WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

    NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

    BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

    CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

I also hope they do a RSD release, i was bummed they did not have on on black Friday. I would love for it to also be previously unreleased music. I would rather have the opportunity to get something that has not already came out in a recent box.

You should have received a confirmation screen at the time of your order and a follow up email. Another way to check is see if the charge has hit your credit card. At some point before things were directed to Rhino I seemingly made it through the order process - name, address, billing info, and submitted it - but after about 30 seconds the connection dropped before it looked like the purchase was completed, and my guess was nada zilch zip zero. Sure enough, after about 15 minutes of no email and not being able to reaccess the check out page I called my credit card company and there was no charge against it - the charge would have posted at the same time as a successful order. Once Rhino was involved I was able to lock a copy in! Thank you Rhino!

It is true, I have not listened to these shows. Why? 1977 has never been a go to year for me. I am hoping this box will change that. Now I do own the other 77 boxes. I have only listened to songs not the entire thing. Don't think I haven't tried. It's hard to describe, but after a few songs I feel the need to move on. My goal this weekend is to listen to one complete show either from Winterland 77 or The May 77. Any suggestions on which show? Thanks Now for something completely unrelated: I need to get my hands on the bonus disc from the Cleveland '73 that was included with Denver '73. That 40 + minute Dark Star is killer.

Finally got mine. I was in full panic mode last night as I tried several times to order, got bumped off, out, you name it, it happened to me. I even tried calling this morning and got cut off!! Then low and behold came to work, got online, and got it!! It makes for a GREAT Friday. Thanks to Dead.net, Dave Lemiuex & the production crew, and last but certainly not LEAST, thank you Grateful Dead for letting us enjoy the long starnge trip!!

If you hit purchase and then your cart shows empty, it's empty because you successfully made the purchase.Do what mbarilla says and check your email. Also, be patient, the website is quite slow at moving to the next screen. That was part of the problem yesterday, people kept clicking on the buttons thinking that the first mouse click didn't go through, but it did, followed by additional clicks which overloaded the system. It was a self-inflicted denial of service attack. You can tell by people's posts from yesterday that were posted 3-5 times because they kept resending it, thinking that then first one didn't go through. At one point I had 8 Boxes in my cart because I kept hitting the add to cart button but wasn't getting a response, then all of a sudden had 8. Had to close my browser and delete the history to get rid of them.

6100 left as of right now. Yesterday logic told me that a release like this would take at least days to sell out but I was in panic mode like everyone else non the less. I am glad that it has worked out for everyone and we finally have this release to look forward to. 20,000 may have been a better count for this one so I am telling all my friends to grab one while they can, but the other 3 shows may end up being released individually down the road. Happy Friday all

I had guessed it would sell out in 24 hrs, like the recent Daves Picks- but I think website issues might have hindered that. I really hope they still do an April RSD release as well... Dave keeps saying that "theres a lot of really cool stuff coming up" so Im hoping that he wasnt just referring to these releases. Not to sound ungrateful, I mean this is May 77 we're talkin about.

Nice! kjohnduff1 We may need to import that phrase into the vernacular of this board. Vguy, shot over the bow. Just seeing if you were awake, no offense to you or others. I was at Phish '97 UNLV, then walked The Strip until 4 am. It was Thursday night so not very busy. Just strolling around with beer in hand, enjoying the lights in a post-show frame of mind kind of way. :) We got a 2 queen bed room on the 18th floor at MGM for $42 (it was a Thursday). In and out of Vegas in less than 24 hours....

