Thanks for the explanation from us less technically knowledgeable souls. Does the same thing happen each time you save or copy a .wav file? From what I can gather from this topic, the answer would be no. "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. A few weeks ago I tried converting an mp3 to wav just to see what would happen and the file ended up being a cda file when it was all said and done. cda files are the format you get if you buy a CD from the store. So I thought that was weird. I don't care that much as I would never convert mp3 to wav or flac anyways but I just wanted to understand it better... "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. flac vs mp3
A lot of you probably do not use audio editing software, but Mp3's are pretty much useless in that area. When I open a 50mb flac format song in Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition, it uncompresses to almost a gigabyte. Thats just one 10min song. I use this to get rid of tape hiss, or try and smooth over a tape flip. When I save the flac file in flac format it does not lose any information. I can open it and save it as often as I like and the information remains. Mp3's on the other hand will lose a little information every time I save them. For example, If the song were a painting: Compressing it in flac format would be like rolling it up and putting it in a tube. It would look the same the next time you open it. Compressing it in Mp3 format would be like folding it up and putting it in your pocket. Each time you opened it and put it away the folds and creases would get worse. A tale tell sign of an Mp3 in this condition is when no matter how loud you turn the voice and lead guitar sound muffeled. If you like Mp3's, cool. I use them in my Zen player and my wifes ipod. I dont see anything wrong with a Mp3 vine either. I sent That Nice Hippy Guy a Sublime concert in Mp3 format. It sounded pretty good! But please dont encode Mp3 back to flac. They will get mistaken for the real thing if the recipients of the file do not have the software to distinguish between the two. Thanks( I guess thats my 2 cents)

That's exactly what I do too. With a few CDs sprinkled in for good measure. I haven't found a way to flawlessly listen to my ipod in the car yet so that's where CDs are nice. but has anyone tested it? Just take take two cds, both with the same jam...one in mp3 format, one lossless (don't label which is which)...mix em up....and of course listen on the same speakers to control the experiment......after the fact write your guess as to which is which and see if u can tell a difference....I have not done this test myself but my theory is there would be no discernable difference between the two. That being said, I keep my shows in Lossless format on my external hard drive for archiving and compress to mp3 for personal use. "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. Well, you have heard of lossless; MP3 is loss. If you convert the same audio file to wav and MP3, the MP3 file is smaller, and the bit rate is smaller too. Does it really matter? No. Does an MP3 sound good? Yes. But purists do not like MP3 because it does have subtle audio differences. Think of an MP3 as a second or third generation tape.

What exactly gets "lost" when converting to MP3?? I'm with some of you guys - I think MP3's on an ipod sound awesome. I haven't been able to figure out what I'm "missing" with an MP3?? Yeah man, I dig mp3 too...I generally convert all of my lossless to mp3 (and keep the shnflac on an external hard drive) Mp3's are smokin.... I can groove for hours on end with no break of the vibe....put in a fatty mp3 disc and call it a day!!! I love it!!! (plus I cannot tell a difference on my car stereo or home stereo for that matter...with most shows)BUT....I still keep my Lossless archive for future listening/conversions when mp3's are obsolete....shnflac or lossless allows your collection to last the test of time....and we all need something 'built to last' "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. I too remember the not so distant days of trading tapes. mp3 at a decent bit rate puts me right where I need to be. Even when listening on headphones at high volume, every instrument is clear and crispy. I'll leave the archiving to the archivists, I want to listen. the 120gb of live Dead on my iPod keeps me groovin' down the road His job is to shed light, not to master...

Good morning everybody. I got the urgent message in my inbox to get over here. I have a lot of reading and catching up to do. I will say this, with all the new vines being proposed, I feel like I am drowning. There is SO MUCH stuff to keep track of. Thanks for all your efforts. I wish I had more to contribute.

I felt kinda groovy after listening to the 12/6/73 China; whereas with the 2/24/74 China, I had to put myself back together, so it must have been MLB. I'll continue researching this weekend.

