Right on, Heartbeat.. (and Caleb for the absolute best historical perspective on all things Grateful Dead). ..and lets not forget Phil's influence. Jerry's compositions seemed jazzier than Phil's, but Phil's roots were drenched in Jazz.. add a pre-hiatus Billy and Bob to the mix and we have a Full-On Jazz Band. For example, I always considered stuff like the Dark Star from 5/4 and 5/11 were Jazz Masterpieces, full-on Opus's (among so many others). But really, peak Jazz ensembles. _____ I've always thought Django was amazing also. There are so many parallels to Garcia. If I were to describe Jerry's picking style to a complete stranger.. I would say its a lot like a like a cross between Doc Watson and Django Reinhardt. I think this also carries through to his electric guitar playing. If this thread continues, I have more to add.. but I have spent the last 72 hours gutting and renovating the bathroom in the my gf's rental townhouse. Holy crap that was a lot of work, time to get horizontal.

Hearing Jazz in the Dead

There are all sorts of jazz influences in the Dead, not just the obvious ones that "sound like" jazz. Jerry was heavily influenced by jazz pianist Art Tatum, guitarist Django Reinhardt, and saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Weir was influenced by McCoy Tyner. And everybody in the band was influenced by Coltrane and Miles to some degree. My Parents

Are of "The Greatest Generation," Mom's 89 and decently healthy, still drives and does a lot of housework. My Dad is 91 and in his "late November/early December" of his years and is still healthy and cognizant for people their age. They're both of the big-band/swing era of 1940's early 50's and don't appreciate rock. Both enjoy baroque and classical music as well as some opera, especially when New York's Metropolitan Opera Company is on the FM, like Saturday afternoons. They really supported me when Jerry died almost 22 years ago, and they knew it was important for me to morn in the way I did. They also know that my favorite place for me to listen to "this Grateful Dead music" is in my car or truck while driving, so therefore no drink or drugs are involved. Actually they turned me on to their music, and sometimes I think I can hear jazz & big-band influences in the music of the Dead and Jerry Garcia. My Dad hears jazz in Eyes Of The World.

Mode: Surround Sound 5.1 Volume: Dog Howling Loud Mind Bender: Dave's Picks Volume 9, aka "Dinosaurs, the Dead, and the Land of No Return", May 14, 1974 Initial Comments: In days of yore, a Bertha / Uncle opener meant something. This is a Keith-heavy adventure from the very beginning, and features one of my favorite opening salvos in the officially released recorded legacy - Bertha Me and My Uncle Loser Black-Throated Wind Scarlet Begonias This show gets better every time I listen to it, and I've always liked it.

in a few days... Been listening to Leonard Cohen's last album, "You Want It Darker" over and over again lately. Released just 2 weeks before he died, I think it is his masterpiece, and it is haunting me... That's where I'm at right now.

Dad loved to harmonize

had a natural ear for harmony, he could harmonize to anything without even trying, and often did. One of Dad's favorite stories he liked to convey was the time he was on some boat somewhere with Pete Seeger, one of his idols, and got called up to the "stage" to harmonize with him. I don't know the details. He loved when I played "Reckoning" the most, neat and tidy tunes he could harmonize to, without all the extra jamming. I sure miss those days...and him.

Fantastic story especially when it involves converting those who we may have thought were beyond conversion. And double.....nay....TRIPLE points for them being A Parent. Glad to have inspired a (potential) '91 listen as well. Love that show. And I know it's been discussed around here before, but I also recall having seen the Eyes of the World and the Saint of Circumstance on a Friday evening program called "In Concert", late at night. I had a VHS of it for years which I somehow converted onto an audio cassette just for that Eyes of the World. Imagine my elation when I discovered The Archive back in The Day and everything was accessible and downloadable. It was an epiphany extraordinaire. Sixtus P.S. I happeed to be listening to my compiled list of the February 26, 1977 show. And embedded in there was the Scarlet>Fire from May 5, 1977. The first show from this box. I have no idea how it got in there, but it was included as one track. And I listened to it. Curiously, yet still unfamiliar by listen. I have admittedly never heard this show despite its prominent locale among the golden magnificent trifecta. And as the Scarlet > Fire transition was unfolding, something suddenly happens and the band just takes off. It's a mesmerizing moment and makes one start paying attention henceforth. From there and onward, it hints at some really cool, familiar moments. As it was moving along I was hearing these little signature passages. I listened to it all the way through and my jaw kind of slacked and I said to myself...."self: this sounds like Cornell". Then once the walking wah-wah of Fire on the Mountain began its slow plodding stamp...just like Cornell....but a few bars longer....I went and checked the playlist and sure enough it WAS the night before. There are some uncanny overlaps; as with most amazing things that happen there's always something that happens before from which it has built. A theme. Feeling. Vibe. A malicious beat. God only knows what it is but it somehow morphs one night to the next into something intangible and beautiful. I love this shit.

