WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

    NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

    BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

    CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

I read the the poster's comment about someone never having heard the studio version of TS . . .. And, yes, it is epic. . .. The suite part is fantastic. Furthur performed the full suite studio version many times and absolutely nailed it! Those tricky transitions. . .. The dramatic crescendos. . .. Epic stuff. Fine lyrics. Mythological images and characters. Well done Robert Hunter Sir.

Agree on the 12/28/79 Sugaree. If the riding mower wasn't out of fuel, I'd go back and reword that last post to read something like.. Sugaree is one of my favorite first set tunes and Spring 77 was a high water mark for this song onstage. Clearly there were a few high water marks for this song over the years. That reads better. Like rgergelis, there's a few I'm very fond of but cannot remember the exact dates. In the early 80's Jerry was making this very cool inflection point during the verse, "...how come you lay awake ALL night long" that I really like. I want to say it was circa 81 or so, perhaps around the Essen W. Germany show. Its about the same period Althea was very strong too. Lots of good ones to pull from. I also enjoy the version on the Winterland 74 Bonus Disc, its one of the few Sugaree's we have on video out there. oh.. below lists the shows where Sugaree was played at the Omni. I hope this narrows your search, rgergelis. 12/12/73- The Omni - Atlanta, GA 04/03/90- The Omni - Atlanta, GA 03/03/92- The Omni - Atlanta, GA 03/27/95- The Omni - Atlanta, GA

    Question Re: epic Sugarees
I had a cassette of a SBD from the Omni Atlanta, late 70's or early 80's believe Sugaree was second song of first set, but since archive link here shit the bed, I have no frame of reference,my deadbase was stolen a while back, it was like 18 minutes and it smoked...any help on the date would be appreciated. My brain is telling me April 3rd, but it's foggy at best....Working on digitizing my stash... Thanks in advance...

The version that opens the show from Road Trips Volume 3 Number 1 12/28/79 is a monster. Many in the early '80's could be considered all-timers.

I fear for my life when I post at that other place. :D I got to thinking about To Terrapin last night.. I forget who posted the details, but they were correct.. it was an impromptu release to create some hype around Spring 1990. But if it does have a best ever Sugaree (as we've already seen that's subject to interpretation).. that's reason enough for me for it to get some basking time in the sun. Sugaree is one of those classic Garcia Hunter songs, part of the foundational bedrock of the GD's song cannon. I've said it before.. I arrived to this party for the playing and jamming.. but I stayed because of the songs, the song writing and their meaning. Sugaree is one of my favorite first set tunes and Spring 77 is probably where it reached its high water mark on stage. Knowing what we know now (that all the tapes for the entire spring tour have been returned to the vault).. I wonder what the remaining 77 releases will look like. I suspect the sound is good enough to warrant box set, perhaps Plangent Processing treatment in addition to getting the Full Norman, but after this box they are a bit spread out. I guess time will tell....

First, completely concur with the 3/18/77 Sugaree assessment. This probably flies under the radar at bit, but as others have noted it is a great read. The extended Terrapin that night is special too as others have noted. And, KeithFan - I was floored when I read you hadn't really listened to the Terrapin Station from the studio album proper. This is an absolute monster and you MUST go listen. It will put everything into context for you in terms of the song, the Suite, the lovely choral chanting and brass toward the end. IT's EPIC!!!! ALSO, Jimbo, the new Avatar is just exactly perfect. Well done. And yes, I would trust Mrs. Sixtus with the keys over me on most days. And good to know: no plow needed; the 70 degree weather at the start to the past weekend took care of every last snow pile. Finally, my Dark Star Today has been 2/14/68 (so far). Although a shorty, it's an early goodie. And then take me to the cleaners with that epic Alligator (aka the majority of which is pulled onto the Anthem of the Sun). I've really only been listening to the 2/14 show very recently, and i find it intriguing how they happened to splice up this Alligator for 'Anthem' - I assume to fit on an LP side. But is also does meld into a kind of giant epic Alligator jam, which one might not necessarily know was all spliced together at first glance/listen.... Oh, and eyes43 - that Watkins Glen jam of which you speak - you may or may not be aware, but a good portion of this was actually released officially several years ago as part of one the first big era-spanning box sets. I had never sought it out in it's native context though, so that's cool to see. Just prior to around 14 minutes in there, there's a little section that almost has a proto-Franklin's Tower feel that carries along pretty well. Happy Week, All Sixtus

