I got together upon John's recommendation with Fent and Voigt and, with the help of Owsley, we learned 50 or so songs in one day and went out that night and got our choice of about three gigs in Hollywood. We played at the Sea Witch on Sunset Blvd. as the Crossing Guards. We were a power trio, and then John and Barbara joined back up with us and we changed our name to the PBC. ....to be able to listen to each show on their 40th anniversary date would definitely be preferable. DaP 20 and July '78 both arrived on the exact date. DaP 21 (swoon) arrived two days early. Neither was ordered expedited shipping, so I have hope. With the fiasco last Thursday, I would think dead.net/Rhino/Warner music would sheepishly admit a screw up occurred and would push these to the post office a few days early. If nothing else but to ease the stress. And yes, I was stressing out for six hours on the 16th....and if not, I'm sure Jim's mower can go back two days with only a mild salsa in the tank....fact. The population of my zip code is approx 35k. To think that they only made 15k of this box for the entire WORLD boggles my mind. If my zip code was the only group marketed to, only half of the households within a three mile radius of me would have one.....half.

That is one of the best Dark Stars I've ever heard! Short, and an unknown cut, but fantastic Who-like jamming and the Feelin Groovy feel as well. Into a nice short rocking Other One> St Stephen, wow! Their use of dynamics is really underappreciated.

If ever there were a dead.net thingie to fix, this would be it. I suspect it was the links from the nefarious spammers that did them in.. Someone complained about damage done to their machine(s) from links clicked from this site.
In truth, they seem to have no control over the links that get posted here. Most are just youtube links of music and culture (99% come from me), etc, but who knows whats included in the spammer links (of which there are many that I ).

I don't use Internet Explorer, I'm using Chrome v.49 and FireFox v.51 on an outdated Win-Vista (for home) and I have no problems, yet. I fired up the IE (v.9) and tried to access dead.net and the unsafe website warning came up.Overdue to get new desktop or laptop. The heck with a smartphone or a tablet.

Again, found this gem during my deep dive into 1970 over the past weekend. It's only the second Dark Star of 1970, and it had been a few weeks since they played it last (the magnificent 1/2). It rolls along very nicely after hitting The Outer Limits following the first verse. Phil kinda of teases a Feeling Grooving in there, but it never fully develops. Then off into a solid and raunchy St. Stephen> Eleven> Lovelight...which is cut, unfortunately.

The rest feels like not the best Spring 77. I am thinking there were better shows than this for a national / widely distributed release. Am I missing something? Doesn't have an Estimated / Eyes, Help / Slip / Franklin, or Scarlet / Fire, or Music Never Stopped, or Mississippi Half-Step. What am I missing in this release?
Afternoon Briefing
Sorry this took so long but last night was pretty hectic in the situation room. We kept getting reports that Anna Chapman (the hot Russian spy) was driving a John Deere down the D.C. Beltway. We thought that these were prank calls but then saw Jim's post that his Deere had been stolen. We dispatched a team to the Beltway but only found a trail of drops of a reddish-brown liquid that appears to be a mixture of lawn mower engine oil and Sriracha. We've sent samples to the lab and are awaiting the results.Another interesting thing was that there was a copy of a Charlie Miller 5-8-77 on the side of the road....

KF, admittedly i had the exact same reaction when this first came out. And, because of that, I had skipped it. Subsequently, either out of guilt or love I picked it up to get closer to complete; but I too, was still left with your same kind of feelings and thoughts.
An odd choice for the exact reasons you've stated.

*according to the shopping cart test, they have 2.130 copies of this left in stock. It was released on 09 under Rhino's tenure. I wonder how many they printed. I bet it wasnt much more that 15,000 copies.

