WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

    NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

    BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

    CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

Can't believe this thread is still going. I can never seem to find it from the regular website as they are obviously pushing only the All music edition. But today I received the almanac email and bang there is a link to this thread. Kayak guy thanks so much for that Meat Puppets link. Wow that band knocked me off my ass when I was 17. Was at a lower east side NYC club called the World when I figured I would check out the second floor of this club. I hear a 3 piece rock band performing for roughly 30 people. There were several hundred on the lower level drinking and dancing to a DJ playing bad 80's dance music. The Meat Puppets were punk rocking their way through some classic rock covers and playing many of their own repertoire. All I really knew was classic rock. These guys were young and fierce. It was musically speaking a life changing moment for me at the time. Even at 17 I was sick of FM radio playing the same 60's and 70's songs over and over. I thought rock was dead or at least simply coasting along. After that show I went out and bought the MP's current EP release Out My Way and MP 2. Then I picked up the obviously GD inspired Up On The Sun and immediately knew these guys were crazy talented and inspired by all the greats before them. Then of course I heard the Replacements and others in the underground scene. A few years later we had the last great rock music era courtesy of Nirvana and other great indie acts. So discovering the Meat Puppets and the Grateful Dead a year earlier restored my faith in rock. The 80's was the era of drum machines and synths but there were still a few bands playing real music. You just had to poke around to find them. Thanks for letting me vent all that out though I probably won't be able to find this thread again. Really psyched to get this box in a few weeks. Happy Passover to everyone. I remember back in the day it always coincided with Spring east coast tours. Mom I really need to miss the Seder. Why? I need to be at Nassau Coliseum or further out in Worcester Mass to see the Grateful Dead.

I will relish the NRPS with Jerry on pedal steel, he was much too hard on himself, questioning his proficiency and claiming he needed to practice too much to be good...his pedal playing with the Riders and early 70's Dead was extraordinary...Bobby couldn't play slide for shit, but he did...and the world is a better place for it as well as Jerry's pedal steel...

funny you should ask ;) Looks like a slow night here at the kiddies table. LMA is just so cool it NEVER ceases to amaze me. For the past 10 years, when i go to clubs shows and meet the "vintage" bands, i always lobby for LMA and tell them to check out the GD section and they could have the same thing because it's filled by the rabid fans and the tapers themselves, all they have to do is approve being on there, the rest is automatic. a couple of bands that have shown up eventually are Butt Hole Surfers, Meat Puppets and i'm still working on Mission of Burma ;) Just taking a stroll through the Pups section, which is getting more robust each time i check, i see this gem from the original drummer who no longer tours but runs their archives. Meat Puppets Live at Highlights Of 1985 on 1985-01-01 Uploaded by Derrick Bostrom on 10/22/2015 Its a 41 track best of 1985 that you can download in lossless flac, it's sick. It doesn't have Franklin's Tower, but it's got everything else. great palette cleanser stuff, lots of fun and part of the 1980's country punk movement that was similar to the spirit of the GD in 1970. try it out its FREE. https://archive.org/details/meatpuppets1985-00-00/03CommunicationBreakd… By the way the new Meat Puppets drummer is the son of Doug Sahm who was the opening act on the "experiment with horns" tour in 1973. This is the night before the experiment began, so no horns here, but it does have Keith singing deep in the 2nd set. Just me and the crickets here tonight.Working my way through 1970 it really makes one appreciate the foresight of Bear in recording and keeping all the tapes of the shows he was doing. Spring 1970 he's off the tour, after the January New Orleans Bust described in Truckin and the virtual vault goes SBD vacant, with AUDs now serving as place holders and reference points in the year. This is the part of the real Vault i would be interested in asking Dave about, 1970. With the return of the Betty's it gets easier to plot future releases for the 1971-79 years, but 1970 is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle that holds the most promise for unknown goodies to be found next. They go from Ballrooms and Festivals in 1969 to college Gyms and auditoriums, the tapes are primitive, the decks had auto level and was in the time before tapers knew that when they were chatting it was being recorded too. Great story about this one. https://archive.org/details/gd70-05-03.aud.goldman-sirmick.20852.sbeok… Rhino has already released most of the prime dates from this period already, from what i can tell. A super duper deluxe Bears Choice/ Dick's Pick 4 box with all of the Fillmore East Feb 70, early and late 11th, 13th & 14th Normanized would be a special pleasure. The June Fillmore West 1970 look ripe for a set and have seen some limited release as bonus material. Tomorrow morning will be back to working on the AUDs with this classic AUD recording that was a mainstay of cassette trading in the 70's in much worse sound. i'll skip the NRPS, but you don't have to. Grateful Dead Live at Capitol Theater on 1970-06-24 Big Railroad Blues, Deep Elem Blues, Friend Of The Devil, Candyman-> Cumberland Blues, Cold Jordan Not Fade Away-> Easy Wind, Dark Star-> Attics Of My Life-> Dark Star-> Sugar Magnolia-> Dark Star-> Saint Stephen-> China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, E: Uncle John's Band https://archive.org/details/gd_nrps70-06-24.aud.pcrp5.23062.sbeok.flacf

That would be so cool, but wouldn't that really cheese off the people that got denied on this box and now have the mysterious Music Only version as their only option? I think this page is now dead and all the official action will be on the Music Only page. According to the banner there's still less than 500 copies left and it's been sold out since a couple days after the preorder.

