    If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

    MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

    The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Cantor-Jackson soundboard recordings were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

    Dark Stars of Europe '72
    It's THAT time of year again as we all get the Europe '72 bug so I thought I would share this little post (ha ha, sarcasm) from-the-past regarding my takes on the Dark Stars from this superb tour. Since the first time I've shared this, I've updated with some 'second pass' notes. The whole reason I did this a few years back was to determine which Dark Star had the best 'Feelin Groovy jam', but what I actually got out of this exercise was a front-row-seat in Dark Star-ology. 4/8/1972 - Wembly Empire Pool, London - 32 mins; intense/fast paced first leg up til about 10 mins then returns to DS theme for 1st verse; spacey post-verse til ~17 min, then pace picks up for a few minutes, followed by a brief meltdown; additional spaciness around 24 mins followed by another full meltdown; interesting groove established around 28 min that has hints of Sugar Mag (into which it segues, flawlessly). No second verse. Second Pass Notes: Description above regarding the first leg is right on. Intense at spots; but not lost. Coherent, rapid jamming. Dominant energy. This one moves. Becomes introspective. Probing. But still dialed-in, all the way to the reemergence of the theme. Dark Star crashes. Maintains a serious, captivating groove, exemplifying their ‘leanness’. BTW, Phil is always playing lead. At 21:40, Phil brings an introspective groove; it’s brief. Intensity backs off; aforementioned spaciness sets in. At 28:10, MAGIC! Out it comes. Happy. Intent. Around 29:40 Bobby descends into Sugar Mag territory and off it goes into an inspired jam. Cueing in. Seamless transition > Sugar Magnolia. 4/14/1972 - Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, DK - 29 mins; loose first 10 mins not overly spacey; gets spacey around 11 mins; interesting groove establishes around 16 min to head into first verse w/interesting beat; heads off into intense nearly 7-minute jam inclusive of a very tight and fast Feelin Groovy jam; final 3 minutes are a meltdown. No second verse. 4/17/1972 - Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, DK - 31 mins; spacey opening to about 7:30 when first DS theme emerges leading to 1st verse at 9:45. Spacey post-2nd verse tries to take off but melts further around 19 min; returns to a partial groove around 24:30 and closes out with spaceyness in the last 2 mins. No second verse. 4/24/1972 - Rheinhalle, Dusseldorf, Germany - Split by Me & My Uncle; 26 mins 1st half, 14:30 second half. Spacey opening until about 8:45 where it coalesces and falls into first DS theme around 10:15 followed shortly by 1st verse with slow, sparse notes. Spacey feedback following verse until 15:45 and then picks up into an intense, fast paced jam for just under 2 minutes before it becomes dissonant again leading to major meltdown which eventually heads into Me & My Uncle with ease. Second half: spacey reintroduction persists until about 7 mins, where Keith leads-in with some piano phrasing and then the band follows into a tight fast paced jam where Jerry plays some lines back and forth as if in conversation with himself and then maintains an intense level effortlessly segueing into Wharf Rat. No second verse. Second Pass Notes: Keith seems eager, early. Loose on the Dark Star theme, but obedient. Until 3:40. Challenges emerge. Chaos results; morphs into our main character. Intensity billows and flows. Textures of a familiar theme emerge then drop into the theme proper for the verse. 15:45 is then where it’s at. Overdrive. Visiting that same, intense space and place. Melody hints, but never grasps. Keith is POUNDING! 17:37....dissonance. Then on to Me & My Uncle. Zero effort in the transition. Out of which comes spacey, tangentially melodic hints. Keith spills over the edge. Probing further. At 6:55, a Cautious Phil erupts into intense and inspiring jamming. The tone is there, the urgency. It SOARS! Then tumbles. Then rolls. Then lands upright into Wharf Rat. The transition into Wharf Rat is sooo buttery it melts. 