WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

    NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

    BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

    CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

Was listening to the digital single at work a few times yesterday, and it brought smiles to my face for 25 minutes at a time. The only sad part is now having to wait to listen to the rest. I cannot wait to be siting there reading the Cornell book as New Haven, Boston, Cornell, and Buffalo are screaming out of my speakers. If Dave's 23 is an 80s show, that's cool. If 24 is another one, cool beans, just make sure Althea is on at least one, and Foolish Heart and Blow Away make one, too. The riches we're going to be receiving for years to come will definitely be worth it. Though considering I'm thinking about adding the vinyl as well, I'm not sure my bank account is as happy as I am...

I'd mentioned that I began listening to this last week in order. I've had a difficult time getting long sessions in with it, but I have been listening to it and I'm up to Chicago night two. I've always liked this Scarlet Begonias / Fire On The Mountain, despite two flaws that only a Deadhead would pick up on: the short performance of Scarlet, and a conspicuous transition into Fire On The Mountain. Otherwise, it's top 5 material in my head. Jerry's guitar is super-prominent, like DP 29, Billy is a driving force that rocks up the tempo (I believe it's Billy), and Donna puts forth some of her best kitty-cat cooing on record - so beautiful. Vocals are perfect, thanks Jerry, guitar soloing is inventive and melodic, piano is piano-ing just right (and of note is the fact that we're hitting that spot in May where Keith stops with the Polymoog). It's in the band's legendary history that he didn't like playing it, and I agree - piano better.

I've read a few comments about frantic fans having trouble buying the Cornell show. I know the web site had its customary issues when they announced these releases (have they EVER handled volume well????), but I was under the impression that Cornell would always be available individually and just the box and the vinyl were limited. True?

I'm with you on the boxes. Now that they're available, Berkeley '72, Boston '76, and Winterland '77 should take precedence before anything else (except Ark '69).

    I wonder
I wonder if the Thirty Trips set accelerated the urgency to obtain these Betty reels. While there are certainly some all-time great releases in that box (11/10/67, 2/22/69, 9/24/72, 9/18/74, 9/28/75, 10/27/79, 9/18/87, 9/10/91), there were so many SQ issues (early eighties) or cuts/splices that needed to be corrected (11/14/73, 4/15/70, 5/16/81). Also, some of the years had some puzzling choices that could have been corrected by the presence of the Bettys. I know some may like Cobo '76, but what if 6/11, 6/14, or 6/29 had been there in it's place? 4/25/77 is likewise a great show, but now Swing '77, 10/2 and 10/29 are available! 3/18/71 over Felt, Ann Arbor or Capitol Theater '71? I dunno. 11/14/73 is a candidate for best show in the set, but it contains so many patches, that I wonder if TBTB would have selected 3/16, 3/24, 4/2, 5/26, or 6/22 if they had the option. It's a moot point now, and we can look forward to a stacked Dave's series over the next 5 years, in addition to a Berkeley '72 and Capitol '71 box.

    Re: 80s & 90s
I think single 1 show CD release is the best way to go for 80s & 90s. That way Dave's Picks doesn't get watered down with mediocre poor sounding shows like Colorado, but the 80s fans still get their taste. Pretty safe to assume if the DaP series only had 2 shows from the 60s & 70s, it would have died out after season 2. I wouldn't want to see another box set from the 80s or 90s at all (I already spent $750 to get 17 shows that sit on my shelf next to the 13 good ones, with the exception of 1979 and few Feel Like A Strangers). As far as im concerned, Rhino already has my contribution to that period. If it HAS to happen (80s /90s box), I hope it's not until well after the bulk of '71 - '76 is released, as well as 1978 (up though April). Otherwise, it's just wasted time for me. But I doubt we'll see a box set from those years anyway, based on the length of time it took Spring '90 TOO, and Formerly Warlocks to sell out (and perhaps July 1978). Rhinos vault release marketing program is all about the quick flip. Anything that takes more than a year is a brick in the road to no more vault releases, at least on CD.