Hey GD folks… it's been a long time since I have been engaged on dead.net. Here is what I recall about the Cornell 77 show. According, to deadbase, dupree's diamond news and the old Dat heads group it snowed that night which was unusual for the month of May in North America. So, that was a vibe factor; the Grateful Dead was a living organism that has a symbiotic relationship with not only the audience but the whole zeitgeist of vibe. As for the performance, the 1st set in my opinion is rather average, but the second set is very, very well played and feeds off the energy of the crowd. The "step back" banter from the band pleading with the audience not to rush the stage was great evidence of how much energy at the concert; something that didn't happen that much in most dead shows. However, many have claimed that this Cornell show is the best sounding Grateful Dead concert recording ever! Someone correct me if I'm wrong: the show was recorded at 7" 1/2" ips on 10 inch reels and Betty Cantor had a separate rig to record the show; this not a PA or monitor mix recording like so many other GD live recordings. I believe the Grateful Dead were using Sennheiser 421 for vocal microphones , tom tom mic's; and Garcia also used a Sennheiser 421 on his guitar cabinet as well. So, that's a lot of sound leakage but from a great microphone, not a Shure SM58 (industry standard) If you couple that with the gym like acoustics you can get a lot of hall with the recording. In fact, there was no way to avoid it with out severe isolation like in a controlled studio. It was also possible that Betty Cantor used some ambient microphones but to my knowledge that has never been confirmed. I also believe the Betty Boards from this era have been encoded with DBX, so it will be imperative that it should be decoded correctly for commercial remaster. Some of the early circulated transfers to PCM Betamax of Betty Board's have not be correctly decoded which yields a dull or "grabby" sound. Cornell was one that was correctly decoded which was why it sounds so good as a unauthorized recording. I recall sometime around 2003 or so, collectors had discovered the famous "interleave" recordings that gave us soundboard patches for the cuts on the master reels. Basically, the recordist ,Betty Cantor, would have a separate tape deck to start when the master reel is about to end during a performance; therefore, they could splice it in post production if need be. However, splicing two track live recordings was difficult back in the day but now with modern digital workstation it can be very possible to be seamless. The only caveat was those interleave recordings were on cassette and have not been confirmed to be a reel source so there could be a difference in sound quality for those moments and cuts. With all of this aside I am elated to learn the recording will be professionally mastered and released for everyone to enjoy. It really is a marvel show, but there are plenty other shows in this era that rival this show in earnest.

Broke out E-town to vibe '77. They smoke out of the gate with Promised Land, Highest energy, Phil lights a string on fire, fix it during the 1rst break and drop of a cliff into They Love Each Other, just a grimey groove. Been too long since the moonshine. No doubt, overall, the strength and depth of this year is hard to top. We'll all be beautiful together!

I ordered a couple copies of the cornell box and received a confirmation slip. HOWEVER, I can't seem to download the Scarlet>Fire. I checked my visa and it shows Warner Music but says it's "pending". I wouldn't question this except for all the BS around ordering when this thing launched. I'm a little worried that my order hasn't gone through due to the website problems, even though I got the confirmation slip. So, can anyone else download the Scarlet>Fire and has your credit card been charged? Or anyone have same experience? Thanks!

I had the same trouble. In your confirmation email follow the "View Order Status" link to the order page itself. From there you can click "view order" and scroll down to Items Ordered, then click the downloadable link! Hope this helps.

Of the 60 plus discs released in the Dave's Picks series perhaps my favorite is the DaP 18 disc with Comes a Time, Other One, Eyes, etc. Blows me away every time. I can't help but keep coming back to that single disc. What a release. I'm thinking we need more from that Orpheum run. A lot more

..buzzed and off point.. but I feel a bit proud (and quite buzzed) to see the term Full Norman come up. I'm fairly sure I was the first to use that term, I just thought it was funny. But deep inside, I know Jeffrey would be proud and honored. Ok.. that's it for me, at a certain point I either get horizontal or silly. Did someone say more ether? Or was either? Nevermind.. no bother. Perhaps a little of both.

you are wiser than I, since I always seem to go for the "silly" option. That "blow and post" breathalyzer device for the computer sure would have come in handy for me many times already ;) That said, I heartily recommend giving that 5/4/77 Comes A Time that claney speaks so highly about a spin tonight...listening to it right now, and I do believe it is BOAT. P.S. - You were the first to coin the phrase "the full Norman" treatment. Just for the record...

Ah yes, I'm afraid I'm not typically as wise as Jim either, which is one reason my main liquid vice now is strong and plentiful coffee. Well, and living in Massachusetts now has its perks. As for that 5/4 Comes a Time, glad it hits you like that too, Dantian. My first encounter with it was early in my trading experience, and Jerry's soaring solo elicited something with all the characteristics of a religious experience. It helped push me over the edge into contented fanaticism. Jim, I recall the Full Norman being your phrase too. Similarly I believe I coined "Normanize" quite a few years ago, so I know what you mean, it's fun to see it stick. PS - I'd love a Jeffrey Norman "seaside chat" - or "studio chat" - in which he talks about the process of working on these shows - I would geek out on stuff like "and then, to fill in that gap, we tracked down so-and-so's audience recording, and we cleaned it up by doing X, and we gave him a free box set for use of his aud patch..." etc...