4/29/1972 - Musikhalle, Hamburg, Denmark - 30 mins; spacey opening for ~5 mins, then enters a groove and Phil hints at the Feeling Groovy jam until it finally is joined by Jerry a minute later until about 8:00, then the floor drops out into space. DS theme appears at 14 min which leads to first verse. Spacey post-verse noodling leads to major meltdown, settling in at 22 mins with a fat, fast-paced Keith-led groove. Final 4 mins are spacey & lead to major melt #2, dropping into Sugar Mag as DS finally melts away. No second verse. 5/4/1972 - Olympia Theatre, Paris - Split by drums; 19 mins 1st half; 17:34 2nd half. Spacey opening til about 6 mins when fast paced jam kicks in until 11:20, slowing down then resurrecting the DS theme into the first verse. 4 mins of space leads into drums. Second half post-drums is very spacey until 7 mins, then kicks into overdrive with a very high energy jam leading to a phenomenal Feelin Groovy Jam for several minutes before settling into the second verse. DS dissipates into the Sugar Mag from E'72. 5/7/1972 - Bickershaw Festival, Wigan, UK - 19:49 mins; decent, coherent jamming for the first several minutes that congeals nicely around 8 minutes. Bottom falls out around 10 mins and leads to some light noodling, cymbal fills and space. DS theme emerges at 14:23 and heads into 1st verse. Space fills the air through the remainder of the song until it totally breaks down into drums. No second verse. 5/11/1972 - Rotterdam Civic Hall, Netherlands - Split by drums; 13:45 mins 1st half; 30:34 mins 2nd half; Opens with a light, airy jam that persists to congeal into a decent groove as it treads in and out of spacey phrasing. This settles into a mysterious sounding jam that grows with intensity without a return to the DS theme before dissolving into drums. Emerging from drums, Phil and Billy duel for 2 minutes before Jerry joins back in with some complimentary thoughts; the DS theme appears around 5 min followed by 1st verse. A few moments of spacey feedback give way to spacey noodling that devolves into a full blow chaotic meltdown, only to emerge around 19:30 into a very nice, fast paced groove that hints at Caution and PITB jams. This eventually dissolves and a light, sparse outro ends the song as it heads off into Sugar Mag. No second verse. Second Pass Notes: Following notes above, around 7:25 an introspective jam begins, slow-to-medium tempo, highlights of a tinkling piano accompany. 10:00, the interesting groove begins with Jerry repeating a run up and down, Bobby and Phil filling in behind him with Billy driving. This rolls until about 12:30 and then becomes dissonant preparing for a jaunt into drums. Following Drums.....Phil and Billy feel their way together before Jerry joins in around the 2 minute mark with some delicate lines. As it matures, it straddles the line of melodically jammy and somewhat introspective. Dark Star theme around 5:00 immediately followed by first verse. Space and total and utter devolvement ensue. Exploratory riff by Jerry right around 10:10 and eventually trails off....off into space....then, RIGHT ON!! 19:30! This sucker erupts into a full blown romp. It’s melodic, or at least semi-. Fast. Locked-in. Phil, Jerry, both leading. Keith, Bobby, Billy, even Pig, painting. Glorious, happy, awe. Almost Familiar. These are the best times, the chugging along into that almost identifiable territory but just out of affirmatory grasp. The hints at Caution; the hints at Playin’. Then Holy Intensity, 26:20, as Keith joins in to the tempo ablaze. No Caution. You, instead, melt; despite the Truckin’ intro references. And Phil teases the Bird Song bass line in there a few times before the end.... 5/18/1972 - Kongressaal, Muenchen, Denmark - 28:20 mins; almost 2 mins of noodling before opening notes from Phil; a loose jam ensues around the DS theme for the next several minutes and then decays. At ~9 min an interesting jam emerges, which eventually settles back into the DS theme and 1st verse around 14:30. The remainder of this DS is borderline chaos as it treads in and out of varying degrees of a meltdown until it settles into Morning Dew. No second verse. 