OK, so this has nothing to do with the Vineyard, but I thought it was cool. There is this theoritical stuff in the universe called "dark matter." Scientists believe it exists because there is too much gravity in galaxies to be attributed to common visible matter. Any way, they now theorize that there are stars made up of the stuff spewing energy. When the time came to give these stars a name, "Dark Stars" won out in homage to the Grateful Dead, and to a lesser extent CSN. Pretty cool. In case your interested, here is a link to an article I read: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/091221-mm-dark-stars.html?utm_sou… "That path is for, your steps alone."

Any vine in my mailbox today should go out tomorrow. Otherwise, I will be away on Christmas adventures and escapades until Jan 4. So anything that shows up after tomorrow will go out first week of the new year.

this topic IS sticky. Functionally this means it goes to the top of the heap in the Vineyard, from what I can tell, but it only applies within the directory.

but have any of you had the chance to get The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 2: Jerry Garcia Band, Keystone Berkeley '75? I have been listening to it all day and it keeps getting better. The "Let it Rock" that appears on it is a little slower than usual, but crystal clear. A good copy of this song is hard to find too. Anyway it's great, I recommend it.

Hey all, I'm heading to San Fran here in a bit and will be back this weekend. I will try to take care of any vines that come my way by early next week. To make matters more difficult, I've been having computer issues and may need to fix this thing when I get back. Will be in touch. Have a grate New Years everybody! This is the first time I have compiled a list of everything that I have. It took me a few days of typing (pecking really). I deleted around 900 gigabytes of music that I was more or less "archiving" and never listed to. I haven't got around to making a list for the Grateful Dead or Jerry Garcia Band yet,(maybe next Christmas vacation) but this is pretty much every other band that I collect. I have already sent it to a couple of you that I trade with, if any one else want to see it PM me I will send it to you.

You can build a list of the contents of a drive in a few short key strokes.1. Open a command prompt (CMD) 2. change to the drive you want to list C:\Users\Rick>g; 3. Type in dir /b /s /a:d >show.txt (you may call it what ever you wish) This will create a text file in the G drive called show.txt if you would like an Excel file use the .xls extension. More in-depth explanations found here www.computerhope.com/dirhlp.htm Here is an example of the code I use - C:\Users\Rick>g: G:\>dir /b /s /a:d >show.txt G:\> Happy New Year Everyone, Peace Rick

Luckily I started mine right after I got started with this whole wonderfull thing. If anyone would like me to send you mine let me know. I really need a TB harddrive. I work with this 80gig one on my laptop, and burn everything to cd, which I would probably still do, but I'd like to start keeping all of the lossless files. Btw marye a new "new vines" section sounds like a great idea. The 2009 one is getting pretty big. Peace, Trevor "You know the one thing we need is a left handed monkey wrench....."

Especially in the direction of the flac files being traded here. I think we have grown quite a nice library of music to choose from. I am surprised the membership has stayed so small. There are some sites that have hundreds of people trading and half the music that we do. I am thankful to be a part of it.

I am finishing up listening to spring and summer 79 and will vine the "best of" those tours soon. I still have to listen to a bunch of the 1980 acoustic shows, and will vine those sometime in the next month or two. And I recently acquired the rest of 1970, just about everything after 9/20, and will probably vine the whole thing. Hope everyone had a joyful holiday season and here's to another great year in the vineyard!

Tiger Lilly mentioned David Bowie sharing the same birthdate as the late Elvis Presley: Happy #63, David! In his honour, are there any sources of bootleg Bowie out in Dead Head land?Listening to "Heroes" this morning while enjoying the crispy, snow-caked -2 weather in Kansas. David's first USA performance was Sept 22, 1972 at Music Hall, in Cleveland Ohio, home of the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame! I have seen Bowie perform, once, at Starlight Theater in KC. He is a remarkable entertainer, nearly as rambunctious as Mick Jagger.

Hey all...Just leafing through this week's Sports Illustrated magazine (Jan 25th) and noticed a piece written on Jim Irsay, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts.... I was interested in the article for many reasons.... none of which I guess I need to go into here.... but right there on Page 57 in the picture with Irsay is Jerry's Tiger. I remember that Irsay bought it many years ago... among many other interesting purchases... the guitar is not mentioned in the article but Stephen Stills and other references are made.... Thought you might find that curious.... I did. Be well all. Raymond