After the total meltdown and quick abandonment of this page to the All Music page i think it's unlikely we'll get anymore here. It is sold out, why waste any further effort on it, the All Music is the one they are pushing now, the unlimited, folio packaged one. I suspect we see more on the folio version before we get more on this one. Maybe after it ships, but until then there is no reason to do anything and remind people of preorder day or payment cancellations. Though Dr Rhino seems to really get off on the unboxing videos, i like the white gloves he uses.

Finally. Seems working now, only because dead.net got Rhino to open up their website. GD-fix your gremlins, already! How many times will you allow this to happen? Classic runs/tours will get big demand and need proper website volume settings. Most of the time this place probably isn't that high traffic, but there's probably never been ANYTHING in human history more word of mouth contagious than big Grateful Dead news, and the website would be run with that obvious truth accordingly. I'm stoked for this and don't wanna keep whining about pricing but...it matters. For something this costly, well over $100, the fact that a few bucks in shipping can't be thrown in is really ridiculous. And the only one of these that was really well priced was the Europe box, which at 450 for 72, 73? discs was a bargain. http://drygoods.phish.com/product/PHCD201/phish-st-louis-93-6cd-box-set… By comparison, this '93 set from Phish is VERY economical. I understand paying more for extras and stuff in a box, but when you're WAY over $10 a disc, you're simply overpriced.

I've been reading all the complaints and about how difficult it is to buy this so naturally I had to try it myself and I got all the way through the process on the first try! Problem is I can't afford the fucking thing so I had to, not without a certain amount of pain, just close the window without completing the transaction. Real easy process though... Well done GDM for making this project a reality after all these years!

Had work most of the day that kept me away from the computer, except for a brief window in the late afternoon, not a bad thing at all unless the Grateful Dead announces the release of a new box set! It was nightmare from 4:00-5:30 EST with many of the troubles people were experiencing earlier. I had a workshop at 5:30 PM that didn't free me up until about 8:45 PM and had no problem going through at that time although Rhino's webpage loaded up this go around. Was able to score this Box Set as well as the 5LP vinyl edition. Rock on!

It took less than two minutes for the order to go through. Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile and wait for Cinco de Mayo! Whatever unforeseen shit may hit the proverbial fan in 2017, this little box of magic will keep me grinning through it all. Good luck, gang. Hope you nab yours too.

Yeah, I too was tying to order this box set for 4 hours...I tried on my phone and on my tablet. I even called customer service. My shopping cart on my phone had 4 copies of the box set and 2 of Cornell. I guess some of my attempts to add to cart did get through even though I was bounced out. My tablet only had one copy that made it the cart. My calls to customer service included 2 that lasted 17 minutes only to be disconnected. Every call after that was disconnected within 30 seconds. Needless to say I was going bonkers through all of this. Finally I checked my tablet and amazingly my order was bounced to a rhino site, and glorious relief came over me. I had a rough day at work and upon watching DL's seaside chat I was thrilled. That was the first way I was notified. Then Dave finished the chat by mentionibg the limited release of 15,000. That was when the hell started ad I immediately tried to order. Even though I have had these shows on tape, then on download (mp3, and then flac) there was no way I was going to miss getting this box set. If I would have missed it because of this ordering/website debacle I think I would have found my way to the wharehouse where these are being shipped and I would have procured one box set by any means necessary. Glad it didn't have to go down that way.

It finally worked for me. I'm sorry so many have had much longer wait times than I had, I was trying for about 90 minutes. But, the order went through, and I just completed a listening of the Scarlet Fire from Cornell, possibly the 25 minutes of Dead most permanently etched into my synapses, so a great test of the sound quality. My first reaction is that it has less reverb than my old copy, but it has a clearer sound, too. Phil has more bite, and the MuTron on Fire on the Mountain has more bite as well, perhaps due to my old copy being so loud and peaking well into the red. Very satisfied. Except, now I have 2.5 months to wait for the rest to come. The best thing about this box, to me, is perhaps the fact that if you're somebody that thinks Cornell is overrated and that Boston or Buffalo was THE SHOW, you get them all! Now that debate can come on better terms with high quality sound for each show. I'm debating getting Cornell vinyl, and know I'll be getting a stand alone cd copy, because the packaging is that nice. I think the Dead just may have the #1 album the week of May 5th, as Cornell is going to sell tens of thousands of copies.

Thank you, dead.net and Warner! I got my order and the MP3 and I've been following along with the Comments. Whoah! The first couple of hours with Warner looked like a Wile E. Coyote moment: portal is painted on a rock. Roadrunner rolls right through but Wile E. tries to keep up and crashes, then gets hit by a train. Ouch.... Burger: Your honor, we've heard the testimony of this witness that the first part of this tape has been edited or tampered with. Mason: All this working on the tape, this cutting and splicing, must have been important. Witness: I should think you'd be grateful! Burger: Well, we're not grateful, mister! I should like this tape entered in evidence and marked for the people exhibit D. Let's listen to it again, shall we? Lieutenant, turn it up with the volume high!
