WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

    NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

    BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

    CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

Can't believe this thread is still going. I can never seem to find it from the regular website as they are obviously pushing only the All music edition. But today I received the almanac email and bang there is a link to this thread. Kayak guy thanks so much for that Meat Puppets link. Wow that band knocked me off my ass when I was 17. Was at a lower east side NYC club called the World when I figured I would check out the second floor of this club. I hear a 3 piece rock band performing for roughly 30 people. There were several hundred on the lower level drinking and dancing to a DJ playing bad 80's dance music. The Meat Puppets were punk rocking their way through some classic rock covers and playing many of their own repertoire. All I really knew was classic rock. These guys were young and fierce. It was musically speaking a life changing moment for me at the time. Even at 17 I was sick of FM radio playing the same 60's and 70's songs over and over. I thought rock was dead or at least simply coasting along. After that show I went out and bought the MP's current EP release Out My Way and MP 2. Then I picked up the obviously GD inspired Up On The Sun and immediately knew these guys were crazy talented and inspired by all the greats before them. Then of course I heard the Replacements and others in the underground scene. A few years later we had the last great rock music era courtesy of Nirvana and other great indie acts. So discovering the Meat Puppets and the Grateful Dead a year earlier restored my faith in rock. The 80's was the era of drum machines and synths but there were still a few bands playing real music. You just had to poke around to find them. Thanks for letting me vent all that out though I probably won't be able to find this thread again. Really psyched to get this box in a few weeks. Happy Passover to everyone. I remember back in the day it always coincided with Spring east coast tours. Mom I really need to miss the Seder. Why? I need to be at Nassau Coliseum or further out in Worcester Mass to see the Grateful Dead.

I will relish the NRPS with Jerry on pedal steel, he was much too hard on himself, questioning his proficiency and claiming he needed to practice too much to be good...his pedal playing with the Riders and early 70's Dead was extraordinary...Bobby couldn't play slide for shit, but he did...and the world is a better place for it as well as Jerry's pedal steel...

funny you should ask ;) Looks like a slow night here at the kiddies table. LMA is just so cool it NEVER ceases to amaze me. For the past 10 years, when i go to clubs shows and meet the "vintage" bands, i always lobby for LMA and tell them to check out the GD section and they could have the same thing because it's filled by the rabid fans and the tapers themselves, all they have to do is approve being on there, the rest is automatic. a couple of bands that have shown up eventually are Butt Hole Surfers, Meat Puppets and i'm still working on Mission of Burma ;) Just taking a stroll through the Pups section, which is getting more robust each time i check, i see this gem from the original drummer who no longer tours but runs their archives. Meat Puppets Live at Highlights Of 1985 on 1985-01-01 Uploaded by Derrick Bostrom on 10/22/2015 Its a 41 track best of 1985 that you can download in lossless flac, it's sick. It doesn't have Franklin's Tower, but it's got everything else. great palette cleanser stuff, lots of fun and part of the 1980's country punk movement that was similar to the spirit of the GD in 1970. try it out its FREE. https://archive.org/details/meatpuppets1985-00-00/03CommunicationBreakd… By the way the new Meat Puppets drummer is the son of Doug Sahm who was the opening act on the "experiment with horns" tour in 1973. This is the night before the experiment began, so no horns here, but it does have Keith singing deep in the 2nd set. Just me and the crickets here tonight.Working my way through 1970 it really makes one appreciate the foresight of Bear in recording and keeping all the tapes of the shows he was doing. Spring 1970 he's off the tour, after the January New Orleans Bust described in Truckin and the virtual vault goes SBD vacant, with AUDs now serving as place holders and reference points in the year. This is the part of the real Vault i would be interested in asking Dave about, 1970. With the return of the Betty's it gets easier to plot future releases for the 1971-79 years, but 1970 is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle that holds the most promise for unknown goodies to be found next. They go from Ballrooms and Festivals in 1969 to college Gyms and auditoriums, the tapes are primitive, the decks had auto level and was in the time before tapers knew that when they were chatting it was being recorded too. Great story about this one. https://archive.org/details/gd70-05-03.aud.goldman-sirmick.20852.sbeok… Rhino has already released most of the prime dates from this period already, from what i can tell. A super duper deluxe Bears Choice/ Dick's Pick 4 box with all of the Fillmore East Feb 70, early and late 11th, 13th & 14th Normanized would be a special pleasure. The June Fillmore West 1970 look ripe for a set and have seen some limited release as bonus material. Tomorrow morning will be back to working on the AUDs with this classic AUD recording that was a mainstay of cassette trading in the 70's in much worse sound. i'll skip the NRPS, but you don't have to. That would be so cool, but wouldn't that really cheese off the people that got denied on this box and now have the mysterious Music Only version as their only option? I think this page is now dead and all the official action will be on the Music Only page. According to the banner there's still less than 500 copies left and it's been sold out since a couple days after the preorder.

