    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

wondering if anyone listened to the morning dew and compared it to your own copies? Is it just me or is jerry's guitar slightly undervolumed in the new mix? I have recordings of cornell and the night before and after. I think I have a crappy copy of New Haven somewhere. On the fence if they changed the mix too much

I ordered May 1977 via phone but ...
.. their system crashed while they entering my info - after Rhino's system crashed twice while I was trying to place the order online early this morning. I got the order number via email - but I won't believe it until I get the CD set. On a side note - the name & address on my account was completely messed up. When Rhino took over order fulfillment they had my name down as my sister's name because she ordered the Dick's Picks 2017 subscription for me. That explains why I was getting emails addressed to her, but she was getting the merchandise. Good thing we live nearby. I never had this problem in the past when she ordered some Dead gift for me. The C/S rep also gave me the name and phone of Rhino's C/S manager - but I called him so I could get the correct info on my account, but I got a voice mail. I tried to get the info on my account corrected three times in the past - heck - I was given "Escalation Numbers" which Rhino/Warner Bros says is a big deal - but it obviously isn't. They really need to hire someone that doesn't frack everything up - like the previous order fulfillment company they used.

    First Row Buffalo
Me and a couple of friends had been following the band on this tour since the Spectrum shows in Philadelphia. Barton Hall way basically a glorified gymnasium. About the size of an indoor basketball court. No seating. After the show we went back to the rear entrance and waited for them to come out. A light snowfall was swirling around, big billowing flakes blazed like white fireflies as they caught the parking lot lights. Two black stretch limos were idling by the door. There weren't any other fans around, just some crew and university officials. The door swung open and they all tumbled out. Each one of them was carrying a black attaché case. The band had been running their own label for awhile by now and we'd bought most of our tickets for this tour mail-order through the Grateful Dead office in San Francisco. None of us were speaking up so I did: “We've got first row for Buffalo tomorrow night!" I blurted out to none of them in particular as I held them up. “Oh yeah? Lemme see them" Phil said. I handed all four to him. Bill, Keith and Donna had gotten into one of the stretches and left. Looking them over, he asked: “Did you get these from our office?" “Yeah, we did. Mail order" I responded. Phil had handed a couple of them around to Jerry and Bob. Commenting to the others, Jerry remarked: “Well at least something's working" They all chuckled. I told them what a great show this night was and, for some reason repeated that the tickets that they were holding are for the first row in Buffalo. Bobby said: “Let me see all those" and gathered them up. Jerry and Phil said goodbye and piled into the limo. Bobby slid in behind them, closed the door and they started to speed off, with our tickets! We ran after them yelling for them to stop. After a few yards, the limo stopped and the rear window dropped down as we caught up. We could hear them laughing riotously as Bobby's arm emerged holding the tickets, splayed out like a hand of cards. “See you tomorrow" he said though his laughter. Edit Reply

Fluffua 01: "I know it's been posted before but didn't Dick say even if he had the tapes he wouldn't release Cornell because of taper tapes being traded?" Yeah he said it, but never underestimate Dick's propensity for hyperbole. He contradicted himself through the years, but only in the name of extreme enthusiasm which I always found to be endearing. When old Dick started I think one of his primary goals was to get stuff released that was unknown to the trading community at large. Dick's 1-3 were exactly that. You have to consider the context of the times. Pristine SBDs were rare and much less accessible. Most of them that turned up commonly in collections were sourced from the Bettys leaked through the storage locker auction. The internet fundamentally altered those circumstances greatly. Dick's thinking was "everyone has it" but now everyone really has everything; at least access to all that circulates. There is unknown stuff out there but of what quality (performance and sonic) compared to these landmark shows that "everyone has". God rest his soul, but Dick said a lot of stuff that just no longer holds water or perhaps never did.

Born Cross Eyed: Curious about the box details too. Cool if it matches the size of the first May ’77 box. According to Cornell Press, the 200 page hardback book that comes with (in?) the new box is 5.5” by 8.3”. My May ’77 box measures 5.95” x 7.75” x 2.05” so, if the book's “in” the box. . . Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe a Dr. Rhino “Box Opening” video? Onward!

Finally!! Who ever called this run CONGRATS but I have three questions.1. I know he said 100 shows and I'm new with all this but does this mean this stash is from at least 69-79? I'm confused but I think Dave makes it official this whole stash of tapes is priority number 1. Sorry 80's+ fans.Hope I'm incorrect on this.I don't mind a change of arrangement eras. 2. I know this is special but compared to 77 and 78 box set's. is this price higher for the switch in distribution(which is worth the extra cash in my opinion. Dap21 was crazy quick compared to the Cozet place.)or the awesomeness of the deal and these shows.(My first two downloads from archive. 3. I know it's been posted before but didn't Dick say even if he had the tapes he wouldn't release Cornell because of taper tapes being traded? I'm happy all us crazy folk get closure. I pinched myself and got a confirmation of purchase so this has to be real. Be Safe and enjoy the weekend especially if your in Maryland or West Virginia.

Half the people out there don't go to grocery stores anymore, they have there groceries delivered to their front door, after making a simple online order. But we fans cannot order THEE boxset we have been waiting decades for!!! Sheesh!

BTW...I talked customer service and they're doing the same thing we're doing. Trying to order it online. It's like when the Griswalds went to Wally World. AHU, AHU, SORRY WE'RE CLOSED. Good luck to you all! I gotta go but my friends can stick around......

Just by chance I logged in on this sight within moments after they opened this page. I watched Dave's video above (about 15 minutes later) then successfully placed an order and received my confirmation notice. About 5 minutes after that while typing a post, the site crashed. I used Google Chrome with no issues in ordering. I've had problems ordering in the past while using Explorer if this information is helpful to anybody.

My guess is that so far they might have sold 4. This will be another one of those instances where due to an ordering system that can't handle orders there will be many many duplicate orders (just like many in fact!). I must confess that i am rapidly approaching the couldn't care less if i get this one or not threshold. Judging from the amount of guests shown as on the site they may be the subject of a DOS attack.

Amazing that this can happen again after the Europe 72 debacle. Hopefully things will get sorted out quickly and those who cherish this music will receive what they've been waiting for all these years. Not a good look for Dead.Net, but there's still time to do the right thing and right this ship.

this experience has been a huge let down for the Deadheads. Pure trickeration. I'm calling on Monday to cancel my Dave's subscription. I'm done with this website. Funny thing is . . . they don't give a fudgie the whale. They made their bank. They sold out. Literally.

It figures one of the only shows from '77 they don't have would be my 1st show at the Forum in LA. And I better get one of these box sets. Totally uncool for such a small batch of these to be made available. All this does is drive up the prices in the sleazo secondary market.

Like many of you, I've been trying for hours to place an order. If the demand for this box is so great, why limit it to 15,000 copies? That seems pretty arbitrary. They should change it now to 30,000 copies, which will relieve a lot of the anxiety.
