New Philly '89 DVD/CD Set Coming Soon!

Here’s a cool way to kick off the new year and decade: Coming soon is a fantastic new release called Crimson White and Indigo, a DVD/3-CD set that captures every second of the Grateful Dead’s superb July 7, 1989 concert at Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium. If you loved the popular 2005 DVD/CD release Truckin’ Up to Buffalo, from July 4, 1989, well, this is the very next show: why, it’s practically like being on tour without having to pitch in gas money, eat bad road food, swelter in the heat or score a miracle ticket. Nope, all the work has been done for you—from the crisp multiple-camera shoot (with no video effects, you’ll be happy to hear) to the crystal clear and powerful audio, mixed from the original 24-track analog tapes in both Dolby Digital stereo and 5.1 surround (for the DVD), and mastered in HDCD (for the CD). But the proof is (always!) in the playing, and this show from the sizzling summer of ’89 tour is sure to please both hard core and casual fans with its energy, diverse song list and passionate playing.

Two years removed from the craziness that surrounded the “comeback” tour of 1987 and the Dead’s unprecedented flirtation with mainstream success—thanks to “Touch of Grey” and the In the Dark album—the group was still riding the crest of that wave and attracting thousands of new fans with each passing tour. The summer of ’89 began in style for the Dead on the solstice itself with a nationally televised/broadcast concert from Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif. A week and a half later, the GD circus hit the road for seven East Coast stadium shows, followed by a handful in Midwest amphitheaters. The group was in excellent form throughout, offering a great selection of old and recent favorites, and polishing some of the new songs which would make up their album-in-progress at the time, Built to Last. Visually, the Dead’s stage set that summer was perhaps the most spectacular they ever mounted—designed by noted Czech artist Jan Sawka, it consisted of dozens of enormous painted canvas panels covered with various patterns, colors and shapes—some abstract, some concrete; quite an amazing sight in an enormous stadium.

In what would turn out to be the final rock concert in Philly’s JFK Stadium (the first was The Beatles in August 1966; the aging stadium itself dated back to 1926), the Grateful Dead come out on a brutally hot afternoon (after a fine opening set by Bruce Hornsby & the Range) with rock ’n’ roll on their minds. “Hell in a Bucket” is an appropriate opening choice for a day that is nearly hot as Hades, and then Jerry takes the party to the next level with a truly inspired “Iko Iko.” He’s all smiles, and that’s always a good sign! From there, the first set dips into some blues (“Little Red Rooster”), Hunter-Garcia classics like “Ramble on Rose” and “Loser,” a potent version of Dylan’s “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again,” a wonderfully exploratory version of “Let It Grow,” and finally, Brent Mydland’s still-newish anthem “Blow Away,” which is one of his finest performances of that rockin’ tune.

You gotta love a second set that opens with a warm and inviting “Box of Rain”—peppy and nicely sung—and then right on its heels a “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain” that is as “up” and celebratory as you could hope for: The “Scarlet” breezes along with joyous purpose, and the “Fire” hits all sorts of mighty peaks; at nearly 25 minutes, it’s a spectacular pairing. “Estimated Prophet” is marked by a smoldering intensity and then the jam that follows settles into the majestic Hunter-Garcia ballad “Standing on the Moon,” surely one of their greatest late-era compositions, and played only seven times before this standout version. The DVD depiction of the “Rhythm Devils” percussion duel gives us a fascinating glimpse of the tools and techniques Mickey and Bill used to create their magical alchemy, and then, following “Space,” the band launches into a hair-raising, careening “Other One” (dig how the camera shows us Phil’s rumbling bass intro up close!), Jerry takes us down to the docks of the city for an emotional “Wharf Rat,” and Bob gets back into party-mode for the concluding “Lovelight.” The encore of Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” offers a beautiful grace note for a show that has taken us through so many different spaces and moods.

The beautifully designed package for Crimson, White and Indigo (the name comes from a line in “Standing on the Moon,” of course) includes loads of great photos by Bob Minkin and an essay from veteran Grateful Dead observer Steve Silberman. All in all it’s a wonderful show from a great year!

samadams757 ask the most important question
Will this be a commercial release? This would be important to know before risking giving out your CC number (see all the posts about having your number stolen or double charged and India not knowing how to resolve any of this). It looks as if RainDead has found out it is on Amazon for pre-order. If so, I will order it there. I have had nothing but positive results with Amazon.

