Unfortunately, db.etree doesn't list it, which probably means no recording circulates. Darn it. "A well put together unreality is pretty hard to beat." --Mark Twain

I can't get this song out of my head, but... I can't find it on any of my CD's. I'm thinking Bobby & the Midnites, or Kingfish, even possibly The Dead. Weir sings: "something something She's got some kind of hold on me.." Chorus: "Far Away GOT TO Get Away" Help, please! What is this song? What CD is it on? Thank you. pzahutt@yahoo.com

Grateful Dead Lyric & Song Finder Far Away Lyrics: Bob Weir Music: Cochran, Kelly, Weir Played by Bob Weir with Bobby & The Midnites, and once with Kingfish You ask why I'm desparate and worried And hid out down in Mexico See, there's a woman I left in a hurry And there's more if you'd like to know She appeared to me straight out of nowhere We made magic like some lovers can But that magic turned black as a nightmare So I packed up what's left of my sanity and ran Far away Get away Far far away So far away Far away Far away Got to get away I suppose I could just have surrendered Would have been easy to do Would have been one dizzy bender She's a sweet little sorceress too But she'll find me down here, ah, so easy Some special sense that she's got God, she's so witchy, so crazy Yeah, she's got a talent for stirring up the pot Far away Trying to get away Far far away Run away, run away Far away Got to get away Far away Got to get away Far far away Far away Got to get away She might find me tonight, got a feeling she might She's got some kind of hold on me I'd try to escape, but still there's a part of me Want's to just let it be Yeah we might meet tonight, with a fire so bright Tomorrow'd be easy to see A smoking crater, some broken hearts And some amazing memories Far away It's suicide to stay Far far away Far away Got to get away Get away Far away Far away Far far away Far away Got no reason to stay Got to get away [etc] Bob Weir Recordings Date Recorded By Album Studio 1981 Bobby And The Midnites Bobby And The Midnites "A well put together unreality is pretty hard to beat." --Mark Twain

I'm probably not the best equipped to answer, since I don't have this show in any form, but I'd hazard a guess that the official release of Dick's Picks 15 is gonna be the one to go for. I'd think the Archive version you reference, since it's a Rob Berger transfer, is pretty good, too, but obviously not a sbd. "A well put together unreality is pretty hard to beat." --Mark Twain

OK, I had a tape way back in high school, it was of a Dead show that was from 1970 or 1971. On it was the most blistering, energy driven version of "sittin on top of the world" I have ever heard. It was part of a segue, from what and into what I do not remember. I would love to find that show again, it was through the roof. TIA, Henry

Probably one of the following 3 shows from 1971. I've included the songs played with it. It was played 6 times in 1970 but I believe always as a stand alone. 12/10/71: Truckin' [7:59] > Drums [3:26] > The Other One [13:35] > Sittin' On Top Of The World [2:53] > The Other One [6:02] > Not Fade Away [6:01] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [6:18] > Not Fade Away [1:00#] 12/5/71: Dark Star [8:27] > Me And My Uncle [2:31] > Dark Star [12:23] > Sittin' On Top Of The World [4:16] 10/21/71: Dark Star (1) [15:09] > Sittin' On Top Of The World [3:16] > Dark Star [2:03] > Me And Bobby McGee [5:56]