im sure you have all heard this many times, but this (jam > wharf rat), from the sound check at the grand prix racecourse, Watkins Glen, actually 7/27/74, the night before the summer jam festival (7/28/74 with the allman brothers and the band)...it is incredible! this is one phil heavy and very tasty jam, into a nice wharf rat. here is a direct link on relisten: http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1973/7/27-1/jam-wharf-ratthe whole sound check is great, minus the few cuts and bumps, but what an amazing thing to have actually been there...i can only imagine! definitely use your headphones! im not sure if this link will take you to a playable spot, as it doesnt seem to, on my iphone, but if you do not yet have it, and you do have an iphone, you must get the relisten app...there you can easily bring it up, and checkout the whole sound check. if the link above does not take to you a playable page on your phone, it will on your laptop. the "fire jam" inside this jam, is nice, real nice! so maybe it should be (jam > fire jam > wharf rat)! an excellent half hour! and while i am at it....as i do every now and again, tonight i had to give the final "so many roads" from the very last GD show, a watch and listen, as a pro-shot video of the entire song, is on youtube. yeah, yeah, i know its 95, but this particular "so many roads", if you were there, you must remember it! it was amazing, and jerry just keeps pushing from deep down to belt this one out. if you can watch it without tears...well...heres the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sFyRQPraJ8 "the kids they dance, and shake their bones!"

Well maybe competence and thoroughness should be considered in hiring web designers. Still huge blood pressure raising problems and frustration in ordering. There should be a health warning against older people ordering; I wonder if anyone trying vainly to order for the 49th time dies in the process. credit cards are impossible to use since a name on the credit card is required, but the designer failed to provide a space for the name! Only alternative was pay pal, which seemed to have gone thru, but then I received a notice from Rhino of payment failure. Then I got a confirmation of the order from Paypal, but not Rhino. God knows if I have succeeded in ordering this box set, but I should know too. What a mess. I give up.

After several failed attempts to buy this box in the first few hours that it went on sale, I gave up and waited until the next day. In the early morning hours on Friday, I was successful. It's probably will arrive about the dame day as Dave' Picks 22. I think the $139.98 is a fair price, but Rhino/Warner Music Group should give registered users of dead.net a discount of free shipping, and guests should pay that shipping charge. Add my state's sales tax, and the total amount is almost $15 more than the list price. These are great shows and I'm glad the original tapes finally found their way back to the Grateful Dead vault and that these 4 shows were released.

Like the Orpheum 1976 Dave's Picks 4 CD set, similar result with 5.4.77, probably pegged for 2018 subscription with bonus This announcement was pretty obvious, only thing in question would it be a box set of Winterland March 1977 or May 77. Primo stuff Returned GD reels also have some more from late 1979 and Fall 1980 ~ Brent era Dave's Picks 21 sounds amazing, can't wait to hear the December 1971 recordings Dave's Picks 22 ? How about 10.29.77 ? That one is really high energy. Also would like 11.6.77 OR an offering from the Pacific Northwest run September 1977 - October 1977. Future Box set after May 77,,,, bring on the BCT run from August 1972 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The returning. I hope BCJ got a little slice of the pie on this, she deserves it. I don't know the inside story, but it seems right. I saw the tweet from Rolling Stone and snuck in under the gun, about 5 mins before the official email went out. Then all hell broke loose, and the site was flumuxed till last night. I'm surprised this isn't sold out yet. Looking forward to getting the box a day or so after my birthday, May 4th. Buffalo is the one for me. Can't wait to hear that Peggy-O and The Music Never Stopped from that night. Just pure swing perfection. I wonder if they did anything to the time between songs for Cornell. Aren't there some fairly long pauses? Also, that 2nd disc of Buffalo is a little weak, guess they couldn't fit everything on 2 discs.

Why do I have to log into Dead.net and then when I pre-order it takes me to Rhino.com to start the process over - and not only that but I have to provide all of my contact info - which Dead.net already had on file. Whatever idiot designed Rhino's ordering page should be taken out back and shot (probably someone's idiot nephew as someone said already). I already have to go to the DMV today and deal with them this just made my day so much "nicer"

my brother's family ordered the Dave's Pick subscription for me for Christmas, but instead of sending the confirm to them Rhino sent it to me so I knew what I was getting for Christmas. For some reason they are sending emails to an email address I no longer use - and hasn't been on file with GD for years. When I called Rhino about the issue they said they'd fix but it is February and so far no luck (oh and they sent the first Dave's Picks to my brother's address not mine). Top notch customer service.