After the total meltdown and quick abandonment of this page to the All Music page i think it's unlikely we'll get anymore here. It is sold out, why waste any further effort on it, the All Music is the one they are pushing now, the unlimited, folio packaged one. I suspect we see more on the folio version before we get more on this one. Maybe after it ships, but until then there is no reason to do anything and remind people of preorder day or payment cancellations. Though Dr Rhino seems to really get off on the unboxing videos, i like the white gloves he uses.

Rhino has come in for a fair bit of disparagement on these forums, but I have always found them to be the ones who bail out the dead.net folks when things go a bit sideways. In the last 18 months I've engaged in a major update to my inventory, often paying semi-ridiculous amounts to 3rd parties for several of the out of print box sets, as well as picking up stuff at the dead.net site (this can happen to a 71-78 concert goer who faded in and out of infatuation, but is now fully back in). The days when I could pick up the newest Dick's Picks as it came out seem downright quaint in light of today's web frenzy. The folks at Rhino have always come through, whether emailing clean digital files from online purchases, or even replacing a disc from the out of print May 77 box 7 years after its release, and doing so in a prompt and helpful manner. It's difficult to realize that getting an order through for this new box took 50 (yeah, I kept count) attempts, and that it worked only after a break, and then finding that the dead.net site redirected to Rhino. Warner records is not a small outfit, and it's pretty amazing that they and the dead folks didn't anticipate that this announcement would generate the overload that it did. But, thanks to Rhino, I have a confirmation of order, and will make do with Rob Eaton's mix from archive.org until the primo sound version, with other shows, arrives. This will make the Spring 77 tour, with the all of the releases on Dick's Picks, May 77 box, and single shows a strong second to Europe 72 for most covered tour, I suspect. May the music never stop....

Whoa. People are riled up. Happy. Sad. Emotional. Focused. Passionate. Sounds about right for this clan. The Love for the music is what drives The Fervor. And that is righteous. People In Charge will ensure the initial snares get worked out - we hope - and it's not lost on The Community what hardships and mental coasters were endured. But, Have Faith. Odds are, it will work out given demand, and Love. Sixtus

After initially getting thrown off the site after getting to checkout, went back in half hour later and got through to checkout and got my confirmation email, box set and Cornell vinal set. Somewhat surprised about Cornell release, excuse has often been that everyone already had a great copy, which I do, have had it for 20 years, soundboard quality. Still interested to see what they could do on official release as well as the other shows. Already have good copy of Buffalo, not others. Always thought that Baltimore later that month was great as well, great copies of that all around. Regards. Ned.

Ok. Got my order finally in and confirmed through the revised interface. After 7 hours. So all is well for me in the world. That does not make this ok. It does not make it ok for anyone who spent hours today getting an order through. That was not excusable after all the previous fiascos. It should have been avoided. And for anyone who tried to get this done today and gave up, and ends up getting shut out, it will not be ok. My bloodpressure will go down (truth to tell it didn't really go up much, if I had to buy via digital on release I would have been fine) but this really has been bad. I still have more GD music than I will ever really listen to again in this life (including the two of these shows that matter most to me). Back to Rockin the Rhein and my favorite Dark Star segue. Enjoy all.