Another Sucker on the Vine...

First off, these are truly great shows. If you are one of the few folks here debating whether or not the quality of all four shows stands up to the price tag, I will say that YES, they are that good. That being said, I would hazard to guess that most of us who frequent this site have had great sounding recordings of these shows for many years. Is it worth ponying up $154 to have the artwork, the book, and Normanized versions of these shows? Well,... I didn't really hesitate. Besides, its a credit card, not real money, right? Would I have liked some other shows released as a box? Sure. Will I enjoy the hell out of this set. I have been for years :) Peace

New Haven was my second show...3rd row center. That second set is burnt into my brain. First show was Palladium on 5/01. My original Cornell cassette is spliced with scotch tape, so this should be a fine upgrade.

The one everybody has been waiting for

Personally I think Buffalo is the best show of the run. Cornell's popularity is a result of being in early wide circulation as a well recorded show. "Best show ever" status could be applied to many performances throughout their 30 year career, but there's no doubt that Cornell is a good one. One of the earliest soundboard bootlegs in my collection from when I first started collecting tapes in the late-'80's. As a four show release, this is a little pricey though.

Don't want anyone getting frustrated trying to order this, so in case anyone else has this issue, here's a note I posted on the 21 board: Tip for anyone ordering online - I have had problems in the past ordering where the site shows an order in my cart at first, but then shows empty when I click to get to the checkout page. I think I remember other people mentioning a problem like this on previous orders too. That happened to me when using "never" allow third party cookies in Firefox. Changing that setting to "always" allow third party cookies took me to a proper checkout page. So anyone having problems with checkout may want to try setting cookies to allow all. Thanks, Dave and Company!

Knew this would be the box this year

40th anniversary, Betty Boards back, inevitable. Cornell was my first DAT back in '93. I'd had a couple really dreadful sounding tapes I'd received from friends over the years and a few insanely expensive bootleg CDs of some recent shows I'd picked up; "European imports", finally figured I should just start trading, bought a Tascam DA88, found a dude offering to trade for blanks and postage and a week later got a package with a tape saying "play this first", it was like a blind man seeing for the first time! Don't know what took me so long, I'd been seeing as many shows as I could manage since '87. Good times.

Has it really been 40 years?!?!?!? Got my pre-order in, this box will be amazing and will nicely complement the earlier May '77 release (5/11-5/17).

I think we broke something!

Looks like their might be a little bit of excitement for this release. The site just crashed out like crazy. I have my order page all filled out. I think I will wait a little bit before I check out so they can work out the kinks. Don't want to be charged 25 times or not receive a confirmation. I have to say, I have always preferred this show to the night before it. I cannot wait to hear Jerry's jam during TMNS, finally, in perfect sound quality! The splice of the listenable audience source, during the tape flip of the soundboard has always been one of those slightly cringing moments, during an amazing jam! Its there, too, on the Hunter Seamons matrix. Again, the patch, to me has always been listenable, but i have been waiting for this gem given its proper treatment, and official release for many, many, years! The help/slip/frank opener is my favorite, of all time! And the wonderfully beautiful Comes a Time, is pure bliss! Just an all out amazing concert! The rest of the box, is the absolute goods, no doubt! I cannot wait! Thank you to all involved! Now if i can just get my order to go through!!!