I was a high school kid when I scored a copy of Cornell University 77 --thanks to really cool people out there in the tape trading community. I hit my first show in 81 and by then this was already four years old, but old enough for me to really have an appreciation for this particular year. So when this was announced I pounced on it. I got all jammed up in the Barton Hall Website Order Release Debacle of 2017, but luckily was able to get my order through. So I am going to be a happy head in May when this and the Felt Forum show arrive. Oh and I just dug up my original copy of this tape on a TDK SA90. I wish I knew who the original taper is, but let me just send a hearty thank you to all the tapers. You are a wonderful tribe! and you have my undying respect and gratitude.

I haven't read all the responses, but see that (not surprisingly) the subject of the cost of the box and whether it is "fair" has come up. My impression from what I've read in the past and from Dave's talk is that they had to buy the masters from whomever had them. If that is the case, and especially with all the hype, er interest in, the Cornell show, that price tag, with years of lawyers wrangling, could have been pretty substantial. I'm not sure if that has been mentioned here or even if it's true.

Rhino has come in for a fair bit of disparagement on these forums, but I have always found them to be the ones who bail out the dead.net folks when things go a bit sideways. In the last 18 months I've engaged in a major update to my inventory, often paying semi-ridiculous amounts to 3rd parties for several of the out of print box sets, as well as picking up stuff at the dead.net site (this can happen to a 71-78 concert goer who faded in and out of infatuation, but is now fully back in). The days when I could pick up the newest Dick's Picks as it came out seem downright quaint in light of today's web frenzy. The folks at Rhino have always come through, whether emailing clean digital files from online purchases, or even replacing a disc from the out of print May 77 box 7 years after its release, and doing so in a prompt and helpful manner. It's difficult to realize that getting an order through for this new box took 50 (yeah, I kept count) attempts, and that it worked only after a break, and then finding that the dead.net site redirected to Rhino. Warner records is not a small outfit, and it's pretty amazing that they and the dead folks didn't anticipate that this announcement would generate the overload that it did. But, thanks to Rhino, I have a confirmation of order, and will make do with Rob Eaton's mix from archive.org until the primo sound version, with other shows, arrives. This will make the Spring 77 tour, with the all of the releases on Dick's Picks, May 77 box, and single shows a strong second to Europe 72 for most covered tour, I suspect. May the music never stop....

Whoa. People are riled up. Happy. Sad. Emotional. Focused. Passionate. Sounds about right for this clan. The Love for the music is what drives The Fervor. And that is righteous. People In Charge will ensure the initial snares get worked out - we hope - and it's not lost on The Community what hardships and mental coasters were endured. But, Have Faith. Odds are, it will work out given demand, and Love. Sixtus

After initially getting thrown off the site after getting to checkout, went back in half hour later and got through to checkout and got my confirmation email, box set and Cornell vinal set. Somewhat surprised about Cornell release, excuse has often been that everyone already had a great copy, which I do, have had it for 20 years, soundboard quality. Still interested to see what they could do on official release as well as the other shows. Already have good copy of Buffalo, not others. Always thought that Baltimore later that month was great as well, great copies of that all around. Regards. Ned.

Ok. Got my order finally in and confirmed through the revised interface. After 7 hours. So all is well for me in the world. That does not make this ok. It does not make it ok for anyone who spent hours today getting an order through. That was not excusable after all the previous fiascos. It should have been avoided. And for anyone who tried to get this done today and gave up, and ends up getting shut out, it will not be ok. My bloodpressure will go down (truth to tell it didn't really go up much, if I had to buy via digital on release I would have been fine) but this really has been bad. I still have more GD music than I will ever really listen to again in this life (including the two of these shows that matter most to me). Back to Rockin the Rhein and my favorite Dark Star segue. Enjoy all.