I always hoped that they would do a box set of this period, right up there with their best. The shows that resulted in the Double Skeleton album were consistently great, Filmore East and West, Manhattan center, etc. The greatest Morning Dews, Hard to Handles, Truckins, Cumberlands, Bobby McGees, Cold Rain, etc. Jerry on a Strat, love that sound and tone, pure before all the fancy guitars, makes it ring and sing. I always thought their most intense, high energy jamming, nothing quite like it after those April Fillmore shows, always thought they were down a notch in energy from then forward, not that I still didn't love the stuff, just different. Please stop. There's more than a hint of humour to our self-commiseration over the events of this afternoon. Personally, the surprise in this set with be New Haven. I've no recollection of my acquaintance with this show, though my notes indicate having listened to the Wallwork transfer back in 2011, with particular attention to that 18-minute Sugaree in the TWO slot - no first set warm-up required this night! I've opened the Taper's Compendium and the attendant review describes this rendition as "one of the longest and finest ever performed", to include "three coruscating jams, each quite different in character". I had to look up "coruscating": it means "flashing; sparkling" or "brilliant or striking in content or style", which is pretty much Spring 77 in a nutshell! 2nd set: 23min ScarFire and a St.S during which JG "studiously ignores several attempts at intervention by other members of the band [to transition back to vocals]"...April showers bring mad May improvisations...

Yup. Finally worked. Looks like they set up the gratefuldead.warner site on its own little server, then rate limited how many connections it would take at once. So each time you had to reconnect to get to the next phase of ordering, it was a brand new lottery to see if you'd be "administratively prohibited." Hell of a way to run an airline. Rhino did refuse the credit card I'd been entering in the almost-made-it runs though. Wonder if they tainted it somehow.

Kate's post got me thinking about 77 Sugaree's and I've always been big on Buffalo, and oh hell.. Cornells pretty goddamned good even if its overplayed. My mojo is rising just writing this post.. I'm happy with what we have, and knowing theres hundreds of reels yet to be released, some of which are likely not documented makes my blood boil a bit. We were lucky to be on the board this morning before the email went out. My order sailed through unimpeded. I gotta say, how the hell did something this good happen - that the most incredible band changed so much from year to year to provide such a varied palate, then taped most of it to where it could be Norman-ed and released with such fidelity? Pinch. Sometimes good shit just happens.

Just now ordered it and it went through with no problem. Whew, that was close! lol I tried earlier today and forget about it, the site kept crashing over and over again! lol...I figured i'd give it a rest and try later in the night after the frenzy calmed down. Whew , glad it's over , I can rest easy now.

It's 5.30am in Sweden and about one hour ago I finally got mine. I had gone to sleep but one of my cats woke me up, as she does every now and then. So I made an atempt to order through my mobile phone, while still in bed . I had to fill in my card number several times but then finally the purchase went through. Thank you very much! When I downloaded the digital single, it said ten left to go. Micke Östlund, Växjö, Sweden

This has to be the "Big News" Dave hinted at during his DaP 21 talk. It is BIG NEWS and i grabbed my copy now before they are all flown. It's going to be an EPIC Summer 2017.

Bravo brother.. Just like back in the old days when you had to go to the venue (or local mall) and camp out to get tickets. Awesome... you stayed up all night to get this box. Awesome man.. just had to comment.

Dave's 21 and 22 from these returned Bettys. I bet they've got Capitol Theater 1971, and that will be a big box for next year for my guess. Sorry 80s guys, maybe they will make 23 from the 80s or 90s, because it sounds like they're really going to capitalize on the return of 100 shows worth of Bettys. They have to put the work into restoring these tapes anyway, so I'm betting a lot of 70s stuff is coming.

First off dont take my questions and requests as being ungrateful or complainiing in any way, i am thrilled that we are getting such a great boxed set. LOVE IT. Subscribe to the series and love all the boxed sets. BUT Where is 5/4/77?????? Is it not in the vault? A second set sbd does circulate. Is it just a case of not having a complete sbd? Obviously they dont want to put an incomplete show in a boxed set. But maybe a future bonus disc for daves picks series??? Just curious if anybody knows any more background on such a great show, that i wish would get an official release. Next question...when are we getting 1-22-78?

Funny how heads be crashing the website and freaking out. Yeah, me too, but it all worked out this evening. Barton Hall was my first "Soundboard" bootleg, and it HOOKED me. I don't recall having to mention that too many times before dudes be slapping Buffalo and Boston tapes in my hands. And the Race Is On, and There Goes Face Melt!

Had to go away from 4pm PST till a half hour ago, and luckily they didn't sell out while I was away. I better put my confirmation number in a safety deposit box. Now let's see if they can ship them out without a snafu.