    Road Trips
Hey Now! Does anyone know if there will be another installment in the Road Trips series to accompany this release? If I remember correctly, when the Egypt CD/DVD was released, we got a new Road Trips to go with it. Any Bonus discs involved? And for those interested, Amazon and Barnes and Noble already have this set available for pre-order with free shipping. The band still gets their cut, so I am OK with it :)

I was thinking the exact same thing . Seriousley folks do some investigating here before you lay down that credit card . I am going to wait for this release to hit Virgin records.com or even my local Best buy store . I don`t like to gamble .

Thanks for this, guys and gals! Will definitely be placing my order! Would also love to know if anyone has any information on all the pre-80's videos on the Dead that are out there. The Boys are sorely under-represented in the video catalogue here. Duke University '78, Capital Theatre, NJ all shows from '77 and '78. Copenhagen '72, etc. So many amazing shows out there on video. Many of them in their entirety. Are we ever gonna see official releases of these shows from the Dead's peak years? Don't get me wrong, I love ALL the releases and this isn't a complaint. But this stuff is gathering dust somewhere and there are hordes of us out here who would consider it a wide slice of heaven to have vid of these shows with re-mastered sound and the best possible available image as only an official release can offer. Let's show some of those younger DeadHeads what the boys could do when they were a bit younger. There are some top-notch shows out there itching for a release. Truly magical nights. Vintage and soaring with beauty and energy. Please give them the attention and home they deserve. Thanks again!

First of all, I'm very encouraged to read that the DVD won't include any trippy "video effects". Most of the audience is capable of achieving those effects on their own if they so choose but more importantly the fact that the DVD doesn't include those cheesy effects seems to be a sign that "the powers that be" are starting to listen to us. '89 was a really solid year, this should be a very good release and thankfully we get another complete show!

Of how terrible the dead.net store is from the last few releases - are you really going to jump on this one too? Then will we have to hear you complain for the next 3 months when the customer service effs it up? Just an observation. I personally have never had a problem with the store but from the other (hundreds of) bashing posts I have read - why would you even risk it?? Seems like self-torture or at best like rolling dice to me. "Here's my half a dollar if you dare .. double twist when you hit the air. Look at Julie down below .. the levee doing the dopaso"

I just wanna know how all these other web sites scooped this website? How could the marketing team at rhino let this happen? Once again, they have dropped the ball. Might as well order from some one else other than here, that way, we can bypass India and get free shipping. On a positive note, this is a truly wonderful show, that deserves the mastering guru's dedicated wizardry. Dare I say, best blow away? Check it out at bt.org.

I was at this wonderful show. Although the day was hot, the band was hotter and spanned a wide range of emotion through the music. What an excellent choice for the next "View From the Vault" series. I can't wait to relive the day. Shine On

I love this product concept and will be first in line to buy it. Everything looks gorgeous about this; the 24-track source, outstanding performance, great set list, impressive art work, and a DVD! A release like this is why I remain a loyal customer through thick and thin. I will be happy to purchase 'Crimson, White, and Indigo'. Thank you, Grateful Dead team! Ordering through Amazon (my experience with pre-ordering the Doors: Live in New York last year):Ability to order product online with no ordering problems and credit card number secure Free shipping Email confirmation of my order and an estimated shipping date Email telling me the cost has been decreased by $10.00 and I will receive this cost break Email confirming shipment and tracking number – shipped on the released date (not weeks after) Arrived at my house in 2 days (even with free shipping) in perfect shape and no disc problems Nothing special, this is standard fare for most online companies. This is not an advertisement for Amazon, just an example for Dead.net on how to get repeat business. I will wait to see if there are any special offers from Dead.net (Road trips package bundle?) before commiting to Amazon. But it better be a very attractive offer for me to risk my Credit Card information.

