    Grateful Dead Hour no. 1013

    Week of February 18, 2008

    Requested by Wally Scott.

This program features some fresh music from a Lesh-Weir-Hart (and friends) reunion in support of Barack Obama's candidacy for president, plus some great unreleased music from the fall of 1972 (of which you will hear more in next week's post).

The 2/4/08 lineup was Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart, plus drummer John Molo, Jackie Greene on guitar and keyboards, and Steve Molitz on keyboards. Barry Sless (of the David Nelson Band and Moonalice) sat in on pedal steel for "The Wheel," and Mark Karan (Ratdog, Jemimah Puddleduck) was also there for much of the show. I was there, and as you'll hear me say during the program, this was the best Grateful Dead music I had heard in years - since before the end of the GD. I remember being really impressed by the interplay between Mark and Jackie in "The Other One."

And of course, you can hardly go wrong with a recording of the 1972 Grateful Dead!

By the way, Jackie Greene has just released a three-song Grateful EP of "New Speedway Boogie," "Brokedown Palace," and "Sugaree." It's a free download from his web site.

    Enjoy!

Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart & Friends 2/4/08 Warfield Theater, San Francisco ("Deadheads for Obama")

the new boss is not the same as the old boss, thank God, but he's disappointingly subject to cooptation by the usual suspects.
