What do Electric Hummus, Dead Jam and the Grateful Friends all have in common? They are all Boston area tribute bands led by Todd Lena (lead guitar player, singer and band leader). Todd is one of the very best Jerry style guitar players on the planet. When I play some of Todd's music for a Dead Head, they think it's a trick. They don't recognize the singer, but they think it's Jerry playing the lead guitar.

Love em!!! They're a fun way to relive old setlists and have good times to good tunes. Especially for post-Jerry Deadheads, as myself. As I'm sure most know, Dark Star Orchestra is superb. They recently recreated 5/8/77 in its entirety on 5/8/07 in Ithaca, NY. Here's a review of it from jambase.com http://www.jambase.com/headsup.asp?storyID=10551

I'm a DSO fan, too. My friends all know that I'm a Brent girl and all, so that means I was never really part of the whole Donna Jean scene. I like alot of what I've heard from Donna lately, just not so much the 70's Dead stuff. And then, I heard Lisa Mackey. Whoa. If you haven't seen DSO play, you really should. and I miss Scott, of course.

Splintered Sunlight is an amazing Dead cover band! As Denny said, they play a weekly gig in Ardmore, PA. Every Thursday night at Brownies. They've also been doing acoustic shows about once a month in my hometown of West Chester, at Doc McGrogan's. Great community vibes at Brownies, Great times! We're lucky to have such a great Dead cover band in the Philadelphia area! Rock on! "The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean."

I've seen the Zen Tricksters I think it was '97 at the High Sierra Music Festival in Bear Valley,CA. I've heard of The Schwag being a good tribute band but I personally haven't seen em. I was pleased to see Melvin Seals and JGB at the Brookdale lodge. Stu Allen rocks Jerry tunes( I know they aren't exactly a cover band but deserve some serious recognition. That's my 2 cents! It's got no signs or dividing lines and very few rules to guide

Johnny, Scamperoni, and Eric all have the E ticket as far as Los Angeles, Orange County is concerned. I do not know if the Travel Agents are still around in the San Diego area.I have been seeing The Cube since before Steve started singing, Thank you Steve for singing cause you have a great voice. Nate is = to Bobby to me, Tom is = to Brent, Craig has Jerrys personal OK to play the Dead's music well, and he does he ever. Larry is the most fun to watch in the band cause he is just soooo happy to play that bass and take you to the Phil Zone, please sing more Larry cause you also have a good voice! And who says that JGB isn't a cover band....... Stu Alen is = to Jerry if you close your eyes. You almost swear that this guy is lip sync-ing except when you are looking it is Stu up there making it look easy. Have a Grateful Day!!!!!!

Hey gang. Just had the first encounter with Dark Star Orchestra about three months ago. They played a show down here in Atlanta that was absolutely amazing for a tribute band. I was totally impressed with them. My girlfriend took me to go see them and I fell in love with their show. I honestly can say that at times while they were playing if you closed your eyes and didn't look up on that stage and see the guys up there you would have no clue that you weren't at a Dead show. Nothing will replace the shows that I have been to but it just feels right to know their shows are carried on by groups like DSO.

They are a spectacular band, fantastic. Philly area. Denny and Hunter are right on. I'm looking forward to seeing them at the Sellersville Theater, it's an interesting old theater. And I'm not a drinker, so it will be a nice change of pace from the usual bar atmosphere I usually see them in! Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!

However, I did notice they are going to be playing at a bar called Toomey's (Amityville) where I hang out. Any other LI heads familiar with this band or are going to see them next Sunday?

We agree strongly with Good ol GD about his view of The Schwag and Camp Zoe...the venue is absolutely beautiful with a natural amphitheatre setting of bluffs nestled in a valley...The Schwag creates one of the most amazing scenes we have experienced...they are truly keeping the familiar vibes of the Grateful Dead alive. The prices are always kind, and you can't beat their private security, camp where you park-park where you camp set-up, not to mention a bath-house with warm showers and flushing toilets. I have been playing in a Dead band in Blacksburg, Va (the home of VA Tech) since 1986 called The Kind. We formed at my 20th birthday party as the band we had scheduled to play found themselves in a state unable to perform so I grabbed some buddies and we took the stage. Now we are approaching our 24th anniversary and my 44th birthday - yikes! Our only goal was and is to have fun playing music. We have had a handful of lineup changes over the years I and the rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Wendy Godley are the only founding members that still play regularly. We have had a bunch of really talented folks come and go (and come back). We do a reunion show every summer at the Port O'Call in the Outer Banks of NC - we have as many former and current players as we can get together and put on one hell of a show. Folks coming in from as far as San Francisco and Hawaii to do these shows. We have gotten to play with some other great folks over the years including David Gans - who sat in at a gig at the Underground on Howard St in San Fran. Jerry Abrams (of Head Lights) joined us with trippy light shows and congas on some shows in SF that summer (1987). Robin Sylvester from RatDog played a couple of shows with us in Blacksburg and at the OBX reunion shows (he played guitar and keyboards - and is great at both and a great guy). We have opened for Rick Danko, Jefferson Starship, New Riders, Hot Tuna and a few others over the years. Our current lineup features me, Wendy Godley, Rick Godley (drums), Danny Dunlap (guitar, synth, vocals), Mandy Cash (vocals) Steve "Slash" Hunt (bass) - also Greg Bump (bass). Slash is a monster bass player and toured with Bob Margolin for years (Bob was Muddy Waters' guitar player for the last 8 years of his life and is standing next to him in "The Last Waltz"). Former members include Mark McLeod (rhythm guitar, vocals) who is now teaching economics at Penn St, and Tom Lehman (bass), and Tim Taylor (drums) - Tim lives on the Big Island of Hawaii and plays with Hawaiians Unlimited and competes in triathlons. Our website is thekind.org and we've got a bunch of videos on YouTube - search for "The Kind Blacksburg) Tom Snediker Lead guitar, vocals The Kind, Crossties, Scott Fore and His Hillbilly Hotclub