To my ears, It sounds like Maybe Dave decided to throw in an audio patch so that for a few seconds the listener can get the reverb from Barton Hall on the sweet sweet part of the Garcia Lick, and I totally dig it, what sounds strange is how at like 9:35 it cleans up and sounds quiet. If I was betting man, and especially after listening to the Dave's Pick #20...As well as the Amazing quality Aud. recording of this show over at Archive.Org. Me thinks it is a few seconds of Audience Patch. Just wish the volume or the reverb would have lasted a little longer.

i would have tried to order another and then looked in my email, rhino.com webstore sent order confirmation, even though it looked like a fail, usually after order submit is complete,, it will go to an order summary with confirmation number. in this case it by-passed that and said my cart was empty... appearing as if it had crapped out at the end My opinion you guys should be fine, they will see your comments here and it would be nuttier than squirrel turds if they shut out any one that posted in the comments section. I get the feeling this is going to sell out before end of month So now that 5.8.77 is on vinyl ? will there be an RSD release in April ? really hope so,, and hope its from 1966 ! Okay, so this does feel like a bit of a cash grab considering the superb-sounding Betty Boards long available for the Godhead of Grateful Dead shows (father, son, and holy spirit; 5/7,8,9), but the slight improvements in mastering and the extra goodies make this one worthwhile. If you're like me and you already own all of the Spring '77 releases and boxed set that have come before, you might as well, might as well. I've always been partial to the Dick's Picks 29 shows as 'best of tour,' but nothing can beat the insane lysergic jamming on Barton's "Dancin' in the Streets" or "Row Jimmy." Take my money please.

Dang....that is a tasty list of reels, and among them is one of my all-time favorite shows, 6/11/76 - Boston Music Hall. I had emailed Dave about this one a few years back, only to have him state it sadly wasn't in the vault. I suppose we will now All have our own little salivations as we ponder the potential future of reels-to-ears. Happy Long Weekend Friday, All! Sixtus

My hope is that they left the banter between songs intact and did not eliminate it. Yeah, it makes the show a bit more choppy, but also adds to the appeal. IMO.

I had guessed it would sell out in 24 hrs, like the recent Daves Picks- but I think website issues might have hindered that. I really hope they still do an April RSD release as well... Dave keeps saying that "theres a lot of really cool stuff coming up" so Im hoping that he wasnt just referring to these releases. Not to sound ungrateful, I mean this is May 77 we're talkin about.

6100 left as of right now. Yesterday logic told me that a release like this would take at least days to sell out but I was in panic mode like everyone else non the less. I am glad that it has worked out for everyone and we finally have this release to look forward to. 20,000 may have been a better count for this one so I am telling all my friends to grab one while they can, but the other 3 shows may end up being released individually down the road. Happy Friday all

If you hit purchase and then your cart shows empty, it's empty because you successfully made the purchase.Do what mbarilla says and check your email. Also, be patient, the website is quite slow at moving to the next screen. That was part of the problem yesterday, people kept clicking on the buttons thinking that the first mouse click didn't go through, but it did, followed by additional clicks which overloaded the system. It was a self-inflicted denial of service attack. You can tell by people's posts from yesterday that were posted 3-5 times because they kept resending it, thinking that then first one didn't go through. At one point I had 8 Boxes in my cart because I kept hitting the add to cart button but wasn't getting a response, then all of a sudden had 8. Had to close my browser and delete the history to get rid of them.

Finally got mine. I was in full panic mode last night as I tried several times to order, got bumped off, out, you name it, it happened to me. I even tried calling this morning and got cut off!! Then low and behold came to work, got online, and got it!! It makes for a GREAT Friday. Thanks to Dead.net, Dave Lemiuex & the production crew, and last but certainly not LEAST, thank you Grateful Dead for letting us enjoy the long starnge trip!!

It is true, I have not listened to these shows. Why? 1977 has never been a go to year for me. I am hoping this box will change that. Now I do own the other 77 boxes. I have only listened to songs not the entire thing. Don't think I haven't tried. It's hard to describe, but after a few songs I feel the need to move on. My goal this weekend is to listen to one complete show either from Winterland 77 or The May 77. Any suggestions on which show? Thanks Now for something completely unrelated: I need to get my hands on the bonus disc from the Cleveland '73 that was included with Denver '73. That 40 + minute Dark Star is killer.

You should have received a confirmation screen at the time of your order and a follow up email. Another way to check is see if the charge has hit your credit card. At some point before things were directed to Rhino I seemingly made it through the order process - name, address, billing info, and submitted it - but after about 30 seconds the connection dropped before it looked like the purchase was completed, and my guess was nada zilch zip zero. Sure enough, after about 15 minutes of no email and not being able to reaccess the check out page I called my credit card company and there was no charge against it - the charge would have posted at the same time as a successful order. Once Rhino was involved I was able to lock a copy in! Thank you Rhino!

I also hope they do a RSD release, i was bummed they did not have on on black Friday. I would love for it to also be previously unreleased music. I would rather have the opportunity to get something that has not already came out in a recent box.

Aaaaaaaand now when I click on Add To Cart, I get a message from my computer telling me I should not continue to that site (the purchase page) because it will expose my computer to malware. This get more and more f'd up at every juncture. I'm sorry, Warner/Rhino/GD, I cannot proceed to put my credit card info into a site with malware. WTF?