5/23/1972 - The Strand Lyceum, London - 30 mins; Spacey opening minutes lead to tight fast paced jam commencing around 3:30 for two minutes and then it settles into another spacey jam digressing to almost…nothing. Billy and Phil then have a small duel until ~13:30 when the rest of the band fills back into a delicate groove which grows to into a jam reminiscent of the post-Truckin' foray from E'72 until about 17 mins, when they drop into the DS theme and 1st verse. Ensuing is additional delicate spaciness that transgresses into a frenzied meltdown madness, and eventually settles into Morning Dew. No second verse. Second Pass Notes: Open, airy, hinting DS theme but exploratory. Then it takes off, just before 3:00. We’ve arrived again. That groove. Familiar, but different. Still driving forward, with purpose. It chugs along the precipice until it aerates and flutters up and away around 6:12. Around 12:30, Phil and Billy are dooking it out and 60 seconds later Jerry joins in the fray. The mystery builds as we find that familiar glue. Meshing of instruments. The purpose, the groove. Phil hints at the Feeling Groovy jam, but no one bites. Then, the Dark Star Theme....light into ashes. 5/25/1972 - The Strand Lyceum, London - 34 mins, out of Wharf Rat. Strong opening with a groove almost from the beginning, no noodling around here in the first 7 minutes. Then turns very spacey until 15 mins when DS theme appears, and heads off into 1st verse. Post-verse finds a Billy, Phil, and Keith duel for several minutes. At 21 mins, Phil institutes a mellow Feeling Groovy jam, soon joined by the rest of the band until ~25 mins. Final minutes are dominated by space and then a monumental meltdown before heading off into Sugar Mag. No second verse. Second Pass Notes: Light, airy start; non-committal. But, probing. Building. At ~2:45, off we go once more. That chug. That place. We’re all going there, yet it’s as familiar as it is different. But it grooves! There’s that Truckin’ jam reference. The seed. This is THE SEED for the next nights’ magic; you can hear it being birthed on this night. Themes from the 5/26 post-Truckin are poking through the music tonight. Around 15 minutes....Dark Star theme.... ...mellow....crashes.....what follows is a three-way duel: Phil, Billy, Keith; HEAVEN. And fun. Then there it is...Feelin Groovy, All in. Melodic but on the fringe and exciting. Back to that familiar place, but this is a much looser and longer Feelin Groovy theme which then effortlessly morphs back into our familiar jammy space.     39 year anniversary of a great show at the Fox Theatre. One of the all time best Franklin's Towers (coming out of Drums of all things). There's a great sounding board circulating. Keith is nice and high in the mix for this show. If there are any questions about his contributions in '78, this show will dispel the rumors (catch his act on Brown-Eyed Women). I think that head-to-head, if DaP 7 & 15 had not been released, an April 1978 box set would have been better than July '78. Then Red Rocks could have been released as a Dave's Picks with Bonus Disc, to get 7/8 out there + hilights of 7/7. But the timing of the Betty Board recovery prohibited something like this. They could still put together a five show box from April, but with July 78 out there, it would take a few years. Which shows? I'm glad you asked: 4/8/78 "Last Train to Jacksonville with the Grateful Dead" 4/10/78 "Fox is Dead" 4/12/78 "Mad U.S. Blues" 4/16/78 "Ship of Fools" 4/19/78 "High Ohio" These shows are like 77 only they feature a lot of development within certain songs, as their live performances over time were an ever opening flower. The Wolf wails and sings and steamrolls as needed, so the entire rockabilly of the shows is a leg up on most of 1978, as they still maintain the tightness of '77.     Saw the Cornell 77 book today
    I was at Barnes and Noble this afternoon. Walking by their Dead Shelf, I saw 2 Cornell 77 books, I had to check one out, they were selling hard cover, 21 bucks. Lots of nice pics, most stuff I knew already, you probably would too but it is a great read. There is a chapter on Betty boards and how she had to sell them to keep from going bankrupt. The booktalks a lot about vids and how they related to songs. This book will answer a lot of questions and ask some too. Well let me put on my helmet on and go back to the mines!!! I will be back with a great new version of Barton Hall.BTW, I noticed 20 Betty Boards were taken from archives. See ya, Jim

