I had E72 but I think I only gave a damn about Cumberland Blues. but push forward to 2002 summer I had it in my car and noticed brown eyed women and jack straw and realized I was a fan. that and hearing Sugaree and that slide guitar part on Weather Report Suite. as far weir saying late 80s was a peak I thought what an ODD choice. but then I remembered oh yeah I do like fall '89. some just hated the MIDI era I liked it. not sure if I would've wanted it throughout the rest of the bands career. and DRUMS seemed to have started at its peak then as well. used to hate DRUMS id be like oh god I'm skipping this shit 19 minute fucking drum shit gimme a break lol

What you say reminds me of what I read in the Rolling Stone Collectors Special Edition on The Dead this morning. In the introduction, Bob Weir writes "For me, the shows we did in the late 80s were our peak, our best era." Quite surprising-but I like the idea that we all perceive things differently, depending on who we are. How we receive the music depends on what we ourselves bring to it-and it must have been a very different experience producing the music to listening to it. Similarly, I think the way we enjoy the music changes depending on the medium in which we here it-either live in the flesh, on tapes, vinyl, on cds or downloads.

Nice Avatar, Rich. ok.. got a bike upgrade 2.0 last night. I am going to put on some incredible 1974 GD and peddle away the dew. Got a nice composite cross bike three years ago.. still really digging, like its brand new and it and it gets me in the higher country away from it all. Mentally and musically very refreshing. I'm reaching for the WOS Road Trips.

I have like new versions of the originals. I would still be interested from a collector's standpoint, if the Bonus Discs were included. I don't know who negotiated for Real Gone, but they should be fired. Most of the Road Trips are just plain incomplete without them. The media is a problem. They have spoonfed a politicized version of events to all of us. It's propaganda folks. Propaganda, not news, from both sides, but more so the left, as they come up with these bizarre talking points, (Anderson Cooper said Trump was depressed, putting on weight, uncomfortable etc, after his overseas trip. I was a democrat, and I can see through the Media manipulation. They're using all of their power to destroy a President, not simply hunt down the truth. This didn't happen to Obama from the right wing media. I'm neutral, and I'm here to warn you all that it's time to stop getting emotionally involved in the psychological war games the media is playing on us. They've twisted facts and turned them into these scare clips, which most lefties buy. And the right wing media would have us believe there's nothing out of place in this whole Russia thing. It's a propaganda machine on the left that I don't believe we've seen the likes of since Germany under Goebbels. Obviously it hasn't reached such severe proportions, but the CNNs and MSNBCs are more dangerous now than ever in our history. The media has an unprecedented amount of power that is propagandizing, not journalizing, and they're protected by the constitution. To an extent. Handing candidates debate question - ugh, it's sickening. THAT'S got more of an impact on the election than anything anyone has dug up on Russia. Defending the awful policies of a failed 8 year presidency. I watch all news stations to get the full story, but there's an awful lot of spin to sift through. And they don't deny it. They were caught off air but on camera, admiting they were doing all they could to help Clinton. And Fox is no better - they pretend there's nothing to be concerned about in Trump. And they have us all bickering with one another, down to the last Dead Head. Free speech good. Mass psychological manipulation bad. Stop taking sides good people, and start taking score. Watch it all, go to the Internet, read Ann Coulter, read Bernie Sanders. What I like about Trump, which we did not get from Obama or Clinton or Bush, is his honesty. He speaks what's on his mind, unfiltered, and while his enemies like to mince his words for their gain and bounce it around the echo chamber, he's a source of a lot of truth in DC that we've never received before. They all lie -Bush Obama, Clinton, Trump. I'll spare the details, but they're well documented. But this guy gets a lot of truths out there, where the others did not. Stop taking sides and try to be the objective jury. It's sad though, because I don't think most Democrats care about the means of getting there, they just want the power. And it's not like they know what they're doing - 8 years of proof and 1 election proved that. Come on, Trump won, doesn't that tell you how badly people object to the shit we've been fed for 8 years. They have a good plan on paper (except for the health care mandate - what a tramping of civil rights that we HAVE to buy something very expensive from the government). But they failed to execute, so hopefully it all goes bye bye. The dems can complain all they want about who won't have health care without Obamacare, but that law never should have been passed. Middle class - buy one for yourself, and your neighbor. Maybe when you start accounting for the people abusing the system, taking handouts and buying drugs, not looking for job (not all of them of course, but a significant number). CNN would take that statement and declare I have no sympathy for the impoverished, and label me an out of touch elitist. That's what they do - they take half statements, apply their own context, and character assassinate. Wake up.

Amidst all of this rukus and unfortunate slinging here and there, one poster has caught my eye - thank you kyleharmon for your honest, righteous, appreciative recounting of your initial encounters with The GD as well as informative followups. The wide-eyed innocence of your retelling, coupled with your tangible love for learning all you can and taking it all-in, reminds me thoroughly of myself and my journey. While I'm not among the truly aging hippie crowd (yet), I, too, am younger (was just 18 when I saw my first show in '90) - but the way you have described your initial encounter and evolving ear toward All That is Holy touched my past in a meaningful way. It's the fact that a true admiration and appreciation for the music can shine through in your words and can get into the hearts and minds of others - that is what matters.