I agree with all the comments here. This looks like a fine DVD set-- exactly what I have been seeking. They must have the video feeds from all the late 1980s shows in the vault and many, many Heads would purchase them. Keep rolling them out-- still hoping for an Alpine 89 box set. My dream set, however, is a Pigpen era Dead video showing his rave-ups. To see video of him prowling during Lovelight-- give me some of that please! I understand video from that era is likely scarce, but how about a good Pigpen compilation (not the first time I or others have brought this up). Re: ordering, based upon reviews of dead.net customer service issues, I will likely go amazon.com route for this. Hate to say it because I have had no problems, but the last releases had some serious issues. Furthur coming up in less than 2 weeks in Chicago-- can't wait!

I for one will order this up as soon as it is available. I have not had any big issues with dead.net purchases and our guardian angel Mary E is always there to help if something does go wrong. The thing that really gets me excited is to see that the audio on the DVD is 5.1 surround. Not enough of that around in the CD world (although some industrious deadheads have created nice 5.1 surround CDs from audience & sbd sources). Its a decent enough set list and Oh yeah... a complete show! Would like to see more of these... By the way I have absolutely no idea why rhino can't pump out a whole bunch of digital downloads... are we all going to die before that happens??? boggles the mind. See you at Radio City next tuesday if you are going!

come on you guys You use this site to get all the free music you do through the vines and then you discourage people to order through here. Neither one of you said that you ever had a problem ordering here. You say there are 500 posts about it, without having a true figure. Yet you don't mention or do we know how many orders went through without a problem. I am no Pollyanna, I have read there are problems, I am sure there are as in every business but I haven't had any myself and neither have any of my friends that have ordered from here. Jackstraw - you even say you have never had a problem yourself. Why would you emphasize others problems over yours of not having a problem? I can't believe that you wouldn't want to support the good work of marye, Blair, David Gans, David L. etc. that is here. Simple economics. Feed the hand that feeds you. . I will order from here and will post if it is bad. But what other type of business even shares their customers bad experience with other customers? I am pretty confident that things will work out in my order. As the history here has proved itself for me. I guess I would just like people to look at the positives too. I enjoy vining and getting to know the two of you but I just had to say my piece here too. I am sure there will be further discussion on all of this. And as I write this part of me can’t believe that I am even asking people to take a balanced view of the big Silent Corporate Rhino machine and its' products. But I am. Critical mind does not have to mean a negative review. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

I said I`m not a gambler. I don`t want to take the chance of getting somthing that won`t play then having to wait months for shipping or take the chance of getting totally ripped off by the big rihno . Yes Marye does a fine job around here . but if there is a safer secure place to make my purchase then that is where I`m going . HaHa Like Buddy Plant say`s Bring on the Drama !!! I'm sorry but I will never order from this site again. The last two orders I have placed have been an absolute nightmare. I have been ordering merch here since the mid 90's but I'm done now. Simple orders like a cd set and several stickers went undelivered for 6 weeks. Only response to multiple voice mails and emails came weeks later. Claimed my entire order had not been sent because the stickers were out of stock. I have no reason to believe they would have even notified me if I had not made so many inquiries. Cancelled the order. This is mail order from the 1970's, certainly not this century. I'll buy in-store only from now on. Can't wait for this release though.

As I have several times in the past. I only commented because I think its funny. Its always the same thing lately - a new release comes out, everyone posts how excited they are then all of a sudden the posts turn into bashing the store and I was predicting that's what would happen again with the newest release. Even though I have not had a problem I will admit the negative comments have made me think twice!! I am on the same page as Buddy Plant's comment I was just being more of a smart ass. Wow I am sorry you took it the wrong way and that you would think that I would not support and be grateful for the people you mention, this site, the vines, and everything else. well first and foremost thanks for the new release. Its just so good to get some more video. But if we buy from another source I don't think it is being disloyal or biting the hand that feeds us Hal.: ..no one has proposed illegally downloading the releases. Rhino still get their profit and band still get their royalties whoever we buy from. As far as I can see the only people who are losing out are the so called 'fulfillment' company, who deserve to take the hit, because they are the worst online store I have used. And yes I have had problems.. with about one in 3 orders. If there is a deadnet only bonus goodie involved I will reluctantly buy through the store here, but if not I will use Amazon or similar. Whatever the case I am looking forward to my front row seat at the show.:-) l