    ... I've been in that predicament too. What I do, is invite someone to a show, with one stipulation, if they don't enjoy the show, they don't pay for the ticket. If they do, they pay. To this day, I've never been left holding the bag. What can I say? Guess I have good taste....

    Im not sure what to do, I bought two tickets for both shows in Austin next week, the person who was going with me bailed out, and my cousin who lives in Austin has no interest. Not sure if I am up to driving to Austin and back to San Antonio every night

    Mr. V - Was curious if you ever finished Jerusalem by Alan Moore? I wasn't familiar with him, but noted it when you mentioned his novel here a few months ago. Ended up grabbing it when I was looking for something different..I'm about 85% done and something different is an understatement. Guy must be a mad genius or something, to even think of this stuff. I alternate between loving it and hating it, with a good current of WTF the whole time. Anyways, just curious what you thought. Hope everyone has a good Sunday. Got done mowing and was listening to the Rare Cuts & Oddities 1966 release randomly. I grabbed that when I was first getting into them and it was not at all what I was expecting.     4/9/82 Rochester War Memorial, Rochester, N.Y.I agree with you, rgergelis. No, I was not there. The people I know who used to go with to shows always had a extra ticket or so, and they'd call me to see if I wanted to go to the GD show, so I didn't have to rely on the kyndness of strangers or (gulp) con-men/women. Plan, plan, plan ahead. Plant a head?

Idea!!! Remember it's ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!!!!! However with that being said I'd rather see this with a lower price like say $99.98.

I think the music only edition is a good move. For me, it's the music that matters and not the "stuff". This makes the music available to those who want it. This is too good to be confined within 15K boxes. The price? Well, I can only assume that there was a high price to pay to even get the tapes.

i'll be returning my "numbered" box set because whiners like west and his CAP posts- f all you freakin cry babys-ruin it for everyone-and dont say this from all the whiners complaining that didnt get in-rhino had this planned the whole time-i can't believe this crap-i'm done buying this crap-been spending just like you west-since the 90's-but when i miss out do i complain i like need a sucker in my mouth-and "my heart goes out to you" screw all you hippy $ussys-

Probably the mp3 edition will be $99.00 (or less), the lossless FLAC and other formats will be more expensive, but less expensive than the original (sold out) and this larger run ALL MUSIC EDITION.

They announced previously that they were releasing this as in digital formats this May, FLAC/mp3, so at the moment, this is a big fuck you to the people who pay attention and enjoy collectables. I'll be canceling my order. People who missed out could have gotten this digitally and burnt their discs. They had 3+ days to make their order. I'm done with the Grateful Dead's definition of limited edition. Bullshit!

I am highly sympathetic to those who missed out on the GSTL box. Obviously nobody predicted the Internet would break and cause some Deadicated Heads to be denied. Hope this never happens again, and hope those in need get remedied. When I first read about the release there were sparks and shocks. First shock was Cornell is being released. Second was a box with these three other upper deck shows. This was enough to make me feel faint and in need of a seat. I poked though further and was pumped that the 8th was a stand alone. Whaaaat...wait..vinyl? Sparks now flying for me now, a warm feeling hugged me like the sunshine did today and yesterday in the Northeast. Like others I spent more time than necessary making my order. Started thinking about this May 8th, the day I predict our presents will arrive; and I too drifted off into la la land. But, before all this goes down I will down load the FLAC GSTL box on the 5th. Sure the physical CD box will be nice when it arrives. Oh heavens to Betsy the vinyl sure will spin a haze of sonic brilliance. But nothing, nothing will sound as good as that high res download. This is by far and away what I am looking forward to the most. With these sparks, I will bast off...and might not return to Earth to check my mailbox on the 8th. Cheers!

