I loved this opener.
I made a bet with a guy in the parking lot of the Spectrum (renamed the F U Center) in 2002 at a "The Dead" show. I remember that Susan Tedechi was singing with them at that show. The bet was that the Grateful Dead played Casey Jones in 1984. He swore that it hadn't been played since 1982. He just knew it had been twenty years. We went and found a Deadbase in the parking lot and he couldn't believe I remembered that tidbit. It was easy. I knew the answer because I was here at this show and it is something you don't forget. Very hot. Merriweather is a great venue.

Casey Jones Opener
One of my very favorite Grateful Dead Memories
This was it!
Not that I needed it, but I was a sophomore in high school and this was my 3rd show. I was dosed by a kid my age who obviously had been raised on tour, and I was never the same. I was on tour by the next year and saw easily two hundred by 1990 at MSG where I saw my last. Though not entirely song savvy yet, Oh do I remember the Estimated, W.D.W.D.I.T.R., Morning Dew and Throwing Stones. If there was one show that flipped my for good, it was this one.
Rails on picnic tables
Part one: We would party in Philly and then drive to Jerry Weather just before showtime. Our 1984 tour crew just pulled into the parking lot, exited the cars and made a BEE-LiNE to the stage-right entry gate. As soon as we got inside the band was on-stage. As the first notes of Casey Jones undertow were picked-up'd by our ears, we immediately, all headed back to the picnic table area. We laid-out some giant Rail-Road rails of 80's U of Miami white in celebration.
What a rush, and what a treat.

Tour guide
I was just thinking how I kept a little book of what they played each night I saw them. Looking back at it found that just before the boys came on stage " Frogger " Mark came up to me and said they are opening with Casey jones. Him knowing the band the way he did I kind of trusted him on the inside knowledge. What was wild about it is he asked guy near us for his Frisbee dump a pile of stuff on it and we all took 1 big huge line and off we all went into Casey Jones.
bike show
As of last summer, this officially became a great show to listen to while mtn. biking. At least for me. 10-20 is great outside, too. Although, I came to appreciate that one more on a hike. I'm partial to the Drumz in that show. Here's the setlist, courtesy of dead.net:

The old days at Merriweather.....
Good shows. My only Casey Jones. After the '83 run, I tried to return every year they played there because I knew it was a special place. It didn't really matter if you had a ticket to this show, although I had received one ticket from GDTS for each show of the tour. You could jump over the fence in the back of the lawn without anyone even caring. As a matter of fact, a few friends actually jumped out, I guess to go to the car and get another beer, and then back in without any hassles.
The roar of the crowd
This was in one of my first probably 20 shows I've seen. I saw the string of shows on the east coast this tour. I had heard a lot about songs on the most wanted list...Casey Jones, Cosmic Charlie, Box of Rain, St. Stephen to name a few...The energy here at Merriweather Post was awesome. I was young, just graduated high school, and wanted to see the Dead for a living :) Anyhow, I will never forget the sound of the crowd roaring when they played the opening riff to Casey Jones! This show was unforgettable. I loved the atmosphere. Always grateful!