As to the reasoning for the release, I have no clue. I do enjoy it, but don't often listen to it. I think the Sugaree is epic, and possibly the GOAT, the closing Playing sequence is quite good, though I'm not sure it compares to the similar jam sequence that ends 5/17/77 from the first May 77 box. I looked this release up and checked the amazon result, and it had a blurb that said this was released because The Dead tour Spring 09 was hitting Hartford as well. My question to that would be, why not put out a small set of 3/31-4/1/91 Greensboro for the opening night of that same tour?
A good release, historical in that it's the last of the fabled month of May, but for 20 bucks, it's a great deal.
Dark Star of the Day Deja Vu
I went back and listened to the whole Pirate's World tape at work today, and while not giving it my complete and undivided attention (as I need to ensure I am able to keep money in my account weekly so my box doesn't get canceled), I enjoyed it again, and the rest of the show was a firecracker, then the end of the show, it sounds like they're setting off firecrackers very close to the stage. A really good show. I followed that with 2/24/71 at the Capitol Theatre. I really hope they do a Capitol box with those reels back home. With no Dark Star or Other One, this was a very good show with less jamming, though Truckin gets an early workout, and Bird Song was sweet. Lovelight was down and dirty, and not too long.
Riding Mower
The riding mower is back. I found fragments of a napkin from someplace called Mandalay B (its torn from there), a parking ticket from the DC Metro, an old coin.. possibly a ruble and a severed pinky toe with metallic green nail polish.
Oh, in the drink holder I found the small end of a ticket stub, looks like it was from 03/24/1970 and a small roach. I decided to smoke the roach, in case the cops read these threads.. I don't want any evidence hanging around that could jeopardize my eminent run for Senate.

....decided to visit Trappist-1. Had to borrow the "mower" Jimbo. Sorry. At least I didn't get any parking tickets. While I was there, I officially named the seven planets. In order from innermost to outermost, they are now officially Mickey, Billy, TC, Jerry, Phil, Bobby and Pigpen. The most impressive factor of this system, is that for 80 minutes of the "day", no matter what planet you decide to set foot on, you can see the other six in the sky at the same time. 80 minutes....hmmm. That's the length of a compact disc. Coincidence?.....and, of course, they all orbit a dwarf, somewhat, dark star....

I forgot to mention it was returned with a full tank and a half-smoked joint. Its all good.

I listened again to the Rolling Stones UK Between The Buttons album after reading a 1967 Jerry Garcia interview in which he praised the album. So, this is the last of several of 1970's Dark Stars that I unearthed last weekend. It's an audience recording, as I understand no SBD exists due to Bear being in the clink. Even so, this is a very good capture of the sound in that hall. Furthermore, one must actually SEE this sequence to understand what will be found when listening:

And that's just one sequence (and this link is just for the late set - the entire show can be found via other links, inclusive of the New Riders set). The Not Fade Away is raunchy and energetic and melds like buttah beautifully right into an even raunchier Easy Wind. And who doesn't like a raucous Easy Wind??? Another notable mention is the Sugar Magnolia that appears in the middle of the sequence above; this is a super-proto version and you can tell. it's quite brief and I actually had to go back and listen to it again just to understand what was going on. It's a fun moment amidst a mind-blower

I visited this a couple weeks ago...
...but the Dark Star from 2/24/74 is a treat.. and its 43 years old today.
..and boblopes, enjoy your time basking in the sun. I drifted away from most pro sports when the owners starting taking cities and municipalities hostage to pay for their stadiums.. but I passively notice what's going on. What I noticed this year is that the Patriots have garnered a disproportionate amount of bad will when you venture outside New England. Anyway.. it does feel good when the home team wins, no harm in enjoying it. My dad used to take us to Baltimore Colts games when I was a kid.. The Steelers were it back then much like New England is today. ah..the 70's. :D

CD Player/ Onkyo
Looking to get a new CD player and from what I have seen and read for my price range, around 150ish, Onkyo provides good quality product. I have also seen that name pop up frequently on these boards. The thing is whenever I look into reviews I see everything from 5 star, wow love it, to 1 star, broke within a month. Was wondering if anyone could share opinions on these products, specifically the Onkyo DXC390 6 Disc CD Changer and the Onkyo C-7030 Compact Disc Player. While I would obviously prefer a 6 CD player to a 1 CD player, it is also cheaper. The 1 CD player was ranked a little higher. Any insight or opinions would be very helpful. Thank you.