Excellent, and thank goodness :-)I happened to be utterly skint the last three days. I'd have been happier still with Buffalo as a stand alone release, but this is good; it's on my Christmas list :-) Nice to see the scalpers take a cold bath too :-) Also, i hope Betty is getting her cut; if not, we ought to start a pledge page and make a contribution for each remastered Betty board we buy ... just a thought. yeehaaa!

Why are some people so mad that this got released as an all music addition? This all music addition does not detract from the awesome limited edition box set you have. The all music addition is the same price and doesn't come with all the extras. If you only bought the limited addition so that you can resell it for a bunch of extra cash (see the definition of a scalper), I can see how this probably lowers the resell value to only $250 instead of $300+. Boo-hoo. I got the limited box and am happy that I did. I'm also happy that anyone who missed out can now purchase this and hear the music. To be pissed about this is selfish and immature.

Well I guess it had to happen eventually. A promise broken just start make fillmore and stop kidding yourself make it indistinguishable from the original. People who wanted it had plenty of time to buy it and when it comes out buy the downloads after all "it's about the music" not owning cds in the beautiful slipcase. I was lied to Rhino

Guys, chill out. It is about the music not the box. I usually order most everything released, but for those things I missed, I'd be happy to take an "All Music Edition" (although it should be cheaper Rhino). Anyway, why should people who weren't on the scene with money in hand when Fillmore West was released have to pony up hundreds on eBay or be denied these shows? And BTW who are these people who buy up limited edition GD sets and sell them for a profit? no deadhead I know would do that.

This has nothing to do with scalping. I've never sold a single object on ebay or craigslist. It has to do with GDP and Rhino being misleading and deceptive in their practices and their news release. They knew this was going to sell out quickly and stated so in the newsletter. The newsletter went on to say that that FLACs and ALACs would be available in May. Anyone who wanted to listen to all of these shows could have. It is a cash grab and a finger in the face of those who pay attention and knew about this for months. If they had in turn, including this other box set in their announcement via newsletter and other outlets, it would be a completely different story. This isn't about GDP making people happy. It's about making themGDP/Rhino more money. I'm out. I already cancelled my "limited edition" set, as well as my 7" vinyl subscription. I'll get these off the internet for free and get the last laugh. I've given thGPD tens of thousands of dollars over my lifetime, and my line has been drawn. Money grubbing band, not money grubbing collectors, lets get that right.

This was a good decision. The demand for the box was clearly underestimated. I am glad I got through and got mine ordered on day 1 (after 7.5 hours. But since they missed the mark on demand a lot, putting this out, minus the book, for the same price, was a really good thing to do. I am glad for everyone who wasn't able to get it right away, but now will get what matters - the music.

Please cancel your orders and allow a worthy Deadhead to claim your box. So sorry your "limited collectible" (i.e. eBay sale) isn't so exclusive anymore. Allowing as many people as possible to have these CDs is only a good thing, and is so much more important than your little tantrums.

Glad everyone is going to get a chance to get this. People have been waiting for these shows for a long time. I got mine on the first day, but I can understand the frustration of people who got shut out. I understand everyone's anger at the web fiasco and hope this gets fixed and doesn't happen again. I sat there and tried to order for 8 hours before I finally got through. As for the price.....150 bucks barely gets you dinner in New York. I'm glad to get these shows and have no problem with TPTB getting their cut so that they can continue to release shows! We are all pretty spoiled by the wealth of material released. We should be thankful and smile smile smile.

I really don't have a problem with a music only edition that lacks a number, in fact I welcome it. I've bought every archival release the GD has put out and I have never thought about it as an investment.Glad everyone is going to have a shot at this run of shows in the format they prefer. It's about the music. I happened to get my order in through Rhino after a few struggles that many of us experienced on Thursday. Yes, the box I got will have a number but that is not what it is about imho. I couldn't tell you the numbers of any of the box sets I have, nor do I stare at them as I jam the tunes. Glad they are opening this up so a ton of people can enjoy the music unlike the coveted Fillmore 69 box. The reality is they announced this box set going into a holiday weekend and they are making sure that people aren't going to miss out on this set. We should be enjoying the triumphant return of these Betty Boards to the vault!