Is this show BETTER than 5/8?!!!!!!! That Playin>Comes A Time>Playin is sublime and the Bob & Donna duet on LLR is a tear jerker plus the Estimated is powerfully played. IMHO I give 5/4 a higher rating than 5/8 I've been touting that one since the early days of dead.net RELEASE IT TO THE MASSES perhaps as DaP 23!!!! It's Presidents Day play DEAD!!!!!

My card was! charged pretty much right away, and when I checked yesterday as well... but as of this morning? the charge is not showing and my balance has been reimbursed? I did check my order number and everything appears to be ok, but at least right now, the charge has been taken off... odd? I should add, my card is a debit/credit card. I can run it either way, and I just add X-number of dollars at the beginning of each month, and that is what i have to spend, so not a true credit card in that sense, if that would make a difference?

Mornin' rockers! I just tried to order another box, thinking it would make a very nice Xmas present for a good friend of mine who cannot afford it. Dead.net says they are gone! So if that is the case, it took about 3.5 days. No surprise to those in the know. I can't wait for this. (as usual!) I have boots of 5/8 & 5/9 but have not heard the other two shows I attended the 2nd show of this tour, 4/23 in Springfield MA. so I feel like I got a good sneak preview to the fireworks to follow in less then two weeks in what was destined to be the fabled May '77 shows. I live in CT. but missed the two CT. shows, 5/5 New Haven and then 5/28 in Hartford. I was out in KS. visiting an army buddy @ Ft. Riley. My loss! Rock on

Decided against purchasing this box set, and I feel OK with it. I am in the "how much is enough?" phase of GD right now. I haven't even scratched the surface on the 30 Trips set. I will purchase the stand alone Cornell release. Hope everyone enjoys. I was listening to the first Spring 77 box over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed that. That Terrapin from Chicago is so good. I hope everyone enjoys it, and I can't wait to hear the feedback from everyone. Finally, I think the Buffalo Help>Slip>Frank can't hold a candle to the one from 6/9/77. To me, the Winterland Help-Slip>Frank is the one by which I judge all others. Enjoy everyone!!!

It's sold out - well, that solved my minor First World dilemma ("Should I buy a second box?"). Also, apologies to those who thought 15,000 copies was insufficient. As I say to my wife often: You were right! It evidently should have been something like 25,000 copies. I shudder to think what this will end up costing on eBay. David - thanks for sharing that interview with Norman - great stuff. I remember reading it, holy crap, 10 years ago! But, I was thinking in terms of a quick little video segments or liner notes for each release - the special technical issues which come up for each time. Dave L always covers the performance aspect nicely in his Seaside Chats, and sometimes liner notes; I would love additional "technical liner notes" with each release, if that makes sense. I'm a geek.

Barton Hall was the show that got me REALLY into the Dead. I listened to them a bit in high school, but when I was attending Cornell--for non-Grateful Dead related reasons--I met a girl that I fell hard for. She was a big Deadhead. In trying to become acquainted with her interests, she let me borrow a great deal of music. One of which was Barton Hall 77. I chose that one first for obvious reasons related to my alma mater and not because I knew anything specific about that particular show. I listened to it once. Then again. I went on an international trip a bit later and that's was the only music I brought with me. I listened to it over and over. When I got back to the States, I started devouring all the shows I could but always returned to Cornell--both in Dead music and in physical spacial geography. This girl and I got serious, but as my graduation approached we realized our lives were in very different places. We decided to part ways and I had to learn the hard way to let her pass by. Time has passed but my love for the Dead remains to this day. More time passed. I listened to the music play and the four winds blew me back to Ithaca. This is where I call home now. Part of me always knew this would be my home. I just had to leave and come back to realize that. Better late than never, ehh? How much of that is due to the Grateful Dead? I have no idea. I listen to this show and no matter where I am, I can picture walking up Libe Slope with the clocktower at the top. I picture the War Memorial behind me with Cayuga Lake further down the hill. I can picture Sage Chapel and the Johnson School of Management. I picture the statues in the Arts Quad and the Law School. I picture Cascadilla Gorge and Taughannock Falls. McGraw Tower is my Franklin's Tower. TL;DR-Barton Hall was my first and can always bring me home again. So I always ignore the overrated conversation regarding this show. I can feel comfort in this show. It reminds me of home. This is my one.