July 7 1989 should be great, that Blow Away is great and fitting companion for the one on Dozin' at the Knick. Always look forward to a new Vault release.Seems unlikely that a road trips will be released even though the first Road Trips was from Fall '89 and there is still a lot of great material out there but they have been staggering the releases so more people can afford to buy them. It's been a few months since the last offering (Furthur began touring and sellling shows) so . . . Now about Customer Service at dead.net and rhino I have had many problems with orders from dead.net and rhino Mostly damaged (unplayable) discs these have always been replaced promptly from dead.net My third cd of the Chicago IV box was defective. I had to bother the rhino customer service office (one person with a voice mail box) who took about 7 weeks to replace my cd. The Dead have had lots of problems with new releases ever since they returned to the labels for pressing discs. When I purchased "In The Dark" in 1987, I returned the first 2 albums I took home. After returning the second album to the store I MADE the clerk open the next album and place it on the store's turntable to check for warps, it was so we opened the fourth, fifth, sixth and finally the seventh disc was flat. Once dead.net sent me a replacement disc (Shakedown Street expanded from Beyond Description) before I received my order of the box set. Worst thing was the Mail Order for the NYE 2009 Furthur show The mail in date was 10/22 and I did not receive the tickets until 12/20, they were nice, but not like 1988 or 89 or 90 and GDTS changed their phone number to a FAX machine and it took me 20 minutes surfin' to find the old number on the web. Outstanding choice, this has been a longtime favorite of mine and have been very much grooving on it a lot the past year or so. David L. hinted at this in a Taper's Section last year, probably in July, when he posted something to the effect of "we hope to hear more from this show later this year." That signalled to me that it was a likely RT candidate since there'd be no reason to revisit it with so many fall and earlyw inter shows to use for Tapers Section. The video is even better. If there is an accompanying RT that is not from the same tour but trying to hit the same time frame in general, I'd love to see the October Philly shows used. They get overlooked frequently in lieu of Hampton and the Byrne run. As for 7-7, the Loser>Let It>Blow Away that closes set one is white hot and even if you aren't a fan of Brent's raps on Blow Away, Jerry's "under the surface" playing while Brent carries on is fantastic. The Scarlet>Fire is spectacular, just incredible and the post space is a fitting end to an overall blistering night. I'll take the unpopular position of saying I've only had one issue ordering direct from this site and it was rectified promptly and satrisfactorily with little to no hassle. Along with one of the RTs I ordered the Pure Jerry Merriweather CD and only received the RT selection. Within about 7-10 days (max) of submitting my claim I had the MErriweather CD. Sorry to hear that other folks have had such unpleasant experiences, it shouldn't have to be that way.

That at some point pre-order announcements would spark pre-complaints. So far the Rhino fulfillment/quality woes haven't hit my door, though I've begun to get the feeling that I'm playing order roulette as every new release seems to spawn new horror stories. But, I'll hang in around here for ordering until I get burned. Probably...if it's cheaper on Amazon and there are no other dead.net purchase incentives, I could change my mind. Regardless, looking very much forward to a new DVD!!!, and, thankfully, no bizarre video effects!

Shutter Island. I saw a preview last night. CREEPY. Just don't ingest any imagination-enhancing liquid or paper products beforehand.

Hey - no easter egg tease for this release - loved them to build excitement and guessing on what the new release was going to be. Please bring them back (could never solve the last one - puzzle). Can't wait to order - haven't been burnt yet by the Rhino store =)

I see some people here saying they did not have problems, don't think that translates into praise. And I just said take a balanced view. Can I collect a check from Rhino for saying that? If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

Insanity - Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. So dear friends we plunge headlong into the breech again willing to place our well earned cash and sanity (what's left of either) into the hands of Grateful Dead Merchandising, aka Rhino Records Mega Maladjusted Customer Service Comedy Show, aka Punjab Call Center and Curry Emporium. Could it possibly be that the brass at Rhino paid attention to all the problems and have placed solutions into the ordering process? Or are they counting on those "burned out old hippie freaks forgeting about what happened the last time and just ordering like a bunch of deep fried zombies?" Stay tuned for the next episode of the newest reality show, "Help Me!! I'm a Dead.Net Customer, and I just want to place an order." On the BUS since 12-29-1968, and I'm never getting off. "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."