In my experience, single disc players have been better than changers, simply due to mechanics and the cheap plastic parts used in low end players. Both will likely sound the same but the single disc unit may likely be more reliable in the long run.
To Terrapin & Prohibition
To Terrapin pleases me more than I expect it to just about every time I play it.
As far as the WH comments re: recreational weed,I am curious how that will turn out. The medical mj industry in MT was effectively dismantled by the fed's during Obama's term, after the Ogden memo, but we are a low population state. I don't think that the fed's really have the resources to maintain prohibition without the states doing most of the enforcement at the state level based on state prohibition laws. Check out the book "Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition" by Daniel Okrent which provides a great description of how this played out at the end of alcohol prohibition.

I bought an Onkyo 6-disc changer in '97, played the crap out of it and it still works today. It's currently in my office, and I have a newer model in my living room that works great too.
There's something to be said about loading all the discs of a show, hitting play, and kicking back while the whole show plays.

Spun it last night.It's a good recording of a well played show.
It may not blow your socks off, but after a whole month of smoking shows, you got to figure that the band may have been a little worn out.
I have no complaints that it was released unlimited, it's a great show for the casual fan who probably would not buy all the limited box sets.

Thanks for the insight, I like the idea of being able to play a full show without having to run to the player every 40-70 minutes. Also the fact that you have a newer model that works well is great, I know some companies have a history of great products and out of nowhere they succumb to lowering their own standards.
Onkyo
Mine has a minor quirk that sometimes when I press the open drawer/carousel button the drawer opens but then closes immediately. Sometimes when it is open and I press the close button it won't close (this can be resolved by gently tapping the open drawer and then it will close because it has a safety feature to automatically close if bumped).Don't know if I'm accidentally hitting the button twice or if the player is just quirky. Anyway, it plays CDs great.
I recently got an Onkyo Bluray player and it was amazing how much better the audio on the FTW blurays sounded compared to the junky Samsung Bluray player I had.
You get what you pay for.

I went against the good doctors orders today... I know totally wrong. But I skipped the Darkstar on DiP 22 and went straight for The Eleven. I know, "consult a physician." Anyhow, this Eleven, outside of the Other One, was totally what the doctor ordered. Jerry teases some awesome Jimi at the end. Is it just me? Check it out.

In my early years.. I often skipped the Dark Stars. Its not that I didn't like them, it was more a function of casual listening vs. deep, dark matter.
Now, sometimes I rewind or start over if I get distracted...
The Eleven
I absolutely love The Eleven. Its probably the song that made me a Phil believer.
To this day, if its general admission.. you will find me Phil side, even if Phil isn't playing. Its a habit.
Speaking of Spicy Sauce.. the 1973 Jerry Garcia Band Betty Boards were rescued using one of our exiled North Korean operatives. Apparently he was compromised.. and it looks like he got a dose of tainted Kung Pao. A weird, wild story that will likely have repercussions in the geopolitical heat wave that is about to ensue.
The Eleven.. its hard to pick a favorite.. it all just flows. Right now I am really like the one on Two From the Vault. Classic.
Jam of the Week alert
Apologies if this is old news - j of the week is from 5-14-70 Merramec College, Kirkwood, MO. Next night, very next night, was Fillmore E (R Trips 3.3). This slice of 5/14 is straight up 70 craziness. Amazing and excellent!! Do not miss it!!
Right On Blue
Part of that 5/14 show appears on the Bonus Disc for Road Trips 3.3.
By the time the Road Trip series honed in on the honey pot material.. the series was already doomed. But 3.3 is a gem beyond belief.. a truly great release and is the first show where I realized the brilliance of Jeffrey Norman.
Edit: I wonder.. knowing what we know now.. if Road Trips was a vailed attempt to make the vault last and spread out the goodies that were in the vault over the years. Thank goodness for Zuck and his band of reel returning misfits..
Looks like David and I crossed paths at about the same time. When 1970 cooked.. its hard to find any better GD.