Don't stress about the credit card charge not showing on your account. When dead.net presells a box set, they run your card for an authorization to check if you have the funds, but do not actually charge the card until the box ships. Just make sure your card has funds ready for the charge in May!

My buddy who I went to the Cornell show with tipped me off to the release this morning-too late. Too bad-we had a great time and I would have liked to have the book. I have the show already in good quality and several other of the May 77 run but would still have liked the official release. Why only release 15000 copies when the demand is so high. Same with the Fare Thee Well shows-there were so many people that supported the Dead for so long and would have liked to have seen them one more time-why couldn't they have added 2 or 3 more locations and maybe kept the ticket prices down a little. For now I wish they would at least sell a good old skull and roses white tee shirt-my old one is getting kind of worn out after 40 years.

This is heartbreaking - $300 on ebay already!!!! bottom feeding scum order 10 copies and I get none. They should limit it to 2-3 copied per person at least. this sux! Left outside looking in! So for several days, I periodically tried to purchase "Get Shown The Light" and there's an issue with the website. Today, it's sold out. Is that true? Have scalpers/bots invaded the music purchase realm now? I certainly hope that there's a positive solution to this issue. Print more please!

Glad I got in on this. Thinking I should have grabbed an extra, but that's okay. I'm really curious about the details of the packaging and if it will be anything like the other epic May 77 box set, which is my favorite box set packaging from their 70s releases. At the moment it looks pretty basic and less involved than the July 78 set, but I'm hoping that changes. The book looks interesting (which is being released on 4/11/17): https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/150170432X/hnetreviews-20?dev-t… I hope they give the box set some laser cutouts and psychedelic look. I'll be watching for updates. Been raging out to the remastered matrix version floating around and totally loving it!!

I would keep checking back as it's often the case here that more become available. Of any show releases that I would expect to see sell out fast, Cornell and Buffalo are the most likely candidates next to 8/27/72, FW '69 and E '72. I was surprised when the Winterland '77 box became a hot commodity. If 2/13-14/70 had been released as limited instead of as a Dicks Pick, that too would have been in high demand. Same story with 3/29/90 and a few shows from TTATS. Seeing as a digital option will be available on the release day, resale prices for the actual box won't be as obscenely high as the FW '69 box. If and when tptb decide to re-release that one as a digital option, the reseller market will take a hit.

Thanks! And yes, in a way, I wish it stuck so i don't have to think about it in couple months... but, reading some of the post of folks getting shut-out... Really bummed for these guys, hope something can be done! 15,000 just doesn't seem right for this... and i don't know how many flippers bought this? I know that sometimes can be overstated, but?

I pushed the button "subscribe" on the order site (next to the "sold out" info) and was told that I was "already subscribed to this product", although I didn't place an order. Does anybody know what that means?

I screwed up by not calling on SAT and believing the email I got about 'patience' and order problems, I got shut out and feel like vomiting! Scalpers are selling them for $300 on ebay already!!!!!! 15,000 was too low for this one. so unfair. makes me want to boycott and just do archive from now on.I got shut out of FTW too, mail ordered and drew a cool pic and everything. The scalpers screwed us again

August West, This is a long shot, but my understanding is that Ebay sellers must list & offer a physical product, not a pre-order that is technically unavailable at the time they offer it. This happened with the Europe '72 Mega Box, the sellers offering pre-orders were kicked off the site & the boxes went back into the inventory. Plus, if enough multiple & false orders are added back into the Dead.net inventory, these unreserved copies may go up again as a batch with an email notice to the individuals who unsuccessfully tried to get a copy the first time after the main orders are accounted for. Again, just a shot in the dark but this was how I got a copy of the Europe '72 Box Set. Good luck & hope you get a copy, BG

That is a serious bummer but SpaceBro is correct more will probably become available as payment/shipping time draws near. Sometimes payments do not go through for whatever reason and more then become available. It is possible that some are deliberately held back and released. That happened with 30Trips. Also I noticed a wish list button or something on the ordering page which is probably like a waiting list. You might call customer service and ask to be put on a waiting list for when more become available. Good Luck!