I always hoped that they would do a box set of this period, right up there with their best. The shows that resulted in the Double Skeleton album were consistently great, Filmore East and West, Manhattan center, etc. The greatest Morning Dews, Hard to Handles, Truckins, Cumberlands, Bobby McGees, Cold Rain, etc. Jerry on a Strat, love that sound and tone, pure before all the fancy guitars, makes it ring and sing. I always thought their most intense, high energy jamming, nothing quite like it after those April Fillmore shows, always thought they were down a notch in energy from then forward, not that I still didn't love the stuff, just different. Please stop. There's more than a hint of humour to our self-commiseration over the events of this afternoon. Personally, the surprise in this set with be New Haven. I've no recollection of my acquaintance with this show, though my notes indicate having listened to the Wallwork transfer back in 2011, with particular attention to that 18-minute Sugaree in the TWO slot - no first set warm-up required this night! I've opened the Taper's Compendium and the attendant review describes this rendition as "one of the longest and finest ever performed", to include "three coruscating jams, each quite different in character". I had to look up "coruscating": it means "flashing; sparkling" or "brilliant or striking in content or style", which is pretty much Spring 77 in a nutshell! 2nd set: 23min ScarFire and a St.S during which JG "studiously ignores several attempts at intervention by other members of the band [to transition back to vocals]"...April showers bring mad May improvisations...

Yup. Finally worked. Looks like they set up the gratefuldead.warner site on its own little server, then rate limited how many connections it would take at once. So each time you had to reconnect to get to the next phase of ordering, it was a brand new lottery to see if you'd be "administratively prohibited." Hell of a way to run an airline. Rhino did refuse the credit card I'd been entering in the almost-made-it runs though. Wonder if they tainted it somehow.

Kate's post got me thinking about 77 Sugaree's and I've always been big on Buffalo, and oh hell.. Cornells pretty goddamned good even if its overplayed. My mojo is rising just writing this post.. I'm happy with what we have, and knowing theres hundreds of reels yet to be released, some of which are likely not documented makes my blood boil a bit. We were lucky to be on the board this morning before the email went out. My order sailed through unimpeded. I gotta say, how the hell did something this good happen - that the most incredible band changed so much from year to year to provide such a varied palate, then taped most of it to where it could be Norman-ed and released with such fidelity? Pinch. Sometimes good shit just happens.

Bravo brother.. Just like back in the old days when you had to go to the venue (or local mall) and camp out to get tickets. Awesome... you stayed up all night to get this box. Awesome man.. just had to comment.

Dave's 21 and 22 from these returned Bettys. I bet they've got Capitol Theater 1971, and that will be a big box for next year for my guess. Sorry 80s guys, maybe they will make 23 from the 80s or 90s, because it sounds like they're really going to capitalize on the return of 100 shows worth of Bettys. They have to put the work into restoring these tapes anyway, so I'm betting a lot of 70s stuff is coming.

First off dont take my questions and requests as being ungrateful or complainiing in any way, i am thrilled that we are getting such a great boxed set. LOVE IT. Subscribe to the series and love all the boxed sets. BUT Where is 5/4/77?????? Is it not in the vault? A second set sbd does circulate. Is it just a case of not having a complete sbd? Obviously they dont want to put an incomplete show in a boxed set. But maybe a future bonus disc for daves picks series??? Just curious if anybody knows any more background on such a great show, that i wish would get an official release. Next question...when are we getting 1-22-78?

Funny how heads be crashing the website and freaking out. Yeah, me too, but it all worked out this evening. Barton Hall was my first "Soundboard" bootleg, and it HOOKED me. I don't recall having to mention that too many times before dudes be slapping Buffalo and Boston tapes in my hands. And the Race Is On, and There Goes Face Melt!

Had to go away from 4pm PST till a half hour ago, and luckily they didn't sell out while I was away. I better put my confirmation number in a safety deposit box. Now let's see if they can ship them out without a snafu.