I was able to order the box during the first night of sale, but it took three hours of frustration.I was able to order the FW69 box back when that came out. And I was able to order Complete E72 when that came out. I check Dead.net too many times each day to be considered mentally healthy, but I don't want to miss anything. I understand that some people are not here so often and can miss major events like these release announcements. Part of me thinks they should "Work harder" at keeping up, but ultimately I can sympathize with them. I am very happy that you went with an All Music Edition plan on this new release. I am glad you did that with CE72 also. I wish you would on FW69 too. These are CORNERSTONE collections of Deadmusic. This music has a legacy of being widely shared. The size of the Deadhead community reflects this history. Sharing the music is the good vibe. Hiding the music is BS. (I do enjoy most 70s Dead more than most 80s Dead, but I want ALL of it SHARED!) This business model of limited editions has made commercially viable the releasing of a vast amount of music. I thank you for that. But, it has also attracted and cultivated a "collector" community in our midst. I wish TPTB could settle on a new business model that isn't so inviting to selfish "collectors". If they (Rhino/GD) can make an "All Music Edition" of this to help "make sure that everyone who wants the remastered audio from these shows on CD is able to get it." Then Rhino/GD can make "All Music Editions" of the 30 Trips and May '77 boxes too! I want the music that was released on those boxes but was not able to procure the boxes at the time of release. Stop with the BS and if Rhino/GD TRULY means that they want everyone to hear the music then make "All Music Editions" of ALL the boxes!

It seems as thought none the downloads are available for any of the box sets for some time now. I think they are have trouble with and won't be able to make good on this one being available for digital in may.

But this business model perhaps relies on the secondary market to move the initial product. I'm all for all music for all, But does that mean the "All Music" Editions of FW69 or even Dave's Picks Volumes 1-4 with bonus disc are on the way? If so, my credit card is ready. If not, so be it. I skipped work Thursday to score one of these (when we broke the Internet.). Release all the old stuff Rhino/Warner! The precedent is set! Peace and out! I just want the music anyway!!!!!

Just my take, and this will hopefully not offend anyone. But I purchased the initial box, and couldn't be happier there's an All Music Edition. Honestly I was bummed when it sold out so quick, because this is a Holy Grail type of release. To me, this is like showing up to a sold out concert, then they decide to open up the grandstands and- the more the merrier. I'm the last person who wants anyone to miss out on the music. In a perfect world, limited editions wouldn't even exist- of course, just my opinion.

They take their risks, they live with them. Glad to see that this is being made more widely available. Good for everyone. So getting the booklet is a little bonus for jumping in early, and the price stays the same, so what? This stuff is really well made, takes a lot of effort to make, and should not be compared to a free bootleg or lower quality archive recording because it "used to be free". Even that was a gift from the band to allow it before it was ever a common practice. Without a sustainable model like this, we would never have access to such great quality recordings of these shows. While it's a bit disconcerting to always have to guess whether they will release more beyond the initial limited batches, it's their decision to make. Other than FW 69 complete, which very clearly stated it would not be extended beyond the first batch, I would think they can decide on whatever basis they want to whether to create re-issues. It worked for E72 and Dick's Picks, and I hope they will do more of Dave's Picks and Road Trips too eventually, through Real Gone or whomever, in reasonable quantities that work well for both them and the eager buyers out there.

Making hard-copy cd's available to everyone was the right move. These three nights are on the Mount Rushmore of shows. If there wouldn't be a full fledged revolt, they would probably reissue FW. Thank you. I can't wait to hear what Jeffrey's done with Betty's recordings.