In a way I'm glad this box sold out, this "SOLD OUT" ranks 2nd as the fastest sell out of a multi-disc box set unit after "Europe '72: The Complete Recordings" box.Was this release distributed evenly - one unit per order, with no 2nd or more orders from the same party? NO. That's the the way I would have handled it, *if* I had anything to do with Warner Music Group sales and distribution. I feel "lucky" that I was able to order a box. I feel sorry for the people who were shut out of placing an order. I have no doubt that there will be several cancelled orders before the May 5th delivery date, and perhaps there will be a lucky few folks that will get a 2nd chance to order one of those cancelled boxes. And for those who order one or more just to make a profit (100%) a little later, I don't have a kind word for you.

Well, apparently my Master Card is considered an invalid form of payment. I have no idea what that means, and though I emailed R/W (TPTB) twice, I never received a response, so I'm still "in the dark" on this matter. What I do know is my invalid form of payment was deemed valid for Dave's Picks subscriptions (2015-2017), the July 1978 box, various E-'72, Road Trips, Dicks Picks, and etc. going back to 2009. If there was something in the fine print about excluding those of us who had thus far not purchased any "Stealie" shot glasses, or Christmas ornament, then I'm afraid I missed it. At any rate, my loss, and sadly it feels like a big one. Should I ever find myself in need of am "S.Y.F." fanny-pack, or some "Dancing Bears" leg-warmers for the wife, I will most definitely seek them out via R/W (TPTB). Btw, none of this is meant as dig at Rhino/Warners, GDP, or anyone else for that matter, just needed to chime in as yet another "customer" who spent 3 days trying to order this set, only to be left out in the cold, and yes, it is indeed pretty chilly out here.Peace, G

FYI: Credit cards are now charged on purchase, not on shipping date. They don't do a pre-auth and then remove and re-add the charge as they used to. Plan accordingly.

Should I send them a message? as i mentioned, everything checks out in my order status fine! but on my Credit/Debit Card the charge is no longer there? Unless it is because it has a debit option?

Fennaro, I think you are wrong. I had a pending charge for the box from Thursday-Sunday. It is gone now. This was the same way the 30 trips box was handled. I believe July 78 was just charged. Owlshead, don't worry. I'm sure your order went through. If yours did not, neither did mine or many other people this has happened to.

Hmmm...maybe it's different for CC's and Debit Cards? My Debit Card charge is still there. It was also the case for my Dave's Picks sub this year that it was charged on order. Oh, well I guess we'll find out - I hope no one gets caught unawares. Also, in answer to the person who received an invalid card message, it could be that your expiration date is prior to May 5.

These transactions are pre-authorizations now, which expire after 5 days (longer for debit cards). The charge will not show up until the item ships. No worries.

I checked my past bank statements and it appears that at least for Dave's Picks 2017 Subscription and last years July '78 Box the charges showed up on my debit card approximately 3 days after I completed the preorder purchase. My current card expires prior to May 5 so I was concerned about the timing of the charge as well. Hopefully they'll just take their money now, but I'll probably worry till I have the box in my hands. I think that 30TATS charged at the time of shipping was due to the long lead time between ordering and shipping, but that's just a guess. Took me multiple tries to complete the order on Friday. Given the ordering difficulty and the rapid sellout maybe this is a good candidate for an "all music" release like they did with E'72.

Here's what it says: Once your order is placed, our system checks with your credit card company to confirm funds are available, this is an authorization only, not a charge. Authorizations will be removed in approximately 3-5 days depending on your financial institution. You will only be charged once your order ships If you use a debit card to pay for your order, please keep in mind that most items are billed when shipped and funds must be available in your account at that time.

It looks like the book is available independent of the box set and is currently available for preorder on another large retail website with a release date of April 11, 2017.