I am ashamed of this petty crap , wah I didn't get one so all that did suck , the dead suck , the vault sucks . and omg there making money. This whiney crap is exactly what is wrong with this country . I want it so I have a right to it . No you don't ! This is a business 1st and foremost , there job is to make money . Thinking they did . There will be a download just get that . Be glad this music is even available . I know dozens of you will blast me , don't care . Yes I got one , matter of fact I got 2 , one to play, one for when that one wears out someday . I have worn out many a record and cd , so I cover the bases . Just quit crying its annoying , if I hadn't gotten a copy I would of been oh well better luck next time . Been listening to this band since 71 . still don't have a right to anything.

I am confused as to how having an All Music Edition somehow diminishes the Limited Edition box set. It is still limited and collectible in its own right for those that like to collect things. I think the All Music Edition makes it accessible to people who really wanted physical media of all 4 shows of this release, but were not fortunate enough to get through, to get it without having to pay an extra premium.

A first world problem, this. Which goes without saying, but I typed it anyway. "All Music Edition should be cheaper" No, it shouldn't. Those that scrambled to order before it sold out ~ an urgency created by the "limited edition" format ~ should not be penalized by paying more than they needed to, as they might've been quite content to opt for the cheaper edition had it been offered from the get-go. "the only people who should have a problem with this are scalpers" First, I don't have a problem with it and I ordered the Full Monty in time. But I don't quite agree ~ a measure of frustration should not be limited to "investors." Consider: * TPTB should really not be blindsided by overwhelming demand for this box, with its modest size vs. musically Herculean stature. The Europe '72 steamer (7200 units, six times as many discs) sold out in a weekend. Could anyone have reasonably assumed 15,000 would cut it for this release? Summer '78 is one thing, but the Cornell '77 run? * The limited quantity created a lot of stress for those trying to order it before it sold out. I had zero problems placing my order, but the issue was real enough for dead.net to issue an apology. * Then, there's just the false advertising factor -- the bad taste of a marketing ploy, whether it truly was or wasn't. Again, you just think the powers should know better by now. Last point said, this isn't nearly as lame-feeling as the Europe '72 announcement of individual show availability was for me. A lot more money was involved for that box, and I indeed felt hoodwinked. Because I would not have sprung for the whole tour had I known in advance. (Am I glad I did? You betcha ~ steamer trunk still might be my favorite box ever.) So I honor the right of the frustrated to feel so. That said, I'm honestly glad they made more in this case. I think it's the better thing to do than not, weighed against the degrees of impact to those offended. p.s. 5/8/77 overrated? Sure, ice cream and The Beatles are overrated, too....

I don't get it - people b!tch when it sells out and b!tch when they add a way to get the music. As someone pointed out, 15,000 is 2.1 million in revenue. So if for instance the July 78 box set sells only 7,500, they have 1 million dollars of unsold inventory on the books. It is a risk to release this, as it (cornell) has been widely commercially available for years as a bootleg of varying quality, but from the same source. Being a limited release is a marketing ploy, but certainly a reasonable one. Once it's sold out they no longer have to stock it, inventory it, let it get shop worn etc. With the number of releases possible from the betty boards coming in the next many years (5 a year is still 20 years) it is reasonable to limit how long each release is available. If you want just cornell, there was no limit. If you wanted the ancillary shows, they set a limit. Once they found demand exceeded the supply, they have a stripped down set to satisfy those people for whom a digital download was somehow unacceptable Is having a number on the box and a copy of the $15 book enough to drive you mad when you don't get it ? I have to admit I like the idea of a special box, but if it was between nothing and all music version, I'd complain a bit about the price being the same, but still buy it. Does it diminish the "value" of the numbered ones ? A bit yes, as the demand is being satisfied by making the unnumbered ones available. Is that a big issue - no - unless you were planning on cashing it in as an investment like beanie babies or a Franklin Mint limited edition plate "Cheeses of Nazareth" Is the investment value the primary interest in all this ? If so, you may wish to look on eBay for the princess Di beanie to put your 401k funds in, as dead cds seem to unreliable vehicles.
